    Mariah did say, the one thing she held onto was her master's. All her written and produced works. She said she'd never sell. She also predicted all this back in the early 2000's. No one listened. They destroyed Michael for his.

      @@XAVIER-xz4qn having publishing rights is principally and legally the same thing as having intellectual property rights over the Masters and any other media associated with that album publication. Sometimes a studio will put a lien on a project or as part of their contract they hold and possess the physical masters, but they are not permitted to use them in any kind of public way without the permission of the artist if the artist retains the intellectual property rights and songwriting and production credits. It's all pretty convoluted and there's a lot of different combinations of these production deals that are signed by artists, and they get thinner and lamer all the time. I can tell you this, because I've signed several production deals and produced many albums over several decades, the music industry is the God damn devil

  • @FashionForwardAlways
    @FashionForwardAlways 3 ปีที่แล้ว +916

    This is actually truly worrying for the future at hand. We have already seen a plethora of albums that were released after the artist has passed that felt incomplete and not in-line with the artists vision.

    Thankfully, Taylor has the contractual rights to control her publishing, so she can veto any use in TV, films, commercials, video games, etc. Also, her first rerecorded album did really well on sales and consumption, at least for now her fans and listeners are streaming the re-recordings more than the original release, so the company that owns her masters might loose money instead of making profit as she continues to re-release her catalogue.

    Another point is the lack of new music with staying power. There might be one or two memorable modern pop songs per year at most. This is just completely untrue, there are way more than 2 iconic songs each year. There is not more or less ionic music now, you only think so either just the fact it’s easier to overlook a decade in hindsight to see how much “iconic” music is made or plain blind dumb nostalgia. Also media uses a lot of new songs along side older songs, but using older songs is not a new thing and says nothing about how good music is for a certain decade. People who claim music now lacks staying power are plainly just ignorant of modern popular music.

      @@domalistudios94 you don’t know how capitalism works firstly. Capitalism, (the Economic system of which the means of production are privately owned) doesn’t create your iPhone for Gods sake, human labor does, our economic system simply just dictates who reaps the profits and value from the prices we humans put on the product created by the workers. Without the workers there would be no product, no product = no iPhone, no iphone = no profits, no profits = no capitalism. Similarly in the music industry, the workers (the music artists) creates the commodity built for human needs, wants, etc. The capitalist (the record label/ CEO) reaps the benefits from the laborer because they decide how to put that commodity out towards the masses.

    Also part of the reason artist like Weezer started to join a management group. I remember back in 2008 Universal music HQ got caught in a fire and lots of Weezer's (and other artists signed) masters were burned to the ground. It was a crazy reset button and tons of complex contract to obtain their masters (found out recently that pre white album all of their masters are owned by Universal, thus putting some demos to a redundant state of incompletion and copying it will cause a fiery lawsuit). Then via acquaintances they ended up signing to CRUSH music, housing artist like Lorde, Fall Out Boys, Kurt Cobain Estate, it comes with a fee but at least you are able to keep your masters and having modern producers like Suzy Shinn to aid your style for a newer generations.

I always thought artists would want to keep their catalog in their families. Yes it may earn 100 million over twenty years but what about 50-100 years? How much are you leaving on the table. Then again, your catalog may be worthless 100 years from now - not likely but always a possibility. I think Mariah Carey said she wasn’t gonna sell her publishing and was gonna hand it to her kids, I don’t blame artists for cashing out though.

    I think the title is a bit misleading. Cooperations are not suddenly buying the music industry. They have always owned it. It's just that before the streaming, and to a certain extent even the digital era, albums and songs didn't not sell very much years after their release (unless you were a legend like The Beatles) so masters were not that valuable. Companies had other ways of exploiting artists as artists generally had less financial freedom back in the day.

    • @zero-pl3tt
      @zero-pl3tt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Artists, especially back in the old days, generally don't have that much business acumen. Which is not a knock agains them in any way, but it leads to them being exploited to hell and back by corporations. Take The Beatles for example, John Lennon and Paul Mccartney were lead to believe that making their publishing company public was a good idea, after they lost the shares majority they no longer owned their own songs. It's crazy how much shady shit happens behind the scenes.

    Nice video but there are a few key points missing with regards to why these big investments firms are interested in music IP. 1 - Music royalty income is consistent and measurable due to streaming data, thus easier to valuate. 2 - Music royalties are an alternative asset class that are uncorrelated to traditional markets (aka when the market is volatile or crashes, music income stays more or less consistent). 3 - The asset pays out cash at least 4 times per year and once the 10x-20x multiple is reached, you still own the principal. 4 - Because interest rates are low, it is very reasonable to borrow money (vs later with the potential inflation and higher rates).

      Shamrock holdings were not allowed by Scooter to contact Taylor before the deal was done so they contacted her after they bought her records and asked her if she wants to own her records in part but she refused because the deal Scooter made with Shamrock means that he still gets a good portion off of the music and Taylor did not want to be in any tie-up with Scooter. She shared Shamrock's email to her and her email to them on instagram with her fans.
      As the writer of all her songs, she always held the rights of publishing her music. That's why you can't hear any of Taylor's music before 2019 anywhere and after the re-recordings she will licence her new music to whoever wants to use it and not the original ones.

    I'm 60 years old now and I see a terrible dystopia they have planned, and I see that the heartfelt art of the great popular musicians is just going to end up as psychological programme reinforcement and nothing else. In the future the past doesn't have the same meaning.
    What if you have made a great work of art, what happens to it? It gets massed produced, prostituted around, and lots of other people make lots of money from it. I haven't got much time left on Earth, and some people will be exploiting my art when I'm gone, should I take the big pay out and enjoy my slow retirement?
