Auschwitz 75: Listeners brand this the "greatest ever" James O'Brien call

  • This Jewish survivor's story left James O'Brien lost for words - watch the call listeners have said was the greatest he'd ever taken.
    Lily from Kensington is a survivor as she and her mother were saved during the German occupation of Poland by a German civil servant. Her and her mother were the only survivors of her family as sadly she had lost her brother and her father.
    Lily shared how she managed to escape from the ghetto at 11 years old to prevent her mother having to return after a day of slave labour; in mid November in thick snow Lily was wearing a cardigan, pyjamas and slippers, and the female civil servant at her mother's work took pity on them both and took them in.
    A Greek Catholic archbishop then hid the pair in the convent and throughout the war was responsible for saving the lives of 150 Jewish orphans.
    She told James she wanted to honour the "extraordinary ordinary people" that helped to save lives such as "giving a tiny piece of bread to a child."
    "People like that should be glorified but there is no such medal...these people deserve everything," Lily said, however those people do not want praise and "fought with their heart."

    As a German i only can say that we never should forget, even if in a few years all witness are gone, we always need to make sure that this never will happen again!!!

    • @noelpucarua2843
      @noelpucarua2843 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      You have no need to feel guilty. As a German you are in a strong position to counteract the influence of those who wish to turn people away from this history and to help people to know the truth and to act on it. I know you may feel the guilt but try to turn it into strength to reach out to people.

    • @holygroove2
      @holygroove2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not a political ideology, it's a spiritual condition. Alot of it is on the right, but it can be on the left as well. I agree with the previous comment. Take whatever guilt you feel and allow it to motivate you to do what is right. Reach out to people.

    • @burstcity3832

    • @holygroove2
      @holygroove2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@burstcity3832 again, most of it is on the right. The sides are not equivalent by any means. Fascism and Nationalism comes from the right. Social consciousness and PC culture (wokeness) is from the left. Similar tactics, completely different outcomes and end games in my view.

    • @burstcity3832
      @burstcity3832 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@holygroove2 I get that, but the woke brigade are starting to play very strong identity politics and punishing people from what they consider the same group as a person who offended them without even listening. Some of them are also becomming very militant in their calls to silence groups of people ideologically opposed to them, they want whole groups silenced and removed and that is getting close to the basis of fascism.
      I understand the original direction of political travel that fascism came from and where the woke culture came from but I can see similarities in the objectives of both sides while they are operating in their own echo chambers and pushing themselves to the farthest extremes in a pious attempt to gain power for themselves. I also see a lot of the selfie culture of putting yourself in shot at all times playing into the sides.

      Scott Stir well, I think anyone who lived through what she did (the fear alone would be unimaginable,) who chooses to live in appreciation of those who helped her by putting themselves in grave danger, who dedicates her time to teaching young people about the helpers, is inspiring. She isn’t speaking of her victim hood but of the beauty of the human spirit and how one person can be a helper and make a difference. Beyond this, what is intimated is that love supersedes hate.
      I am glad that you commented. I wonder are some people morally superior to others and if so, maybe she is, so then she wouldn’t be a sanctimonious person, right? My grandmother was a concentration camp survivor. She lost her parents and most of her siblings. I feel privileged to have known her and honoured to share her bloodline. One day I really must write down everything she told me, so many people and their stories are lost to history. This lady reminds me of the way my grandmother spoke. I kick myself with how bored I got listening to her sometimes as it was the only thing she really spoke about but that was when I was younger and never thought I'd ever lose her. When I grew up, I took in everything she told me, I just wish I had the brains to record her.

It will be valuable for the whole world. It is so important to have these oral records. Don't kick yourself for what you didn't do, make up for it by recording your memories now. One day, there will be people who will be so glad that you did.

    I'm a canadian that discovered James when his responses to Meghan Markle showed up in my suggested videos. I instantly loved his open-mindedness on issues, and his ability to challenge callers on their unwavering beliefs that are presumably not based on their broader knowledge of issues. Indeed this clip was quite beautiful - both the caller's ability to focus on telling the stories of ''the helpers'' and James response to her stories

    First of all, this was a great call very powerful and heartbreaking and second I noticed a lot of people angry with James and every video gets a decent amount of views and it's full of people saying how much they dislike James, why watch something or listen something that makes you mad?, it's like intentionally abusing yourself.

    • @craigfarley1191
      @craigfarley1191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First of all I'm a huge fan of James. Listening to someone you disagree with is very beneficial to ones enlightenment. If you listen only to those who echo your opinion, you will become more radicalised in your beliefs. I listen to Nick Ferrari every week day, not because I like him, in fact I disagree with almost all of his points. However, it is important to see the opposite side of the story to form a full and thoughtful opinion. There have been occasions when Nick has changed my mind on a topic.
