I liked the theory, that the spirit of the great dragon went into mulan, while she sat with him. You see his image and reflections in the sequence that followed. So when mushu tried to wake the dragon, it was just a stone statue, because the spirit of the dragon fused with mulan.

    • @DeianJones94

That's a cool theory, but it does slightly take away that Mulan would be capable of going on that journey to find her place on her own, which is something I've interpreted as one of the key points of the story, that SHE finds her place despite everything going against her.

One of my favorite things about this movie is how, when the army sees the destruction of the huns (abruptly ending the "Girl Worth Fighting For" song), there are no more musical numbers after that. The movie feels all fun and bright, with the thought of war kind of being in the background. That scene happens, and the characters and viewers are slapped in the face with some reality and, from then on, they...get down to business. XD

    • @canman87
      @canman87 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

That's a great point that I hadn't really ever considered. There's also the duality of that song's refrain "A girl worth fighting for", where not only could they be referring to a partner back home, but also the little girl in the village whose doll gave the Huns the clues that led to the village's ultimate destruction. To not only fight for the honor of loved ones back home, but to protect the innocent.

Mulan is the perfect example of a strong female lead character who people can get behind and support. She earned what she was. Flawed, imperfect, but stood for what she believed in and in service to her family. She wasnt a perfect character just cuz she was a woman and had no struggles.

I have always said Shan-Yu is the best Disney villain.
His motives are simple. They are exactly the same as Ursula's from The Little Mermaid. "Oh, you don't want me in your little kingdom? Okay. I'm gonna regret that decision."
He doesn't talk too much. You don't have to worry about him monologuing.
The man didn't pull some underhanded tactics like Ursula did. He built an army and came on full force. When he stormed the Great Wall he gave them a moment to set the signal, so all of China would be able to put up their best defence. He didn't want to face them while they were unprepared. He wanted a show of force. "Perfect. 😈"
Also of note. He RESPECTS his men. Something you don't see in any other Disney Villain in my memory. When the falcon brings the doll to them, he tosses it to his men, because he knows they are smart enough to piece things together without him spelling it out to them. And when the majority of his men die in the avalanche, man is rightfully pissed.
And that leads us to the final showdown, and my final point. When Mulan reveals herself as, "The soldier from the mountains," that killed his men. In a society that would have killed her simply for posing as a male to save her father... Does he make a single remark about her being a woman, try to make her feel insignificant? Nah. Dude marks her as his primary enemy, and gives her the fight she deserves.
The man is THE Ultimate Disney Villain. And more people need to give the man his due.

Some backstory to mulan. Most militia in china in this era were just farmers. They have their own arms and were expected to fight for their country but have no formal training (generally). In larger families, they have enough funds to train males to wield a weapon and horse riding. As for mulan going in place of her father, I've heard they keep records based on the head of family rather than individuals. Not sure on that though.

@@mels607 That's a good question. I feel like I've heard examples given, but they're not things I watch. Or they could be misinterpreted. Like "Let it Go", in Frozen, I think feels to me like it's meant to be a villain song. She basically says she's pleased to use her power now, even though she clearly hurt people, and could be seen as adding that she's going to avoid people because they suck basically. And yet she's not a villain and the feeling many have is that it's a celebratory song or even a Gay Liberation Anthem. (Read on)
However the movie as a whole I think is not saying Elsa even means "It's liberating to say 'screw you guys I'm going to create my own better reality' hurray for me!" I think it's maybe more like "Me and Society don't work well together, so it's maybe good for us to break-up." And by the end the movie mostly says the song was wrong anyway. That Elsa does have responsibilities to other people and not just to her own desires.
Or WandaVision. Many felt it said that Wanda was a hero of the series. But the only character who said that, Rambeau, was dealing with her own grief and maybe over-identifying with Wanda. (I do fault the show, though I liked it, for not making it a bit clearer that Rambeau's speech is her own views and probably not that valid.) Wanda at the end is more a troubled woman who shouldn't be condemned, as the series is unclear how competent or intentional she was in her actions plus she shows an ability to reform, but certainly not praised either. And at the end of the series she's a fugitive. She is maybe not directly "punished", in the series, but really how would one punish someone with her powers?
Still I could maybe understand why someone could come away from these two projects thinking
Frozen says men are awful and women are better off fleeing from men to pursue their own self-actualization. (It's not saying that, but "Let it Go" being so popular and the one male love-interest making an abrupt villain-turn may explain it.)
WandaVision says morality does not apply to traumatized women who can basically torture whoever they want, even other women, so long as they stop before it gets too bad and it was therapeutic for them in the moment. (I don't think it says that, though I do think it's maybe less clear on what it's saying than Frozen.)

It's funny that if you showed someone who was educated in China this movie they will laugh at the hair cutting scene. Since about 1000BC no one in China was meant to cut their hair as your body was seen to be given to you by your ancestors and it was taboo to hair your hair. For men it expected to keep your long hair neat by tying it up in a bun at the top. For women there was more variety throughout the dynasties, so ironically, there was more of a chance women would cut their hair compared to men. This tradition ended in the 1600s with the Qing Dynasty as the Manchus invaded China. Their traditional hair style for men was a shaved top and a long queue at the back. In order to maintain control over the lands, they mandated that all Chinese donned this hairstyle, or face execution. Many actually resisted at the cost of their lives due to tradition.

One of those movies were was around when the marketing was in full gear, saw it in theaters, got the Happy Toys (they were character spinning tops, which i never got to work) owned the VHS when it was new, had the soundtrack (True to your heart by 98 degrees and Stevie Wonder is hits) and it's the movie that got me to pay attention to the previews more, and music videos (because Inspector Gadget was around that time too, and did the same thing for it).

Interesting fact: Ming-Na Wen does the speaking voice and Lea Salonga does the singing for Mulan. They shared one other role: Ming-Na played Lien Hughes in the daytime soap opera As The World Turns from 1988-1991, then the character was written off. When the show brought the character back in 2001, Lea played the part. (By that time Ming-Na was a regular on ER.)

yep, mulan has always been one of my favorite disney princesses. i think it's notable that she is even considered a disney princess at all, because she wasn't one to start out and doesn't marry a prince, so she never becomes one either. but she is an official disney princess. she's just too badass not to be allowed that title. also even though romance was definitely not the focus of the movie (something i really appreciate as someone who dislikes romance and the genre in general) she is still a great example of a strong female character who shows that women can still be strong AND have romance, the two are not mutually exclusive and romance isn't a lack of strength (which is often the first thing some people will take away from a female character's story if they're trying to portray them as strong/independent).

I absolutely love Mulan, she is the type of "strong woman" that we want to see more often. This came from a time when "girl power" wasn't all up in your face and putting the other gender down just to prop the woman up, it handled itself with dignity and respect, which is practically non-existent nowadays. Her true power came out when she embraced her femininity, instead of saturating herself in masculine stereotypes to appear strong, modern stuff needs to take a lot of notes from this movie.
