All three were great in their own ways. The move to 5/8 for wighton led to Souths having good mid-season form. Sezer’s experience led the tigers for most of the year and Flanagan was great having his best season in first grade
Flanagan - Solid season. Considering he’s barely above minimum wage and was a backup half playing all year, can’t have expected any more than what he gave. Closer to boom than bust. Wighton - South’s best in a terrible year. Boom. Sezer - Solid enough when playing, but he had some serious discipline problems that it seemed the other Tigers players picked up as well. Solid as a halfback, bust so far in terms of being a senior leader
Flanno was a good signing, his defence was something we really needed, Amone had no defence and Kyle was RUNNING our defence this year, Fox League expected him to be on a DCE level the way they talked about him. Poor Kyle..
Very, very jealous that you get to go. I was very tempted to go myself but I've got exams to do down in Canberra in the days after. I'm expecting the stream to be massive though, particularly when PNG play 💚
Did Fox League forget how badly Hunt was bullied by the media and the public after THAT Grand Final drop? And how he was smashed for not living up to his price tag at the Dragons?
Obviously it’s been well over half a decade since I wrote for them, but the time it was very obvious on their website that you could apply and write articles
I have a question regarding the Wighton signing. Do you think that once he moved to 5/8 he should have then been taking up more of Souths' salary cap? Wasn't he signed on lower money and approved that way by the NRL because he was signed as a centre? The Raiders offered him a lot more money to stay and play 5/8. It was largely his move to 5/8 that led Souths to not getting the wooden spoon. Just seems to be another case of the NRL prioritising a high profile club over a lower profile club.
Yeah personally I don’t think there’s that much to it tbh. Raiders definitely offered more money but Wighton was at a point where he wanted to move to a top club, almost no matter the money. In 2022 the top 5 5/8ths in the comp earnt an average of $764k a year (as per the Sydney morning herald). Wighton - albeit in an increased cap - signed for 800k per season (again, as per the SMH). So I definitely wouldn’t think its so blatant as to show NRL intervention
There was an American baseball manager in the 1970's who answered the reporters who asked why his team was trailing the field-- he said, "I managed good, but they played rotten" or some equivalent sentiment. One might say that these "busts" are in many cases a player who played good but his teammates were rubbish.
Forget about the delay in publication. The use of the word borderline in front of neglect is the real crime. Neglect isn't one of those things you can kind of do. Either you're neglecting something or someone, or you're not. It's like the authors just wanted to put a fancy-sounding adjective in front of the word neglect to sound smarter. It is the kind of nonsense I'd do when writing for the uni newspaper.
I read it to mean that it was 'almost neglectful'. Like it wasn't actually neglect, just short of the border of what they would consider neglect. Very hyperbolic and objectively wrong article in any case, which is a shame because I always considered Fox Sports the only redeeming feature of the Fox brand.
roosters got flanno to try get xerri soon as xerri got suspended flanno got dropped and fell out of favour and ever since then he's been a media punching bag which is unfortunate since hes a talented player and playing under Barret isnt good for young playmakers
Yeah I’ve always felt that Flanno just kept finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. That being said, I did have a lot of belief back at the Dogs that he was the right man to partner Matt Burton
I'm a supporter of the Roosters and as one-eyed as they come, but the way we handled Flanagan is something I'll always feel ill about. He was pretty new to first grade and took over from Cooper Cronk, an ultimate legend of the game. He was set up to fail from the start, and I'm glad he's doing far, far better at the Dragons
@@iwenttobunnings7868 Yeah look I personally see Sam Walker as a potentially generational talent - and the way the Roosters handled that Flanagan situation indicates that the Roosters have always thought the same. I have no idea which halfbacks were on the market at the time - but I remember being surprised that they didn't target more of a veteran considering Walker was coming through.

@TheLeaguie Tass is too good to be dropped, Mamouzelos didn't show enough for me to be the full-time hooker, I also don't think they will break up the Walker / Wighton combination after it showed positive results after Illias lost confidence I see either Dodd playing hooked or Dodd left out cause he was dropped by his Super League team after signing with Souths for poor form Duncan is the future, and I don't think they are gonna give his starting sport to Aitken, out of fear of alienating him cause he's dine nothing to lose his spot to a Jorneryman
