That new prototype is the perfect width for me, I'd pick those up in an instant. Thank you for pushing anatomical shapes into traditionally built footwear.
I absolutely love my OG S.M.U.G.S. Weston speaks truth when he talks about how they just keep getting more comfortable. For those of you that want a wider fit, I usually wear a US size 11. I bumped it up to a 12 and have no issues at all with width.
If you left them wide, I might be able to order a pair. All these nice shoes that I love are all too narrow. It would be so nice to finally have a very high quality anatomical sneaker.
Oh man, barefoot SMUGS is exciting!!! They're shaping up very well - I agree about bringing in the outside side back in some. Would love to see a pair in that CF Stead 'Waxy Commander' from the recent Docs unboxing(the wheatbuck Waxy Commander would look fantastic). It's honestly nice seeing products made out of GOOD suede, I've always been a big fan of that very saturated, matte look that a nice suede offers.
I really appreciate you intersecting wide toe/anatomical shoes and the quality footwear world. Waited a long time for a boot like the African Ranger. Thanks for that! Now I have a sneaker to look forward to!
The prototypes look good, man! I'm not sure I'd take more than a quarter inch or five/sixteenths off the width. More than that and you're probably losing the "hybrid" last and regressing right back to modern narrow lasts.
I was going to get some smugs, now i will wait for the barefoot version!!! A high top barefoot smug with the mugs 3.0 out sole would be sweet for hiking
High top barefoot smug is the way to go! Him showing that off has me intensely tormented. I want a smug, but that prototype is what so many of us have REALLY been looking for. Just make it high top!
take a note from Softstar for the barefoot footwear and have 2 different last options: one for narrow and mostly anatomical, and one for very wide toe splay
Take a last, cut it at the ball line, and then turn the toe section in medially, then fill the gap. Curve the last toward the big toe, don't change the shape. That's a way to get a pretty looking last that doesn't push on the big toe, to make it more anatomical. I'm not saying to actually cut a last, but do that while designing one.
Really hoping the restock has the black vibram sole option that we had with the muggs recently. Thats what made me buy some muggs. Im wearing them right now, breaking them in around the house.
I almost stopped the video after the black ones, I know I simply can’t wear the shoes with that toe box. Glad I stuck around! Sadly, I can’t wear true zero drop either due to an Achilles issue. I’d love to see the normal sole SMUGS with the wide toe box…basically like the Birkenstock Bend but with better materials.
I own the previous version of this shoe made in leather. I really love it but would change two things. (1) I'd make the strap on the back have a larger hole that I can put my finger in. I have to use a shoe horn to get the shoe on and (2) I'd use a more friendly sole for AZ summers. The first time I wore the boot in July in Phoenix the sole started melting on the sidewalk. No severe damage was done but it's become a non-summer shoe for me. To be fair, the shoe probably wasn't meant to be a summer shoe so it's not really a big deal. Thanks for making a great shoe! I hope this feedback is helpful.
The thin rounded off sole of the barefoot shoe makes it look like any other barefoot shoe. Ideally you'd keep the same type of outsole with the barefoot last, and also keep the upper construction the same as well. The new upper also looks cheaper.
i bought the og smugs and love them but i paid $357 shipped, at that price they are unbeatable, but now they are $488!!!! holy crap what happened? the ogs launched like 6 months ago?? i was going to get another pair in green because i love them, but not now
gorgeous colours. unfortunately the timing is just not going to work out for me, which is a shame because the look of these is one that i would actually use every day, unlike a lot of boots. Great demonstration that there really is a time and a place for good suede. Hopefully I'm ready for next time! definitely feel you on the lasting frustrations-- i can deal with _some_ narrowing but my toes need space, but i just think pure barefoot looks bulgy
They're cool shoes, but even fully broken in they caused some pretty significant damage to the tendons in my ankles after wearing them for several days walking heavy (city) miles. I'm used to wearing boots and high mileage, but something about the design of the SMUGS is uniquely uncomfortable. On the plus side, they held up fine.
Ngl would totally wear those barefoot last gorals already at that width. They look semi goofy but, pointy shoes were probably goofy as hell until everyone slowly got made to wear them. Being goofy seems good tradeoff for not permanently wrecking your big toe and getting bunions
Is there anyone who bought from the first drop? These look like the perfect shoe for me. However, I do a lot of walking on concrete and asphalt, wearing shoes at the heel pretty quickly. How much wear does the cup sole take? I know they can be re-soled, I'm just wondering how often I might need to do that.
@@Jake-bt3fc Right!? Shopping for footwear online is the worst. "If you normally wear a US#/EU#, order a size up." That kind of crap doesn't work. I've got a half size foot by most charts and end up wearing anything from 8 to 9.5, so there is no "normal" for me. Shoemakers should be required to list the insole length in millimeters and be done with these inaccurate sizes.
I will take this price over "rare" overpriced sneaker resale out there. Goral has chart length for their last on the website in millimeter. Your shoes are made in Asia now; they will mess up measurement for sure as they have different size chart over there. Wrong setting in factory -> shit luck.
@@CeliceDSCh I'm in victoria so I can literally just walk to viberg and buy boots there. I don't buy sneakers. Sorry you're stuck importing boots off the internet. Hope they fit.
@@Jake-bt3fc Sorry that you're stuck in walking distance. Internet is great to order Brannock Device. Redwing store can get me a correct measurement; their high tech scan work great. Russell Moccasin phone scan got my usual size as well. Having more samples will yield good result. I don't just buy boots, they would be suicidal on boats.
If you need a guinea pig, I can wear the shit out of a pair of boots. I usually wear Redwing 10877s for pretty much everything. But, I'm used to 8" boots. So, send me a pair of those blood leather Whites. Send me a pair of boots you want to see get worked hard. I'm repairing some sheathing and redoing the flashing around my chimney. Then, I got two trees that need to be cut and split for firewood. For the next few months, I'll be building a wood shop and a privacy fence. So, send me some boots. I'll wear the shit out of them and send them back after two months. You can put them on your show. I'll even give you the rights to the beauty shots. If you don't know if they are working wear or you need a myth buster, I'm here. I'll tell you if it can handle work.
I must be an anatomical weirdo in that I have to either size a shoe up so it’s wide enough to be comfortable, but this is uncomfortably long or I have to size the length for my foot and then have my toes cramped in on the sides. I’d give that barefoot smugs a go if I had an unlimited budget.
Interesting release! I look forward to seeing some tests on the suede to see how strong it is but the colours are gorgeous! An idea could be to reinforce suede with an "exoskeleton" of leather. Sort of like you did with the heels here but perhaps also around the lacing and a toe cap. Colour and breathability of suede but slightly more rigid. :)
What you want is a combination last. A narrow heel and midfoot and a wider toe box. These are not rare in the boot world. They would suit me as I have toes that spread and are actually the widest part of my foot. And that's the reason I won't currently buy another pair of Goral sneakers or boots as the last they use for all their footwear has an annoying toe shape that irritates my toes. And a wider size will be too wide at the heel.
I don't think the barefoot SMUGS are that bad looking. For those of us with a EE or E width depending on the last. I would be worried about spending that kind of money on pair that would not fir right.
Asking TH-cam comments for advice like asking chat gpt. You only ever get positive answers. After reading all the comments calling the prototype “perfect” I laughed out loud when I actually saw how ugly it was XD.
You could even say they are a SNUGG fit. XD Sorry, but my MUGGS are similar, only I like wearing them for walks; the weather has only started getting cold enough to bust them out again.
I love the look of Converse. I was a skater in the 80s and Converse were the go to shoe. Converse look good/ But, they are not comfortable at all. Please make them comfortable.

My thoughts as well. I think they nailed it already.
Same. That width behind the pinky toe is exactly what I need.
Is it just me or is the video corrupted for a few seconds from about 1:30?
Not just you.
Happened to me, too.
TH-cam doesn't want us to know how he laced them like that
Me too
The barefoot smug is my favorite out of all of the boots, keep it zero drop, keep it wide, anatomical foot shape, please!!!🦋👣
In what universe is that low top barefoot shoe a “boot” lmao. It’s closer to a slipper than a boot.
The prototype shape is perfect.

Unboxing is the art of reviving and healing the bruises of somebody by touching your fist to their faces and then pulling it away very quickly.
I would also like the wide last versions with the same height as normal smugs. I don't wear any low top shoes.

The Smugs were not sneakers that approached boot quality. They were uncomfortable dress shoes that approached sneaker appearance.

I have 4e wide feet so shoe shopping is very hard. I mostly just go with new balance and hoka. Most shoes are just M or D width.
Those barefoots just need that little extra creative push to make that sole interesting instead of that ergo only/pharmacy fashion and they’ll be top!
