Good stories need structure. How many times has someone tried to tell you a story, and they just go on and on about the most pointless things, and by the time they get to the juicy bits you’ve already checked out? How often has a movie done that? I talk a lot about writing on this channel, with rewrites and story pitches, but rarely do I ever go into what makes a story work. I’ve always been fascinated with story structure, and I think breaking down a film or piece of media is super important, both for writers to practice their craft but also as an audience to better understand why something works. So today I wanted to break down one of my favorite movies of all time, *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*, to ask one question: How do you tell a story?

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is definitely one of my favorite Spider-Man stories ever written. Not only the animation, soundtrack, voice acting were all great but the story itself was really good. It’s so uplifting, inspiring and powerfull. I’m super excited for the sequels. I hope they’re as good or even better than the first.

I would love for you to break down the structure of the 2nd movie in a trilogy and how to do an "Empire Strikes Back Ending" e.g: The Dark Knight
I think for sequels the big difference is that the "normalcy" is still relatively spectacular since it's part of that "new normal" from movie one, and the ending battle or during the resolution there should be some kind of major failure of the characters, turning the "new normal" of movie 2 into something bad that we want to escape from, where movie 3 brings us back into the "good normal" at the end.

The only reason why I want Sony to keep Spider-Man is because THIS MOVIE! THIS MOVIE! THEY ALLOWED THIS MOVIE! THIS FRIGGIN SPIDER-MAN MOVIE!!! TO HAPPEN! Disney would never (also Venom, Venommmmm). I can't wait for bara Oscar Isaac Miguel O'Hara Spider-Man 2099 to make out with 1967 Spider-Man in the next movie.
This is my favorite film of all time. It does so much with little time while still keeping the themes and characters focused and concise. it's a balancing act that was able to reach the end of the line without slipping up once. It's the definition of perfection.

Troy, this is officially one of your best videos. As an upcoming writer, I've been researching and studying the anatomy of stories and characters and this video broke down a fantastic film and made it easily digestible. You should make more videos such as this one.
*With the MCU movies* I was never getting that reminder of why I loved Spider-Man when I was younger.. but I genuinely loved this movie.

@@firstlast9846 really fair, i left with very mixed feelings. i didn’t dislike it but tbh beyond the nostalgia (well-written but nostalgia nonetheless) it just felt like a weaker version of ITSV that left me wanting to see more beyond that ending and feeling weird about the journey leading up to it trilogy-wise for a lot of reasons.

I saw this in theaters in December of 2018. I was a recent marvel fan, I’d seen infinity war and most of the movies before. When I came out of that movie I became a SPIDER-MAN FANATIC. I think it’s the movie that really made me appreciate the spider-people/verse and all that came with it. I’m beyond excited for across the spiderverse
Honestly, this movie has a soft spot in my heart. It's so greatly written it ensures that the story they're telling feels inspiring and not only that, the animation and soundtrack make it enjoyable. Especially the acting, I remember watching this movie during opening night and I was blown away by it.

This movie is what made me realize that I truly loved spider-man. The same way spectacular was that for you, this made me realize it’s not just nostalgia or because he’s popular. Spider-man is just a character I love and relate to and this is the real true meaning to spider-man to me. Anyone can wear the mask and be as good and as flawed as Peter is. We’ve seen it time and time again and into the spider-verse just hit it right on the mark

Into the Spider-Verse is deconstruction done right. It really changes up the typical Spider Man formula, while keeping the most important elements that make Spider Man so special.

I really appreciate you saying it's alright to stray away from the specific beats of the Hero's Journey if it serves the story. Nearly every discussion of the monomyth makes it sound like it's the be all end all so it's refreshing to have the opposite put into words
Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse is my favourite Spider-Man story and movie. Miles is so relatable to me. It is perfect for entertainment and also teaching you how to write stories.
This made me realize that the play I was writing was missing a lot of motivation being explained to the audience. I was trying to avoid exposition dumps and it ended up making it hard to tell why the chaotic neutral antagonist was fighting so hard to clear the name of a man he just met
You did an incredible job analyzing story structure and one of my fav movies of all time too, but I wanna say your EDITING is AWESOME. It's improved so much over the years and it gives your videos this fun and energetic feel to them, and makes me love watching them. Really can't compliment you enough in it, favourite part of your stuff other than your writing skills

I can appreciate everything about this film that makes it popular and earns the praise it gets as an incredibly well structured and put together piece of art, which you highlighted extremely well, I just wish I liked it more.
I don't hate it, I don't even dislike it, and I've adored Spider-Man my whole life, but for whatever reason this film just didn't wow me, and upon multiple viewings I didn't feel any different, in fact I was left feeling pretty indifferent. As I said I do not think it is a bad film by any means, it just didn't click with me, heck it wouldn't crack my top 3 Spider-Man films.
Okay, Kingpin is definitely something that I just wasn't a fan of. Sure he had a clear motive but a clear motive doesn't always make for an engaging or entertaining character, and to me he wasn't particularly engaging or entertaining, but that's about it for things I can say I honestly dislike.
Maybe it was because it was animated. I've got nothing against animation, heck the DCAU is my bread and butter when it comes to DC adaptations, but I think with Spider-Man there's something about the wackiness of the character designs that makes them more of a spectacle to me in live-action, pretty much any character design you can pull off in animation.
As you said, it's all subjective.

Personally, I was never the biggest fan of this story. It had all the elements necessary for a story but the presentation of the beats got a little messy for me. Still definitely an amazing movie for every other reason but I just found the story to be a lesser aspect for such a solid piece

Do the first Scream film on the idea of how the villain is introduced and how the first opening sets up said villain's psychology and motivation. I also would like to see it contrast to Marvel films whose opening scenes starts with villains and ponder if it's effective or not and ponder if that initial opening informs their characterization throughout the rest of the films.

I recently bought Into the Spiderverse and No way home dvd and while I liked No way home and being able to see Andrew and Tobey again and see Tom's Peter finally grow up the movie had terrible pacing and it felt rushed. I have seen Into the Spiderverse six times over the years after it released and everytime I watched it felt brand new and just as good as the first time it is one of the best Spiderman movies I have ever watched and I hope in the future to see the three live action Spidey in the movie

I don’t care what anyone says, so I’m just going to say it: Into the Spider-Verse is my favorite Spider-Man movie. Yes, that includes Spider-Man 2. Spider-Verse is a love letter to the meaning behind the Spider-Man mantle and Miles is an amazing character. Everything in the film helps back up these two great factors. The voice acting is great, the characters are spectacular, the story is emotional, the action is visceral, and the visuals are unlike anything ever attempted in an animated movie. Can’t wait for Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse; I simply haven’t gotten enough of this series and it’s only one movie in so far.
