LOCKED INSIDE? - to address the hundreds of concerned viewers: “What if someone locked you inside?” First off... this was one of the first concerns I had as I planned this out. I had planned to purchase a pad lock to lock the outside latch in the UP position. However, even with a lock on the latch, the hook can still be hooked and latched with me inside. BUT... because I parked in a city street and I had a cellular device with PLENTY of service, I took my chances. If I had become latched in there... I could have easily called for someone to let me out. I was not concerned in the least bit. I KNEW I should have included this in the video itself. Shame on me.

Agreed on lock on latch who cares, also putting a lock around the bar that gets the curl hook works also or cheap bike cable rapped around the hook bar part, let me know if you dont get what I am saying, you never want to be locking in, if you have to ax the roof its the thinnest way to get out.., never have another you in, also use some vise grips on the inside rails, use on wheels or at top, easy to unlock to get out, and also keeps out rif raf or po po.. good luck and keep warm, get some Styrofoam 4 x 8 sheets, to make a smaller cheap room in back cheaper to heat at night less propane use, and insulates, also 2 carbon monoxide detectors please, battery powered best to be alive so we can keep seeing ya in these videos.but i have had one fail on me.. best with two.... Life Well LIve Long Live how you want.. Be Smart.. thanks for sharing and helping others learn.. :) Happy Uhauling Bro Been there done that so have lots of tips if you need them...

Dude, I've totally done this exact thing on several occasions. As a mover, I drive these trucks everyday. Some trips take me many states away and sometimes its cheaper to rent local and return it rather than out of state drop off. So, lots of trips with empty truck on way back. To save money or just to be a weirdo, I would spend the nights in the back just as you did. Full on camp style. Door open most evenings overlooking awesome scenery, other evenings in a city with the door closed. My solution to keep people from latching me in...a pad lock directly on the little cross bar where the large hook latches. It keeps anyone from even being able to latch it, let alone lock it. Ratchet strap on inside is the best. Works like a charm. Great video! New sub.

And, honestly, that's all it is, stuff. The more money people make, the more stuff they buy and consequently the more stuff they have to worry about someone stealing from them. Why have it in the first place? I lived in a small box truck and converted the 12' long box into a home on wheels. I had a shower, bed, overhead cabinets, closets, lights, microwave, tv, dvd player, sink, stove, everything I needed. Propane heat, toasty in winter. I enjoyed working for minimum wage yet living like a king. It was steak most night, even Red Lobster once in awhile. I traveled all over the U.S. for 14 straight years. Never needed a motel room. I could travel for the cost of food and gas. Went north in summer and south in winter. Now I'm a wage slave renting half of a duplex. Miss the easy life. Only time I could ever save money earning minimum wage. It's not ideal if you have kids but for a single man or a couple it's great.

Many evenings when I got off work I would just stay parked in the employee parking lot. No reason to fight rush hour traffic to go anywhere, I have everything I need right there. While everyone else is fighting traffic and getting stressed out, I was sitting back eating dinner. I'd drive where I want after rush hour was over and the streets were clear and the driving was easy. Life can be good!

I have thought about learning to drive, purchasing a minivan or truck to convert it into a tiny home myself. I also considered the dangers of a single 50+ woman all alone in the middle of wherever I park. Is it safe enough, will I be able to sleep, what if? All of it creates the doubt that stops many from taking a first step towards change. I think I would feel safer in a van style home than in a shelter, on the streets or on a ferry where I spent countless nights when I had nowhere to go. Thank you for sharing your video, your positive attitude will serve as an inspiration to others.

You and I both. I can't find anywhere to reasonably rent that allows my breed of dog and I've got 3 weeks to move out of my cousins so I decided to buy a van and convert it. I'm a 23 year old carpenter and I've been doing remodeling since I was 16 so Its going to be a fun experience but getting accustomed to having my home on every job site is gonna be weird simply because of the dog aspect but we will both adapt nonetheless.

    • @chrisloydmas8499
      @chrisloydmas8499 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@csnievessings get a shotgun. They are cheap and very effective. If you want to take the time and got through very useful and necessary training, get a concealed carry license and purchase a handgun. It helps you sleep better at night, not because you feel empowered and think you can just shoot anybody and everybody, but simply because you have the power, if necessary to stop a lethal threat with little hassle if properly trained and an ideal break in situation occurs. Anything can happen and if you were to get either of the weapons mentioned, practice in a practical situation with the said van you are planning to convert. Practice in your current living situation as well and never stop coming up with possible scenarios to train for, because you can never be too prepared. Don't become a person that relies solely on that weapon either, because not all situations call for it. You have to understand the power to discern and use reasonable judgment in all aspects. I feel the only thing stopping you is the what ifs. Same for me. I have no other choice tho so now I have gotten past the what ifs and its full speed ahead. Purchasing an astro in the next 2 weeks. Good luck on your journey

The only thing that scares me about this is I have some medical issues and need to see doctors regularly. As I get older it will only get worse. I don’t know how I could travel around the country and still regularly see doctors.

As a single mother, I lived in a 14-foot moving van for a week while traveling with my 7-year-old daughter, two dogs, a bird, and two green water dragons. There was an opening between the cab and the back, so I could lock the rear on the outside with a padlock, and lock the truck from the inside.
In Oregon, I managed to pick up a couple of giant slugs to feed to my dragons - greatly impressing tourists from southern California. "Is THAT a SLUG?" Not like the little garden slugs back home.

Robert Miller There is an RV lot that's been built behind the Scott and White hospital in Temple TX. I've rented an apt 1br 1 bath and my lease expires so my rent has gone up from $650 to $909 with utilities I paid $950 this is more than a third of my income. So now I'm looking to buy a small house. If I can find a lot? I have a floor plan for a 4 car garage with 3/2 apt and I'm pricing it to be built with cinderblocks. There's a new name but I can't remember it. I'd like some acreage so I can get chickens, turkeys maybe even take a bee keeper or master gardening class. I want to raise at least 90% of what I eat. :) I've spent most of 2017 and 2018 homeless. Innovative and intelligent! Just a thought: I've been in a situation where I had to camp in uninsulated, very cold surroundings; if you can put one of those metallic 'survival' thermal blankets below your mattress you'll do yourself a lot of good-- all that heat that the metal is stealing away will instead be reflected right back to you, and it can raise the temp of your sleeping situation several degrees. That doesn't sound like much, but there's a big difference between, say, 35F and 40F. If you can find a large one and actually bring the edges up around you (think "partially wrapped baked potato") it'll work even better. You do lose a lot of heat upwards, but the ground/floor below you will leach it out in no time; a reflective surface really helps.
Another trick, one which has saved my butt (or at least my comfort level and my health) while camping outdoors: hot water bottles! You know, the cheap rubber ones you can get from Walmart or CVS or wherever? Make some fleece covers for them (or use old sweatshirts, though the fleece is better), heat up some water on your campstove (not to boiling; boiling will kill the rubber), fill them and tuck them into the foot and middle of your sleeping bag or whatever. Cover them up *thoroughly* and leave them in there for half an hour or so, and when you crawl in you'll be toasty. Forget heating-packs, forget butane hand-warmers... these are safe, simple, reusable and wonderful. Just be sure you tighten the stoppers well!

Yes, those "tin foil" blankets work wonders, they have sleeping bags and entire tents made from that material, I was out in cold weather and used the tin foil sleeping bag inside of a regular sleeping bag (I believe it was a minus 120 degree sleeping bag) and I actually got hot, so that material absolutely works and could save lives.

But before anyone says something, I do know how to survive off the grid. I'm a war vet of 24yrs, and unfortunately I spent two years homeless because I defended myself against someone who tried to rob me (in Virginia). This was literally about a month and a half after I retired, and I was convicted with assault with a deadly weapon. I served 10 months in a private jail, and during that time ended up losing everything. 6yrs later I was able to purchase a 4200qft home with just under a acre of land, a 2020 LT Trail Boss 6.2L, 2019 Impala Premier, and last Wednesday I bought a 2021 Slingshot SL. Life is good.

So in addition to "owning" those things...you get to pay "rent" once a yr to the gov. Own anything long enough and you might as well have bought it twice...seems like to me!
I never thought about it before now ...but it sure makes me wanna run away from home and "join the circus".

But, before you do...make sure you designate who you want to leave it to...(all yer stuff!).

I left Minnesota years ago in my CJ7 Jeep and headed south. I slept in my vehicle, showered at truckstops and absolutely LOVED living off grid. I picked up a few gigs singing in small clubs, and in between? Sold some of my expensive fishing reels to get me through. For three months I was sleeping in the woods. I never parked in public places. I always found back roads and pulled off to sleep at night. I was so darn proud of myself for the guts it took to chuck it all and hit the road, ending up in Florida where I lived for years. For years, I avoided hotels/motels, slept in my car on road trips people thinking I was nuts. Even today, as a wildlife photographer, I am alone when I shoot, and women I know MUST have a public restroom? Are you kidding? Nuf said. I laugh when I think about Covid and the fear people have using public restrooms on highways. NOPE. So, ladylike or not, I'd rather do my business in the woods (safely of course) than endure those traffic tourism nightmares at ANY cost. U.S. Fabrication comment below? Isn't that the truth!

Had a few occasions where it was 0 degrees during the night, I had a mattress and army sleeping bag, then when it got a little warmer moved to duvet and some blankets. The worst part was finding places to wash and stay clean (originally had planned on using the gym each day but they shut down because of covid), and also getting a hot meal. I worked on chemical sites so couldn’t have combustibles in the car for cooking or keeping warm etc. Great site loving watching the videos.

@Michael Pulliam food and necessities are a must in any living situation. I was just calling out the bills nobody thinks about. Maintenance, gas, shower facilities, how you gonna cook, where are you gonna poop when your on a back country road, what are you gonna do if you get a flat, van breaks down out of nowhere, it’s not all fun and games. You need to be able to survive if anything was to happen. You always need a back up plan. My back up plan is to have a home base. Never just go full time van life unless you have experience being stranded for a lengthy amount of time. Being homeless is not fun no matter what the situation is. This guy is making lemonade out the lemons he has been dealt with. He seems to have been living this way for a while and is used to surviving these scenarios. For someone starting out. It’s gonna take some trial runs before you go full on van living. Sorry if I seem like a Debbie downer. But it’s the reality of the life.
