Thank you (!!!) for discussing air purifying qualities of plants! I really dislike when my co-workers or boss talk up the qualities of a plant to a customer (garden center) by mentioning that it'll purify the air. The last time a customer asked me if a Spathiphyllum would purify their air I said "Yeah... If you bought about 400 of them for your bedroom".
So glad you did this! I keep killing mine no matter how much I try and dry them out after deep watering them. The fan idea is great! I think I'm going to try one again. Thanks Sean!
@@onlyplants Thanks! Should be ok. It was fine for a long time but I can tell it rotted...so my guess it was too wet too long and I didn't get all the water out or something
Just started my plant journey and your videos have been so helpful, considering my country shares the same climate as yours. It's quite difficult to come by quality content in English for plant care in SEA but being able to see you work your plants and watch your progress has been very encouraging!
I’ve been recently putting a little more care into my air plants and this video was very timely! Thanks for another excellent video! I love the big air plant that you have! It is so pretty! 🤩
You explained well, I like the way you express yourself being timid and simple..I like the way you give information..it's my first time to take care of airplant..thank you.
warning to people, especially in the united states: chlorinated tap water is not so great for these plants. please let water sit for a bit or use rain, filtered, or distilled water for this to ensure long and happy lives
Until I read about not using tap water here in the US, my air plants kept dying. I do fill gal. jugs of water and leave them uncapped. Since using that water, I really haven't lost any, in fact, they have bloomed and given me a few pups.
@@ArtByCaroline123 yes because normal tap water has chlorine in it. letting it sit out without a lid/cap allows the chlorine to evaporate. letting it sit overnight should be more than good enough.
Just bought my first two: a capitata hybrid & pseudobailey. I have bright shade in my patio that my staghorn fern , tillandsia, and birds nest fern enjoy so I hope they’ll be happy out there among them 🙏
Thank you for showing me how to "water" my airplane. I wish I had been able to watch it before.... My zerographica died. Lol LOVE your channel thank you 🥰
Those Pothos ivy and Peace Lily are very beneficial also in aquariums for help keeping the water clean. I ordered these small 3in diameter plastic hydroponic baskets from Amazon Prime. I will use suction cups in my aquarium in order to grow plants in them.
You have such nice plants. I would like to find a plant like your biggest one. I have some of the smaller plants. Now I know how to water them, thank you for the tips and for a great video.
Hi Sean , I hang mine near my kitchen window to get natural air flow on a long twine with tiny pegs , that way they get all those partials from the air and also dry out naturally after a good soak , great video ! Love the large one 🥰💞🙌🧤👒🦘🐨
I swear you live in the perfect place for plants, your home is beautiful. Also the space tattoo is bad as$, enjoying your videos,..from one plant parent to another 😊 stat safe.
I really enjoyed watching this video and have subscribed as a result! I have 3 small plants and hang them up in the little metal cages you get on top of Prosecco bottle corks, (or champagne if you're lucky). They can be dunked in their bath easily! I'm looking forward to some flowers when they are more mature.
We were talking about a lot of the routes that were on your air plants. In the wild this is just my opinion with those roots be the roots that attach itself to the tree or bark or whatever? Cincinnati Ohio
I have 2 basket airplants hanging under the trees - they bloom some tiny purple flowers- dry out fast . I use hose to water - or spay them twice a day .
Thank you so much for the detailed video! After watching your video I will get one. I didn't catch the type of fertilizer you used when you soaked them, please let me know.
I use my aquarium water as a free mild fertilizer and I actually soak or dunk the air plants in the aquarium. The desert species plants especially the bulbous ones must be dunked and not soaked. I dry all of the plants upside down for 2 hours after gently shaking them out.
Hello. Thank you for your detailed explanation on care of air plants. What are your thoughts on using tap water? Other care explanations would suggest using only rainwater or distilled water for indoor watering or allowing tap water to sit overnight to reduce the harmful chlorine and other chemical water utility additives. Thank you.
That highly depends on the water you get in the tap. City water is highly processed… leaving water exposed to air for a day may remove some chemicals/minerals but not all. Maybe those filter jugs would be a better solution if your tap water is burning your plants?
@@onlyplants Thank you for your response. I have used tap water and ours is from a municipal utility water source but I'm guessing it's heavily treated. I started using distilled water but I never noticed any burning. Appreciate your thoughts as I am relatively new to these air plants. So far so good!
Excellent core points for tillandsia culture. So glad to see the gloriously beautiful tillandsia xerographica as the poster boy for today's video. This species of tillandsia is one of my favourites, really a true gem, nature's gift from Guatemala to the world!!! May I ask, is this the only xerographica in your collection? Or do you have a few of them?
as usual - thanks sean, I got a few air plants bfr and of cos being a serial killer that I am ... kill them. so, I swear off them. once again, you are stirring curiosity and confidence (again! itchy backside!) to perhaps get 1 ..... more to try??!!!! useful tips and video ONCE again! Thanks much app and watching you to chill on 1st CNY! ;P
Never had an air plant before. After watching this video I'm more confident perhaps will give it a try. Aaah all those yakult bottles for propagations right?
I saw somewhere on Summer Rayne Oakes' youtube channel that Tillandsias tend to hold on better to Lava rocks than to cork. I don't know if all species behave that way, but did you try to put it on a rock and let the roots hold on naturally, without using glue? Maybe with a wire which provides temporary support. I like to hear if you tried it and what are the results.
❤😊👍.. A request. Can you plizzz do your house home tour in n out ? Cos m dyingggg to see it 😊... and also plisss show us your entire garden area over view...
What is your recommended soaking weekly time frame because I have lost so many airplanes to rot. The Silvery fuzzy ones seem to die with anything beyond a very brief dunk. The general advice of soaking them for 20 minutes or longer seems to rot my plants. My plants are all indoor with very bright indirect light. The species that I had the worst luck with is Bulbosa and Streptophyllis. Ionantha are colorful. Caput of Medusa is my favorite. I wish I could succeed with Bulbosa.
experts recommend soaking them up to 8 hours... the key is to drain them completely dry, making sure no water is left in the crown. Give it very good airflow, and some direct sunlight. If its not in excellent light conditions I may recommend only misting them and never soaking.
Hello! Thanks for this video. It’s super helpful. I’ve had airplants twice and they all eventually died. 😢 I think I know what I did wrong now because of this video! 😅 Yay!🎉 Can I ask a couple questions? First, what are those blue fertilizer pieces/pellets that you use? Also, where do you keep yours? (Inside or outside).. And finally, what part of the country (or what country) are you in? I’m in northwest Florida now and I’m trying to figure out the best situation for the air plants. I’ve had them in the Midwest before and they didn’t survive. Thank you so much!!! 😊
I have kept airplants both indoors and out. I live in Jakarta Indonesia so its a tropical climate. The care is quite different indoors vs outdoors… but the concept is the same. You want to keep them on the dry side most of the time. They can rot very easily if its pooling water or get too little light and airflow.
dont worry, it takes a long time for the plant to die after blooming. i have a T. Ionantha thats 2 years old with the mother plant very very much intact. (the day i bought it, its flower was already spent and had already started to make pups)
I wanted to make them onto an interior design project and have them fixed on a surface ....... I wonder if they have to be soaked? Or mist is good enough for everyday?
I just dunk my small air plants under the tap and let them dry upside-down. They're still alive, I neglect them too, never killed one though. I put mine outside in summer and they turned pink.
I think I killed my tillandsia (spanish moss) by not watering them enough :( thankfully it still looks good even dried out ! Yours look so healthy and beautiful

warning to people, especially in the united states: chlorinated tap water is not so great for these plants. please let water sit for a bit or use rain, filtered, or distilled water for this to ensure long and happy lives
Whoaaa thats a good advice! Since they have so much surface area to take in water, this makes a lot of sense!

1:14 tillandsia albida, there is a 'giant/large' form too
When you water (soak) yours, do you use any kind of water treatment? Like you would use for aquarium water to remove the chlorine?????
