I'v never had any problems with my V-Maxes, and I've on my 5th... Also, check that your fan kicks on when the needle get just over 3/4... The Guage use to have a tinny Dot at that position... CHECK AND MAKE SURE THE FAN IS WORKING...
man u should have been a surgeon, lol,i thought the trany looked complicated, but this looks even more delicate, wish i had your skillsand patients, pactience, lol, thankx for sharing
Overheating due to a fuel problem? First time I've heard that one. Very, Very unlikely, They run hot anyway, like someone else here said, add a switch to manually turn on the fan, problem solved.
20252529 If the fuel/air mixture is *very* lean then the engine will heat up rapidly. Relaxing the fuel screw, and increasing fuel flow will help. But then if jets are clogged, this will have lesser effect. So, carburetor needs cleaned. The person in the video seemed to know what he was doing. He cleaned, checked for other issues that might cause heating and then he is (re)cleaning the Carbs. It would be interesting know if it worked.
Aredde Serkle you guys are both correct, to a degree . But if the bike is running okay, the heat issue won't be related to fuel. For fuel as a cause of an overheated bike requires an absurd lean condition that will accompany bogging and missing etc.
Michael Manning I can tell you right now, fuel isn't causing an overheat condition. Unless the bike is missing terribly (lean) it's not going to influence temps much at all
I'm using fuel injection and on my other one impractical racing carbs ,the efi gets better fuel mileage I'll be honest and if you add nitrous it'll go fast enough to keep it cool.
Well explained nice video. I have the same sorta problem with my 85 V-Max . Runs fine gets Hot and shuts down. Carbs off and cleaned but not completely apart. got some intake boots to replace the old ones that are cracked and very worn out. You r right about the fuel. But i think it is something to do with the elrictrical system. Pressure sensure . starter relay and the pick up coils. four orange wires to the control mod. These carbs are a Pain in the But to take apart and repair I don't care what any one says.Any one I'm here to listen for some help.I will comment on the results on the new intake boots when i install them. I love this Bike. One of a kind!!!! Live to Ride...
I have a 1996 Yamaha VMAX. The two spark plugs on the right are running rich the two spark plugs on the left seem to be normal. What would cause this? It only has 17,000 miles on it. I was told maybe from sitting on the jack stand leading to the left the floats on the right might be bad???
Steven Grace just bought a 1992 22000 miles V boost comes on at 6000 rpm I also have a SASSY V boost eliminater which you can adjust to do Whatever you want. You can adjust the sassy to have the Vboost So it comes on earlier. You get approximately 100 miles to the tank. I absolutely love the bike and previous owners and people who own them now I have not heard any complaints
For what its worth........... have worked on 2 of these bikes that were sitting for several years.........and the biggest problem is always the rust that collects in the bottom of the tank..! ...........Since the Vmax is fed from the bottom.....by a pump.....it always upsets the carb flow and blocks the jets........!.......I didnt see if you cleaned the tank out.(and rust-proofed it.).....But its the FIRST thing I would have done!...(its a pain as you have to take the back wheel off....and a suspension strut!)...........
I've inherited the same problem. Took me a while to figure it out, but with a powerful led torch and low fuel level, I can clearly see the rust in the bottom of the tank. Tank off, carbs off is the only solution to this. Ah well, it's something to do next winter. :)
@@TheMerlin672 Got my tank sitting with 15 ltrs of white vinegar in for a few days waiting for a Petseal kit to arrive. Unbelievable the amount of cr*p coming out. Lesson learned: keep the tank full during the winter layup. Use the bike regularly in summer. They don't like sitting around.
VMAXs always run warm. The stalling out at less than max temp and the flat spot (engine warmed to operating temp) at take off are signs of a bigger prob. They are cold blooded motors and dont troll well when cold. Not the kind of bike you can jump on and ride away.
There was a kid in high school who bought one of those brand-spanking-new. And he actually drove it the first night up to the cruise where everybody cruises up on State Avenue here in Kansas City Kansas. And he ripped it up and watched it and that whole bike jumped up in the air about a foot off the ground and he Full Throttle dit when it did that when it hit the ground it flipped a wheelie and went flying down the parking lot and slammed into a steel pole. It was the most funniest thing I've ever seen in my life..

They all run hot.I have a aftermarket temp switch on mine to turn the fan on early. Works great. Too bad ya tore it down.....
Hey Mustie 1 I also am having similar issues with my 86 vmax. we all would like an update.
man u should have been a surgeon, lol,i thought the trany looked complicated, but this looks even more delicate, wish i had your skillsand patients, pactience, lol, thankx for sharing
This is the first Musti1 video I watched. hard to believe that it's been over 10 years.
What's up Old Guy?
Vmax 4 bank carbs are relatively simple to r/r. The Honda v4 carbs are tougher to get reseated back in place.
Thank you! I have rebuild a number of carbs and the Honda V4's are the toughest to work on!!! The Vmax is actually a pretty good set up.
@@vmx5111 That's right. I can lever the vmax carbs off with a broom handle but my V65 needs a metal pry bar. Very gently!
Overheating due to a fuel problem? First time I've heard that one. Very, Very unlikely, They run hot anyway, like someone else here said, add a switch to manually turn on the fan, problem solved.
20252529 Overheating absolutely can be caused by a very rich mixture.

Rubber plugs in jet block leaking internally cause rich condition same carbs on the venture. High Temp gauge reading is normal on mk1 and vmaxs
how did this repair turn out.I've been searching your clips no luck on finding a follow up
Michael Manning I can tell you right now, fuel isn't causing an overheat condition. Unless the bike is missing terribly (lean) it's not going to influence temps much at all
Change the thermostat housing preassure cap (rad cap), its faulty, not giving correct preassure to flow.
I see someone mention no follow up to this vid., did you get it sorted? Thanks.

spargplug leads
it cerodes at the end that fits to the coil
These bikes run hot.

Thinking about buying a used Vmax, anyone know the best years? or years to avoid? Thanks Mustie, always enjoy these vids..

@Motersickle Bum daaaaamn 650 really is a steal. I got mine for 1300 but tbh mine is running and driving correctly 😂
cracked coils also make the vmax over heat.

lol this is one of mine fave bike, but always been afraid to own one , its like a money sink if the engine gives problem

how many miles on that thing? Thanks for the video.
This bike with these carbs is a pain in the arse. Ive taken my carbs off 5 times rebuilt them and still cant get rid of the flat spots in the throttle
@jamesfreddys its low like 5k
Sounds like a sync problem to me. Mine wouldn't idle worth a crap until I got the carbs close in sync.
rad cap is worn
I owned 3 - 1200cc Yamaha Vmax's that black cylinder with the needle on it is $100.00 bucks a pc.
Not any more. Ebay has 4 sliders with diaphragms for about $25. Just fitted a set to my 85.
The problem is most likely the 37.5 pilot jets in the jetblocks clogged.
looks like a nice bike tho

My VMax only runs warm when it's really hot and I'm in stop and go traffic
Thank god for fast forward.
NIghtmare? Sorry to disagree, but I find 1st gen Vmax carb racks to be among the absolute easiest to remove...
It would be better if it is diesel.
