So "Thor: Love and Thunder" just came out, and it’s… not great. It’s not the worst thing in the entire world, but I was pretty disappointed. As a big fan of Gorr the God Butcher from his appearance in Jason Aaron's comic run on "Thor: God of Thunder," I feel like they didn’t do that character much justice, and there are some decisions towards the end that I really don’t care for. The reason I didn’t do like a regular review for this movie was because after watching it, my biggest takeaway had less to do with the movie itself, and moreso a bigger issue with a lot of current Marvel products, something I’ve wanted to talk about for a while.

The day CGI artists are unionized is the day Marvel suddenly stops making twenty movies a year and starts to either focus on tv or two big projects
And the moviegoing experience will be better for it. I'm perfectly fine with one Marvel film a year or even every 2 years so long as they're treating their workers fairly and genuinely put artistic integrity/vision and the rights of their employees before making a profit and churning out more unfinished and rushed films.
@@ryanhalawani2637 After all, if I'm watching these movies in IMAX, then the CGI must be immaculate. One of my regrets is not seeing the first Pacific Rim in theaters cause that movies just looks amazing.
I think it’s just cus they skipped out on 2020 so they have a lot of content to release before phase 5. But man it’s getting tedious to watch
I'll be so glad if that ever happen. I love unions and those artists shouldn't be doing crunch time either.
Or do both, but just have less projects, 2-3 films and 2-3 shows a year is perfect imo, Also, I could be in the minority here, but if they really wanna push more films, then let another department take care of the shows, like letting marvel TV be under itself instead of marvel studios, if this is the type of VFX and content we are getting
The problem is also that Marvel products nowadays are about 70-80% CGI, which means they're pretty much 70% animated movies while having a live action's deadlines. Animation studios are, surprise surprise, given deadlines befitting that of what is needed for animation. I don't like Lightyear, but that movie looks damn good and tons of love and time was obviously put into the visuals.
I am not sure why MCU movies are still treated as live action films in terms of schedule. A bunch of their films use more special effects than Roger Rabbits and Spaceballs combined, and those films are considered hybrids
Very true. Vfx takes a lot of iterations to get correct (especially the animation part)
and vfx artists can only work so many hours per day before the Supreme Court gets involved for slavery

@@Dave102693 to be fair, Roger Rabbit got the excuse of animation that is deliberately cartoonish vs Marvel's animation that tries to look more realistic. It's not really a fair comparing the 2 films since it's more of a apple vs orange comparison. A more appropriate one would be Life of Pi or Dune 2021. Those films have insanely beautiful and organic looking 3D "realistic" animation while costing much less than 200 million to produce, compared to most Phase 4 films on average cost more than that yet looking much worse

@@RedYoshi-ct1wx COVID did screw up the order of the original Phase 4 line-up, i.e. Multiverse of Madness was supposed to directly come after WandaVision; but it was clear that after 2020, if you search the original line-up they were going to bring much more MCU content anyway, with 4 films and 4 shows within the original plan for 2021.
What we actually got on 2021 was still 4 shows and 4 films -- the difference being that Black Widow, TFATWS and The Eternals were supposed to release earlier in 2020 while the rest of the stuff we have had so far barring Moon Knight would have been on 2021.
I am exhausted with the MCU now I can’t see everything anymore.

At times I wasn’t sure if it was green screen or shot on location or not in some shots. Then there’s MoM and Thor. It was PAINFULLY obvious that almost every scene was in front of a greenscreen. It takes you out of the movie if you actually pay attention to it.
There’s no excuse. I’d rather Marvel put out less content that was of great quality vs whatever they’ve been doing for the past few years.

2:22 So, I actually saw the Green Goblin mask last year at the Museum of Science in Industry in Chicago. There is a Marvel traveling exhibition that is going around with a variety of items from Marvel history, including everything from original pieces of comic art to movie props. Sure, it wasn't used in NWH but the mask itself is indeed safe and being conserved in a museum setting.
Do you know if that exhibit is still at the museum? I'd love to check that out!
@@CrossOutBryce I looked up the exhibition, which was under the name, "Marvel: Universe of Superheroes", and it left last October it seems. Since it's a traveling exhibit though, it's probably still making its way around the US, so you might still have a chance to check it out.

I did see a Twitter post where a VFX worker claimed that Marvel doesn't accept pre-vis shots unless they're 90% what they would look like in the movie, (e.g. the CGI equivalent of a storyboard) and that artists have to create an almost finished scene just to show to producers at Marvel who can then tell them to start from scratch. Most other companies requested VFX are fine with a pre-vis just being grey models as to not overwork VFX artists.
with so much previs you would think Marvel would do its due diligence and make sure things were actually PLANNED OUT IN PRE PRODUCTION
I don't know why Marvel is so inflexible like that. They basically have a bottomless project and tonnes of source materials, surely they can deviate a bit from the original vision
It always sucks when you make a critique about marvel and their vfx and someone has to tell you that you shouldn’t complain or something. These movies have way too big of a budget to look the way they do sometimes

Workers deserve better. I would not mind having to wait more for movies, videogames or any kind of entertainment if that means that I would get a product with great quality made by people that were never exploited in any form.
I would prefer to have two movies and 1 TV show a year rather than 4 movies and 5 TV shows a year. But whatever Disney is greedy af and they need to promote Disney+.

Brilliant video, hit the nail on the head, The use of the volume can be great but when used like it was in Thor it looks like an SnL sketch, even the way dialogue scenes are shot, there’s more craft in Thor 2 honestly, sets, dynamic lighting n all that.

Honestly my biggest problems with Marvel it’s their way to try to drop as many projects as possible that basically just makes them super rushed , not only that but they feel the need to add jokes about campy stuff every time which is pretty kinda insulting to the original media .

MCU is the Colourpop cosmetics of the movie industry. it's amazing how two completely different industries have the exact business model. they're literally the respective versions of each other: frequent overproduction of barely passable products, flooding the market with marketing hooks, while offering very little quality.

@@Dave102693 worse. you can't find a Colourpop review vid from 2020-2021 that doesn't mention the sheer number of mediocre releases. I think they did something like 12 thematic releases from different movies and the pop culture zeitgeist; including the Child Yoda lil dude (I don't watch SW).

James Gunn's marvel movies are an exception to this issue because of his meticulous planning. He finalizes the script, character designs, storyboards, sets way ahead of time. So the VFX artists have plenty of time to work on a big CGI enviorment because Gunn finalized the design very early on.
That's not entirely accurate, Gunn would have limited control about how much time he has. And they even had a vfx artist react where they straight up said they just kind of designed ego however they wanted after filming
Oh yeah, no matter how much you plan it, the VFX artists will still be working on it until the last minute. I guess what I meant was his planning prevents the VFX artists from having to do stupid shit like change a characters costume, or change the way their powers look or suddenly have to animate stuff for a brand new scene the filmmaker decided to add last minute. Gunn also shoots as much practically as he can. The prison set in the first movie is still one of the biggest sets made for a MCU film.
Marvel continuously pumping out a dozen or so projects a year now isn't doing their VFX department any favors since they're being stretched so thin.

Haven't actually watched the video yet but VFX artists unionizing would be amazing for the industry, and would lead to better visuals and working conditions for the people doing some of the heavy lifting for the movies we get
Edit: yeah that basically sums it up, if you or anyone you know work in VFX I understand that pushing for a union can be extremely scary but the benefits far outweigh the cons and there are more of you than there are of them.
Then they'd just hire the youtube artists looking for work and it'd look even worse lol

The studio who invented VFX did a horrible job on Thor, that tells literally everything about Marvel that it's not the artists who are responsible for this abomination.

Even Browntable has already discussed this and the more people see those issue, the more I see it too. Too bad, Marvel won't probably hear us about this problem, even though it can help their films.

Why would they spend more money when they can spend less and make more? To make it better just cus? Please they want as much money as possible while spending the least amount possible.
As long as people continue to pay to see each and every one of these things, there’s no incentive to make good films

There is also an editing issue. With the new 2 hour mandate clearly placed on MoM and LaT, the scripts miss crucial story beats and the films feel very thin with half baked themes and story arcs

This is definitely a problem. In both MoM and Thor 4 the ending feels rushed, and since final battles are always at the end, it means that those battles don't feel as impactful or interesting as they could be.

I think Everything Everywhere All At Once was a great example of how to balance CGI and practical effects. They obviously had a decent amount of CGI throughout the movie as it is a big multiverse action movie, but they also relied on practical effects for everything that they could. You don't need to CGI things you can do with practical effects so they didn't. It made it feel real while still keeping the fantasy.

CGI problem has been happening fo long time, you'd think Disney would've held back CGI given how expensive it be must.
While more expensive in many aspects, it is in many scenarios way quicker. Why get a professional to hand create many helmet props for Thor and Jane, when you can get one artist to create both and a editor or whatever to put it over them. No risk of them breaking. I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that Marvel uses CG for EVERYTHING. They should build more practical sets and use more practical effects so that the CG can be reserved for more larger things that *actually require* CG, which would probably give the artists more time to focus on the little things that matter. Not, for example, wasting that time digitally recreating a suit over a suit that’s already practical -.-
Also; practical just looks more pleasing to the eyes.

I can honestly say that it was the first time, at least for me, that Gotham felt like a real place. Like, a genuine city that I full believed exists somewhere on the East coast of the US. Maybe I'm biased because a lot of it was filmed here in Liverpool and I could recognise the landmarks, but still the cinematography was absolutely top tier. It was such a revelation that a big blockbuster film could still have fantastic visuals and colour palette and not just dull grey-scaled backgrounds like in nearly every MCU property.

Hearing they only had 6 months for black panther made so much sense but was also so frustrating.
This reminds me of the comparison between Rogue One and the Kenobi tv show, with the scenes of Vader's castle. Where in Rogue One the lighting came from outside the castle as if the light came from the windows, while in Kenobi the lighting was seen from the inside, as if there were lamps (which is not supposed to be)

It’s upsetting that visually Kenobi didn’t look too great. Especially since it was such an anticipated series. Some of the directing and cinematography choices were bad. Which surprised me because The Mandalorian looks good. Also the most recent Disney plus shows like Moon Knight & Ms. Marvel managed to have some nice looking visuals.

They had to rotoscope his body because the upper body of the practical suit (like in Iron Man 1) got too heavy for RDJ to carry for long hours

One element I recently noticed comparing Spider-Man movies is that The Amazing Spider-Man films and even Rami’s Spider-Man 3 have both had bigger budgets compared to the MCUs Spider-Man.
I think it boils down to Disney/ Marvel making to many projects that all have a subpar budget.
I really don’t care about how a movie looks if the story is good, but it is a problem that should be mentioned.

I absolutely dislike the excessive use of CGI in Marvel movies. They can't even shoot a backyard scene in a backyard. I absolutely cringed when I found out that Thor's swords in the Hulk fight scene on Sakaar were CGI. But, for all the hate I have for Marvel's over dependence on CGI in phase 4, I absolutely loved what they did with Black Bolt's suit because of scheduling conflicts. You'd never know it was CGI'd on him.
Andor's gonna be interesting. I heard that most of the filming was on location and they refrained from using the volume as much as possible.

CGI? Nah, it has WRITING problem.
I just watched Thor love and thunder, I hear everything you said. The cgi in this movie, was not amazing, but as phase 4 movies go, it is the best. There were shots like with the masks (where Jane was going over her catchphrases), that it looked bad and could’ve switched to a practical piece. But the overall movie looked way more balanced and lifelike compared to No Way home, and sadly even like what happened with doctor strange. This movie felt more visceral, tangible and overall had scale. Something that these recent movies, which had promised scale, but find themselves becoming very small. Now I do wish the company fixes itself, but as the slander of Thor 4 goes, it’s not amazing but it is great as phase 4 goes.

I wish corporations would learn that we don't need 5-6+ projects a year to be entertained and for them to make money. But two reasons for it are, of course, capitalism, but also because a lot of people today get bored of something really quick. So it's easy for executives to think they if more and new content isn't put out, they'll lose our interest. But if we can go a full year without stuff from Marvel, we can wait an indefinite amount of time for our next Marvel film or show.

The civil war CGI for Spider-Man was mid to me the CGI for Black panther and the Black panther movie was mid to me actually all at CGi
And the CGI for iron Man's suits and infinity war and in game was terrible compared to the very first iron Man movie when you saw him use the Mark III suit in the Middle East

For all of Thor whenever there was a close up scene of Hemsworth I couldn’t stop staring at his arm, the same when you could very clearly see where they cut and pasted Downey’s head onto the Ironman suit, you could see where they threw Hemsworth’s arm onto the suit

The first movie Where I noticed bad CGI, was in GotG Vol. 2. There was only a few bad shots but it didn’t ruin the movie.

Fantastic video. Very concise and to the point. I love Marvel and the MCU and have watched all of their films but, there's no denying there seems to be a steady decline in their visuals and also in how they manage their resources. It is absurd that Thor had a helmet in the first film yet for some bizarre reason they insisted on using cgi helmets in the film. It speaks to how the capitalist mentality of profit at all costs and the obsession with churning out as much media as possible has really damaged the quality of their films and worse still is exploiting hard working VFX artists who don't have the protection of a union. It honestly really sucks and lends a whole lot of credence to the criticism that the MCU is essentially the fast food chain of cinema churning out a lot of content really quickly but at the expense of both the product's quality and the treatment of their workers. Honestly, the quality of the MCU isn't what's the really important issue here. The treatment of non-unionised VFX artists is disgraceful and speaks to the awful and exploitative system corporations use to weasel out of treating workers fairly. I honestly think VFX artists should go on mass strike similar to the numerous writers strikes that halted Hollywood.

Exactly what I've been thinking all this time, ever since that god awful ps2 looking fight between Black panther and Killmonger. Marvel's cgi is a ghost of its former self. Tony suiting up for the first time still looks badass 14 years later, but looks so bland in Infinity war.

Completely agree that with directors and DP who know their craft, are passionate about it, and want to do as much as possible in-camera, you can get insane results ! The Batman, Top Gun Maverick, and Everything Everywhere All At Once are indeed the 3 most formidable and unforgetting examples of that (and they all came out this year !), and it did take a big dump on my pleasure watching Thor Love and Thunder. Not that the movie is bad itself, it's just that in the emotional and visual department, we've seen movies that were so much stronger than that, made for half, if not a fraction of its budget.
Wouldn't it be lovely if the MCU hired these directors who know where to put VFX or not in, and get a much more streamlined pipeline, helping the struggling VFX studios in the process ?

Thank you for saying what i've been feeling about thor love and thunder ever since the trailer dropped. I was so confused when people kept saying this is the best looking marvel movie. Like no, i didn't even know they used the volume bcoz it just looked like poorly done green screen. The lighting on the actors were so bad and highlights your point of the fix it in post mentality.

The volume is excellent... when used properly. In The Batman or The Mandalorian, it works excellently. The problem comes when they are so committed to using the volume that the quality of the product is obviously worse, with the main example being the Book of Boba Fett. Marvel really needs to boss up and start taking more time, but I doubt they will.

Disney... slow down with the MCU, just chill. My god, it's like they're in hyper mode, all coked-up and minutes away from having a massive heart attack. Slow down, chill and focus.
I also like to believe lack of good reference (and also not using them when present) is also a contributing factors to vfx looking subpar.
Filming entirely in a green screen stage and having to figure things out in post would make any artist bash their head against the wall.
Even you said, filming in stagecraft doesn't solve all of the issues present in production, but it certainly helps when you have good reference for, say lighting on surfaces if you need to fix it in post.

A couple things:
Unionizing can provide better pay, but work hours are still long in the industry. The most recent IATSE conversation, from when I was more clued in on them, was about shorter hours as 16-18 hour shifts were happening with the production I was on thankfully stopping around 13. As well as allowing for proper lunch breaks as those would sometimes happen during shooting.
Second, the LEDs are supper cool, but also unreliable as they currently stand. As with all technology there are a few bugs that can hit production hard. This is outside if the skills needed to make it look right.
I'm at the part of, I'll occasionally see something VFX related that annoys me but I agree that since the MCU is the biggest franchise on the world, we definitely deserve more, hopefully the volume gets better uses and a union is made

Really seems like CGI looked alot better around 2007 to 2010, it looks so bad now & obvious. Maybe crunch? Lack of talent? Lack of care? Idk but Transformers 1 is photo real cg 98% of the movie
