  • Welcome to my home!
Originally from Cape Town, I have been living in the Eastern Cape for the past three years; two of which have been in the rural former Transkei region and one of which have been in this beautiful 'off-the-grid' homestay.
The experience of living in this 'rondavel' will continue to positively shape the way I choose to live for many years to come.

Hi Sara. I grew up in a rural farm in the 60's. We didn't have electricity and water. We used rain water, had a coal stove. Mum planted veg. My granddad planted mealies and took to the market. We ate fresh straight from the farm. Dried mealies was taken to the mill to be ground. We used the cobs as fuel. Life was beautiful and freedom was heavenly. Dad worked at the dairy so we had fresh milk and butter as a ration. Wow what a life.
Now I wouldn't dare to live like that. Definitely not in South Africa. Living in the city is scary, what would happen in rural area.
Thank you. Wish you happiness and safety. Love from Durban, South Africa.

Hi there I'm a South African and I'm really consediring living off the grid i live in Pretoria, Gauteng. And i live in the moot. I am sick and tired of LoadShedding and everything is getting more and more expensive and i feel trapped. I just want to live somewhere where there's more nature rather than the city. I'm only 19 years old and I'm still jobless but i love doing things like photography and art. Although my parents look after me. I'm just not meant for city life. Hopefully someday i'll be able to follow my dreams 💚

hey such a cool story, btw just so you know if you still have pump problems you can solve this quite easily also if you have compost toilet you could potentially be producing biogas and turn given hot water. I also have idea how to build off grid washing machine using a bicycle so you exercise while you was :D

Hi Sara we live like this in the middle of Centurion. Water is a problem as we are on dolomite ground so we cannot drill for a borehole. I have just put in Solar power. My adult kids hate it. I love it except for not having water. Please tell me how you build your compost toilet. I have tried the bucket method before but it does not work. How do you split the solids from the liquids?

Hi! Unfortunately I am not the brains behind the solar system featured in this video. However, you could look up Heartwood Homestead based outside East London in the Eastern Cape as they set up this whole system including the compost toilet, rainwater and solar geyser. Good luck!

The idea of using old tetrapacks as insulation is intriguing. Had not thought about it before but of course it makes sense as they are made up of aluminium foil and polyethylene and thus they're waterproof as well. Of course they're not much to look at but you can cover them up. Just googled it but there's precious little on the topic, but I came up with this here, apparently from Mexico.
