So good to have these tutorials back, I can't even watch other ones because they aren't exciting or they don't do anything to set volume levels etc. lol
Apple should've had this forever ago, but i'm glad it's here now. They've taken essential elements for hip hop producers and made it so much easier. I was so tired of painting in midi
Great tutorial! I do think that in the first update to Logic 10.5, Apple should number the steps in the sequencer. I don’t recall seeing an unnumbered sequencer. The functionality of a sequencer necessitates the steps be numbered to enable the user to quickly put in notes on the right places without having to guess if this is the 9th or 10th step for instance. Apple, is if you’re listening, please add numbered steps in o the sequencer. Awesome update though😊.
@C Pryme If you want to avoid headaches and frustration, DO NOT UPDATE unless you've created a backup of your current version of Logic. So if anything goes wrong you can always revert back to your previous working version of Logic.
@C Pryme I personally wouldn't wait that long since the new features are killer. If I were I would just create a backup of your current version of Logic, just Option drag to create a copy of it. Rename the copy "Logic 10.4.8" or whatever version of Logic you currently have. Then update Logic at the App Store. Your old version will remain untouched and you can always revert back to it if you need to. By the way, you can have several different versions of Logic on the same computer, for example, you can have both 10.4.8 and 10.5 on the same computer, they will both work fine.
@C Pryme If you have ongoing projects to finish, definitely make a back up. But otherwise you should be safe. It's really the OS update that kills things. If you're making the jump to Catalina for this, double check that all of your favorite plug-ins still work in Catalina. If you're already on Catalina, you should be fine.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Hey! I've already happily, successfully and safely updated to 10.5 when it was released and was sure to have a backup before doing so. I'm on Mojave still and don't plan on updating to Catalina anytime soon... I've come across way too many horror stories from people about Catalina. Mojave has been rock solid for me for quite some time now, all my plugins and everything is working perfectly and I'd like to keep it that way :)
I use Batch Commander for Logic so I’m looking forward to programming the new shortcuts onto Batch Command buttons. I can already see I’ll be going to a few of them quite often.
Slightly unrelated but at 7:22 you created a monophonic group between two hi-hats so they could cut between each other. Is it possible to do this with two different instruments that aren't using Drum Machine Designer? I'm trying to do this with two different 808s so they won't bleed into one another. All I can think of using is a noise gate and sidechaining one to another but that doesn't seem to give me the results I'm looking for.
Great vid! Thank you for doing these!! I have a question, though. At around the 12:00 mark you say that Splice samples will automatically sync with the project tempo. I can't get that to happen in my Live Loops with Splice samples specifically. Or, sometimes I can, but when I actually record the arrangement to the timeline, the sample goes back to its original tempo, which now doesn't match the tempo of my project. Any chance of a video just about Live Loops and Splice samples? Or any tips? Thank you so much for your time!
Hey brother great as always...Sorry haven't been around for a while going through some personal things ....missed ya...hope all is well...Joe from Staten Island
Hi! Why when i play a sound on the track stack chanel of DMD sounds good and balanced and when I play the same sound in the individual subtrack (to recording for example via a controller...) sounds different and weird? I cant solve this, can you helpme?
thanks!! fyi, in this update you can now assign key commands to create new pattern regions and new midi regions. i assigned mine shift+option+P and shift+option+M, respectively. i noticed in the video that you did not yet have these assigned. =)
I haven't assigned any key commands for new regions and cells yet, but I did assign a key command to open the step sequencer. Shift-Option-Command-S wasn't taken already!
at 13:25 you pull up the patterns tab to access patterns templates etc. my patterns tab is blank with no options. is there something I need to do to enable this? user error?
Hey Josh. Thanks for all your great tutorials and gems of information. Just another aspect that I haven't heard any news on. Has there been any improvement to your mind on flex editing? Would you now consider using Logic's flex tools rather than Melodyne - or aren't we there yet?
Hi, How Should I assign the keys in the Live Loops below C2. I tried reassigning keys below C2. It is not allowing. When I am playing in the keyboard, there are keys assigned below C2 but they are not available in Live Loops. How should we assign them. For Example, if you take Picked Bass from the available logic instruments, it has keys mapped below D#2 but am not able to assign in in the live loop. Please help. I am composing a track for which i need them. Thanks.
I have an older Mac mini and MacBook so I can’t upgrade my operating system to get to logic 10.5. This is a pretty cool feature but as a composer and also a songwriter I don’t really see using it more than maybe for one albums worth of music or a couple songs. It’s more of a special effect. But it is easier than using an external controller like novation.
Yes, Live Loops and the new Sampling workflows are specifically meant for electronic music workflows. For typical composition and arrangement, it's not necessarily that useful. I write a lot of rock stuff, and I never use live loops for this; however, any time I'm working on an electronic track I find myself working with live loops exclusively.
hello! i have been using the step sequencer to easily place my hi hats but when i convert it to midi & try to use the piano rolls automation it won’t let me. do you know work around for this. thanks for your help!
Can you do a DMD video using midi input? Like pads. I can record in a beat but when I break out by notes and try to record directly to the individual track, the sample gets all wonky. Also can’t change velocity just on one track and not all.
Hi just wondering if you know whether it’s possible to play notes in via midi to the step sequencer rather than click them in? Seems I can only do either or not a mixture of playing in and clicking in
@MusicTechHelpGuy I have a question, when working with the Live Loops feature, are you seeing this weird bug where you record a 2 bar loop and set the Cell length to 2 bars and "At Red-End : Play", once the 2 bar loop has been recorded the loop starts to play but the very first note of the loop gets muted? But then it plays normally the second time the loop plays? It's not an issue of notes not getting recorded, all the notes are recorded just fine, it's just that the first time the loop plays after recording it, the first note gets muted for some reason... are you seeing this issue too? I've come across 3 people now that say they have the same problem...
The problem is most likely that the first note is coming ever-so-slightly before downbeat of the loop, and the way MIDI notes work is if the Note-On message is before the beginning of the loop, the note won't play. There's two easy work arounds for this: (1) Quantize the MIDI for your cell you played in. or (2) Turn on your MIDI CHASE for notes. I did a video on CHASE here: th-cam.com/video/9dZKzjoa6hA/w-d-xo.html
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Hmmm I have the MIDI notes quantized on the way in, I've set it to 1/16th notes. Also, I tried turning Notes on for MIDI Chase but the problem persists. The problem isn't that the first note isn't being recorded, it is being recorded and as I'm recording I can actually see the first note recorded onto the cell as I'm recording. The problem is that the first note gets muted on during the initial playback right after the cell gets recorded onto... any other thoughts?
@@drvoodoo3073 I have a similar issue, but the note just straight up isn't getting recorded. I've turned MIDI chase on and tried the quantize settings to make it perfect, but it won't capture that first note if I'm a hair too early.
I love the Drum Machine Designer interface, but I still can't figure out why the global controls seem to have no effect. Volume, Solo, Mute, they seem disabled in the mixer. Seems super inconvenient for mixing if I have to control each sample individually rather than having the track stack controls work. Am I missing something?
MTHG thanks so much for the great videos! I'm wondering if anyone here can help me troubleshoot. When I assign samples to an exclusive group in drum machine designer, triggering a sample in that group does not stop the playback of other samples in that group. Does anybody know why that function is not working for me?
hey man is there a way to re-route the outputs of DMD after it has been created? Essentially change all the outputs to the instruments to a new Bus, can't seem to find where I can adjust the input to match them
I love this workflow; can see all the views at once. Question on that hat choke trick with DMD; is that choke auto-generated when you made the hats a group? Thanks and dig your videos.
The group you assign to is just a MONO group, so it only plays one note at a time. Any voice/pad going to a monophonic group will be part of that. So when you play a note that sustains (like an open hat) followed by ANY other note, it automatically cuts off the sustained note. You can actually do it with any samples, not just hats, but it's most commonly used for hats, to mimic a real hi hat playing style.
Anyone know if there's a way to program in steps without using a mouse? For example, is there way to just hit record and play a kick drum pattern the way you would in a MIDI region? I can't find a way to do this, which seems odd.
Can Anyone help, please? I put in some drums and snares etc like on the video. I decided that I wanted to add some more samples but these don't show up in the live loops grid. Only way I can get the to show is to delete the live loops which then deletes all the sequences I have made.
MusicTechHelpGuy, correct me if I’m wrong (‘cos I can’t find out anywhere else): I’m right in saying that there’s no way to trigger INDIVIDUAL cells via MIDI at the moment in Logic? I want to assign play on/off of particular cells to a MIDI footswitch to trigger particular parts of song while I play, and I don’t think it can be done. Great channel!
I was just about to type "not that I know of...." but then I went and tried it out, and you CAN! I don't know if it will work with a footswitch though? I just set it up to work with the different beat pads on my novation launchkey, and I was able to trigger and stop individual cells. Just have to make sure the pay head is running.
I also just discovered that even if you assign different cells, if two cells are on the same track, you cannot play them at the same time. I knew that already, but it's something to keep in mind if you're trying to build a song by triggering different cells, and not triggering scenes.
