Yeah, so many people think of Dragon Ball as a prequel series, but it's one long continuous series that got broken in half due to a marketing ploy by the anime studio. Skipping it is missing a huge part of the story. And it's great, too.
Toriyamas work helped me through my troubles as a kid. His characters made me feel empowered when I was weak and when I became stronger it taught me to use that wisely and for positive reason
This work was made 37 years ago, and it's a miracle that Goku's voice actor, Masako Nozawa, is currently 87 years old and still active 👏✨ Masako Nozawa will also be voicing the new Dragon Ball that will be aired this fall. As a Japanese person, I have to say that she is number one in the world of voice actors.
I was honestly so shocked when I heard the news because I've had this on my schedule for around 3 weeks. I was supposed to start reacting to it last Friday, but due to internet issues I postponed it to Sunday. I heard the news about his passing on Friday, so I would've been right in the middle of watching when I found out the news if it wasn't for the internet issues :(( life can be funny sometimes... I debated whether or not I should still start it so soon, but all the fans of the show seemed to think I should go ahead with my plans as they were. I am excited to keep watching this legendary show by the amazing Akira Toriyama 🙏
i still remember the old time when i was a kid was watching dragon ball and some other dub anime ( my own language ) it was fun time we keep waiting to back from school to watch all day
many people never saw small version of him i would argue, cuz people skipped OG dragon ball and started from DBZ for some reason... at least i think that should be the case, props to those who watched OG too tho cuz OG is the best@@animaechan
Just rewatching Dragon Ball after the recent sad news. Shows still such a vibe and the old art style and inking methods give it such a nostalgic timeless feel. Goes to show the importance of solid artistic direction and how well it can stand up to the advancement of time.

This is why I love Animaechan ♥️, I don't hate English Dub watchers for the record , but there's just something with Japanese Dub that makes it like have a "Original Feeling" and because its in its original language , 90% of the time , I will understand more of the Anime's "Important Details" about the Story or the Plot (90% because sometimes there's translation problems), and the voice acting seems natural not like in the English Dub where the tone of their voice just goes "Upward" every time they end their sentence , and it makes my face cringe when I hear it😂 .
If your plan is to watch every Dragon Ball series, you won't be hurting for content for YEARS. Also, kudos for using the Japanese audio. "Where's your mother?" Ho boy, that is not a simple question. "It's Team Rocket, guys." You have no idea how right you are.

Here in Latam dragon ball is a classic, Goku has two voice actor in latam, one is Laura Torres for his child version ( and the child version of other two characters) and the second is Mario Castañeda for his adult version ( these is the one that people from latam associates Goku more).

Never watched the anime only read the manga so this will be my first time watching as well. Also is kinda crazy how well dragon ball's art has aged considering is from the early 80's so it's really worth checking out too
Me too. I grew up with the dub, since it is much more popular in the west, but i'm currently on my second watchthrough in jaapanese, and it's so much better. Especially the script. The voice acting in the english version is pretty good but the script has almost always been subpar.
Goku inspired a lot of shonen protags, but having never watched Dragon Ball, the similarities between Bulma and Nami are crazy! Such a clear inspiration.
@@jondoe7036 Actually, the Japanese reading of 孫悟空 is Son Goku and the Chinese reading is Sun Wukong. Early versions of Dragon Ball include parodies of Journey to the West, but halfway through the story becomes completely independent.
First time I see someone noticing this similarity too, Nami was definitely very inspired by Bulma and if you take Nami's personality and combine it with Hyori's body you basically have a version of Bulma in One Piece haha

I've never been huge into the Dragon Ball series, but I do have a ton of nostalgia from it. Just seeing the art style reminds me of my childhood. My brother and I actually had this show on DVD back in the day. It was the first anime we'd ever owned other than Spirited Away.

Lol So it’s pretty irrational to get upset at you/reactors for feeling differently about characters when they have no way of knowing whatever character arc said character might’ve gone through.

Falconer dub is iconic I don't know why'd you would think sub is better. In DBZ sub his voice doesn't match his body. Subbed Goku is a muscular man with the voice of a child it sounds weird.
THANK GOD you’re watching this in Japanese because Dragon Ball is notorious for having such an incorrect dub and most westsern fans seem to always recommend people to watch the dubs even though they were never accurate to the manga or Japanese (which the dub actors have also gone on record stating they agree with) So thank god you picked the Japanese version. You’ll be able to get the true Dragon Ball experience. Hopefully you have a blast with it

Dragon Ball has such an incredible style, both the manga and this anime ( i can't stand DBZ)....but this classic one follow the manga faithfully....so clean..... forever in love!!!!!!!
This work is from about 40 years ago, so there may be expressions that seem impossible today, and the pacing is entirely different from the present. However, back then, society was more tolerant in almost all aspects. In Japan at that time, VCRs were not yet widely spread, and watching television broadcasts was the only option. However, most students adjusted their lives to match the broadcast times, and every Wednesday at 7 PM, they would sit in front of their TVs, captivated by the shows. One thing that can be said without a doubt is that Dragon Ball changed the world of manga and anime. Without Dragon Ball, many of today's anime would be quite different.
I was late to loving Dragon Ball. Never watch it on my younger age in 2000s and got to see the DB Super in 2015 and I really hooked after that. And I manage look back at the OG and DBZ. Easily my top 3 anime.
Always remember how the whole dragon adventures started many of my friend started watching dragon Ball z first in tv of course but i start from dragon ball when it can to tv after 1-2 years after DBZ Dragon ball and Pokemon was my entry point to anime
God it is so nice to find someone that's actually watching the Japanese version. That English version always grates on my nerves with its constant talking during parts that are silent in the Japanese version and script changes and all that. And if this is your first time seeing the franchise, it is great that you're actually starting from the beginning instead of a third of the way through (which is where Z starts (which is what they rename it at the seventh saga in the anime. In the original comic it's just called Dragon Ball all the way through what the anime calls Dragon Ball and what the anime calls Z)). And just so you know, Toriyama has practically nothing planned out for the story. He's always making up new stuff as it goes along.
Cool seeing the subtitles going. :D Funimation REALLY changed a lot of the dialogue, you'll notice if you play the English audio with English subtitles.
Laura Torres gave the spanish voice to Goku for latam and she said that fell in love with Goku the fisrt time she saw his picture, sometimes she talks about her grandpa and how remember him helped to play Goku in an very special episode
I'm glad you're watching this in Japanese. Dragon Ball has way too many die-hard dub fans for some reason who think you can't enjoy the show if it's not in English. Granted the OG Dragon Ball dub is much better than its sloppy DBZ counterpart when it comes to keeping the script intact. I honestly love the DB dub, but I'd never recommend it OVER the original. Too many little changes here and there that take away from the intended experience.
Ya,the only other person that I know that has is @untoldreacts He finished all 153 episodes but he sadly got kidney stones multiple times and he hasn't posted in a while
Please, Animaechan, read the manga too. By reading the manga, you will understand why Toriyama is a genius. His paneling, fight choreography, and expression are in another league compared to the other shounen. I was blown away and never had so much fun reading a manga before; it flows so naturally and is so clear. His unique art style, worldview, and expression are all there.

Goku is actually 12. He just looks younger because was still in that Dr Slump faze where he made a lot of his characters very short and stumpy

Falconer dub is iconic I don't know why'd you would think sub is better. In DBZ sub his voice doesn't match his body. Subbed Goku is a muscular man with the voice of a child it sounds weird.

THANK GOD you’re watching this in Japanese because Dragon Ball is notorious for having such an incorrect dub and most westsern fans seem to always recommend people to watch the dubs even though they were never accurate to the manga or Japanese (which the dub actors have also gone on record stating they agree with)
So thank god you picked the Japanese version. You’ll be able to get the true Dragon Ball experience. Hopefully you have a blast with it

Lol, the first couple episodes of this show are actually insane.
This work is from about 40 years ago, so there may be expressions that seem impossible today, and the pacing is entirely different from the present. However, back then, society was more tolerant in almost all aspects. In Japan at that time, VCRs were not yet widely spread, and watching television broadcasts was the only option. However, most students adjusted their lives to match the broadcast times, and every Wednesday at 7 PM, they would sit in front of their TVs, captivated by the shows. One thing that can be said without a doubt is that Dragon Ball changed the world of manga and anime. Without Dragon Ball, many of today's anime would be quite different.
maybe more tolerant in Japan but definitely they were less tolerant here in the US, lol. The show had to be heavily censored in the US.

I was late to loving Dragon Ball. Never watch it on my younger age in 2000s and got to see the DB Super in 2015 and I really hooked after that. And I manage look back at the OG and DBZ.
Easily my top 3 anime.
I only watched dragonball 2 years ago while watching dbz like literally 50 times over.
Always remember how the whole dragon adventures started many of my friend started watching dragon Ball z first in tv of course but i start from dragon ball when it can to tv after 1-2 years after DBZ

God it is so nice to find someone that's actually watching the Japanese version. That English version always grates on my nerves with its constant talking during parts that are silent in the Japanese version and script changes and all that.
And if this is your first time seeing the franchise, it is great that you're actually starting from the beginning instead of a third of the way through (which is where Z starts (which is what they rename it at the seventh saga in the anime. In the original comic it's just called Dragon Ball all the way through what the anime calls Dragon Ball and what the anime calls Z)).
And just so you know, Toriyama has practically nothing planned out for the story. He's always making up new stuff as it goes along.

Funimation REALLY changed a lot of the dialogue, you'll notice if you play the English audio with English subtitles.

Laura Torres gave the spanish voice to Goku for latam and she said that fell in love with Goku the fisrt time she saw his picture, sometimes she talks about her grandpa and how remember him helped to play Goku in an very special episode

Dragon Ball is nostalgic because we grew up with Goku, he was a child when we were childrens, and he was an adult when we were adults.

I'm glad you're watching this in Japanese. Dragon Ball has way too many die-hard dub fans for some reason who think you can't enjoy the show if it's not in English.
Granted the OG Dragon Ball dub is much better than its sloppy DBZ counterpart when it comes to keeping the script intact. I honestly love the DB dub, but I'd never recommend it OVER the original. Too many little changes here and there that take away from the intended experience.

Please, Animaechan, read the manga too. By reading the manga, you will understand why Toriyama is a genius. His paneling, fight choreography, and expression are in another league compared to the other shounen. I was blown away and never had so much fun reading a manga before; it flows so naturally and is so clear. His unique art style, worldview, and expression are all there.
I've read the first 3 chapters, will for sure continue :)
