Your Masterson Stay Wet palette should have come with a sponge that stays under the plasticky palette paper sheets. If it didn't, I'd recommend reaching out to Masterson. You get the sponge damp and that little bit of humidity is what keeps your paints wet.

I learned both crocheting and knitting as an adult. I’m still pretty much a beginner at most as I don’t do them a lot. For me, one of the trickiest parts was figuring out if I crochet/knit left or right-handed. I do some things left-handed (including writing) and some things right-handed. Turns out, like with instruments, I’m more comfortable crocheting and knitting right-handed.
It also makes sense because I once tried to learn crochet as a kid, from my great aunt, but I think I tried it left-handed and couldn’t get the hang of it.

Unfortunately, not everyone can learn how from videos or at all. I've tried by having someone show me, videos and books...it's just not for everyone. However, those who catch it and can...more power to them because it really can be tricky to learn. ❤

I knit a little, and would like to be able to crochet, but something about it breaks my brain. I got a hook and tried following some tutorials, but couldn't successfully make a basic chain. I just can't seem to figure out how to hold on to everything simultaneously; I'm always dropping the yarn or the hook or having the yarn go flying off the hook, etc. I'm sure it's one of those things where it's easy once it "clicks," but I've not gotten it to click.

I can understand being frustrated about Putting Halloween stuff in a supermarket/walmart in July or putting Christmas stuff up in September, but its actually really smart in a crafts supply shop. It means you have tonnes of time to make gifts and stuff with in theme items. Also if you run a small hobby business, you need to get things ready way in advance of the celebration. My sister in law does pottery and she starts making pottery pumpkins for Halloween in April.
Also you really need to try out Golden Fluid Acrylics. They are the Italian kiss.

This video reminds me of that time in art school when I got onto the metro to go to class with my toolbox full of art supplies, set it down next to me for a minute to grab something from my backpack, and then it was just gone when I went to pick it up. Big sad/angry feelings. I had some stuff in my backpack, obviously, but I did have to do a lot of rebuying over the next while, including my watercolours, and a lot of my brushes and mediums. I had to be very careful in the choices I made when replacing what I'd lost. I needed to immediately be able to make things, but also take care that my new supplies didn't break the bank. It was an interesting challenge.

7:40 There's a reason for this! In craft stores, they wanna give customers enough time to feasibly complete their creative projects before that season actually rolls around, so they pull out the stock for later seasons a whole season early. For little things like decorative pumpkins, you might not need much time at all, but if you're making an extravagant costume or a large display, it's gonna take the average 40-hour-week worker a good long while to finish. That's why you see fall stuff in craft stores while generic and clothing stores are still pushing their summer wares. It doesn't explain why non-craft retail stores routinely trample over Halloween with snowmen and reindeer, but it's noticeable that those other retail stores don't push other seasons early while craft stores do.

@@sarahschreffler5407 A lot of people are reaaaally into halloween and go absolutely feral for stuff coming out early. they probably keep putting it out earlier and earlier because they sell out of a lot of things really early and they are trying to beat last years sells/demands.

I've moved waaaay too many times!! 🤦‍♀️ A huge tip I would give you is to get the huge sharpie. It has about a 1 inch chisel tip!! It is dark black and stinks to high heaven, but worth it!! 🤗 Use that to label each and every box. Make each letter at least two inches high to label room on each box!! On ALL sides of the box! Underneath that in smaller letters, label the contents. You are more likely to get things in the right room! Assume you will not be the one placing things, people will be in a hurry, and if using movers, they may or may not be the best readers. It is important to keep room labels short and easy. Fun to go with you shopping!! 💕 I hope you find your two boxes of supplies!! 👍

We lost everything including my beloved cat 😭 in a fire a year ago & we are still in temporary accommodation (will be for the next year too). I spent the first nine months pretty much curled up in a ball doing nothing, I was so scared of getting anything dirty in this rented space. I've now started to get a few bit together & started to join in with the monthly swaps on my craft FB groups. It's actually taught me to think outside the box and I've had to be inventive! I started with a job-lot of inks & stamps being sold on Ebay but the best investment for me is a really good paper trimmer. Congratulations on your engagement 🙂

The teal paint bottle from golden is from their “liquid” line, it’s about the consistency of whole milk, not toothpaste like their heavy body (the tubes). Golden’s different lines are made so they can be used in the same piece, but they do have different use cases they each shine in.

-AlteNew alcohol markers (my fav brand)
    -Uncoated wood free paper
    - Zebra Fude brush pen extra fine and medium
    -Pentel Hi-Polymer erasers
-A watercolor palette, I’m not picky sometimes I just like playing with watercolor so I wouldn’t wanna be without one for a year and a water brush to use with it

I use Mastersons Sta-Wet palettes for my acrylic painting process. So I was very concerned to see that your palette didn’t come with the magic sponge that keeps the moisture within your palette. But after researching I realized that the one you got in particular doesn’t include one as it’s mostly used for oils. I hope it really works for you and you don’t get discouraged to use them if this one doesn’t do the job 😬

ooo thats interesting, I wonder why?? Perhaps this is a new design that doesnt need it? Does yours take a while to get the lid off because it was almost suctioned on there so I wonder if they have a different seal that doesn't require the sponge now?? Thanks for letting me know!

@@ChloeRoseArt I buy sham wows from the dollar store for mine and they work exactly the same and cost less :) I also found from an art teacher that if you mist the top, and put it in the fridge, you get even better results.

    • @space.tel-e-grams
      @space.tel-e-grams ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@ChloeRoseArt The one you got with the blue lid is the same one I have, it's a "palette seal". The reason it doesn't come with a sponge is because it is meant for a wooden or glass palette, but you can use it with the sponges too if you want. It's dang near airtight so that's why it's hard to get the lid off. I use a 12"x16" glass palette in it, and when I used open acrylics it would keep my paints wet pretty much forever just by keeping a wet paper towel balled up in a corner. I've since switched to oils and it keeps them from skinning over, and keeps the cat hair out.

    • @rette2901

I actually have one of those pallet boxes. While yes, they can preserve the paint for reuse, the paint WILL still dry out over time. It will just take a lot longer. Honestly? Best to use up the paint after a good few days of it sitting or else you'll have wasted it or added to your new Jackson Pollock esque piece- if you don't change out your pallet paper like I did, that is.

I've had to replace my art materials a few times over in my life. Catastrophic not only because I'm "without", but I have many interests and as you well know EXPENSIVE. I've recently begun to rebuild, and it took me a few years to want to (and not just because I'd gone digital- love PROCREATE and can't live without it). It ate a bit at my self, and took some real mourning this time. The benefit of this, I'm trying new things (or old things I'd wished to have learned.) so I have to play, because for all I know, I actually have some new favorites. As to old, I love Zig calligraphy pens, though I love my old Rexall, I haven't used them in a bit, because they've changed ownership and not only are they different, so is my eyesight. But like you, I adore the Fudenosake markers by Tombow (they also make a great refillable pocket brush, that is fast becoming another fave to draw and calligraph with). I also come back over and over again to Pilot's B2P (bottle to pen) ballpoints, especially the black) for drawing my pen and ink. The Fudenosake and Zig add MORE punch when I want an OMGoodness black to my drawing. Right now playing with gouache and watercolor, though I work mainly in acrylic. I'm also using Arteza quite a bit, not only because they're relatively inexpensive, but they are quality enough. Love Strathmore multimedia sketch (reminds me to do a sketchbook tour, because I'd really like to get over my despite of sharing TH-cam and TikTok videos-I know I've not utilized them enough, I just feel old, awkward and not so attractive, but in the end, I think what's in my noggin' is more important, so ONE of the goals this upcoming year is to get over that shtuff.) Bought a few spoiled artist books to play with as well a Canson sketchbook. The next two will be the two you suggest, I've heard from many they are both good, but it's like good Chinese food. As much as I want to try something new, I KNOW I love what I love. Anyhow, fun videos, love the accent, and your art. Great good luck in the new place and congratulations on becoming engaged1

Probably get the mission gold pure pigment set bc it’s a good price and very vibrant and you can mix anything with it and then also some tuner acryl gouache cause those are my babies. I would need a large etchr sketchbook and then a less expensive sketchbook aswell, maybe a gamma by stillman and birn or strathmore mixed media cotton

maybe you could have your art friends send you some art supplies they think are essential for someone starting new? like essential beginner stuff, essential intermediate stuff, essential pro stuff? and then you could compare what everyone sent and how much they agree or disagree?

When this video popped up, I stopped everything I was doing to watch. As an artist, that title really hit...right in the feels. But you make a good point! There's nothing like buying _new_ art supplies. And yeah, that art bag is pretty sweet. Ohhh! I _LOVE_ the Tombow markers! Do you refill yours? I started doing that a few years ago. I use Platinum Carbon Black and it's been excellent. I use it in my Kaimei brush pen too.

The things I used the most in my life are Steadler pencils and erasers, I can't live without them!
    Also anything from prisma color!
I do really love liquitex and I use Pebeo acrylics also! They do one of the best gouache too!
I really want to try the Golden and artist loft, I just don't when I'm gonna have the time 😅
Also, Never buy the brans Try art (Canadian brand), the tubes dried on me after few years...
I have some tubes of Liquitex and Pebeo for over a decade and they're not dried at all!

1st - Never too early for Halloween!!! 😂
2nd - I feel your pain. Moved from NH to CA brought most my supplies with and bought more. Moved from CA to AZ - brought most supplies. AZ to NH - brought most and bought more. Moved NH to Australia. Hoarded art supplies in Australia… brought home as much as I could when I moved back to AZ. Lived with ex. More supplies. Left ex now staying with family. Supplies ended up in storage, and here. Parents moved to AZ from NH… brought more of my supplies with them I left behind. As of this week… it is all finally in one place… minus my crafting and cake decorating supplies. 😬 I need a house.

So I'm currently working part-time at [the store in your video] whilst working through a professional program in another field, and I wanted to comment on the seasonal change. It's true, we get a lot of comments from people like, "Halloween already?!" But at the same time, we also already have people asking for Christmas(!) stuff because they want to get started on Christmas projects "in time." I'm sure some of the logic in getting seasonal materials out early is so people can work them into crafts in advance of the season they would display them.
I'm working on a project to knit winter scarves and hats for donations, and obviously I'm knitting them now, in the summer, or they won't be ready for winter! But it maybe does come across as weird to be knitting a scarf in July.

When I got married in 2019 I had one of the drop boxes with hearts but it’s got our names and wedding date on the background and we had a box with all of the hearts with our wedding colors of sharpies (red, black and silver) and it turned out soooo cute after people wrote on them and dropped them in.

I did the same thing about moving fast and had to put everything in a storage unit. Then.........AN IDIOT BROKE INTO MY STORAGE UNIT AND STOLE EVERY THING!!!!!!! I was crushed my grand mother spinning wheel was in there. I had my Cricut and a bunch of other high end items I had bought over the years about $4,000 worth of stuff not exaggerating. If i could just get my Grand-Mothers Spinning Wheel back I would be so Happy. Now I am SLOOOWLY rebuilding my supplies and tools.

Most craft stores put our Christmas in July, it's not to try to rush the season but to give crafters time to prepare and create their creations.

Michael’s is ok for some art supplies, but mostly for crafting and student grade supplies. The professional art supplies they do have are overpriced because they don’t get the wholesale price breaks that, for, example, Blick’s does, and they also expect that you will use a coupon, which is only 20% off now, most of the time. Having said that though, bc I use crafting supplies or when they’re discontinuing an item, I shop fairly often at Michael’s AND I’ve gotten some killer deals…even on the occasional fine art items. You have to just go in and scour the the store shelves and clearance section, though. The “killer deals” I’ve found were just items that were being discontinued by Michael’s and that the store I was in wanted to quickly get it out of their inventory. I was blown away when I got some Winsor & Newton Professional oil brushes for $2 -$5, that normally sell for $10 -$18 or more. On another occasion, I got a set of 30 Caran d’Ache Supracolor2 water soluble color pencils for about $32/$33 dollars (it’s been a while.) These often sell for almost double that, even on Blick’s. So even if you don’t use some of the “killer deals” you come across, you can almost always resell them as long as you offer a reasonable price….and you’ll make a bit of a profit.👍

Starting over with a limited amount of supplies may challenge you. You may find some creative ideas you wouldn't have otherwise. Personally, I'm using liquid acrylics. I first bought them for painting sculptures and started trying to do some painting on canvas. For me they work fine because I'm not a professional artist. I can mix colors with them and I just like using them. 😃😃👋👋💖💖

  • @agentxp0749

Great to see what your art essentials are, love this sort of video! :)
I wouldn't be able to manage without coloured pencils - I'd go straight away and buy some Derwent Lightfast pencils (my faves), either in a 100 set, or open stock, my fave 30-40 or so colours, followed shortly by some of my fave loose Polychromos and Luminance colours.
I'd also want a selection of both Winsor and Newton Professional and Daniel Smith Watercolour paints. I'd probably start with the WN Pro metal tin of 24 half pans and build my collection from there. (Plus Holbein Leaf Green and Manganese Blue Nova are two fave watercolours I would buy in tubes)
For paper, I would get a Stillman and Birn sketchbook, (probably Beta for watercolour), as well as a nice medium grain cartridge paper sketchbook for just doodling with the coloured pencils. For paintings that I wanted to take more time over, I would get some Bockingford Hot press watercolour paper. :)
I would also grab a Pentel Aquash waterbrush in a 'broad' size, as I can't live without one of those. Also a Uniball Eye Micro pen for rough paper linework, and a Faber Castel pitt pen in 0.3 for smooth paper linework.

Awesome hall!! Always wanted to try gouache but too broke to get them 😅. Also I recommend trying out the infinite pencils (best place to buy them on a budget is temu which is where I got mine). I know ya don’t sketch much but having a pencil with an always pointed tip is definitely an upgrade even more so than mechanical pencils since these last MUCH longer, there are even some colored tipped ones although I haven’t tried those yet 👀
