14-Year-Old Leaves Newborn With Customer at Jersey City Restaurant

- A teen girl left her newborn baby in the arms of a customer at a Jersey City restaurant and fled on May 19.
Walter A Cocca livestreamed this footage from El Patron, a restaurant in the city’s Greenville neighborhood, showing his girlfriend, Alease Scott, holding the baby girl, who was wrapped in brown cloth.
Cocca can be heard in the video explaining, in disbelief, what happened.
“I’m at my neighborhood restaurant with my special friend and a lady comes in and hands her a baby, apparently a newborn, and runs out,” Cocca says in the video.
According to local reports, the mother was a 14-year-old girl who walked up to the counter at the restaurant saying she found the infant.
In a follow-up video from the couple, Scott, who is trained in first aid and CPR, said she asked if she could check the baby’s vitals and noticed the baby needed oxygen. Scott said they needed to call 911, and the mother walked out of the restaurant, leaving the newborn with her.
First responders quickly showed up and began to question the couple about the mother’s whereabouts. They also gave Scott oxygen to administer to the infant, who began to cry shortly thereafter.
According to local reports, the teen mother was found, and Cocca posted a screenshot with an update from Jersey City Detective Joe Chidichimo, informing them that the baby is “perfectly healthy” and the mother is doing well too. Cocca told Storyful he and his girlfriend offered to be the baby’s godparents and would love to see the baby again.
The baby girl will be put up for adoption, and at this point, the 14-year-old is not facing charges, according to local reports.
Storyful reached out to the Jersey City PD but did not receive a response at the time of publishing.

After further research it truly warmed my heart to learn that the two bystanders offered to become the baby Godparents. The baby and mom are good and no charges were filed. I'm sure I'm late but it's new for me . The compassion shown here was remarkable. ❤❤❤

This made me cry. My 1st time 'doing it' I got pregnant and had a baby girl at 14. I was pressured to give my daughter up for adoption & at the last moment I decided to keep her. I worked, stayed in school & graduated a mom to a 3yr old. I'm now 41, my oldest daughter is 27 & I'm now a grandma to a 1yr girl😊 I subjected myself to great emotional financial and spiritual struggles, social judgements and challenges. I got no assistance from my family nor did I ask for it. I learned many lessons along the way. Every time I see my granddaughter, I'm filled with joy. I'm happy that they are both here & a part of my journey we call life. Many prayers for this baby and her mommy. No judgement, just much empathy, hope and love😊

The baby most likely will be put up for adoption. There are so many people out here that can't have children. This child could be a blessing to someone else.
So off what I heard on the news she asked this amazing woman if she was a nurse. The woman said she new cpr . So the police took the girl to the hospital and no charges were filled. The state has a law protecting mothers who give their baby's up to hospitals, fired dep, etc. Im sure to that scared little 14 year old, she made the best choice. I hope they help her more than just taking her to the e.r.

However this story truly breaks my entire heart as one who can’t have children of my own; that this young lady didn’t know any better to go to a fire station, police station or a hospital to give up her child in a safer manner. I believe the “Safe Haven Law” is in every state (I could be wrong). However I won’t judge the young lady but will pray for her and whatever her circumstances were that led to her making this difficult decision. I’m just glad at least that she chose these two people who were amazingly kindhearted to protect and care for that child until help arrived. Mentally they are still children. This damages the psyche of a child or might even encourage them to do mature things at an immature age.
The way that lady turned her full attention to and started caring for and nurturing that baby, she was so calm. It was like seeing God at work. So beautiful the compassion she showed. I’m aww struck.

The baby wasn't crying cause it was dying....it could barely breathe. And that man not telling the full story cause the restaurant got it on tape too. She came in there bleeding cause she just had the baby and the umbilical was still attached to the baby. They girl went into the restaurant asking for help. That's when the lady who you see holding the baby got up and started helping she took the baby after checking it cause apparently the girl wasn't able to that when she walked out...then the restaurant staff called 911. She didn't run 😂

I read a few articles and the 14 year old mother was found. She received medical treatment and the baby girl will be put up for adoption. The mother is not facing criminal charges. I hope this baby finds a loving family. And I'm glad the young mother had enough sense to give the baby away than to harm her. 🙏
