The moment where Vox Machina attacks is just pure epicness. The scene where Vex drops Grog on Kevdak was an improvised moment by Laura and Travis and they portrayed it here almost identically to how it happened in the campaign.
Not to be that guy, but all moments of Critical Role are improvised.

and to top it all off, the line Vex says as she releases him is almost a direct reference to Pokemon, inspired by the cast referring to the locket as a pokeball multiple times over the course of the stream.
At first, Matt didn't get what she was trying to do, thinking she was trying to _hand_ the pokéball to Grog - but when Laura corrects him and says that she's pulling Grog _into_ the locket, you can see Matt's eyes light up, and he immediately goes with it.
He _lives_ for those moments where his players come up with crazy, innovative, off-the-wall solutions to the challenges he presents them with.
lol, oh trust me, the Critter fandom gets the sentiment about "we know he's a fictional character but..." 🤣

As for Gnomes, Scanlan is 69 (because of course he is) and Pike is around 40. Gnomes reach adulthood around 30.
And if I remember right they are one of the longer lived races, typically over 3 centuries if something doesn't murder them first.

About right yeah, not many live longer. Of course full blooded elves do, but beyond that not especially.
Two epic moments that came directly from the campaign: Grog calling out for VM to "f shit up", and Vex saving Grog with the locket and letting him loose above Kevdak for Grog to cut him in half! Love that they transferred well to the series, it was so satisfying to see it again in this form!
Also, the spiked barricade that Grog was impaled on was a direct reference. In the streamed game, Matt hand made spiked barricades by painstakingly gluing a ton of toothpicks together.
Steph: All the beats in the fight are so well thought out.
Me: Literally Improved by a bunch of nerds around a D&D tabel.
Well, show wise it looks well thought out. Actual table wise, well, it was chaotic with at least one big nat 20(The final blow). Good ol D&D
Such an amazing adaptation of the madness that was this fight in the campaign.
Nobody knowing Scanlan’s age was a running joke throughout the campaign because of his diva nature lol. But gnomes can live for centuries.
I have to admit I really enjoy compliments to "the writing" on plot points that were fully improvised live. (Not to minimize the excellent writing that makes sure those points hit as hard as they can, but even so!)

I love that they foreshadowed that in episode 4 when Grog said he wanted to try and I love it even more that people noticed :)
You mention that the writing was awesome, but a lot of the flow of the fight was improvised by the players. The writers just organized it into the best way to fit it into the show. Using the locket to drop Grog from above was an inspiration by Laura Bailey, Matt (responsible for the set up of the conflict) never even saw it coming.
Regarding the final scene...
It doesn't help that Scalan is 69 years old (as someone else said: "because of course he is") and Gnomes live hundreds and hundreds of years.
So, it was really only a matter of time until something like that happened to him.
Gnomes live up to 500~600 years old. And when we first met scanlan he was 69 years old (of course). And he is probably 70 now. And his daughter is probably around 25~30.
Probably over 30, since that's "gnome adulthood".
300-500 is really the max, and Scanlan is confirmed 70 at the end of the campaign. You're right about the daughter. Pike is never specifically confirmed an age, but it's assumed roughly 30-40
Grog literally became Kratos and went full Spartan Rage when he said “I would like to RAAAAAAAGE!!!” I mean he even killed Kevdak in a very Kratos way.
Also I never thought I would get emotional at the line FUCK SHIT UP!
For me it was the moment when Grog tells Earthbreaker how weak he was.
"FOR... STRONGJAAAAAAW!!!"

The song that Scanlan sings on the stage, you can hear the whole song at the end of the episode.
And it's even more uncomfortable having him sing that with his daughter than having him flirt with her. In the best way. 😁
When you talk about how well everything is tied together in terms of setup and payoff, it's a testament to the writing team. Most of the big payoffs are from the stream, but because this is written rather than improv, they were able to add the foreshadowing beforehand to really make the hype moments from the stream pop even more.
Matt's amazing at doing setup and payoff for his NPCs, but by virtue of the way the game is played, it's much less common for Player Characters to do the same (there are a couple of moments, especially in later campaigns, where they do manage, but it clearly took a lot of thought and doesn't always hit).
Not sure if you know but the second campaign of critical role also got a animated series. I hope you guys get to react to it when is out too because I really love the mighty nein.

@pasta1714 yup! They made a deal with Amazon for a bunch of stuff including a Mighty Nein (campaign 2) animated series.
And Amazon gets first crack at a full length movie!
The thing about goliaths and the Herd of Storms in particular is that they're migratory raiders. That's what their culture is based around, and it's almost Viking-like in that aspect. They'd never turn down a dragon fight. It'd be the ultimate warrior's death. Grog knows this, which is why he tells his cousin VM's plan to go after Umbrasyl.
As far as birth control options? Teas, potions, actual magic. It all depends on the individuals involved and their level of wealth.

That happened almost exactly like that in stream, except vex took ALOT of attacks to get to grog with her "pokeball" and almost got koed in the process... u guys should watch the scene from stream for comparison.
Man, I remember that. That was definitely one of the most tense episodes in CR history
This is my favorite episode in the show, it perfectly adapted the campaign. The way Grog killed Kevdak was almost 1 to 1 from the campaign, and him shouting Vox Machina, FUCK. SHIT. UUUUP! is straight from it! It's what started them helping him in the fight!
Dr. Dranzel was originally based on Dr Dre and was Scanlan's old band leader in the campaign. Scanlan himself is based on Slim Shady aka Eminem and his daughter Kailey is Eminem's daughter Hailey Jade.
BTW, a common prophylactic used in old times were sheep's bladders. Perhaps a strange kind of Trojan, but it worked well enough.
Critical Role, Season 1: Episode 52.
Possibly one of the most beautifully satisfying moments of the campaign; for context - Grog [during that attack] rolled 2 Dice to check if he landed that attack. [Advantage], rolling twice on a 20 sided dice, taking the highest value.
Rolled 1st dice: 1 on the Dice [instant fail]
Rolled 2nd dice: 20 on the dice [crit] for the finishing blow.
And vex almost died trying that maneuver which makes it even more risky.
They complain about kevdak having gloves, but not when he’s getting jumped😂
Yeah, figured he'd Hulk when he figured out where his strength came from... bit literal, but I guess it works for the visual medium. This fight is why Grog wanted to hold on to Craven Edge. But the single combat, the call to VM, the pokeball tactic and final blow... "At dawn we plan," "We're all cows..." all straight from the stream. The Kaylie reveal... apart from the nudity and bondage... yeah.
I believe sexual relations between long-lost relatives (whether they know it or not) happens often enough for it to be considered a cliche. That said, I'm more concerned by Kaylie's tactics than Scanlan's ignorance.
It happens more than people like to admit. Especially in cases of adoption. The world is quite strange.
"Vox Machina, fuck shit up!" was only said twice in Critical Role but it really is Grogs war cry and I wouldn't be opposed to them using it more in the show.

About the gnomes: they can live up to five centuries (although most die at some point after 350). The thing is that the first two decades of their lives they age as fast as humans, and after that they slow down. So potentially, a gnome dad of 50 and a gnome daughter of 25 wouldn't look too different agewise
The lyrics of Scanlan's song at the end were quite spice.

The best thing about critical role is that they are not just fictional characters. They become so real and you get so infested. Can't wait for more and hope you will do Critical the mighty night series too. Watching you enjoy this is great fun.

@Happy Slapsgiving It's not even that. It's more that it was just repeating the ball sack line in a different way. From a writing standpoint, it's a waste of airtime in a 30 minute.
14:42 Realistically, I have only heard of one time, a father flirted with his daughter but it didn't last a day, cause he recognized her face shortly after talking to her. That was way back in the early 90s. The only real way, imo, is if both parents or the mother just COMPLETELY cut off communication with each other. Even then tho, folks talk, friends of a friend talk, and now there's social media and I would imagine info would find each other.
In this sort of setting though, it's highly likely. Real world history is peppered full of examples, and in a setting with this many different races and magic, seeing someone that has facial similarities wouldn't raise as much of an eyebrow.

In this setting Gnomes can easily live to be like 300. So Scanlan is still in his first century which became an issue since he's been a prolific bachelor for several decades.

And Zanror? My heart belongs to him, he finally got his reward for all abuse he suffered and for his bravery. His shocked face, when he thinks that Grog should kill him, but instead it`s his shackles that are destoyed - perfect, I love these moments so much. And Percy looks so cute and small near two huge half-giants :3
