Stroke of genius, honestly. Thor did every single one of the atrocities he was credited in the first game. But instead of being a coward who tries to excuse himself or a psychopath who revels in his actions (though he pretends to be), he knows exactly what evil he's done and makes no attempt at justification. Consequently, he's depressed and self-loathing as all Hel and turns to alcohol as a coping mechanism because he can't stand himself. He's ungroomed, overweight, not taking care of himself. Can't even summon the enthusiasm to heal the wound in his side, which no doubt pains him. A hollowed out wreck of a man. And it all comes back to the All-Father. Odin abused and manipulated and exploited his son for centuries until Thor no longer believed he could be anything more than a destroyer because that's the only thing his father wanted out of him. Thor loves his family. He hates that he wiped out the giants. He blames himself for what happened to his sons. And the only escape from his screwed-up head is at the bottom of a tankard of mead, which only works briefly in exchange for making things worse in the long run. Odin truly is the biggest monster of the series. Everything wrong about the Norse realms goes back to him, from his damaged family to the destruction of entire realms. Even Zeus had the excuse of being possessed by a demon of fear that clouded his judgement. Odin is of sound mind and still acts the way he does. He's despicable.
You say Zeus was possessed by fear, but that only happened when Kratos popped open that fresh box. Before then, Zeus had all the atrocities credited to him in various tales (mostly all the rape), and that was before Kratos was even born most likely. everyone is talking about how funny this scene is but 9:20 to the end almost made me tear up and it didn't even hit close to home for me, just super powerful
Yeah, and it makes the ending of Thor's story all the more touching and hearbreaking. Because in the end, Kratos, Thrud, Sig, and Atreus actually got through to him, and Thor had that life-changing realization/lesson that he took to heart. That for all of his guilt, self-loathing, lack of self-esteem, and inability to see how he could change, he accepted and agreed with Kratos' argument that it didn't matter--that they could still CHOOSE to be better, no matter how hard it is, even if they stumble and falter multiple times. That they MUST be better, for the sake of their family and children, because even if they have no hope in themselves, they HAVE to do better for the ones they love. And then Odin kills him without hesitation just because Thor, defeated, refuses to continue fighting to die a pointless death. And Thor's last act is to reach out to his daughter, unable to say anything due to the spear jutting through his throat, but the gesture alone speaks volumes. His final thoughts and actions are ones of love--he loves his daughter, and he wants to be there for her. He thinks nothing of his father's betrayal, he feels no anger or rage at it, just concern and love for his daughter. And it says so much that Kratos, Atreus, Freya, and Mimir are the ones utterly outraged and distraught at Thor's murder. Thor was another person they wanted to save from Odin, and they HAD, only for Odin to pointlessly snatch that away at the last moment. But Thor died redeemed, proving that he was resolutely deciding to change, proving that he cared more about love than about pride, or rage, or ego, even in his last moments.
Yes , addiction in the family is messed up .At least I never had a father who turned to liquor to dull the pain , shame and guilt of having commited Murder , Cruelty and Genocide and having repeated the cycle of parental abuse that lead my older brothers to a path of death .

@@Trigger0221 it can be heavy when the user demands it to be. If not, it can still be heavy, as well as light. Basically a Schrodinger mass. It is light, but also heavy.
These kind of tavern fights are one of the most enjoyable things in any media depicting ancient warriors like vikings, period. The background themes make them even better.
Bruh this felt too fucking close to home. Had a girl friend in highschool whose father were exactly this; He's a proficient math teacher but a fuckin drunkard, also minus all the mighty hammer, muscles and height. Her daughter was my classmate. She had to endure all the question of why his dad fucked up so much. Strong girl. Last i heard her parent split and she lived with her fiancee. The toxic family relationship were very good in the norse saga of GoW. I loved it.
Something I really have to admire about games like this is how a simple moment of trying to get a drunk, abusive father back on the job, and it turns into an emotional battle of wills, and clearly an epic moment of pure action in a tavern. You gotta love narrative games, because they really capture the subtle and obvious nuances of storytelling. The fact that Thor isn't some lunatic who enjoys being a monster, but is instead a self-abusive drunk who hates himself to the point that he can't see himself as anything other than a destroyer, and so therefore, there's nothing else to live for other than drowning his sorrow in a few hundred cups of mead. Granted he really does love Thrud and Sif, but that doesn't change the fact that his sons are dead, and he's the one responsible for their deaths. He may not have been the one to deal the killing blows, but he is the one who sent them with Baldur under Odin's orders to find Faye and learn about the path to Jotunheim. And when Modi came back without Magni, how does Thor respond? By beating his son within an inch of his life and sent him back to die at the hands of Kratos and Atreus.
@@066kshitizvsingh4 Correct, only the Einherjar that within the walls of Valhalla will fight during Ragnarok. Folkvangr get the other half of the fallen warriors, though it is never stated what their purpose will be.
There had to be someone on the God of War team with an alcoholic relative, they really hit it on the head with the dialogue and the emotions. The mannerisms even.
The presentation of Thor's drinking is surprisingly... modern? At least when it comes to how it affects those who love him. He's guilty about it too, like it's keeping him prisoner, the way it does for alcoholics. Very interesting angle to take, love it. It would've been easy to just go "hur dur lots of drinking is manly as fuck".
The amount of work put in this game is incredible...Just look at how many things are happening in this very scene... the amount of motion capture, acting, directing, camera work, sound mixing... just unbelievable. Nobody does it like Sony 1st party man...
It's the subtle things that get me when i rewatch this stuff. Thor pointing at atreus to divert blame, yelling "YEAH" when thrud tackles the dude, mjolnir and ingrid clashing, etc
7:03 Me after sending my Master's thesis in German to the department of my faculty after five months of work the day before yesterday. I didn't faint, but I could barely leave the bed after 900 hours spent working on that damn thing.
10:18 "can I get you a water or something" I swear they based this entire sequence off of my last night out on the town, complete with the deadbeat alcoholic dad subplot
People find this funny, me too, but beside that, this is a pretty personal sad scene and i'm pretty sure i wasn't the only one. This scene, specially the one after the fight, hits hard when you have gone through that situation because of depressed alcohol addicted father who is falling again and again in his addictions no matter how hard you try to make him understand thats not the only way
4:33 is genuinely kind of heartbreaking. Thor says "thinking too much" because Odin constantly tells Thor that he's not good for thinking-that thinking isn't what Odin needs him around for. All of his insecurities are out on the table when he's drunk and almost all of them can be traced back to Odin.

Yes , addiction in the family is messed up .At least I never had a father who turned to liquor to dull the pain , shame and guilt of having commited Murder , Cruelty and Genocide and having repeated the cycle of parental abuse that lead my older brothers to a path of death .
honestly wasn't expecting Thor to act like my real life alcoholic father. Wasn't expecting a butcher god to be so close to home
Yep....
As someone who still struggles with alcohol problems I saw myself in this scene. I'm sorry
@@KryptekBrit hey man you're not the only one.
@@KryptekBrit damn, me too...
Same even had to come get my dad as a teen from the bar like she does here. No kid should see their parents in such a state
7:00 got my laughing ass off the chair 🤣🤣🤣
Being able to play as Atreus is a great move on the developers part y'know
Maybe, in the future, Atreus will be the protagonist of his own game or of a God of War spinoff
@@vbooks9708 Atrues becoming the God of War would be neet to see
@@REDtheblazian wouldn't make sense, besides knowing that everything he did in the game is lie, being the god of mischief would probably fit.
His parts are also the weakest in the game though. Ironwood was a massive waste of time in terms of actual substance and helheim was also very slow considering his combat is repetitive af
@@ssk58607 I ain’t going lie, I wanna do another play through of this game but I’ll if I have to go through ironwood again, that part definitely overstayed it’s welcome
Kratos be the only one aloud to call him BOY!

He will get a thrashing for that later.
Brok used to call him that too

Atreus asking how they are still conscious is hilarious to me

*"Goodnight girl, I see ya tomorrow."*
Too funny
@5:56 Mjolnir and the sword fight was hilarious
That shit is epic
Goddamn Thor is hilarious when drunk
Edit: I CANT, FUCKIN "What have you started?! put down the--" *thor fucking thuds ont othe ground*
Wonder how much the “fat dobber” weighs hahaha
This segments feels so whimsical somehow and I love it. It doesn't feel like GOW but damn does it feel fun.

"We're here for you. Even when you're... here."
What a line.
What does that mean? I don't get it
Thor falling down on the ground while still drinking was the most funniest thing in this game 😂
Funnier than when brok said fcuk knuckles? Lol
Everyone who has read the myths knows, drunk Thor is always fun. And it isn't a Viking banquet without a proper brawl at the tavern.
Also nice to see Atreus show some classic traits of Young Kratos
Lmao fr seeing the boy throw some haymakers brings a tear to my eye
Kratos and all GOW fans: *Sheds tears* We're so proud of you, boi.
Well
Gow is highly inaccurate.

@@cringekiller348 I mean yeah, some inaccuraices will be there since creative liberty exists. But how it is adapted beautifully matters.
Weapons are not allowed but I guess trying to take Mjölnir from Thor wouldn’t end well for the guard.
Basically he's the king of Asgard after Odin so the rules don't really apply on him
I don’t even think they can lift it the mjolnir so heavy I remember thor needing a powerbelt, bracelet and rings to wield it
@@colyph676 how heavy is it? Shouldn't the table break if Thor put Mjolnir on the table?

Attention to details at its finest👌
I did
The cut scenes , combat , comedy , music and astec of Krastos’s son and Thor’s Daughter and Thor himself all fighting together really is a masterpiece
2:56 - 7:00
All I can think of when I witness this Bar Fight is how well Free Bird could easily fit in this situation
Damn, now I can’t unhear it.
I want to see an edit of this whole scene with it in there 😂
I find it awesome that atreus's sword was fighting thor's hammer in the air
I loved it.
Oh I see, so the Aesir family reminded you of an actual thing that was nearly identical.
"Boy... That escalated quickly. I mean that really got out of hand fast."
Everyone fighting with bare hands and Thor trowing mjolnir lol
In the end thor is still just a father trying his best.
If his sons had problems, so does he
Something I really have to admire about games like this is how a simple moment of trying to get a drunk, abusive father back on the job, and it turns into an emotional battle of wills, and clearly an epic moment of pure action in a tavern.
“I said quiet BOY!”
“MY NAME IS”
After years of “boi” from his dad, the last thing he needed was another man calling him boy
Love how Atreus gets called a "breast fed baby." When he tries to get by that dude 😆
What did the guy say after artreus gets launched up stairs?
It will take more than that
So a milk drinker.
THE AMOUNT OF EMOTIONS ON THRUDD'S FACE!!! OMG!!! I CAN'T!!!! THIS IS A FREAKIN' GAME AND LOOK AT HER OMG!
This is the most realistic depiction of being drunk and a father.
5:58 Lmao at Mjolnir and Ingrid just having a random fight
The Einherjar are warriors who answered Valkyrie's Calls. They live in Folkvangr and became Odin's personal army in preparation of Ragnarok.
don't half the einherjar live in Valhalla. Folkvangr has their own half.
@@066kshitizvsingh4 Correct, only the Einherjar that within the walls of Valhalla will fight during Ragnarok. Folkvangr get the other half of the fallen warriors, though it is never stated what their purpose will be.
No, half of them live in Folkvangr, the other half live in Valhalla
There had to be someone on the God of War team with an alcoholic relative, they really hit it on the head with the dialogue and the emotions. The mannerisms even.
The presentation of Thor's drinking is surprisingly... modern? At least when it comes to how it affects those who love him. He's guilty about it too, like it's keeping him prisoner, the way it does for alcoholics. Very interesting angle to take, love it. It would've been easy to just go "hur dur lots of drinking is manly as fuck".
Atreus in his first bar fight, man they grow up so fast
The amount of work put in this game is incredible...Just look at how many things are happening in this very scene... the amount of motion capture, acting, directing, camera work, sound mixing... just unbelievable. Nobody does it like Sony 1st party man...
“weapons are not allowed inside”
thor: fuck that!!!!
5:18
That is such a Kratos moment here!
The funny thing is thor was a drunker and that's why he has big belly 😂
That's not a funny thing, that's a fact!
Theories also acknowledge that the fatter you are the quicker you get drunk
It's the subtle things that get me when i rewatch this stuff. Thor pointing at atreus to divert blame, yelling "YEAH" when thrud tackles the dude, mjolnir and ingrid clashing, etc
7:03 Me after sending my Master's thesis in German to the department of my faculty after five months of work the day before yesterday. I didn't faint, but I could barely leave the bed after 900 hours spent working on that damn thing.
Atreus's combat is soo good 🍻🍻
When he’s not using arrows.
Fr
loved this part, had me laughing and smiling the entire time.
"Thinking too muuuch" 😂 😂
Damn I really like Thor in this game
I am very happy to know Atreus is playable now. I felt like he should have been in the first game, but he was fine being an assist.
when thrud is charging that guy at 3:30 and thor is just like YEAHHHH funny af XD
Such a good interpretation: Thor as a broken man whose only ever been valued for his ability to be violent and drink.
8:55 damn that lil girl surely do got Godly strength in her..
Congratulations to Santa Monica Studio, they really managed to capture the "alcoholic father" character
I’d love to see Kratos go into an Asgardian pub lmao
He'd have to pay for the roof damage
Lennayyy
So damn excited to play this at midnight!!
Yeah I can't wait to play your copy either.
this is fantasy pub fight I kinda yearn for in RPG, looks so fun 😂
The way Thor says "Thinking to muchh" its funny 🤣🤣🤣

Making kratos proud by going zeus beatdown on that guy
10:05 They know how to regain the mood, you just know by the sound Mjölnir took as always the direct way 😂
6:10 I love how the hammer and sword are also going at it lmao
Teen Atreus first bar fight with Thor and his daughter. Kratos couldn't been more proud
2:44 is no one going to talk about the balls Atreus has to yell at Thor! Especially when he’s drunk
