Hey Kurt great video as always! I really learned a lot from your videos lately. I’m thinking about taking acting classes. I’m still in college though. Do you suggest I take acting classes in college or outside of college?

If it is an interactive class and you are performing for the teacher and getting feedback from the teacher, then yes, you can put that on your resume. If it is an online course where you are just watching videos, then no, that doesn't go on the resume.
For tv shows, do casting directors favor certain talent agencies when casting for roles? Just wondering, my agent says they submit me through an email, and then says “let’s hope they reply.” Is this how it works? Or does the agent need to put in a little more effort for their clients to get an audition? I’m learning, this is new to me.

How do you use the 10 step audition cheat sheet on Co-Star role auditions? Especially the ones that are 1-3 lines that are super basic for someone who’s playing like a waiter or mechanic, the sides are just so weak and don’t give a lot to work with
Great question. For those very small roles, I focus on step 3 of the audition cheat sheet "Find the story objective". I make sure my performance is serving the story, not my ego. Those types of characters are often not supposed to stand out or be memorable in any way so it wouldn't make sense for me to make a unique or interesting choice. I may put myself into the shoes of the director and ask if I were directing this, how would I want the actor to play that character? Sometimes the answer is to play it very matter-of-fact with no emotion so that's what I'll do.
@@ActingCareerCenter if that is the case then do you have any tips on standing out on co star auditions? I would imagine for the simple one-two liners roles the variety of self tapes can’t be to drastic within the competition pool, at a certain point are they just looking for faces or is there something I can do to stand out to casting directors?
@@JaimeJoseHernandez You're right, for some of the smaller parts, there just isn't any room to do anything unique. Stand out by consistently showing up and doing great work over time.
Hey Kurt! Loved the video, how long do you think after taking your first acting class would it be till you should start looking for an agent? About 1 or 2 years? (Assuming you’re building experience while taking classes)
There's no one-size-fits-all answer for this. Some people may be ready earlier, others may take longer. It also depends on the market. Smaller market agents are more willing to take on newer actors. Large market agents will expect the actors to be much more polished (and LA agents will expect the actors to have a solid resume of work) I got my first agent in Ohio after one year of classes.
Kurt I have a meeting with an agent in just over 3 days. I still have to start writing my acting cv and I have only taken acting classes till now. What do I do? How do I build a strong cv? What do you recommend practicing for an agent meeting? Thank youu
You can't "build" a strong CV in 3 days. You build a strong CV over the course of your career. Whatever experience you have now is what you have. If all you have are classes, that's all you put on your CV. Don't make stuff up just to look better. If the agent is going to ask you to audition, then you should practice that audition. Practice on camera so you can watch it back and review it.
You don't submit an audition unless the casting director has requested you. Like I said in the video, the vast majority of auditions will be requested through a talent agent.
Been watching your videos nonstop for the past few days! Thanks so much for these videos Kurt. Quick question - with the pandemic changing how the industry is (more remote/virtual castings, self tapes, etc) how important is it that your agent be local to where you live? For example I'm in the VA/DC/MD area - am I limited to only local talent agencies? Thanks in advance!
Even with self tapes, getting representation in another market is still difficult, especially if we are talking about the major markets (NYC, Atlanta, Los Angeles). The reason is that the major markets already have a giant talent pool for agents and casting directors to choose from so they are less likely to need to look out of market to find what they need. In addition, casting someone from out of town poses a risk to production. Even if that person has every intention of travelling into town for bookings, there is still the possibility of a canceled flight or a highway detour that could derail those plans and force production to scramble. It's not impossible though. If you have a very competitive resume or an agency is specifically looking for your "type", they could overlook the distance and agree to represent you.

So basically when you are starting out and you want to audition it is almost certain that you will be going up against people that have a more admirable resume than you. Which leads me to the question how did you go up against experienced individuals did it seem like there was favouritism towards those people?
Well you should start with acting classes, at a GOOD school. Once you have THAT under you're belt then you'll have a greater advantage than a ton of actors out there that never trained. You just keep putting in the work; keep doing the footwork, you'll build up your experience and your resume and soon enough you'll be the one answering these kinds of questions because you've been though it.
