Their musicality is often lost to many, they just hear chaos or noise. But, there is so much beauty in all those layers.

Great song, amazing band! They have a really diverse discography, personally I like everything they did from the first noise-rock albums to the last, more pop/rock albums. They have great "hit" songs on every album. I can't select a single best song from them, but "The Diamond Sea", "NYC Ghosts & Flowers", "Drunken Butterfly", "Candle", "Catholic Block", "Shaking Hell", "Disconnection Notice" and "I Love You Golden Blue" are among my favourites. And this one as well. Thanks for reacting to this, not too many people know Sonic Youth these days.

love all ur picks... i wish the diamond sea had at least another bit of beauty at the end of the distortion though, as it is it's kinda annoying to show to people who aren't used to the sound :P "this is one of their most beautiful and poetic tracks... try to ignore the 10 minutes of screech'y texture at the end" oi vey

I don't why I enjoy so much seeing people discovering music, or "getting it" instantly. I guess it's like re-listening to it for the first time.
Also, I totally get to nostalgic vibe from this song. It hit me the same way.

i live far away from my fiancee, we used to live in a mountain city in Japan called Tajimi... it got hot, humid, fuggy nights... one time or other we got into a fitness drive and decided to go jogging every night... i started it up, made a playlist of songs i loved, lots of hype, I had teenaged riot about 10 minutes in.. I think the opening track was White Light/White Heat by the Velvets, then something ridiculously hype'y like Facet Squared by Fugazi or somesuch, anyway... Our jogging route first went through backstreets and alleyways of a half-abandoned old part of the city, then we would emerge and run along a river path, a footpath at the riverside base of the dykes that protected the town from the river - sometimes the river was near flooding and that part of the run would be super atmospheric... anyway after running along that river we would turn and run up a kind of tributary, past the shrine where i proposed to her, and along a long pedestrian footpath, maybe 3km straight through some more populous suburbs, but it was usually late at night so we were alone... teenage riot kicked in around the end of the river run and took us through to the end of our jog... the frenetic rhythm would dictate our footfalls and by some happy coincidence our running speed (credit to my fiancee, she kept up fine despite being 20cm shorter than me) and the length of the song meant that it would carry us right, neatly, to our finish line... almost to the exact footfall.
Now that i'm away from her, for a year or so, I listen to this song every morning on my way to work to remind of what i'm doing, who i'm doing it for, who i am, and what we're about. love this song.
appreciated your listen, now going to listen to your chatter.

Daydream Nation changed my life. I was a 15/16 old kid.... everything was different after that.

Bravo, boys. A pivotal song in alt rock 🤘

When a band can pull off an intro like this, it makes the energy feel like Megadeth in comparison!

Daydream Nation is a pretty great album across the board, but I'll go with Hey, Joni for my favorite. EVOL is probably my next favorite album from them. I love Shadow of a Doubt and Green Light. Sister is a bit more spotty for me, but Stereo Sanctity and Schizophrenia (which you've listened to of course) are probably my top songs from that one.

Btw, this song is supposedly about Jay Mascis.

He did live with Kim and Thurston as a teen. I heard the guitar riff in this song was taken and expanded from the opening riff/chords of Freak Scene by Dinosaur Jr. I dont know the accuracy of this as both albums came out in '88.

I'd like to thank Neil Young for getting Sonic Youth to open for him in 1991.
Sorry the crowd booed them offstage. Mostly sorry for the crowd.
