    Hooking up two 300 watt JL 12s on a 500 watt max amp in series will work great. 8ohms is good because it will not over tax the amp and still have more than enough bass to enjoy music at a resonable level, so I don't go deaf.

    Just remember one thing: never wire speakers that utilize crossover networks in series. There is potential for degraded sound and even electrical damage. Subwoofers that do not have crossovers (some do) are fine, but not 2 way or three way speakers.

    So on the parallel setup. Having 2 4ohm subs, I’ll only need an amp that puts out “1 at 2ohms” correct? Now is it the same with the RMS output? If these 2 4ohm subs are rated for 400 watt rms does my amp need to put out at least 400 watt rms or at least 800 watt rms?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you are using a mono amp with two single 4-ohm voice coil subs wired in parallel to 2-ohms and rated up to 400 watts RMS each, a mono amp rated at 800 watts RMS x 1 at 2-ohms would be an ideal power match to maximize the performance of the subs.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you wire two 4-ohm subs in parallel to a mono amp to present a 2-ohm total load, each sub will receive 300 watts RMS if the amp is rated at 600 watts RMS at 2-ohms.

    So if a amp for example is
    150 x1 4 ohm
    300x1 2 ohm
    If I power two 4 ohm subs rated 300 rms 600 peak parallel then it makes it a two ohm
    Will I be then over powering my amp 600x1 2 ohm? Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Carefully considering your subwoofer impedance and wattage configuration is crucial to selecting the right amp. Connecting two 4-ohm subs capable of handling 300-watts RMS each would show a 2-ohm load to your amp, with a maximum wattage of 600-watts of potential power the subwoofers can handle. With your amp you would be delivering 150-watts per subwoofer and should sound great with most subwoofers without the possibility of overpowering.

    • @crutchfield

      That won't be possible without wiring some of the subwoofers out of phase with the rest. If you can make room for 4 more subwoofers, then you can keep them all in phase and create a 1.5 ohm load for an amp.

    Great video. But you did not explain which wiring would sound better or sound the same. And what happens when we add 2 4ohm speakers to a 4ohm amplifier. I guess speakers would generate 2ohm each but does it going to damage 4ohm amplifier or not.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is no cut-and-dry answer to which wiring method sounds the best. The various methods exist because under the right conditions, they all could sound the best or the worst.
      As for what happens when you add two 4 ohm speakers together, that will vary depending on how they are wired together. The first part of the video dives into the two ways to wire two drivers (speakers) together and what that changes for the impedance presented to the amp. The ohms that an amp is stable at should always be considered and you should never present an ohm to an amp that it cannot support.
      Are you trying to find speakers/subs that can work with a specific amp? Or trying to find an amp to power specific speakers/subs?

      If you have dual JL Audio M3 subwoofers connected to your M600/1 amplifier you cannot add more subwoofers and achieve good wattage to each subwoofer. To add 2 more identical JL audio subwoofers, the best way is to add a second JL amplifier to drive them. The JL Audio XDM600/1 below is the perfect choice!

    I’m new to this, lmao

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The need for an amp on the speakers depends on your goals and partly on the speakers that will be used in the system. There are times when the only external amp installed is one to power subwoofers. In times like this, the radio powers the speakers with its built-in amp.
      But then there are times when external amps are used to power all the speakers.
      We can tell you that installing an external amp to power the speakers should make them play better than using a radio's built-in amp to power them. Just don't exceed the speakers RMS watts with the amp. We wouldn't want to get so much power that the sound is still bad because of it.
      What speakers are you installing?
      What vehicle is this in?
      What speakers are installed now? What changes are you hoping to make to the sound you get with those speakers?

      @crutchfield no I don't want to change anything with my setup, I'm just very curious what would happen if the positives and negatives weren't twisted together (like you did in this video for parallel wiring) before being plugged into the amplifer, and what would happen if the wires at the amplifer side were attached in the same manner that they were attached to the subwoofers - 2 sets of positive to positive and 2 sets of negative to negative for 4 wires total going into the amplifer instead of only two wires

    • @jeffreyharbin5211
      @jeffreyharbin5211 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @crutchfield my exact setup is a BOSS 1800W 4 channel amplifer with 2 12" Kicker Comp CVT 2 ohm subwoofers, they are currently wired according to the amplifer instruction manual
      at the subwoofers, I have two positive wires and two negative wires, that are plugged into the terminals respectively, (so 4 separate wires at the subwoofer the same way you hooked it up for parallel @2:30 in this video)
      at the amplifer, my terminals are marked "channel 1 and 2 bridged connection" and "channels 3 and 4 bridged connection" with 8 total wire connection slots (channel 1 positive and negative, channel 2 positive and negative channel 3 positive and negative and channel 4 positive and negative, for 8 speaker wire channel connections in total)
      for one subwoofer, the positive wire is attached to channel 1 positive terminal and the negative wire is attached to channel 2 negative terminal at the amplifer,
      for the other subwoofer the positive wire is attached to channel 3 positive terminal and the negative wire is attached to channel 4 negative terminal at the amplifier
      this is what I was told to do in the instruction manual and it works,
      so at the woofers I have 4 separate wires, and at the amplifer I also still have 4 separate wires,
      so to me just looking at the wires it doesn't appear to be wired in series or parallel, but rather something else entirely (which I know is not possible so I must be overlooking something, and I think my next statement will cover this)
      since the terminals on the amplifer are "bridged connections" I am thinking that although they have 4 separate wires, they are connected in series at the amplifer (the negative wire for the first subwoofer that is hooked up to channel 2 negative terminal on the amplifer may be internally connected to the channel 3 positive terminal on the amplifier that is attached to the positive wire for the second subwoofer) so to me this essentially seems to be the same as connecting the subwoofers in series (connecting the positive terminal of one
      subwoofer to the negative terminal of the other subwoofer and then being left with two wires to run to the amplifer the same as you did in this video for the series connection but in reverse at the amplifer connections rather than at the subwoofer connections)

    Thank you so much for the video. Using the parallel technic, can I do the same with my wireless subwoofer (from soundbar)? My sub driver that came along with the soundbar( samsung q950a) is only 8 inch 4omhs. The wireless sub has no output and neither samsung sells same model subwoofer. All I wanna do is hook up wire directly from the sub driver using your parallel technics and then sends the audio signal to a small sub amplifier that can handle my new polk subwoofer 12 inch 200 watt. Will this change the overall impedance or impact inadvertently in the process?
    My intended simple steps below:
    1. Hook up wire from wireless subdriver inside the sub cabinet(parallel)
    2. send the audio connection (wire) to a sub amp.
    3. then send the connection to new subwoofer.
    Eternally grateful if you reply.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaker level inputs on devices have such a high ohm rating that they, for all practical purposes, they do not change the ohms that the source amp sees. The process you described can work as long as we know the other gear works. You mentioned the wireless subwoofer does not play. If it was the amp in the wireless subwoofer does not work, then the newly added amp/sub gear to not produce any audio. And that is on top of the fact that once you open that cabinet of a wireless subwoofer, most manufacturer warranties are voided. It is best to use parallel wiring on devices meant to connect gear that could be wired in parallel (i.e. some power amps, etc..).

I ask this because i have a single 12" Competition Kicker sub that can handle 400RMS. My mono block at 4 ohms only outputs 200RMS, but at 2 ohms it delivers between 400RMS to 500RMS depending on the voltage from the battery. I would like to get that 2 ohm power from the amp to my single 12" Kicker as at 4ohms it really isnt outputting much power to keep up with the rest of the system. If you are using 4-ohm subwoofers that can handle 600-watts each, wiring in parallel will give you 2-ohms total impedance and 1200-watts RMS power handling for the pair. If your amplifier delivers 1200-watts into a 2-ohm load, each subwoofer will receive 600-watts RMS. I hope this helps to clarify!

      Wiring two subwoofers in parallel by joining all the negative connections together to the negative on the amp and doing the same for the positive connections will make an amp see a 4 ohm load. As for the watts, they will be split evenly through both subwoofers. However, wiring the subwoofers together at the terminals of one of the subs, that will make this set of terminals get all the watts of the amp. Then half will leave using the wire that runs to the 2nd subwoofer. That's what we were referring to when we mentioned the first subwoofers connections and that it would be safer on them if each subwoofer had wires running from it to the amp.

      Changing the polarity or phase of the speaker connections will result in the speaker moving either into the enclosure or out of the enclosure when the bass hits. One configuration may sound better than the other with your vehicle and setup. With many amplifiers, you can adjust the phase with a switch instead of rewiring your subwoofer connections.

      It is only possible to wire together eight 8 ohm drivers together and get a 1 ohm load. If you tried to wire in the other two, you will end up with something less than 1 ohm but your amp is not rated for anything less than 1 ohm. Another issue you will face is that eight of the subwoofers are not able to handle the power output from the amp. Ideally, you will find an amp that output 6000 watts RMS at 1 ohm when trying to run 8 of the subs on one amp. The other option would be to try to find an amp that is 0.5 ohm stable and outputs around 7500 watts RMS at 0.5 ohms.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because it is not possible to wire two 4 ohm subs (or speakers) together and get a 4 ohm load for an amp. Different subwoofers would be needed so they can be joined together to a 4 ohm load. Two 2 ohm subwoofers can be joined together to create a 4 ohm load using the same method shown when creating 8 ohms from two 4 ohms.

    stupid novice rookie question.. so turning 2 4 ohm subs into a 2-ohm load actually gets the most maximum power from the amplifier? how does that make sense... the lesser the ohms the better?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  ปีที่แล้ว

      Amps typically output more watts when they are presented with lower ohms. Ohms is resistance. With less resistance, more work can be done (think how many more 45# plates a person could lift if gravity was reduced). For amps, their work is creating watts. But one thing to keep in mind is that you do not exceed the lowest ohm that an amp can support.
      We have an article on our web site that is designed more like a walkthrough to help match subs to an amp now that you have seen various ways to wire them together:
      www.crutchfield.com/I-rFBKc227/learn/how-to-match-subwoofers-and-amplifiers.html

    • @RKCorinth
      @RKCorinth ปีที่แล้ว

      Think ohms as resistance.
      Let’s say somebody was playing tug of war, 4 people on each side (4ohms). In this case, there is equal resistance. No one side can pull harder than the other etc. But let’s say two guys are removed from one size, well now there is less resistance for the side with 4 guys, meaning that they can now pull harder and use more power compared to the side that now only has two guys.
      The less guys = less resistance, which means more pulling power.
