Since most prisoners will be released, rehabilitation and a successful transfer to non-prison life should be the goal. 4) US has a constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment, which serving food which had been marked "not fit for human consumption", or serving food full of maggots, I think most people would consider cruel and unusual punishment.

God bless you. I didn’t know what you did but I hope you’re doing great right now and not too disenfranchised. Prison is not like university or college, it’s not a place to achieve a higher milestone or to get a better life, it’s a place of punishment and sheer retribution in some cases and it’s a one way ticket to exclusion and lifelong disbarment of basic rights. While it is true that inmates lose a lot of rights when incarcerated and only have half of those rights restored if paroled, some people are wrongfully pressured or even convicted of crimes. Again, I didn’t know what you did but it doesn’t matter, I hope you’re doing well and having a good life. I’m sick of the fed govt and state and local level politicians treating our inmates like how the red armband-wearing folks did, I wish our country’s prisons are more like Norway.

Any homeless person with an ounce of tact can eat ten times better than any inmate. Dumpster diving, begging, foraging, scavenging, any of these methods can provide superior cuisine than any incarcerated person. However, it's true that a lot of school children in the US are fead by the state for about the same amount as the incarcerated, in theory at least, however that's just more a reason to harass your local political representative, not those unfortunate to be incarcerated. You need to punch up, not down.

Most patients like you are either picky or because you were dialysis, your options were very limited, of which you should already know. But I wouldn't go so far as to say prison food is the same as hospital. I've worked in several hospitals and the food are all edible and taste pretty decent. The American police are extremely motivated by getting arrests to close cases. They don’t care if the suspect is guilty or innocent they just need a body to arrest to lower the clearance rate. Of those arrests many of those people are either too poor to afford a good lawyer or not mentally apt enough to understand the situation they are in. Many are sent to jail without even getting a fair trial or rot in prison because they can’t pay bail while awaiting their trail. Even if the extreme case that less than 1 percent of people in jail or innocent (it’s much higher than that) the U.S. has more than 2 million people in jail right now so that’s 20,000 people in jail that are innocent.

The inmates who worked in the kitchen took some pride in serving up the best food they could make. On the weekends fried eggs made fresh, or breakfast burritos that were good enough I would pay for one on the outside lol. You still got a lot of carbs, but nothing like what is being shown here. Where I was at you could also buy protein powder if you were lucky enough to afford it and it wasn't bad either. Alot of guys got it for working out, but it would also supplement any lack of protein that may have been lacking in the state meals. If 1 in 20 prisoners are falsely imprisoned that alone would be enough to justify making prisons more humane because we can agree it is wrong to torture innocent people. Of the 95% that are guilty how many have committed a crime which you would actually consider causing them personal suffering for? According to the Bureau of Prisons 45% of prisoners are incarcerated for drug related offences. Should someone guilty of possesion of an ounce of a herb legal in some states be tormented in another? In a lot of cases these people need therapy and rehabilitation, and in fact if they are from a rich enough background they can avoid prison by showing a judge they are rich enough to buy these therapies. So in practice only poor drug offenders ever end up in prison. Does that mean we are tormenting people because they are poor?

Because most of those prisoners are in there because they like getting high and never actually harmed anyone or anything. Drug laws are unconstitutional based on any reasonable account of the Constitution's conceptualization of implicit rights, so you should be outraged at their mere presence in the prison system, let alone the other indignities that people like drug 'offenders' are forced to accept, like the food that doesn't even meet the standards of the prison regulations themselves.

That is actually solid healthy food. Vegans eat meals typically without meat because there’s plenty enough protein in peas and beans to stay healthy and build muscle. Most people who get diabetes in prison do so for the same reasons everyone else does - they start “supplementing” their meal plans with trashy commissary foods like sweets, cakes, cookies and ramen. You may not like the beans and peas as much, but you won’t become diabetic eating them. There’s a whole nation of people called “China” who have lived off a starch based diet for their entire history (rice, beans, corn) and have thrived. Once they started eating western foods, colas, and sweets, then here comes the diabetes.

What the comment section does not seem to comprehend is that the general consensus in America has shifted away from emphasizing the corrections part of prison to the rehabilitation part of prison like Norway has. If we haven't we would still be pushing for mandatory sentencing of drugs instead of legalizing weed. In order to prevent a human from reoffending we must treat them like a human on the inside.
