When this stuff with Vax this played out in the stream with having Vex killed and becoming the champion of the Raven Queen, Liam O'Brien, the player, had just had his mother die of cancer and to his own admission, was not taking being a servant to death very well. How broody Vax is in this show isn't even a fraction of how broody Liam/Vax were for a while, I can only imagine what his emotions were like. Matt introduced this scene of the communion with her to explain her neutralness, and while again, I can only speculate on what was going through his head, you could tell the whole thing was very game-changing for him (pun intended.) It really was a beautiful moment not just for the character, but for Liam as well. It made everyone at the table emotional, it made all the watchers emotional, and I'm truly grateful they've done justice to this scene in the impact it had in his character arc and, I imagine, the player.
Liam actually has said several times that it changed his whole mentality (and implies that extends outside the game), and that in retrospect, he wouldn't have changed the game experience for the world.
Considering what I’ve heard was going on with him IRL, that was probably a really cathartic moment.
@@mr.stuffdoer8483 It was, he said it himself that looking back, what Matt gave him and let him explore was something that helped him, A LOT. I remember everytime a moment with him happened and you saw tears fall, man... It was such strong moments for him, you could tell.
Ever since then Liam has campaigned on using D&D and other role playing games as a form of therapy. It helped him out so much that it changed his mindset. It also helped when he did a scene with Scanlan talking about dealing with problems.
Scanlan, at that point in the campaign, had a habit of pooping in enemies beds to leave a mark. Scanlan told Vax “You can either dwell in the sh*t or leave it in someone’s bed.” It was disgusting, it was profound and Liam looked incredibly confused that those words came out of his real life best friend’s mouth.
They talked about the differences between the actual play and the show on the watch party. In the actual play, Scanlan has a lot more spells, that they don't use in the show to keep characters simple. In this fight, he teleported in. So rather than try to introduce another power that they don't then make as another crutch, they had to find another way to do it for the show. In the writers' room someone suggested the butt and when they were all on the floor laughing they realized they needed to do it. 🙂

I kinda wish he had more spells in the show. As a big fan of magic in general, I love seeing all the different kinds and how a character combines their variety of spells to do stuff. I hope we do at some point get to see Keyleth and Scanlan learn/use other spells that they actually had in the campaign. Playing spellcasters is mainly fun, at least for me, because of the variety of spells and effects you can use.

@@ndstumme oh sorry. I got a bit confused. The watch party for E10-12 are today (now in Twitch) for Scanlan, I believe they have interviews with Polygon noting those spells they didnt have time to explain and si decided not to use.

He also gave grog the medicine via butt lmao he actually did it the whole season
In the campaign, it was an acid dragon. But they didn't go up the butt. That's what the writers of the cartoon came up with, because Scanlan doesn't have teleportation powers on the show like he did in the game.
The Matron looks so ethereal and otherworldly, they did an amazing job designing her "true"(?) form
Love to see the Vax/Scanlan bestieship blooming. It's very representative of the Liam/Sam husbandship lol. Can't wait for the tears that The Bard's Lament will bring.

Critical Role's Matron of Ravens is likely my favourite version of the "death god" archetype.
It presents as this scary evil thing that is grasping at your heels, which is why Vax's initial instinct is to run from it. But when you dive deeper, death is neutral, The Matron of Ravens doesn't revel in the claiming of souls, it is a necessary job, something must be there on the other side to ferry souls into the beyond, lest they be lost for eternity. And that in many ways is a beautiful thing.
The show did an impeccable job of adapting Vax's struggle and come to understanding.
Before anyone says anything, yes, I know the Matron of Ravens is very much based on the Raven Queen in the D&D pantheon, but there's something about how Matt played her / built up her lore in his world that's special to me.
@@pazz she's also the god of Fate, which is why it's more just kind of a neutral thing.
@@pazz There's a big change in the mythology of who she was and what her relationship with the other gods is. She also is a lot more fleshed out from an emotional standpoint thanks to Matt. He really did this to help Liam through what was an awful period of his life.
Raunchy and smart. That would probably be a good description of Sam Riegel. While some things got changed from the original campaign, the spirit of their tabletop game is certainly captured in this series.

I like how during the opening Achara uses two fingers when showing that a character is going to go inside the beast. Lol
I love the explanation that the tethers are not puppet strings, and you can even choose to ignore them.
I'm totally on board with The Raven now
She is an amazing deity, and Vax's story arc with her is honestly my favorite arc in the whole campaign. You've got a lot more good stuff to come.
Never assume you’ve seen all of a dragons tricks and powers until you have seen them cornered. They are far to powerful and tricky to show all their cards in a fight unless they are pushed to use them
Especially if you've not fought them in their lair.
Luckily we have season 3 to wrap up this arc! and also their second campaign The Mighty Nein are receiving a series as well! those events take place roughly 30 years after the end of Vox Machina's main campaign!
20 years, campaign 3 is around 30 years later
In the campaign, the dragon was an acid dragon, because in D&D 5E lore, black chromatic dragons have acid powers, and the idea of the Chroma Conclave is that there's one of each color of chromatic dragon in the group. However, they did not go through his butt, Scanlan used Dimension Door, which is a 4th-level spell that allows you to teleport up to 500 feet. But without the explanation of spell slots and ranges and all of the things that balance out spells in D&D (which Keyleth gives a nod to at the end of s1, when she's trying to explain her tree transport spell like 'well I have to be strong enough, and I can only do it once a day, and it has to be a tree I know, and...'), having him just be able to straight-up teleport is kind of OP, so mostly they use Scanlan's Hand (which is Bigby's Hand in 5E) to represent those moments.
Season 3 is confirmed, which is hype.
Kaylie *was* going to kill him, before he rolled a Persuasion check in the 30s, and Matt rolled a natural one for her attack. Originally, they dimension doored into the dragon and used an immovable rod, but this was far more entertaining.

Gotta love how when Kaylees was introduced her outfit matched Scanlans so well even down to her hair matching his beret

I'm not sure if they will ever do a backstory on why Vex has a sense for dragons, so probably best no one mentions. Could be a Season 3 thing!

Is it not just Primeval Awareness? The level 3 ranger ability?
Vex senses dragons because of her Ranger ability and because dragons are her favored enemy (due to one killing her mother.)
I have to say, the writers, including the Critical Role gang, are really good, BUT the good bits and clever ideas are just what they did live at the game! That is what separates this animation from everything else, they did it all on the fly while playing these characters in D&D, and we got to be there with them, like flies watching all the action unfold in front of us! I LOVE THESE NERDS!
In the game, there are 5 species of chromatic dragons. Red ones have fire breath, blue eyes have electricity breath, white ones have ice breath, black ones have acid breath, and green ones have poison breath.

I don`t know if the conversation between Vax and the Matron of Ravens plays here the same as it was at the table, but the words she said here really helped me to accept the possibility of loss and death.
One hell of a Fight
The THUD as soon as they entered made me laugh so hard I was out of breath. Honestly someone needs to cut in audio of Johnny Knoxville shouting “HELLO I’M JOHNNY KNOXVILLE WELCOME TO JACKASS!!!” and then play the music!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
