Hi Motobob, congrats on the excellent video. I have the 1250 GSA since 2020 and when we compare the power with another bike from KTM etc, we don´t see one critical aspect is the torque. 143 Nm at 6250 rpm is the best torque and offroad makes a huge difference. the second thing is the weight. BMW is the only one with Cardan transmission, and if you take that out and put a chain is less 20 Kg.
As a long time street rider, I test rode a GS it had great handling, comfort, and nice smooth power for a boxer engine. Put it in the dynamic mode and yes it comes alive. I Could not find anything not to like there. And subsequently purchased one as a daily driver to add to my collection. The accessories available are within my taste. I added a Turing windshield, engine guards, and a super loud horn. And am enjoying putting many miles behind me !! In fact 4 of my friends have purchased after riding it. A nice well balanced package. 👍🏻👍🏻
I've owned 2, a 2016 GS Adventure and currently a 2022 R1250GS which I'm selling. These bikes are sold under a myth of traveling 'round the world in all kinds of terrain. We get the gear and the bags and then almost no one goes off-road. Like a Range Rover, sure it could go off-road but it never does. And for those that do, they quickly realize it's too big and heavy for off-roading for anyone other than expert dirt riders. Experts who will tell you to get a smaller bike for off-road adventures. Yes it's versatile, like a Swiss Army knife - but we don't use those gadgets either.
I have ridden a 1290 Adventure S for 2500km in the alps and after that a GS 1250 for 30mins. So not enough time to compare in depth. But i am not so sure why everyone raves so much about the engine. The KTM twin has much more power on top and is more direct. Sure the 1250 starts strong but it is also over very soon.
Got one in June this year, best bike I've ever had! I don't know how they can improve the perfect bike unless I guess you look at all the after market accessories! I guess the bike would be even more expensive if they added all these extra bits to it, on the positive side it gives business to the 3rd party suppliers.
I have a 2020 1250GS TE and probably the thing I'd like most that I haven't already got is the blind spot warning like the system that's currently fitted to the latest Ducati Multistrada. In fact I think every bike should have that as standard.
Good luck in the West Country. You are well positioned there for rides to Wales, South West and the South Coast. As ever with these bikes we have to figure out exactly what we want the bike for and choose accordingly. There is always a compromise. Good review as always. Cheers.
I ride a rather old Beamer with a telelever 1999r1100s This configuration of suspension is by far my favorite way to tour, having all that stress shared through the frame keeps the feel very consistent regardless of conditions. Also it is very easily adjusted, the knob I right in front of the tank , mine is manual and stock, I’ve ridden the same bike with an Öhlins aftermarket front end and that is amazing. I really can’t imagine how plush the tele is on the GS with an active suspension. Nine out of ten when I see another BMW on the road, it’s a GS and in the states I RARELY see an ADV that isn’t a GS.
I have a 2020, great bike. However, the BMW (Hayes) front brake calipers were leaking and replacing under warranty with Brembo units. The Brembo brakes are 100% more responsive feeling and confidence inspiring. If you can chose, get the Brembos.
Interesting comment, I've said the same as you for years n years, having had hondas a Zx7r and a Zx10r for 15 years.... i was about to pack up biking completely as I'd been everywhere in the uk and Europe but then sat on my mates GS and thought, Why Not, I'm Only 70 lets start again ! So bought an 07 Oilhead ..... I'm absoloutely addicted to it ! Try One !
Many ppl say BMW R1250GS/A is the best in ADV motorcycle segment, in the past I never drove an BMW. I own a 2021 Africa Twin Adv Sports (AT-AS), so I had high expectations for R1250 GS compared to my AT. Today I got an opportunity to test-drive R1250 GS, honestly I didn't like it (maybe I'm used to my AT). Few thing I noticed 1. Handle-bar position - IMO AT has relaxed handlebar position compared to R1250. 2. Immediately I felt engine heat from the boxer engine, even after riding for multiple hours on AT I barely notice engine heat. 3. Foot pegs, shifter & rear brake position is more comfortable in AT than BMW. 4. Even though R1250 GS is heavier than AT ES, I feel the speed. While driving 75-80+ miles on Interstate, I felt the speed on BMW. On AT I don't feel that speed, 80+ miles engine is pretty relaxed at 4000/rpm. 5. Parallel-Twin engine/exhaust sound has more grunt/thump compared to the boxer engine. I really like how AT sounds. 6. Brakes are much more effective on BMW compared to AT. BMW excels in braking. Maybe I'm missing something on BMW, pls let me know if you think otherwise... No more second thought of trading AT for R1250GS, IMO for me AT-AS is more comfortable than BMW.
Not to mention the Yamaha tenere 700 will school this thing in real off road situations. At a fraction of the cost. And on the highway.....the cops are going to be on you when this thing passed the Yamahas top speed.
Giving them to Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman for Long Way Down was a marketing master stroke. Even though it’s what, 15 years ago now I still think the GS is riding that wave. The only thing that will spoil,it’s image is it’s buyers. It’s like the Mercedes G Wagen, an awesome piece of equipment but makes a statement that not everyone will be comfortable with.
I think people from a sporty bike /super naked bike groups will have KTM superA or a Ducati Multi over a GS but I recon the average GS rider thinks and feels that the GS is quick enough for them and the biggest problem will be the chain drive. If you had a shaft driven bike for some time now and the GS owners tend to chamge their GS for a newer GS the thought of chain adjustment / lubrication will drive them mad. Ps I'm not a GS owner but I owned bikes with chain drive and shaft drive. You change the dif oil once every 10K mies or every time U change the back tyre is much more enjoyable then spraying your chain on a long tour im the rain every 3 fuel stops
Great review, was looking forward to hearing what you think of it. I own the 1200GS but with the same digital dash and auto levelling suspension. They're a game changer from the previous water cooled model. You are right about the cockpit and seeing the back of the lights etc. I too thought it felt unfinished at first, but you don't see it after a while and it adds to the rugged charm. The problem with owning one of these is what to switch to next. I'm desperately wanting something different but genuinely can't think of what that would be without causing major regrets.
The new Triumph 1200 Rally beats this bike in nearly every aspect unless you like the tele front ends of the GS. Go ride one of the Triumphs and report back.
Its all about depreciation rather than the “list” price. Cheapest new motorcycle in its class to run . I lost more on a second hand bandit than my new GS.
Had a test ride yesterday. I'm thinking to replace my VFR1200X with something more up-to-date. First impressions- I'm 185 cm tall - sitting position. I have lean slightly forward towards handlebars. Knees angle is higher than in VFR1200X. After half an hour started feeling pain in my back. Standard screen is way to small. Air stream hits me directly in helmet, making terrible noise and causing buffeting. From the other side, suspension is superb, dynamic ESA does phenomenal work. Fantastic TFT display. Spotted something strange with gearbox - 4th gear was lagging compared to others, and couple of times ended up with excessive revving. Would I buy it? Rather no. Way to expensive, expected much more for this kind of money. I think I'll stay with Crosstourer for the while.
Have BMW improved the quality of the nuts and bolts? I had 2 new Adventures, 2004 & 2008 both were stored and maintained properly but both started to rust very quickly.
The mighty boxer with its weight being so low kick some butt in a city situation. Until your ride one it is difficult to understand how that low slung wait affects handling in such a positive way. Excellent video as usual
Give you a sub, great forest for testing! I’m on an ‘05 GS with Öhlins, and that telelever will never say dive. Just this morning had a busy light turn red and I was stopping very short, then just roll up to the line like Ho-hum.
I’m still a relative noob to the motorcycling world, and I’m only on my second bike now, picked up the new BMW F900r (love it), and I could never understand why there’s the hate against keyless ride, but if I infer from the video, not all brands that implement it utilize the key fob with the fork lock and fuel cap?? Personally that’s what really sold me on keyless ride is the ability to just open the cap to fill up without having to jiggle and fuss with the key from the ignition then trying to open the gas cap. I don’t know, obviously it’s just a very mild annoyance, but it’s one I certainly don’t miss on my commutes and a feature I didn’t think I’d want until I got it 😊
:) gottcha.. However, I keep my fob in my backpack, it is literally the most consistent thing I ride with aside from my boots. Sometimes when leaving for work I leave my pac on the floor just out of range to start the bike. :/ and typing this just gave me an idea,,,, I'm gonna make a pocket in my boot for the fob. I like my other bikes with their single manual keys for this reason. Safe rides. 👍 I have actually gone to an event and left my jacket in the trunk with the fob in the jacket before!
The other day my key dropped out of my pocket while riding. Spent an hour going up and down looking for it and luckily found it in the gutter! BMW only provide one key too and a copy is 250 euros. I'm not a huge fan for these reasons.
Same. After 20 years of riding used bikes the wear marks of other people’s key fobs on the handle bars has always annoyed me. Consigning this to the past is reason enough to welcome keyless.
Great review, fantastic bikes, I had the air cooled 1200 triple black; which was worth around 8k so great value too for such a machine, and to this day I don’t know why I sold it 😏 👊🏻
You don't need more power. Where I live in Melbourne, Australia the government has just bought a heap of new red light /mobile speed cameras, choppers etc. This bike has all the real world power you can can use. Brilliant bike. I've got adaptive cruise control in my car so it's good but I can live without it. $21K? Worth every penny I don't have either. Harley's Pan America is $32K. All academic really.
I enjoyed my 160 000 kilometers of BMW Boxer ownership, but access to buy and replace parts was not easy. The last straw came in two strokes; a $40 idler gear was going to cost $1000+ to replace, and the parts and service guy had the same attitude as Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi. So, I sold the thing, joined a BMW victim support group and swore I’d kick the habit. And, now this - clearly a relapse is imminent; but, here’s the question: Is it time to call my support group sponsor . . . or visit a dealer?
Love the GS - Owned a new 2016 1200 Adventure and swapped that out for a new 2020 1250GS - amazing machines - it's just the weight of the thing...and I agree the price point is high! Great vid!
Have one (air-oiled cooled). Bought new it in 2007. The bike has none of the electronics this one has. BMW should consider to bring out a GS KIS (keep it simple) and lower the price of that model considerably. Then they would have place 1 2 and 3 :-)
Too perfect for me, I owned the 2019 model (screwed one year later as they added adaptive headlights as a standard) - but the rides were like a magic carpet , sold it after 8000 Kilometers and went back to something pre ride by wire again. Not saying it's a bad choice but it lacks character ..just my personal opinion. Ah, and bolt & nuts still prone to oxidation if you're not careful to blow residual water off the bike after a wash or a ride_in_the_rain (like 90% of the time in this neck of the woods).....
I ride a 2020 R1250RS, so very similar and I agree with everything you said. I think you missed one point about the engine and that's the torque and how tractable it is. I also agree about the price and luckily, the RS was quite a bit less expensive.
I remember the first time I’ve ever been on a GS. It was the R1250 GSA and my dealer said “don’t test ride it, trust me” I’m like why? He’s like “ just don’t do it,dude” So I’m out on the road test riding it. When I got back, he saw the look on my face. i said “you were right” he laughs and said “‘let me know when you want to do the paperwork, I’ll be here”
Im planning on buying a motorcycle soon but not many people do a good review of the bmw s1000xr...My option is: 1)KTM 1290 Super Adventure s 2)BMW S1000XR #Purely on road riding. Which would you guys choose?
Well i left the four cylinders to buy a KTM super adventure v twin. My previous bike was a kawasaki zzr1400. I am over the moon with my purchase. The power is so much quicker available which gives me a lot of riding fun in a much more comfortable way. Put in 5k km in 4 months effortlessly.. To each their own offcourse! I suggest testrides. Have fun with making your choice! Oh btw, i only drive on road.
@@erwindenengelsen8144 I am the original owner of a 2003, 160hp zzr1200 with 53k miles. I'm thinking I might deserve to upgrade. The XR and SAS are on my radar as a replacement but I have not ridden either. The last twin I rode ( a Ducati Hypermotard ) had horrible engine breaking that created a very herky-jerky riding experience for me. Does the SAS have any of that?
Everyone’s different but I wouldn’t touch an XR. I had one as a loan bike during service a few weeks ago. Felt buzzy and flat a low rpms then turns into a monster as you get up the Rev range. I stopped riding 4 pots years ago, twins are far more enjoyable on the road (to me, for how I ride) so the KTM would be the one for me, no question.
I am only at second :46. What I can make out is better ground clearance and a touch higher on the boxer. Please tell me they un-softened the suspension for that rare tangle with a more aggressive off-road. I have a '17 R1200 Ralley, SOOOOOOOO versatile, but I will say I cannot find a setting for washboards, and if most of the trail is more than 4 inches travel with a frequency of anything less than 9-10 feet I just find myself backing off and rolling gentle.
And I'll have to pause at 7:00,,,, neither the Multistrada or the Tiger 1200 are as multi-purpose built. I left out the KTM because I think it is more purpose built,,,, for off-road.
@@dianacarvajal8917 so what ? Apple make iPhones in China. There is a difference between quality stuff made in China under quality control and cheap stuff designed in China.

Just got back from riding the Rallye pack GS on & off road around the Spanish mountains, clocked up 400 miles with the Toro Adventure. The GS is just a awesome bit of engineering setting the bench mark in the industry. I did miss the heated seat as I have it on my own GS TE I bought in May 21' & clocked up 4k miles. I still can't get my head around after for the first time taking the GS off road & it just munching up rocks/gravel/puddles in Enduro mode, then switching to Dynamic it behaves so fantastically around the twisties! I have the Pearl white TE but I do equally like the Rallye colours. Going to the bike show tomorrow so if you are considering a 21' spec GS the price should come down a little after the 22' model is revealed! Motobob thanks for the vid, take a look how I got on with the on/off roading in Spain, I just posted a vid although just started TH-cam'ing so hopefully will get better lol...
How they let you weave through standing traffic without anyone getting really angry is amazing to me. Here in the US we generally accept that traffic rules apply to everyone. Also, you have to consider that people have guns in every other car...
Recently got a BMW R1250R...amazing bike, really like it but I think a GS would be a very good follow-up when I need more comfort. We have a lot of bad roads here in Belgium (kinda like UK) and the R1250R while also having ESA, can be a bit stiff (especially in the front). I'm 173cm high, would a regular GS be a good fit for me?
I’ve got a 17 plate 1200 Rallye and it has much of the features of this bike. No doubt the 1250 is better but it would probably cost me at about £11k to upgrade! Kinda makes a used 1200 a bit of a bargain in comparison. 125bhp on the 1200 and torquey too, more than enough on the road.
Worth upgrading, I’m glad I swapped my 1200TB for the 1250. Worth every penny if you do. Plenty of playful enjoyment to be had from your 1200 if you don’t ....
Currently have a Tiger 900 GT Pro but considering a 1250 GS, just concerned about the weight, shifting it around manually, I find the Tiger relatively easy to move, any issues?
Thanks a lot for great review. Very intertwining, as usual. This is one of the Flagships from BMW which is awesome but not affordable. When you have a chance, if you can, review the younger sibling, the F750GS, pleaaaaaaaaaaaase :)

Cheers.
I ride a rather old Beamer with a telelever 1999r1100s
This configuration of suspension is by far my favorite way to tour, having all that stress shared through the frame keeps the feel very consistent regardless of conditions.
The moment I got on my GS and drove of the dealer lot, it felt like the bike was tailor made for me. It is simply perfect handling wise.
Tq for the review mate...😍😍...loved it... great job ✌🏼
I have a 2020, great bike. However, the BMW (Hayes) front brake calipers were leaking and replacing under warranty with Brembo units. The Brembo brakes are 100% more responsive feeling and confidence inspiring. If you can chose, get the Brembos.
The division of Hayes which makes the BMW branded calipers is owned by BREMBO.
I’m waiting on this service before I can pick my bike up from the dealer. It’s been 3 weeks.
Not my cup of tea, but it looks great. I really like the bmw colours on the gs.
Great review Bob
Cheers DE! I think it’s a great looking bike too
Interesting comment, I've said the same as you for years n years, having had hondas a Zx7r and a Zx10r for 15 years.... i was about to pack up biking completely as I'd been everywhere in the uk and Europe but then sat on my mates GS and thought, Why Not, I'm Only 70 lets start again ! So bought an 07 Oilhead ..... I'm absoloutely addicted to it ! Try One !
that what i thought till i test rode one... and i've had over 50 bikes they really are brilliant i bought a new gs adventure
Ha ha haaaaarrrr......... 😊
Few thing I noticed
How much horsepower do you really use riding on public roads. The love affair with horsepower numbers is crazy.
Mine is full throttle for many moments on rides. It’s exhilarating and compelling. ( I’m quite a slow rider too !)
My bike is on full throttle all the way. Then again it’s only a 125.
Not to mention the Yamaha tenere 700 will school this thing in real off road situations. At a fraction of the cost. And on the highway.....the cops are going to be on you when this thing passed the Yamahas top speed.
136 HP isn’t a lot of horsepower .
@@petermcgarva7207 hahahaha actually it is...on a bike. Do you even ride?
G'day BOB. Great video, All questions answered and yes it's worth the big $$$$$
No its not
It is. I’m a cheapskate and gritted my teeth and bought one. After momentary buyers remorse, No regrets
Itchy boots is winning this one, the RE Himalayan is pretty much sold out
I didn’t have the 21 G. So went and got one of the last used 1200 exclusive. Loving it.
Scottoiler...
I can relate to your comment
Can’t wait for you to try the R1250RS
Great review, was looking forward to hearing what you think of it. I own the 1200GS but with the same digital dash and auto levelling suspension. They're a game changer from the previous water cooled model. You are right about the cockpit and seeing the back of the lights etc. I too thought it felt unfinished at first, but you don't see it after a while and it adds to the rugged charm. The problem with owning one of these is what to switch to next. I'm desperately wanting something different but genuinely can't think of what that would be without causing major regrets.
KTM 1290SA
If you still want a bike as big as the gs i think the musltistrada wouldnt be a bad choice
The new Triumph 1200 Rally beats this bike in nearly every aspect unless you like the tele front ends of the GS. Go ride one of the Triumphs and report back.
I own a 2017 model & they are great, but the weight & price is getting daft.
Great review 👍
Its all about depreciation rather than the “list” price. Cheapest new motorcycle in its class to run . I lost more on a second hand bandit than my new GS.
Wonderful review. You have definitely put this on my buying list.
Do yourself a favour mate....get and Africa Twn...I love mine 2020 DCT non adventure model SHUMBA
Have BMW improved the quality of the nuts and bolts? I had 2 new Adventures, 2004 & 2008 both were stored and maintained properly but both started to rust very quickly.
This is end of 2021
I want to come back next year a day like this being a proud owner of GS 1250
Nothing is impossible with God ...
I use radar in my car , it’s a fantastic safety feature , I think all bikes should have it , I’m sure it would save lives
The mighty boxer with its weight being so low kick some butt in a city situation. Until your ride one it is difficult to understand how that low slung wait affects handling in such a positive way. Excellent video as usual
136 hp more than enough. If anything reduce weight! Best bike ever!
Best overview ever 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Nice review mate I pick mine up in the morning 👍

I LOVE my R1250GS! I can't wait to see what the R1300GS looks like!
They all look the same
Huge fan of your videos 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I would love to see a few people review both the GSA and Triumphs new 1200 Rally side by side and give a non biased review of which they like better.
Thank you, a very good review.
Great review, fantastic bikes, I had the air cooled 1200 triple black; which was worth around 8k so great value too for such a machine, and to this day I don’t know why I sold it 😏 👊🏻
Great review Bob, feel like I can talk GS now! A great bike, it has it all, but it really needs to at that price.
It's time to visit your Honda dealership...Africa Twin.....SHUMBA
Love the GS - Owned a new 2016 1200 Adventure and swapped that out for a new 2020 1250GS - amazing machines - it's just the weight of the thing...and I agree the price point is high! Great vid!
RT , serene in the cockpit ! What a great description. ( I’m close to swapping my 2020 R1250GS TE HP for an RT)
Best bike ever!!!!❤😂🎉
Have one (air-oiled cooled). Bought new it in 2007.
The bike has none of the electronics this one has.
BMW should consider to bring out a GS KIS (keep it simple)
and lower the price of that model considerably.
Then they would have place 1 2 and 3 :-)
I love it your bike brooo....that it's my dream 😍😍Best regard from Indonesia
Too perfect for me, I owned the 2019 model (screwed one year later as they added adaptive headlights as a standard) - but the rides were like a magic carpet , sold it after 8000 Kilometers and went back to something pre ride by wire again. Not saying it's a bad choice but it lacks character ..just my personal opinion. Ah, and bolt & nuts still prone to oxidation if you're not careful to blow residual water off the bike after a wash or a ride_in_the_rain (like 90% of the time in this neck of the woods).....
I bought a new K1300S for 10 grand in 2010 so 21k for this albeit 11 years on it seems like bike prices have well outperformed wages
Almost everything has outperformed wages.
I bought a brand new busa in 2007 for 8 and half grand! My wages are the same now as the were then??🤣🤣

Great review. Can you tell me what jacket you are wearing in the video?
I ride a 2020 R1250RS, so very similar and I agree with everything you said. I think you missed one point about the engine and that's the torque and how tractable it is. I also agree about the price and luckily, the RS was quite a bit less expensive.
Another great review thanks buddy… would it make a good first bike once passing test?
Can you upload the configurations for this bike? Customizations, all other changes etc.
Black on Black looks bad ass.
I remember the first time I’ve ever been on a GS. It was the R1250 GSA and my dealer said “don’t test ride it, trust me” I’m like why? He’s like “ just don’t do it,dude” So I’m out on the road test riding it. When I got back, he saw the look on my face. i said “you were right” he laughs and said “‘let me know when you want to do the paperwork, I’ll be here”
Great graphics in the video !
Im planning on buying a motorcycle soon but not many people do a good review of the bmw s1000xr...My option is:
1)KTM 1290 Super Adventure s
2)BMW S1000XR
#Purely on road riding.
Which would you guys choose?
I would choose the XR, it's a 4-cylinder superbike. The SA shines off-road.
I just bought the BMW S1000XR Sport and it’s insanely good! That said, the KTM would be great too.
Can you please let me know the front facing camera that you have mounted on your handle bar?
Solid review!!! I agree packed with tech and represents the best of motorcycling today. Wish I had 21k to enjoy one
Simply mind blowing 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
And another pause. The Akrapovic sounds meaty and clean,, but I prefer the SC Project with variable exhaust valve removed. Just sayn'
Bear in mind that price is PLUS luggage which makes the RT and K even more competitive against the GS
You have ride the África twin and the 1250 GS , what have you preferred?
For daily and road use mostly :)
Perfect review Rob. Have to say again, my F850GS Sport has all the same tech and half the price. You really need to borrow one from BMW
But it has no boxer engine :) and no drive shaft!
And the F850GS has a Chinese made engine
@@dianacarvajal8917 Indian made

I find with gs it will still look purposeful in 20 years time, I get passed on 15 year old ones and they still look uber cool and a machine to do a job, if the rear light is a issue look into Denali cansmart and add a b6 brake light, great review 👌🖖
Filtering through traffic is legal in the UK
I brought a fully kitted out gsa with full luggage for a lot less than 21 k. Deals out there just haggle.
Yes it’s a nice bike, but quite heavy for wheeling around the garage to park it etc.
What model is R1250GS TE? Their configurator confuse me...
Thanks a lot for great review. Very intertwining, as usual. This is one of the Flagships from BMW which is awesome but not affordable. When you have a chance, if you can, review the younger sibling, the F750GS, pleaaaaaaaaaaaase :)
