I am from the southern part of the state of Georgia and was used to being surrounded by gorgeous oaks draped with Spanish moss. When I was a about 6 my little sister and I were visiting my grandmother out in the country. There were huge oaks with the moss hanging all the way to the ground and my sister and I pulled swathes of it off the tree and wrapped it around us like fur stoles we saw ladies wear (it was the 50’s). My grandmother saw us and yelled out, “don’t do that, that stuff is full of red bugs!” Red bugs, or chiggers, are awful microscopic bugs that burrow in the skin and itch like crazy, and in its natural habitat can indeed inhabit the moss. We immediately tossed it.
But I have lived in the Seattle area, which I love, since 1996, and really missed Spanish moss, until just a couple of weeks ago when I was in a local nursery picking up a few plants, and lo and behold, Spanish moss was being sold in small swags for about $12! I snatched it up and took it home to hang down the side of my plant stand by the sliding door to my second floor balcony which is nearly always open. I love to watch it sway gently in the breeze and remember those gorgeous giant oaks draped with it.

That stuff grows in Florida like a weed!! Literally every tree has tons and tons dangling everywhere. That's crazy how expensive they try to sell it in other areas.

I recently purchased some Spanish moss from the Drunken Gnome Air Plant Supply Company and of course I have placed a paper clip on the piece of wire that is plastic coated in order to hang it easier 🤦🏼‍♀️ Perhaps if I’d spent more time on their site I would have learned about not using metal… Fortunately, I’m watching your video to gain some insight. This is the first video of yours I’ve watched and it’s very informative. Thank you. BTW, I’m very happy with my purchase of air plants and I will watch more of your videos as I’m guessing you cover them too 🙂

Hi Brad. I really appreciate this video. I've had Spanish Moss for 5 years. It is about 5 foot long and I have it draped over a cross that I made out of driftwood. It hangs on my patio and I live in Florida. I mist it daily and run the hose over it too. I bought it at a farmers market and It was $5. I live in South Florida so it does not grow on trees like it does in North Florida. I had never thought of making more bundles of it so I will now! Thank you so much!

Thanks for the video on the Spanish moss Brad - I wish I would've pick some up at the orchid show, I saw it for five dollars for a very nice size bundle. Not sure if you seen my Facebook post but my greenhouse is finished I moved my plants in last night and oh my god what a difference in temperature I hope I don't have anything die. Going to order my mist maker tomorrow, have my fish tank already in there with water, just overwhelmed with everything that I need to do now.

wow never thought I would see somebody actually growing moss in a green house. Kinda cool though. I also live in Florida and my trees are completely covered dragging the ground with it. I love it. Nothing compares to the beauty of an oak tree with spanish moss blowing in the wind. It does get very heavy though when it rains and puts much weight on some limbs. I also make fences with the moss that falls on the ground which is constantly. Thanks for the video !

Great video! I've kept a small clump of Spanish moss for three years now...indoors in Colorado without a greenhouse. I can keep it somewhat "tangled" as it seems to do well sitting loosely connected atop my phalanopsis orchid pots and I don't pay much attention to which side is up. Just make sure it has adequate air flow. The main thing though, is that it gets strong yet filtered south/west light, and I mist it daily with rain/snow water and additionally make sure it gets a thorough 1-2 hour soak (sometimes even overnight!) in a bucket once a week if it needs it. If it keeps making more of itself I may have to employ your clip trick! Thanks for the metal info; I'd no idea this was a problem. Best, L.

Lucky here in Perth W.A. as my air plants are all outside in up to 40 d celcius and get a spray every second day, and ive gone from 5 plants 5 years ago to over a hundred of them. I pull them apart then use a thick rubber band to tie them then make a plastic coated hook to tie them onto baskets, orchids, tree branches , draped over my many tillasandias as a sun barrier, and love them so much. They also look good with bromeliads, that ive tied onto totem poles . I couldnt dunk them ad I have far too many. I spray hydroponic fertaliser on them 3- 4 times a year, well diluted. Where are you situated in the world? I love the orchid hooks, I have them on my dendrobiums, so migjt try them on the moss. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Your arrangement is beautiful. We just had Matthew go through and a lot of limbs came down with air plants on them. Some really big and some small. I see where it talks about submerging the plants couple of times a week as misting them did not give enough water. If you make an arrangement like you did and hot glue it to driftwood then how do you water them.

Perfect plant for my bathroom. It's usually humid as a result of taking a shower every morning and has one frosted glass window so I don't have to worry about direct sunlight.

Hey my bathroom is not one bit sunny really! it has those glazed over windows that you can't see through and light is there mostly end of the day - it loved it! I don't think I would trust it being in our sun as we have harsh sun here! I will do a video shortly about mine on my channel thekimmyconnection if you want to sub there I just started and will show you all about mine!

Hi Brad,I started watching your videos this month, and i really ike them, it feels like i know you because your vids are so natural and simple and full of good first hand info, and it doesnt feel like u learned it from a book, and i like that very much. i also just started my own tillandsia collection and that how i found you, before that, i was not able to even keep a cactus alive and i love my little air plants because thay are very easy to take care of and also very forgiving. So...i have a question for you, it seems like spanish moss is very expensive everywhere, and i was wondering how to help it multiply faster, and also i keep sinking my plant in normal tap water and it gets grey like after 4 hours of its bath, and i dont know if that means it needs more water or plant food, or if it just was shipped to me in bad condition......wish i could show you pictures.... can i do that on your facebook page?? thanks so much for sharing and for being super funny with that clip on you ear. i know is an old video but buddy keep the tillandsia videos coming....oo oo also i did get some seeds of it cause it came with some bloomed flowers that had exploted and did what u did with ur seeds and the yougurt container, just did it in a covered plastic thingamajig to help with the hummmidity. =) xo Marce.

Do you have to worry spider mites on the moss when growing indoors? I was thinking of adding some to my large foxtail palm I have growing in my home but the palm tree is a constant battle with spider mites. I frequently mist it with a mild solution of water and dawn dish soap which keeps the mites in check.

You inspired me to purchase some Spanish Moss. Your video is very informative but I'm not sure about fertizing it. Can you please let me know if you do fertilize and if so how often and what type.
    Thanks

I have hundreds of tillandsia usinoidies , ( old mans beards) , and use a fine water sprayer with diluted liquid fertiliser in it about 3 times a week. All hanging on bromeliads and other air plants. From Perth West Australia.

Question: I have an air plant garden with a couple pieces of this lime/green/yellow lichen. How much/often should I be watering this lichen to keep it healthy and growing? Also, can it just be misted or should I soak it in water every so often?

Ive heard that spanish moss is cross with metal however, about a year ago I saw a large large spanish moss growing healthy on a metal mesh that was meant for a climber plant.

Hi Brad, I have a question. Can I mount an air plant that I recently received in or on the Spanish moss and soak them both at the same time?
