    The Temppeliaukio church was heavily criticised when it was being build for being too expensive of an ordeal. But it paid itself back in under 10 years in post card sales alone.

    Suomenlinna: interesting choices of words on escape. ;) Locals working there may have been prisoners. There's an open prison there, and the inmates work on upkeep of the island.

    One of the largest (if not THE largest) saunas in the world, and definitely the best known sauna in Finland is actually located in the western island of Suomenlinna, at the campus of Finnish Naval Academy. For obvious reasons, is not open for public.

    Smoke sauna is different in it that there is no chimney and you don't bathe when the fire is on but afterwards when fire has burnt out and smoke and carbon monoxide let fully out. Normal wood saunas and electric saunas are on when you are bathing.

      Plans for the Temppeliaukio/Tempelplatsen (Temple square) began as early as the 1930s, when a plot of land was selected for the building and a competition for the design was held. The plan by J. S. Siren, the winner of the second competition to design the architecture of the church, was interrupted in its early stages when World War II began in 1939. After the war, there was another architectural competition, subsequently won by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen in 1961. For economic reasons, the suggested plan was scaled back and the interior space of the church then reduced to about one-quarter of its original design. Construction finally began in February 1968, and the rock-temple was completed for consecration in September 1969.

    I remember that I really liked the Temppeliaukion kirkko, certainly a particular church but I don't find it right to pay 4 euros to visit it😅... it's absurd especially if you consider that visiting the Oodi is free. Nice ride to Suomenlinna, I haven't been to the island, I remember that the port was frozen and I don't even know how they manage to go there in the winter months🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @clopec
      @clopec ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it is wrong to charge money for visiting a church. But the membership in the Lutheran church of Finland is dwindling so they are strapped for cash.
      As for the Suomenlinna ferries, they run around the year. The ferries are capable of breaking through thin ice on themselves, and if they need some assistance, there are some tugs/ harbor ice breakers that can help (one of the ferries is actually a tug that has been converted). Until the 80s, there used to be an ice road to Suomenlinna during winters, so you could walk or take the bus.

    • @WorldTrypChannel
      @WorldTrypChannel ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@clopec I agree, you shouldn't have to pay the ticket to enter the church and in any case not only the Lutherans charge to enter, now there are many long places of worship in the world that can be visited only by paying the ticket😕...
      wow the road on the ice i would have really liked to see it... but i was in finland in february 2022😄🤷🏻‍♂️👋🏻
