    In this video I demonstrate my method of (1) assigning drum kit pieces to beat pads, (2) build custom drum kits with Drum Machine Designer, and (3) customize the step sequencer in Logic Pro. Enjoy!

    This an incredible tutorial, having a dedicated MIDI pad controller to create beats vs. using a keyboard is just exponentially better. I've been using Logic since version 5 and am continually blown away by the amount of knowledge gained from this channel, hands down the best YT channel for digging deep into Logic, thanks so much Josh!

    I used this video as well as the principles in another to create mirror images of the same kit in the bottom 2 quadrants with miscellaneous percussion in the top right. I did this 4 times with the custom slots for an acoustic rock setup, an electronic setup, an orchestral percussion setup and an empty slot I haven’t figured out what to do with yet because of way to many options.
    I love this channel. Thank you for making music fun.

    This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
    Also, I found that in the Novation Components app, there is a "Factory Custom Mode" that you can add which gives you 4 colored quadrants on the Launchpad, which I like for drum pads.
    For me, it was Factory Custom Mode number 3.
    I then mapped everything as you described, but I mapped three of the quadrants just in case I want to use more than 16 pads for some reason.
    So now, I can tap "Custom" on the Launchpad and it goes into that mode, which looks nicer for drumming than the Notes mode.

    What version of Logic Pro x are you using for this tutorial? Mine does not show the Learn note thing on the pad, and I have seen dozens of these videos, however, I still can't find a way to map my Akai Mini controller's pads to Drum Machine Designer. I am 100% frustrated. If you can help I'd appreciate it hugely!

  • @timschannel247

    Hi, thanks for the video. Compliments for speaking with clear pronunciation and showing how. For my taste you focused 10min too long on details how to adjust sound of your samples. I would be more interested in on how you perform with your kit and even use it along with Live Loops to go the step further. So how to record loops by hand? I completely miss this. Suddenly you have your midi pattern there and you did not really show how to create this. So the hole approach creating a midi controller preset and how to integrate into the workflow for creating loops and arrangements is missing. Best regards!

    Hey thanks for the video ! I've got a problem, whenever I'm trying to click on "learn note" my pad doesn't respond to dmd and so it can't control any of the notes and yet my launchpad is well connected to logic because it still controls the live loop mode... Would you have an advice ?

    This was SUPER helpful dude as always. One little thing I missed though is that I just bought the Arturia minilab recently and somehow the velocity of each pads seems to be extremly small so it requires me to SMASH these pads button to get a normal sounding Kick or snare, however when I play the keys on the keyboard the velocity is way stronger somehow, do you have a recommendation for this situation? How to higher the velocity of the pads so that they are as strong and big sounding as the normal piano keys? Cause right now it makes me wanna use the piano keys more than the pads for drummings which feels kind of wrong ;) All the best! /Ed

    hello, I am getting crazy with the following: is it possible to buy a pad and assign the "play botton" (space on the keyboard) of logic? I would like to start project in logic just with one stick shot. One shot play, one shot stop instead of pushing space on my keyboard.. thank you very much for an explanation.. Mattia

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy

      You can’t layer multiple samples on the same pad, but you can make multiple pads be trigger by the same note. Click on the Input menu on a pad and learn it to a note on your midi controller:

    @MusicTechHelpGuy let's say I already have a nice groove in the piano rol, and then I start messing around sorting the pads left, right, up, down. Is it possible to tell DMD to automatically reflect the change in the piano roll as I don't want to go and manually re-edit my groove? That was the feature that made me avoid DMD

    Question on your video productions: how are you recording your live audio (voice, computer, etc.)?
    I’d use Logic for this myself, but… you’re demoing Logic! Do you have another Logic instance on another computer or something?

    Josh, thank you so much for this video. After I have my pads assigned how do i use them to record into the Step Sequencer? I have looked everywhere but cannot figure out how to play in my drum parts. My pad (roli block) is working fine and the sounds are accurate and play when I strike the different parts. Thank you.

So I can assign the drums from logic to the pads please if you can help me with this that would be very helpful. I'm getting my Arturia Keylab 49 MKII Saturday.

    This helps, but can someone please tell me how to map sounds from one of the stock kits so I don’t have to load in every separate sample? I just want to choose one of the kits and map the kick, snare, ride, HH, etc. to each of my drum pads instead of building the whole kit from scratch...

    New subscriber here and loving your videos. I am having issues with downloading the full version of LPX. I have gone to the Sound Library Manager and attempted to download "additional content packages" which shows a total of approx. 60GB. They now all now say "installed". However, when I go to my applications folder it is still showing Logic as a 2.04GB program and my macbook is still showing the pre-download storage amount of 80GB. I have tried digging through forums in regards to this but nothing sheds light on this issue. Any ideas what might be happening? Thanks for a great channel!

  • @JeffyG
    @JeffyG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Josh - just wondering if there’s a quick way to load NI Battery kits and samples into DMD? I can do it by finding each sample in Battery and dragging it into DMD - one at a time - but curious if you had any thoughts on how to load an entire Battery kit. The use case is collaborating with another Logic user who doesn’t have Battery, when we both might be tweaking the drums.

    • @shaneking5610
      @shaneking5610 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The quick way around this is to use AutoSampler to sample the Battery kit and then you both can have this as a Sampler instrument

    • @JeffyG
      @JeffyG ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shaneking5610 interesting idea. That duplicates the sample (existing Battery/Sounds/ folder plus Logic’s sample instrument) but it’s a good way to get the Battery sounds, with FX, and processing into a Logic DMD. I’ll try it.

    • @shaneking5610
      @shaneking5610 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeffyG Yeah, it will duplicate the samples, but drum sample are so small it won’t matter plus it has the bonus of future proofing the kit for when NI drops support for Battery. I’m doing for any of my live projects that currently use Battery.
