- We flew to Ontario to buy a 1947 Ford Super Deluxe Business Coupe with the plan to drive it home. It was advertised word for word as "Rust Free Original, with one repaint over 40 years ago. Recently Mechanic CERTIFIED. Safety Certificate Issued. Runs & Drives Excellent, Turn The Key And Go." We decided to check all the fluids before we start making the venture home but we ended up discovering something that contradicts it being mechanically certified ❌

So much for those “ big boy pants” you put on. This really says more about you than the seller. There were many valid points made in the comments. One being having a professional appraiser, two some things should be dealt with off camera. Also you yourself said it was a good deal regardless of any idiosyncrasies. The frame supports the body. Those brackets are secondary to the main structure. Just like any of the rust issues you identified, they can be dealt with later. Get on with your journey home and enjoy the adventure. I for one didn’t tune in to hear you complain. If you are smart, You’ll start your adventure home fresh with out this episode.
I guess you missed it. The seller is a professional car appraiser as in being one should of been more honest. Said he wasn't under the car, then said he was. That threw the red flag for me.

A '42 to '48 Ford has 17 points where the frame bolts to the body. None of them are what Chad had noticed, which is a running board mount. The body mounts on the side of the frame rail (there are 4 per side) are at the top of the frame, not visible in the video. There are also 3 at the "X", two in front of the rear axle, and 4 at the rear of the frame. This car is not likely to fall apart any time soon!

I think I have watched my last bad Chad video. I was looking forward to watching this road trip. After watching this video of you two trying to make this nice old car guy look like a scammer, I have no interest anymore. Buying a 75 year old car and expecting it to be perfect is just ridiculous. Watch the video again of the car and look to see where the running board's are this year car don't have running board's? They are body mounts. You read a comment of someone that don't know the year's of car's.

Chad, my opinion is those are running board mounts and not body mounts. I don't think Larry was trying to deceive you in any way. He offered to take the car back and refund your money. He was selling the car with the belief the Certification Certificate was legitimate. The issue with the running board mounts is minor problem. Take it back or repair and keep it!
You are mistaken. Larry did not claim the car was certified. Only that it had been certified for a prior sale a year earlier, as opposed to sitting in a barn for half a century.

He should not be an appraiser if he missed all the rust repairs done to this car. If it is properly appraised as a rust free car it needs to be put up on a hoist and carefully gone over to say what kind of condition it is currently in. If you watched the video of Chad putting it on a hoist at home and see how bad the work was done on it and a certified appraiser missed all that. I doubt it very much.
@@crzy11000 just watched the vid with the car on the lift and i have to agree. However chad is not new at this and should have known that rust poking through paint is just the tip of the iceberg. I find it odd that he had more of a problem with missing "body mounts" than with the rust.
I would never do any business with Chad. The way I heard the conversation he insulted Larry and implied he was a liar. Speaking of the conversation I would never consent to have my private conversation made public on TH-cam. I think Chad should have got permission to record it. Very disappointing.

If the Nova Scotia inspectors thought his stuff was on the road after the fab in public all that liability will come out in a claim or road infraction like your steer horn mod killed the ped not car design as intended. Some police here will send a vehicle to inspection even if insurance will let you plate it. Like homemade fence rail harley chopper front ends LOL! People need Ubuild apprv here to to register frames.

Oh dang this was like watching a slow motion car crash ... difficult to watch but couldn't look away. I don't think the guy was trying to pull the wool over your eyes. It's a shame you wanted to turn the situation into a drama for the cameras. I thought this road trip would be more about rolling with the punches and dealing with issues as they inevitably arise. Plenty of other ways to deal with the situation like going on a new adventure to a wrecking yard or local workshop to do some running repairs and meet some characters. That would have made for better viewing instead of the kinda stuff that leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
You may even have viewers that live nearby that would be happy to help out ...well at least before they watched this 😂

Should have been dealt with off camera, sorry Chad and Jolene, we all appreciate you very much and admire your work but this wasn’t called for at all, you have to keep your cool, I’ve had a very similar situation myself with an F100, and I just had to suck it up, fix it and get on with it. No need to drag Larry through the mud, publicly, no matter how you feel about the situation.

Perhaps you shouldn't be consuming 'reality' media via TH-cam. Chad handled that perfectly well. He gave that POS every chance to make it right. He bobbed and weaved throughout the whole conversation. Any honest person would have simply said. "Sorry. I'll make it right and refund your money immediately. I'm 50 miles away with my wife. I can be back home in 1 hour and 15 minutes with your money. And I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience. Would you let me reimburse you further by compensating you for your motel and airline costs?". He's a 60 plus year old auto appraiser and knows full-well that the onus is not on Chad to contact the mechanic. He is the persona that got 'wronged', he merely was passing the buck to Chad. Which is why I called him a POS. Telling Chad that his problem was with an unknown mechanic associated with an unknow company that signed a bogus certificate at some point in time, is bull$hit. You know it, we know it, Chad knows it and so does the seller.
Chad concerns were inaccurate. He might as well called and complained about a missing muffler clamp . To be that far over the top on something he knows little about, makes you wonder .

Chad on that car there are a total of 27 body mounts, the 6 you were complaining about are strictly for the running boards, so yes the car can be certified as "road worthy" so calling and complaining to the seller over 1 missing running board mount and one missing a bolt, and talking and treating Larry like you did, was 100% wrong on your part and you absolutely deserve to call Larry back and give him a sincere apology. Dude, seriously one way to loose a whole bunch of subscribers, its one thing to do it in private, its a whole different thing to tape it and do it on this platform !!! The only person you made look like a ding-dong was yourself in this video !!!

I just read in the description that the safety was over a year old, if that’s true then he misrepresented the conditions of sale. Safety is only good for 36 days in Ontario, the description says it was safetied by the owner previous to Larry.

I don’t know what video you were watching, but Jolene said the only reason she decided to go was because of the inspection and no money needed just turn the key and start taking it to car shows and the guy also said in the video if I recommend the car there is no rust and there is nothing wrong with it. Now Chad did notice the rust at the guys house and was being a gentleman about it and left with it. He stewed over it all night long at the motel, then went back out and looked the car over again I’m sure because he was upset all night long and noticed the body mounts were gone and this is a car with the inspection certificate. Everything was misleading in the ad. Now everybody that watches Chad and Jolene show sit back and watch how nice he makes the car and it will be right when he’s done and you know it. He’s got a good reason to vent now leave the guy alone.

I like watching this channel, with Chad doing his work. When you buy old vehicles there will be problems. The last couple videos Chad has shown a side that I don't want to watch. It's bad enough that TV has shows with drama. This channel is becoming that way.

And it would probably be a simple repair for the mechanic to do, it didn’t need to go this way. And I’m curious to find out if it’s even a body mount and not a running board mount, which Chad doesn’t even know at this moment. I feel bad for the way Chad is treating this guy, perhaps he doesn’t understand how things work in Ontario. Bring it back to home and get your money back like he said, I’m sure he’ll have no problem selling it to someone else. I did not like watching this video at all.

Unfortunately you lost a subscriber on this one (i have been watching for 2 years), i didn't see your other video but your apology was ok at first but seemed to have caveats; after this video I can only deduce how that other video really went. You are in the wrong here for a few reasons, not body mounts in the first place, you assumed he intentionally sold you a car knowing it was improperly safetied....you looked it over yourself, you are accountable. Didn't like how you behaved or how you treated the man, who seemed extremely genuine. Doing that publicly was in very poor taste.
Well,, I gotta throw my two cents in here people. If those were missing BODY mounts that car would be banging and crashing at the first bump. It looked like at least a couple inches clearance between . I agree with the folks that say running board mounts but I could be wrong . Im a retired mechanic of 42 years and have seen lots in my day. I just say that if it was body mounts you would need to wear ear plugs to deaden the banging noise as you hit bumps in the road . But I may be totally out to lunch. Just my opinion. He is being a complete jerk , before accusing the seller of having a fraudulent certificate, take it to a garage / testing station and get it checked ! I think he is being very unreasonable.! He knew damn well this whole thing would be filmed, I don't think he would have tried to pull this stunt knowing it's all on film. I think he was duped by the guy before him. I don't think Larry is unscrupulous what so ever , the car is 76 years old,.the mounts were probably lost when it was painted in 1980 if not before then. I have a large collection of old cars,some are ok some are choice. I don't know what Chad paid for this Ford,but that would a factor! The body mount could be easily repaired for $ 50.00
Tons of credit to Chad tho for not blowing up. It's so easy to feel scammed in that situation.

Those mounts will not affect the drive home, only a minor issue, I think you could have handled that differently, was kind of disappointing to see how you reacted. Remember it's almost an 80 year old car not a new one.

My 80 year old hubby says just drive it on and enjoy your trip if your worried about it just stop and have the 2 mounts fixed. The mounts may of came apart after the seller had looked at the car when he bought it since the certacation was older. It's hard to spot all problems when your excited to buy somthing. 2 mounts and a little rust isn't Realy something to stress everyone involved over. Try to enjoy each day life is way too short we know for sure.

@@david888a I re-watched his first video. He does mention some of the rust issues and you can tell it gives him pause but he moves on. Later he explained that he wasn't happy about it but given that fact the money was fronted and the car looked and ran good, decided to suck that up. I think that would be a normal reaction. It would be a deal breaker for some, but not for others. What other 47 are you going to find after all.
It's when other issues started to be found that start to quickly compound. No one likes feeling like the sucker.

I have to say a little more, in this case I feel like you were ready to just walk away from the situation Chad and it seemed like when you disconnected us Jolene was wanting you to call him again. You guys should not put confrontational videos out there because many of your fans do not like it and the last situation is still to fresh. It is not worth loosing your viewers over a couple mounts that you can fix in an hour. 1/2 the people on here are saying those are unused running board mounts, either way this is not a big deal for you Chad.

Check it out closely again, Chad. Make sure it's "Body" mounts, not running board mounts. I had a '46 coupe and the mounts, where you showed them were the running board mounts that I removed myself. I don't think, by the tone in Larry's voice, he was scamming you or wanted a battle. He said he'd take it back. I'm just going to pretend I didn't see this video. Sorry!
They look like the running board mount and that noise he complained about on the first video could have very well been the movement of the running board.

You should have done your own inspection including up on a lift. "Trust but verify" whatever a seller claims. Rookie mistake and honestly I'm surprised what you didn't do. Edit: You should check the date code on the tires. " Perfect tires" could be years old and dry rotted that can fail at highway speeds.
There is an old saying in the car business - "If their lips are moving, they are lying!"
To me, this is on you Chad. You maybe a good fabricator, but this is a sophomore mistake when buying a classic, vintage car. Its a very old car and your intent to drive it a long way home was extremely ambitious without 'a full check of every subsystem'...especially the braking system and even then, no guarantee you would make it.
So many things unverified. As Rick said above, this inspection should have been done up a lift. If it takes another day, so be it, if the plan is to make a road trip out of it for safety. If you don't have the mechanical expertise, which it appears you do not, then pay somebody to do it. I personally think you were being a bit unfair to the owner...or.....the owner was operating in good faith and what should have done as with most old cars is...the bill of sale should have reflected 'you are buying it as is.'
Stepping away from the drama, it runs and is a lovely car. A shame this element entered the equation needlessly.
Most would never attempt this duration of drive without a 'thorough mechanical review of every system of the car'...and even then, still a leap of faith.
PS. If you treated me as the owner that way, I would have asked for you to return the car and give you your money back and send you on your way. The owner 'and the car' deserve better.

I just want to say I'm not being a smartass about the tires. Years ago I bought a " perfect" old Chevy Suburban that spent ten years in the Nevada desert. The tires looked excellent too but because they had hardly any wear they looked new. One failed on the interstate and almost lost it. The tire date showed all four were 14 years old. I learned the hard way to check such things.
You shouldn't have to check a vehicle that has a paper saying it's certified! That's the point of getting one certified. Haven't been for seller saying it was certified I bet Chad would have found the problems.

This looks like Chad was just trying to start something with Larry and he had been so nice to them, he even offered him his money back. I wont be watching a guy that got pissed over a running board mount and tried to start some trouble over nothing....
And virtually calling him a liar was pretty disappointing. If the seller was so evil he would not have called straight back after Chad hung up the phone on him.

As again what makes you think this year of car has running board's? It's a body mount they went on it was certified it's safe to drive it home. It's no big deal Chad can shove a piece of tire in between the body and mounts.

I feel bad for Larry. Nothing worse then selling something to someone and them expecting a warranty for it. Your warranty is YOU inspecting it. And if you're not mechanically able to. Then get someone who can. And the fact they aren't even body mounts but skirt mounts make it all the worse. The best thing to do is call Larry back and apologize profusely . And say it was the stress of the long drive home and lack of sleep maybe.

I am a seventy one year old guy that has a keen interest in old cars. I have been watching your show since the show where you were talking with a bunch of students about your life and encouraging them into some type of trade. I was so impressed with your ability to hold their interest for the entire chat and even afterward gladly answering their questions. I have looked at your past situations and see that you had a pretty rough start and your tenacity and your ambitious attitude have carried you a long way. Jolene, you are a very special person to all but you have a very unique working relationship and your under the radar guidance in situations that require more finesse. I'm sure you were very uncomfortable with today's show, you both have my sympathy for your predicament.
0k, let me cut to the chase, first of all the fella your bought it from is not a mechanic and he bought the vehicle recently and is now flipping it to you.......ring a bell
Secondly the mechanic who's name is on the Safety inspection is likely younger than you and unfamiliar with a car of that vintage. Ultimately he is the guy that has failed in all of this.......do you want to disrupt his career for the sake of a couple ( 2 mount bolts out of between 8 and 12 ) really nothing to get all excited about. That car would last forever without those two attachments. You've over-reacted and as a result I had to give you a thumbs down on the show. I'm sure I wasn't alone on this........any of that ring any bells?

I disagree lots. I really don’t by looking art Larry’s cars and the years of them ,he is flipping them . The certifying of a car in these year for value or safety is probably bang 100% okay . The cars value is in the research is the buyers job . The car could be very sound and mistaking those brackets as body/frame mounts is Chad’s own ignorance . Thats is ok but he elevated himself into being a complete jerk and trying smear the other guy on air ,who maintained far more integrity and knowledge . He might as well told him to come and get the car because the 90 year old car had clamp was lose muffler clamp . After having his tantrum, chose to not listen and resolve it and just hang up …I see this differently .

And Jolene was egging on everything Chad said and did here so she’s not innocent either. She’s the one that was really suggesting legal action several times. Larry didn't seem like a guy who was trying to rip you off, he got upset with you because of the escalating tone/conflict. You'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, so it be kind, be calm and give people the benefit of the doubt.
If it turns out that you overreacted and those are running board mounts, you guys will look like the fools, Larry will have every right to suggest you made him look like the bad guy.
Jolene, Chad needs you to be a voice of calm reason, you need to help him de-escalate, not encourage him (as you did).

I disagree. U buy a car for 20k+ and u notice a major component missing after going threw an entire spiel of it went threw rigorous inspection and was gone over thoroughly i think id want my money back as well. As a buyer spending that much money u want what u are paying for and thats just that

At some point every channel runs into the Drama Problem. If you don't get ahead of it, you will be consumed by it. I've enjoyed watching Chad with his get-r-done attitude, which has made me much less afraid to tackle projects that intimidate me. For that I thank him. But if the content becomes overshadowed by drama, hasta la vista baby!

I'm pretty sure they are running board mounts. Not sure why they are there though. Being a 76 year old car, 2 bolts "missing" would be the least of my worries.
If you are ever buying a car over long distance ALWAYS pay for a local private classic car inspector to come and check it out before you commit to buy or incur travel/shipping expenses, especially if you do not know a ton about the mechanics of a vehicle (which I suspect is the case here). Even if the seller says it was inspected, you should still have your own done. They test everything from how it runs and shifts to the condition of tires and drivetrain and everything in between. A few hundred dollars is worth it to save yourself from issues. Confirm that the person is an inspector as well and not an appraiser, these are two totally different things. If the seller wont allow this inspection to happen, that's your signal to run...
Doubt Larry was trying to screw you over. Larry didn't certify the car, the mechanic did the certification. It's a lame situation but how is it Larry's fault. He offered you your money back.
