The publisher argued against aging the characters because they thought teen/adult Goku wouldn't have appealing adventures like kid Goku. When they let Goku grow into an adult, Dragonball's popularity grew faster than ever.
It was apparently quite the fight between Toriyama and his publishers because manga/anime characters rarely aged in shonen prior to Dragon Ball.
The fact that Toriyama was threatening them with leaving the series if they dont let him draw adult Goku is so crazy, aging mcs was not common at all back then

Piccolo JR showing up is still one of my favourite Scenes of All Time, watching for the first time its unclear how Evil he is but him Saving That Kid and His Mom then just stepping on the present perfectly captures where his Mind is At, he wants to Get Revenge by beating Goku, but unlike his Father JR wants to Rule the world not destroy it, because JR never got sealed away and came to fear Martial Arts like his father
We have ALL I've been waiting for you to see this episode. You are absolutely going to love this last part, I'm certain of it! And yeah you're right, Krillen and yamcha actually never saw King Piccolo. Also, King piccolo never actually wore a turban. I think the turbane was an attempt to go undercover, as he's known as Ma junior during this tournament.
The narrator called Piccolo an alien lmao. That is correct but in this show that kinda has no meaning when most important characters are aliens.

You have to remember that neither Yaumcha nor Krillin had ever actually seen King Piccolo, so they wouldn't know what he looked like, while Goku and Tien have.

I think the reveal of Goku all grown up is better in the dub because of the fact that he has a different voice actor doing him now that he’s older. In the Japanese, you would have immediately recognized Goku’s voice. But here, it’s completely different. It’s only when he starts referring to the others as he usually did that they (and the audience) realize it’s Goku
Yeah in sub he sounds like an old woman when he's a kid and sounds like an old woman when he's grown. Weird
In the original dubbing, Goku said that kami sama was the one who cut off his tail

He's still saying the same thing just in different ways. He's saying Kami told him he'll restore the moon if he let's him cut his tail. You don't really think a moon can just come back by itself?😅
You gotta remember Krillin only ever saw Tambourine before he got killed. He never actually saw Piccolo or even know of his minions.
But there were pictures and videos of King Piccolo all over the place, it's hard to believe he didn't see anything from him somewhere
@@cardosutoro9 the z fighters have never been known to just watch tv or keep up with social media or news. Most of the time they're off training in the woods or mountains. which sometimes makes them naive to what's happening. Usually, Bulma and the gang are watching tv when the big fights happen later in Z.

To clarify what happened with Goku's tail. Kami never restored the moon after Roshi destroyed it because if he did then Goku may have transformed again and caused massive damage. When Goku was training with Popo, Kami removed Goku's tail in a special way to prevent it from ever growing back. Once the tail was removed there was no danger of Goku transforming again so Kami restored the moon (presumably with the dragon balls).
And then he grew it back in GT.

Remember, Krillin never saw Piccolo Daimaku and Yamcha just saw him on T.V. never in person.
And just half body and without hat, this Piccolo have hat and is younger, props to Yamcha for not discriminate green people with big ears.

Krillin got KOed by Tambourine and missed the King Piccolo arc, while Yamcha basically watched tv the whole time.
I like the subtlety of Sean Schemmel's portrayal of Teen Goku. It's pitched slightly higher than his usual performace.
he variates it a lot, like you say it's deeper in general when he gets older, and then when he's in Super Saiyan 3 (and 4 in GT) or whenever he gets serious in Dragon Ball Super Sean deepens it even more and adds more grit to it
At the end, the narrator says "Is Goku strong enough to defeat the alien."
Thanks for the spoiler, Narrator-san. At this point, the narrative conceit is that he is a demon.
Krillin never met Piccolo he was too busy being dead.
Seeing you so full of joy is wonderful! This truly is one of the most wonderful episodes. I recommend watching it in Japanese eventually because its really better that way. Also, getting Masako Nozawas Goku is just great.

One is dead and no one including Goku has never seen him or at least remembers him, one won't be born for years and the others aren't Canon so.

They felt safe ripping off the look AFTER his aging up, it was only Kid Goku holding down that look for a while.
@@fredcoleman1538 I didn't count him because that's Zamasu in Goku's body. But if he does count, might as well count Ginyu too when he stole his body. Only difference is that Zamasu had a new name while Ginyu didn't

Whats great, is this is mirrored in the manga. Throughout the series at each tournament, toryiama had given goku the same pose. And each time you can actively see the size difference in goku.
People like to say toriyama didnt have a good memory, but he was still really good at these kind of small details.
Yamcha and Krillin didnt meet piccolo before.Krillin killed by his son.
Krillin wa dead the whole Piccolo arc, and Yamcha was sidelined. Only ever seen him on tv maybe, while Krillin never seen him.
You should watch OG Dragon ball Z in japanese after watching this, I have seen alot of the mainstream anime and subbed DBZ to me is a masterpiece both in story and voice acting, I never liked the English version except certain Bruce Falconer music tracks like Vegeta and Shenlong's theme. Also if you watch the subbed version, Dragon ball Z makes alot more sense as Goku eventually learns why his tail was removed as noone ever told him about the Oozaru transformation.

If i have to choose my two top sagas from Dragon Ball Classic it will be King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr saga as my favorites

On the whole moon being restored thing, what happened is that Kami wanted to put the moon back together but he knew that Goku would transform if he did. So he told Goku that he needed to get rid of his tail to do it.
People seem to forget how revolutionary in manga and anime it was for Akira Toriyama. To aged up goku to an adult.
IDK if you plan to watch this or not but a good Anime i think you should watch is Yu Yu Hakusho

Sadly we have to say goodbye to Stephanie Nadolny as Kid Goku. But now we finally get Sean Schemmel as Adult Goku.
And the reunion of Goku and Krillin was so heartwarming. And it was funny to see that Bulma thinks Goku got handsome, and remember at this point Goku is 18 and Bulma is 24, so it’s not THAT creepy.

Yeah we never see how Yamcha got his scars. At least we see how Tien gets his.
That little comment Goku made - that "the moon could be restored if [he] lost [his] tail," is believed to refer to Kami having struck a bargain with Goku (I'll bring the moon back, but only if we get rid of the thing that makes you turn into a giant unstoppable monster when you see it). Goku did not understand why until the Saiyan Saga, when he saw Vegeta transform.
This is very widely accepted to be true, but I haven't actually been able to find a source on it. Regardless, it's the most reasonable explanation.
16:29 Remenber Krillin and Yamcha never saw King Piccolo, Krillin was killed in the begining by Tamborine and Yamcha was injuried since the other tournament also Yamcha just see in person the killer of Krillin Tamborine, never saw King Piccolo! The only caracthers here who knows how King Piccolo is are Master Roshi, Chaoz, Tien and Goku!
Muten Roshi and Chaozu have only seen Piccolo Daimao before he wished back his youth. Only Son Goku and Tenshinhan saw him rejuvenated

In Japanese, Goku's voice actress is the same as a kid and as a grown-up, which is why I think to sub watchers Goku still feels like "our sweet little monkey boy" even when he grows up or achieves godhood and stuff in Super.
Not saying that him growing up wasn't a shock, but then he opens his mouth and you go "oh, that's still Goku!", cause it's the same voice.
I believe they did want to replace her too, but Toriyama fought for her to stay as Goku right? Or is that just a myth?
@@countprophet5881 I don't know if they thought about replacing her, but she was THE VA Toriyama handpicked for Goku, so he would likelly fight if they wanted to recast her.
Almost all kid characters retained their VAs too.
the one thing i noticed is that usually everybody shows up first and goku at the last minute but the first fighter to be there first was goku thats a shocked
This is the episode that makes you miss little kid Goku, enjoying that warm reunion and at the same time feeling nostalgic. Believe me, this episode hits hard when you're in your 12-13's when you are morphing into a teenager, when everyone are exited to grow up but at the same time miss your old little self while watching this exact episode. Personal experience, and from other classmates too.

While it's very subtle, goku actually did grow a little throughout the series.
If you look closely and compare his design in the king piccolo arc and the 1st 2 arcs, you can see he's a little taller and leaner.

Just bullshit translation. Kami decided to erase his tail so the moon could be restored. No tail, no crazy giant monkey. Goku at this point STILL doesn't know why and only knows about it when he fights Vegeta for the first time. How can Krilin and Yamcha recognise Piccolo if they never saw him? Yamcha just had a glimpse of Piccolo on TV but Krilin was DEAD the whole time.

In another video you claimed you saw DBZ as a kid. Was this through dvd releases, DBKai, etc? No way you were old enough to see DBZ when it aired on Toonami in 1998-2003.

Well, Goku was already considerably larger during the King Piccolo arc, actual having arms where he was kind of a ball during the first tournament. And believe it or not, this is not Goku's full lenght, he is still not long as Yamcha and still dwarfed by Tien. He grew pretty tall when reappearing during Z, when he is one of the taller ones of the group, only beaten by Tien and Piccolo Jr.
Toriyama just tends to make limbs longer during combat (which is why he wanted to make Goku grow so much, because it's hard to draw fights with characters being so short), we also see this with Gohan vs Cell, he's super jacked while fighting then, when everyone was at Kami's Lookout reviving everyone, he's almost half the size.
I'm pretty sure there was mention of goku training in the hyperbolic time chamber when he was a kid which would explain him growing fast.

Apparently people like Goku have sudden growth spurts around this age, so for most of their life they would look like small children through their childhood and most of their teens compared to most people
the part where Oolong's ears are mentioned, and Launch gets embarrassed too, is just a bad english translation of the original joke, though I can't remember what was said. But yeah, the dialogue and the reactions make no sense sometimes lol
Honestly wasn’t expecting the growth spurt of Goku happening this fast kinda miss kid goku 😭. Krillin and Goku reuniting is so cute love this friendship.
Something I find amusing is that you can hear Masako Nozawa trying real hard to make her voice sound deeper this episode now that she's playing an adult man, however it then starts to mellow out over the next few episodes into the Adult Goku we all know.
Is it true they tried to recast Adult Goku with someone else, but Toriyama insisted they stayed with Nozawa? Or is that internet myth?

at this point in the story even characters like yamcha are comparable to roshi in strength, krillin is probably stronger than roshi at this point, with his ability to fly and all.

Kame removed Goku's tail so that either he could restore the moon or wish it back on the Dragon Balls. I don't know if it's specified which but I think Kame is strong enough to just make a moon himself.
Either that, or he used the Dragon Balls.
They could have thrown in a joke about Krillin being jealous of Goku's height but i'm glad they went the wholesome route and had an emotional scene where he thanks him for reviving him. Side note, tired of these freaking onion ninjas 🥲

To be fair, neither Krillin nor Yamcha ever actually laid eyes on Piccolo. Krillin was only killed by Tambourine, not Piccolo, and Yamcha arrived at the battlefield right as Piccolo was defeated. So neither of them actually fully know what Piccolo looks like. Tien is the only one to have faced Piccolo in person, so it makes sense that he's the only one among them who would recongize that Jr. looks familiar.

At this point in the show, Piccolo is still a member of the Demon Clan so the anime/dub calling him an alien at this point is stupid. Remember the god of Earth is an alien. Being an alien in Dragon Ball does not stop you from being a demon.

I think the reason goku’s growth feels so drastic is because he looks his age where as up till now he’s look much younger than he actually was for instance when goku fought king piccolo he was over 3 years older than gohan was when he fought cell yet you’d think it was the opposite just from looking at them

I remember this episode back in the 90s (i know im old) would watch it on the mexican channel with dbz wasnt shown yet and no internet to spoil it, it was insane seeing goku randomly grown up for the fist time without knowing it would happen

You’ll find that, as you go through the series, 90% of the db universe don’t have the greatest of memories. As time passes, their memory of “cataclysmic” events just fade and I’m not sure why lol 😂 probably written that way on purpose
It’s all in how Funimation approached translating the shows into English during those years. After an unsuccessful attempt at dubbing Dragon Ball, Funimation decided to skip straight to dubbing DBZ and it was a bigger hit, but the company was still a bit green when adapting the material for both American audiences and TV restrictions. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT were dubbed (I think) at the same time after Funimation wrapped up Z and while the translations were a tad closer to the original Japanese scripts, they still had dub original ad-libs that contradicted what the shows and characters were about. It wouldn’t be until the games and the dub for Dragon Ball Kai where the English dub scripts became faithful adaptations.
