    For me the best example of luck will always be Anna Paquinn. She went to an audition of her sister because she didn’t want to go to school. Casting directors asked her to also make an audition and she did it. Anna booked the role, she made the movie and on her first role ever she won an Oscar. She became part of the X-men, was really famous and all because she didn’t want to go to school.

    Indeed luck really is where opportunity meets preparation. There’s also the luck of landing the audition in the first place; some actors in the UK have 6 auditions a year while some their fellow actors have 6 per day. Mark Ruffalo stated it took him over 600 auditions to make his break…I will be well over 100 years old at my current rate of auditions by the time I hit 600…lol…that said - stay frosty, keep on your game (read, stay fit, watch plays and films, allow yourself to be inspired, be open to new experiences), be thankful to be pursuing your dream (that’s a big dose of luck right there)…then good things can & will happen :-)

    I was just walking down the street to the store the other day and thinking about this very same thing. Thinking that it's almost like playing the lottery except that you have to have some degree of skill (training etc) to even get a ticket to play in this lottery. It's really a game of skill AND luck. Kind of like playing Gin Rummy.

    Kurt, This is one video everyone should watch with an open mind. Luck is very much a part of acting career. Sometimes even your best audition will not win you the part just because you may look different to what the director has envisioned. We have to learn to be a lot more dispassionate about the outcome, once we have done our best work and gave our everything to the audition. Great advise.
    While I have you @kurt, hoping to get some career advise. I have been getting lots of "Featured Extras" kind of roles lately, and they pay decently and I sometimes even great screen time. However, these are almost all TVCs and not scripted shows or movies. A fellow actor whom I met on a set says I should not be doing those parts as they dilute my brand value. He says once a casting director sees you in those parts, they can't get past that and will never give you meatier parts. So I should say not to everything until I land the big one.
    Being in IT and knowing the career progression for most fields, this advise seems very odd to me. I always felt I need to climb up the ladder by doing the hard grunt work on the lower rungs, and eventually I will get that "promotion" to the next level.
    I am very conflicted about this because that guy seems to be doing alright and he only does major TVCs. If you can shed some light on this and tell us what you think ....that'd be awesome.

I don’t really know where to begin cause there’s nowhere I can go to start my career because I’m afraid to be judged by my family by not having a traditional job or a “ridiculous idea”. I don't see myself as being an actor or becoming an actor (screenwriting is my thing) but I have enjoyed watching these videos and learning about things from the actor's perspective. I thought this discussion of luck was quite interesting. One thing I thought might be something to mention is if an actor is somehow able to find out about a project ahead of time and the quality of the material it might factor into how much luck it takes to audition for something that might advance their career. In other words, if an actor knows about two shows and one of them seems more compelling to them, putting themselves into the place of the viewer, the more compelling one might have a better chance of putting them into a successful part that might last.

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if you're on stage in front of a live audience it does. But if you're a PROFESSIONAL and you spent years in training it's less likely to happen but even when it does you'll know how to recover from it quickly if you're a trained professional.
      I have literally had that happen while on stage; performing a Shakespearean play in front of a live audience; in Hollywood. I was horrified in that MOMENT but we got through it and the audience never even knew that I screwed up.
      In film and television it's different because you can always just shoot the take again which you're going to do over and over again anyway but hopefully by the time you're filming you've done enough rehearsal that you've got it down.
      Also in theater you'll usually do rehearsal for weeks before you perform in front of a live audience but the one I mentioned above, where I screwed up... I had gotten cast in the play at the last minute because one of the actors dropped out at the last minute. I had no rehearsal at all and by the time I had the script in my hands I literally had four hours to memorize "A Midsummer's Night Dream". It's a miracle that we got through it but when you take on something THAT challenging and that seemingly impossible - then you get through it... it's almost like boot camp for an actor. If you can get through that you can handle anything & it's also a cause for celebration once it's all over - which we definitely did. The entire cast went to a bar below the theater and spent the rest of the night partying. I gave you the short version of that story, I could have written another twenty pages.

    I'm in NYC for the first time for a week to see if I'm willing to commit to the city and it's pretty amazing so far. Definitely not driving though, ever. I am looking to see if there is any extras work I can do while I'm here.

    What can I do to get more self tape requests? I think my head shot looks good (it's professional) but I only did one short film. Is a reel make it or break it? Other people seem to get tons of audition requests.

    I'm sorry if you have one posted already, I don't see it if you do, but do you have a video on making your own demo reel? I know you have one where you talk about it, but is there anything els you have posted?

    Hey Mr Kurt I have a Question. So I took acting/ voice acting classes from Middle school to High school. I Love to work as a Actor/ Voice actor could you help me with that?? I didnt go to college because of Funds and also with the issue that is still going on now! What do you recommend for where I can send my Demos too? If you have a person that I can do could you let me now? I'll like to know about this. Thanks I''ll wait for your reply back!!!!

    Hey kurt if you book an audition but it’s being filmed in a different city/country would you have to pay for transport??

      You're not going to get booked on a project that's filming in a different country. Not if you're an unknown actor - they are not going to buy you a plane ticket and hotel room which may cost more than the budget for their entire film and if they're working with a HUGE budget you're not even going to see that casting notice.
