For me the best example of luck will always be Anna Paquinn. She went to an audition of her sister because she didn’t want to go to school. Casting directors asked her to also make an audition and she did it. Anna booked the role, she made the movie and on her first role ever she won an Oscar. She became part of the X-men, was really famous and all because she didn’t want to go to school.

Indeed luck really is where opportunity meets preparation. There’s also the luck of landing the audition in the first place; some actors in the UK have 6 auditions a year while some their fellow actors have 6 per day. Mark Ruffalo stated it took him over 600 auditions to make his break…I will be well over 100 years old at my current rate of auditions by the time I hit 600…lol…that said - stay frosty, keep on your game (read, stay fit, watch plays and films, allow yourself to be inspired, be open to new experiences), be thankful to be pursuing your dream (that’s a big dose of luck right there)…then good things can & will happen :-)

I don't see myself as being an actor or becoming an actor (screenwriting is my thing) but I have enjoyed watching these videos and learning about things from the actor's perspective. I thought this discussion of luck was quite interesting. One thing I thought might be something to mention is if an actor is somehow able to find out about a project ahead of time and the quality of the material it might factor into how much luck it takes to audition for something that might advance their career. In other words, if an actor knows about two shows and one of them seems more compelling to them, putting themselves into the place of the viewer, the more compelling one might have a better chance of putting them into a successful part that might last.

I was just walking down the street to the store the other day and thinking about this very same thing. Thinking that it's almost like playing the lottery except that you have to have some degree of skill (training etc) to even get a ticket to play in this lottery. It's really a game of skill AND luck. Kind of like playing Gin Rummy.

Kurt, This is one video everyone should watch with an open mind. Luck is very much a part of acting career. Sometimes even your best audition will not win you the part just because you may look different to what the director has envisioned. We have to learn to be a lot more dispassionate about the outcome, once we have done our best work and gave our everything to the audition. Great advise.
While I have you @kurt, hoping to get some career advise. I have been getting lots of "Featured Extras" kind of roles lately, and they pay decently and I sometimes even great screen time. However, these are almost all TVCs and not scripted shows or movies. A fellow actor whom I met on a set says I should not be doing those parts as they dilute my brand value. He says once a casting director sees you in those parts, they can't get past that and will never give you meatier parts. So I should say not to everything until I land the big one.
Being in IT and knowing the career progression for most fields, this advise seems very odd to me. I always felt I need to climb up the ladder by doing the hard grunt work on the lower rungs, and eventually I will get that "promotion" to the next level.
I am very conflicted about this because that guy seems to be doing alright and he only does major TVCs. If you can shed some light on this and tell us what you think ....that'd be awesome.

In other words, if you're determined to become a famous actor, you can be a workaholic and push yourself to the limit until you eventually hit the jackpot. It’s similar to the game industry: you can put everything into a project, not knowing if it’ll be the next Genshin Impact or crash and burn right after launch, possibly leading to layoffs. Yet, HR will often judge short tenures on a résumé. This is why I prefer an acting career. Yes, there will be disappointments, but it doesn’t carry the same career risks.

What about if you want to become an actor in Australia how much scope does Australia have in film and tv

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You live in Australia - do you SEE a lot of films being made there? Whatever you see with your own eyes - THAT'S the scope of filmmaking in Australia except for maybe students films. If there's a local college near you - find out if they have a film production class, if they do, find out where they get their actors.
Although you'd probably just be better off to find a school that has acting classes because the other students (and teacher) have probably already looked into that.
Find an acting school; train for two years then start doing theater is what I'd recommend. Maybe do some research on other actors that are from Australia. Isn't Milly Bobby Brown from Australia?

I don’t really know where to begin cause there’s nowhere I can go to start my career because I’m afraid to be judged by my family by not having a traditional job or a “ridiculous idea”. Pulled out of my ass:
Other than the basic, show up on time, get along with people, etc you have...
Know the right people which can be obtained over time in your career...
    Don't be obviously bad...
A lot has to do with luck. Most Actors/Actresses are just the same person in every movie/show they're in. It seems to have more to do with having the right look and speaking voice that people like.
You then have audition roulette luck and getting cast in something that is popular and people now like you because you were in that thing they liked.
I'd say being a successful actor is mostly luck with some genetic lottery mixed in with a dose of being a good employee and being out there to be seen.
It is probably like real estate, you have a lot of people try it and fail. You have a good amount try it and do enough to make a living and turn it into a career. You then have the tiny minority that makes a killing.

Hi Kurt 😊 firstly thank you for your insight to the acting world. Question, I’m currently working background for last few months but recently was selected to read a line with main characters. Would this mean the director selected me? Or was this luck? I’m very interested in knowing what or how they selected me. I’m also learning a lot on set ! Can this led to a bigger part?

@@MatthewG88 I am not giving up, I work every single day on my craft , in 2019 I did an audition for an Opera in Austria , and I got the job but I as a asylum seeker the government didn't allowed me to work so I lost that chance ,but didn't give up on my dreams and worked for some indie films , shows inside Austria but I left Austria and came in Germany now I did a self audition for a big budget Hollywood movie ... I can't mention the project or the director etc but it's a once in a life opportunity and I got the job now can't travel outside the country.... Because it's in another country....
