This is only the 2nd one-day album recorded at Abbey Road. The Beatles actually recorded their debut album at this studio in just one day! (Although they didn’t compose all the songs that day as well!😂)
Are we really only the second to do all the recording in one day? I guess I just would’ve assumed others would have taken the Beatle approach by now!

actually, the first Beatles album "Please, please me" was recorded at EMI studios, studio 2. At least according to Wikipedia during a quick fact search. I could see what it says on the album when I get home...
After seeing what a rough time Rob was having in the bts footage, it's incredibly cathartic to hear how well everything came together here.
I was thinking that this is depressing and its much more obvious that Rob wasn't doing well seeing this end result.
I think this is the first time the album hasn't had any obvious "mistakes" in it. Obviously the first 2 albums they hadn't perfected the strategy, and on the last 2 there was a small mistake at the end of Temporary and in the last chorus of Jangly Bones- I can't find a single wrong note in this whole album, that they made in one day, while jetlagged!! Rob should be extremely proud!!!
@@sebastiancooper7792 Yeah, totes agree! I assume the jetlag/overall tiredness was a huge impact on him as well. Dunno what his medical condition is, but I wish him all the best! The album came out good

Usually hit me so hard. I've been working a job with ruff hours and my creative outlets haven't been as fulling recently. Hearing that song, I just fully broke down and cried. I don't believe in the whole "this song was made for me thing," but this hit so close to home and was about so many emotions that I've been feeling that it might as well have been. Thank you Rob.

Completely disagree, idk why but i feel so much like what if😅😅 Rob and Andrew always seem to have an ace up their sleeve when trying to figure out an extra bit and I really feel sad about missing out on that

Andrew with his new life as father of 2 and his creativity going insane, and Rob who’s been struggling and even tho he felt discouraged and tired they pulled through and created this awesome album. It really hits the feels imo
Like, I definitely get the feeling that they have to add more, make it more interesting, but there are some things that are just best left as they are.
This is the most wholesome and musical bromance on TH-cam. Getting lots of Beatles vibes here, obviously, but Rob seemed to be channeling his inner Jeff Mangum on a few songs. Really inspiring stuff from you guys. Keep it coming❤❤

I know it well how, at our most tired or most worst, we think oh no, we cannot do the things that are the hardest we can do, which are surely the most impressive difficult things that matter the most, so, anything less is less. But. Sometimes you find the center does hold. The unique thing you built with so much time and effort has a core that matters more than its edges.
Congrats to another year, and continuing to grow and mature this project. It is good. Like, very really good. And it keeps getting better.

I understand Rob was jet lagged, tired and dealing with lingering illness of some sort but he was definitely being too hard on himself. Y'all killed it. This is a really great 20 minutes of music to come out of a cold 12 hours of work. Kudos to everyone involved. Great job.
I hope when he heard the final products he realized how good it is, he wrote some gems, specially with Usually

This album is very rich
Its a bit more like gourmet ravioli honestly. Not a lot of heavier songs on this album. Not saying its bad by the way.

@@CameronsMusic I disagree Across the Road is at the very least second. I'd put it first. I agree that GREG was of their best, but this album just sounds absolutely marvelous. The instruments. Wow. Honorable mention to the organ in the intro song. The tracks are almost all very solid. Plus, Dorian is probably my favorite all albums combined i think.
I think Pretty Raw would've been the perfect last song. It encapsulated the entire day a lot with Rob not being at his best but still pushing through and Andrew's writing spree. It's kind of weird to see a creator I've been following for so long not being able to be in his usual spirits. Best wishes for Rob, the community appreciates you. And hopefully after you get better you can look back on the raw stuff that came out of this time with a smile on your face.

I agree with you but I also appreciate it following the emotion of "Usually" and "Dorian". It gave you time to just reflect and work through your own emotions brought on by the previous 2 songs. As someone who related heavily with both, I really needed the emotional reset of "Pretty Raw".
I am glad they didn't end with this one tbh. They won the day, pushed through, so it's fitting to end with a win too. But I hear you.
Abby Rowed might be my favorite earworm of the last 10 years, and the fact that it exists because of restrictions on using the studio name just makes it that much better for me!
"Dorian" is an absolute masterpiece
Pretty raw feels so much more special as the immediate followup song to Dorian.
going up the Dorian scale is pretty clever, maybe he needs another daughter and call her Lydia for some future song :)
I felt some "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" vibes during the heavy sections in "Dorian". Love it!

It's so strange how I'm only 23, don't have kids and don't want any but yet, every song Andrew writes about his children hits a certain spot. Might just be how genuine and well written they are but I'm still surprised every year :')
I think there's something about writing a song on the spot that just brings out some of the most natural emotions.
The best love songs I've heard in last years were all Andrew's songs about his children. 'Miracle' bloody destroyed me mate, I had to go immediately and hug my dad. Most worth it 3 hour ride ever.

Yeah, thanks to media, most people mistake something so animal basic as wanting to .... with a sport. You're actually just trying to be parents, core biology, every time you want ... Fun fact, it's called Making for a reason. Of course, you still have to choose honor and respect.
Maybe it’s the studio, the gear. Or maybe it’s because these two geniuses have been doing this for some time now, but this years result is absolutely awesome.
The songwriting is so much better then everr and the sound is just rediculously good, especially considering the whole thing was written and recorded in ONE DAY. 🤯
seriously, the first time they did this every song was super goofy. this feels like a real album
I was so impressed by the still, quiet, and drawn out moments; they felt poignant. There was some great art in this one.

I'm so sad that he was feeling sick. Ever since Gourmet Ravioli came out in 2019 with "Do You Want To" as the closer, I've been hoping to hear him take the lead more often on these less silly songs. But it hasn't happened that much, neither on FOO nor on Sonic Boom. But I was really moved by "Usually", while not that much of a banger, I loved to hear such an earnest take from Rob, it sounds very real.

Oh my god, the way Rob mastered Dorian with Andrew's screams reverberating gives the song so much power, it's incredible
I don't know if it's spending all that time together making Sonic Boom, the fact that you were recording at Abbey Road studios, or a combination of both, but there's a noticeable bump in the level of polish on this entire album in comparison to previous First of October entries. Also not as many silly tracks - not a complaint! Truly great stuff, it's a joy to watch Andrew and Rob and their team work.

Hey Andrew! I love your videos and your music and I wanted you to know that First of October inspired my dad and I to write music together. So now we do a similar challenge each year, just 3 songs in 5 hours, but it's so fun and we wouldn't do it without you and Rob. So thank you for inspiring us and I look forward to October every year!

This album feels very mature. All of the albums have been so awesome but this one feels very raw and vulnerable. There’s a different vibe for sure and it gives me goosebumps honestly
Best yet. ‘Dorian’ is utterly outstanding. Rob cut through with some seriously beautiful work on ‘Usually’ and it feels like Andrew reached a new level. The fluidity of the writing and realisation of it is astonishing. Different Instruments bring different stuff out of you and this studio with its instruments certainly did that.
So happy the crew convinced them not to mess with "Pretty Raw". It's the song of the album. Every year it seems that Andrew writes the super emotional song that tugs at the heart strings, but Rob hit it out of the park without words. That said, Andrew definitely had some magic brewing this entire session. What a privilege to watch the whole process.

As you guys were writing Across The Road and you kept saying “This sounds so familiar” my perfect pitch was screaming “BECAUSE IT’S THE PROGRESSION FROM YOUR SONG FIRST OF OCTOBER” 😂😂 Can’t believe it’s already been a year, this album is absolutely magical and I can’t thank you both enough for coming together every year to give us something to look forward to. Fantastic job once again!

Oh my lord Pretty Raw is such an incredible song. It captures so many emotions and feelings and moods with just two instruments and it's truly an incredible piece of work. Probably my new favorite FOO song, if not one of my favorite songs as a whole.
I think my favorite FOO song from now on is Abby Rowed. It's just so catchy and well-written, and incredibly clever from the start.

"Usually" is some of Rob's best work in my mind, and to think it's among the first times in a while he's been able to write and record lately is astounding.
Despite the clear issues going on bts, this is hands down the best First of October album. I'm biased because I'm a Beatles nut and this is undeniably heavily inspired by them, but, if anything, it just means Rob and Andrew were pushed away of falling back on old habits/techniques. Whereas previous albums have veered almost totally into novelty, this one feels much more artistically driven and whole. Excellent work all.

Honestly, Usually is my favorite of Rob's work in First of October. Something about the honest lyrics, the singing, the jaunty but humble musical backing just... it clicks. It hits an emotional resonance I can't really pin down. Small, tired, but talented. And it immediately has become the background song to moments I've had before. I'm tired, gonna go get some sleep. Good work guys.
I don't know why, but when Andrew finds a way to incorporate 1st of October into the lyrics it always gives me goosebumps hahaha

I love how emotional and raw this year's album. I hope rob is okay and in good health soon. I know I don't know him personally but after watching him online for the past 10 years or so, it makes me sad to see him like this. I'm happy he has an outlet and hope for better days on the horizon.
I think what rob heard as wrong notes in pretty raw are what makes it so emotionally impactful. the dissonance is so poignant.

9:20 "Pretty Raw"
Is one of the only two songs that makes me feel a very specific emotion that I don't know how to describe with just a few words so here is what I think is the best way:
It's the end titles song to the episodes of the TV series that is my life
I love how much you both have this "figured out" to where all the tracks are fleshed out songs, but keep it fresh to make each album its own thing.
I just think you needed to have Engineer Rob crossing the road with you, it feels like he's in the band too (and the mixes are great).
Something about this year’s album feels so genuine and special. Definitely my favorite so far!
Pretty raw is an interlude that soothes my soul in a way words just don’t have the capacity to. I’ve always had a soft spot for interludes- I’ve always been a person in limbo, a person of the inbetweens. The gorgeous, fragile guitarlele with the strong base piano notes to support it- It’s something else man
The pre-chorus of 'Dorian' gives me mad Beatles vibes. But 'Pretty Raw' takes me to a whole other midwestern world. Such great songs! I'd say the album summed up into 3 words would obviously be short, but sweet.
I just put out this animated story in my channel that I worked very hard on, but it somehow was my worst performing video. Effort never equates to success, so you can't ever take those things too hard. But due to several reasons, I thought it was going to perform at least moderately well. Kinda broke my heart. But the cheerfulness in "Abby Rowed" and "It's good to back" and the relatability of "usually" kinda really lifted my spirits. Just reminded me to take joy in the work itself rather than the result. Thank you guys for keeping my favorite one-day band alive! Been there since the start and am looking forward to many more days with y'all!

I hope Rob will get through whatever medical condition he is having. I have to admit that this year’s album feels different because Rob was feeling unwell at the time of the recording, even though the album still came out great in the end.
However, part of the reason why the album also feels different to me is because it seemed that for most of the part, Rob and Andrew wrote their songs separately. I truly miss the feeling of the first album when both of these guys would try to come up with song ideas together at the same spot, bantering crazy ideas left and right.
I’m not sure if the reason they wrote songs separately was due to the time efficiency, or due to Rob’s feeling unwell. If it was the later, it is 100% understandable. However, if the reason was time efficiency, I believe that it didn’t have to be that way.
Again, First of October in my mind is always a duo-thing, two friends making crazy, cool, or beautiful songs from meshing together their ideas into one giant mix. I hope in the future, I’d be able to see that kind of First of October again.
I know I might sound like someone dumping on their project this year, but that is far from the truth. I still think that this year’s album is great from technical and production point of view, but I’m missing that colorfulness that is unique to the First of October albums. Maybe because Rob was feeling unwell, so I heard less of his touches and nuances on the album? Idk. I’m saying this because I love First of October and hope everything is okay with all of the crew members.
Once again, I hope Rob will get better soon and overcomes this challenge for him. Still, thank you for bringing us another awesome 1-day album! ❤
Dude i thought that I was the only one that felt the same, they 100% did this album differently this time, when watching the behind the scenes I was like "did they have a fight or something?" But then Rob hit us with the medical thing and suddenly the album feels more emotional
Unbelievable work. I'm so glad you all helped Rob push through when he was feeling down (and speaking as someone who's battled health issues, I know how that can feel). This is a wonderful album and another amazing accomplishment!

it's breaking my heart to know that Rob is going through a real hard time. I hope he understands how genuinely incredible he is. Sunlight sunlight, the track he dismissed at first is genuinely one of my favourite songs on this album! The part that heals me about this is seeing and knowing that he's surrounded by caring and supportive friends like you, Andrew, and all the crew for this project.
Love everything you guys do, and hope Rob is doing okay and wish him well!
God, Rob's song Usually guts me. It's so relatable for so many of us, I'm sure. I don't know what he has going on with his health situation, but I wish the best for him. I noticed he hasn't been as active on TH-cam this past year. I have my suspicions as to what is going on, and I want to help, but I wouldn't know how or if my idea of helping is even right.
YES! I am so happy you guys used a Mellotron! Ever since I learned about them, I've been incredibly interested in the instrument. This year's album was awesome! You both did really good work.
Fun fact: The Mellotron was introduced to the Beatles by Mike Pinder, a member of the Moody Blues and a former employee in a Mellotron factory. Mike Pinder didn't have enough money to give the band a Mellotron at the time, but somebody close to the Beatles had one shipped to al four members. I thought that was cool.
The vocals on Dorian are insanely powerful. Awesome work guys. I can't believe that you've created this beautiful album in just 12 hours. Mad respect! Peace and love
Pretty Raw is the most beautiful song ever. You can really hear the conversation between Rob and Andrew as Rob is working through so many things and Andrew is there to bouy him up. I could listen to it a million times.
Great performance once again. The track that has the most Abbey Road sound that could have been on a beatles album is DORIAN. There is so much of the Lennon&McCartny feel about it and the engineering and production is so reminiscent of way the track is created. Excellent both lyricaly and musically looking forward to 2024. Stay safe J.
On Magic you've somehow ended up acquiring the first line from Toto - Africa, and it thoroughly breaks my brain.
Also Dorian is so utterly intense for a song based on such a tender emotion I love it
Absolutely amazing as always. Given everything you all had to deal with, jet lag, Rob not feeling well, waiting for the mellotron, needing time to change over sessions, dealing with an unfamiliar studio, you made something incredibly special. I know it would take forever, but if you ever got this pressed on wax, I would pre-order it in a heart beat. Love you all, thanks for continuing to make music for us.

I know you wrote Dorian for your kid, but right after Usually, it feels like the song is what you feel about Rob, ya know. And then you get the Pretty Raw interlude.... and I literally cried during Magic. You guys are just so awesome, and this is yet another wonderful album =) Abby Rowed is such a bop, it's my favorite !

As a Beatles fan, Abby Rowed and Dorain has to be my favorite out of all the songs on the album. Abbey Rowed literally reminds me so much of I’ve Just Seen a Face while Dorian gives me like Sexy Sadie and I Want You (She’s So Heavy) vibes at the same time

i forgot how good rob and andrews voices sound together. i think next year you guys should do an 8 song album, but make them like longer more complexly structured songs with more parts

Magic is the slappiest slap that ever slapped.
Usually is genuinely one of the most heart felt songs I've heard in a minute. You can see in Rob's eyes how whatever he's going through is affecting him and this song is just a perfect vessel to try and explain the frustration that comes with pain.
I mean guys... I've been watching both of your channels since like Rain cover done with face, and I've been an avid fan. Ever since the Ten Hours I've been pretty emotional about this project. But this year is something else. I honestly don't know what is it about it. Is it the studio, the equipment, the Rob's sincerity or Andrew's energy... This time it perfectly hits all the right spots. It punctures but somehow so softly and delicately. Thank you with all my heart.
There is something magical about those songs and they are different than your sound till now. You sound so authentic and unpretentious. The music flows more natural and still it feels technically superior. Really great stuff!
Dorian is genuinely one of the best songs ive ever heard you write. Truly beautiful things come from the pressures of time constraints sometimes

Dorian you sounded like Crowded House and magic could of been an ELO track. Must be an absolute dream being let loose in there. You really tuned in with this studios past. So much heart well done. Just occurred to me I just listened to an entire album. been along time.
This is my favorite project out. Every October I get the silliest grin on my face watching the beauty extracted from the chaos of the day. There are so many Easter eggs and little tidbits that come from the whole team getting their fingerprints on the album.
I think the best pieces are the most heartfelt ones, Rob's raw and somber songs and Andrew singing out loud his love for his children. It's a moment in time and a great one. Best wishes to Rob as well!
Lyrically and emotionally you two just got serious. There is a reality in this album honed from the truths of having grown up and now facing life in its fullness and richness.

This might not go down as the most popular First of October album, but these people have built an incredible project that continues to get better and better.
Rob and Andrew have such infectious creativity that's so enjoyable to watch. It's nothing but harmony and chaos when these two have to finish 10 SONGS in 12 HOURS. I think it's easy to forget that everything they record is done in just a couple of takes AT MOST. Through jetlag and loss of voice, their pure creativity is put on display for millions of people to love and be inspired by.
Plus, both of the videos this year were shot and edited extremely well. I felt like we had a more complete, chronological view of the whole process and you can tell that these people have been doing this project for a years now.
AND, those few years brought them to the legendary Abbey Road to record on the best equipment I've ever seen!
I just hope they keep making these. every year. forever... 🙂

Dorian is so “She’s so heavy” feeling and that’s super appropriate
