    Sonic Youth was a terrific band, kind of a precursor to the Pixies and Nirvana. If you want more I would recommend either Diamond Sea, Bull in the Heather, or Little Trouble Girl

    "Teenage Riot" is one of the most legendary alternative songs of the 80s: if you were there then, and you listened to alternative/college rock, you know this song well. Sonic Youth and Husker Du basically laid the foundation for the grunge era; most of the well-known figures of grunge were big Sonic Youth fans. I'd also consider the best elements of shoegaze, like (of course) My Bloody Valentine's _Loveless_ , to be a meshing of the noise of Sonic Youth with the dreaminess of Cocteau Twins.
    Another noisy song from the same time you might like: "Freak Scene" by Dinosaur Jr.

    Sonic Youth had a long, great recording history, and if you dive deeper into their catalog than this one fantastic song, you will have many, many classics to hear! :-) They were one of the great '80s/'90s/early-to-mid 2000s American "alternative rock" bands, and they were, and are, *hugely influential* in alternative rock circles, but to me, SY is just a great American rock band, period. Great albums for thirty years!

      More No Wave than Punk! 'Daydream Nation' is a double album that rarely touches on anything you would call Punk!

  • @Katehowe3010
    @Katehowe3010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Sonic Youth were a seriously influential band from NY who fitted more into the No Wave movement than any obvious Punk trappings! They had a unique habit of downtuning their guitars which later had an effect on certain Grunge bands like Mudhoney and Soundgarden! Plenty of fuzz and wah wah, backed by a Jazz inclined drummer made for one holy noise fest, although they weren't always blowing your ears out! This track is one of their more 'commercial' offerings, although still played in the aforementioned downtuning style, and taken from the album that broke them, and remains their greatest piece of work! At the moment Daniel, i must say that you are on one hell of a hot streak.

    I had a girlfriend in 90/91 who was a mad advocate for this album, amongst other underground bands. She was pilloried for being willfully obtuse, but she was clearly correct. Sonic youth, this Goo and others being evidence, are freakin awesome.

    I'm not going to #SmashLike ... but, only because no one should ever knowingly be the 70th like.
    That said, I like this.
    I had the pleasure of seeing a free daylight (!) Sonic Youth/Sun Ra co-headliner in Central Park on July 4th, 1992 (I'm old, right?). IIRC, Thurston Moore (guitar/vocals) prefaced this song with a tongue-in-cheek dedication to "the Central Park hardcore scene."
    Great show.
    Great song.
    Great reaction.
    Glad you found it and appreciated it.
    BTW, there is a shaky video (audio's not bad, though) of that entire Central Park set on TH-cam. Check it out.

    If you like to read... consider Our Band Could Be your Life by Michael Azerrad. It'll teach you more about what went into a song about J Mascis as president than any TH-cam comment ever could, and it'll let you know how important Sonic Youth is. And how important Dinosaur is. As far as genre... back then it was just punk rock or for the less inclined maybe college rock. In the 90s we might have called it something else. Maybe noise rock, I don't remember.

    Oh wow. You have no idea what minefield you just stepped on to. Sonic Youth are unlike any band that you have ever heard. They created a unique uncompromising daring original sound that created universes and galaxies with their detuned electric beautiful walls of noise and sound. They were from New York's late 70's underground experimental No Wave scene that rewrote the book on how to write a song and threw all the rules out the window. Sonic Youth will open a door to so many incredible things. They are one of a kind... J
