This is the prison food menu from Alcatraz: The original daily menu, established in 1934, included oatmeal, milk, fried bologna sausage, cottage fried potatoes, toast, oleomargarine, and coffee for breakfast. Dinner contained bean soup, roast beef, gravy, string-less beans, mashed potatoes, and coffee. Supper was a meal that had pork and beans, cornbread, potato salad, apricots, bread, oleomargarine, and coffee. And these prisoners were the worst of the worst.
I can speak for jail, the food isn’t even decent but it tastes edible. The problem with where I was had to do with the schedule. Your last meal was around 4pm, lights out Sunday-Thursday was at 11pm with Fridays and Saturdays at 12am. The portions aren’t enough to keep you full or at least satisfied, so if you couldn’t make store for whatever reason to get noodles or snacks, you’d be going hungry all night.
I remember when I was working at Auntie Anne’s, my coworker took a pretzel out the trash to sell to someone. I quit after finding out our manager told them to do it.

In 1995 I spent 3 & a half weeks in Atlanta County Jail in NJ. I ate everything they gave me on my tray and a dude looked out for me and gave me a pack of ramen noodles every night the last week I was there. I lost @ 20 lbs.... maybe a little more. Idk how people survive without commissary. I don't know, but I don't think things are any better today
And this is why we have the biggest prison population and less rehab rate. We should be aiming to help these people, who are largely convicted of nonviolent crimes, get better and contribute to society.
In Georgia's state-run prisons, the kitchen is staffed by inmates who prepare the daily meals for the rest of the population. They are under supervision by the correctional officer in the kitchen. The experience the kitchen inmates acquire can also be a part of the culinary education program offered by the prison. These programs are part of the vocational training options available to help the inmates qualify and get jobs after being released from prison.
One thing I noticed that the emphasis is on punishment, while it should on rehabilitation and reorientation whenever possible. That's what US Jail/Prison system is supposed to be all about. Bad food is just another way to sabotage this and further increase the rate of recidivism. Getting rid of private contractors may not be the answer, maybe stricter regulation is?

I'm a CO at a prison and honestly most of the food isnt that bad, also helps that Texas makes their own food, grow their own vegetables and raise their own animals the offenders eat, not bad
Larry Lawton said that they can feed inmates on 50 cents a meal. In some prisons they serve preserved meat from desert storm that is so tough you can chip teeth.
I spent 18 months in county and ate commissary food every day. Had protection and people were generally nice if you mind your own business. I even got a cake on my bday. First time in a decade and it was in prison.

Yes we were all in jail but we didn't deserve being fed like animals.

I'm so glad this was brought up from someone that's been to prison in my state it wasn't nearly as bad as what was on this show but you got to remember some ppl in prison really do try to change and I've met some decent ppl they just made some mistakes, furthermore do you really like three idea of abusing someone for weeks, years knowing that one day they are going to get out and b your neighbor there might b be a lot of resentment built up from abuses from the penal system

As someone who's worked in multiple prisons. It is honestly no where near as bad. As he is making it out to be. They kitchen in a prison is ran the same as a restaurant. Granted, I have been in kitchens that were unsanitary. When I had to work as a transfer for a prison in Ohio. But that was the worst of it. They get truck once to even twice a week just like a restaurant. Sometimes every two weeks. And the meals aren't always bad. it just depends on which inmate is working in the kitchen at that time. The portions of food are based on the correct portions according to health standards a person should eat in a day. Like certain amount of proteins, cards, etc. So that's why it seems like a small portion. Cause most of us don't ever pay attention to serving size.
I don't know where this "hypothetical" prison is. I work in a prison and they get three full, hot meals a day. Milk every morning. Condiments are provided. We have inmates with no money who are 300 pounds. I have heard many guys making these claims to people on the phone to get them to "put money on their books". And if a Sheriff is in charge, that is a jail, not a prison. Great researching.

Why not just treat people like humans and give them a meal? Roce, beans, and other inexpensive bulk items could easily fed prison populations.

Capitalism. All I can say is you get what you paid for. Even in China, you get served properly portioned meals. Usually, it's stir-fried cabbage with pork slices (very light dish). Prisoners are also allowed to have condiments such as chili sauce "Lao gan ma (Old Godmother)" etc., and you can ask for more rice, if you are not full, to mix with the spicy and salty chili sauce.
I think rice, frozen fruit and vegetables and cheap brown eggs and can beans should be used more as it’s super cheap. They can also replace all beef with white meat only

They usually only give you a set amount of time to eat too,whatever you don't finish is thrown out. If you are in high level prison an travel in line to chow hall. BTW ALWAYS take peanut butter sandwiches if you miss a meal. It's actually quite a bit of PB. Also people hoard PB SO you can get more. You'll be so hungry at the time...you'll be begging for food people didn't finish if you have no comissary. Hearts & Parts is the worst by far.
Here in SLC, utah.... The food bags being prepared in the kitchens are labeled "not for human consumption". Half the daily calories in our jail meals are in the tablespoon of butter.

@@MrMisterDerp I meant some people. Not ALL people, but a great deal of them get put into Jail/prison for speculations and lose charges for a senifagent amount of time.
eh hi “senifagent” huh? How long of an amount of time is that?? And yeah there will always be people wrongly accused and wrongly incarcerated, and 99.9% of the time, they get set free after a short time behind bars. But also, odds are, if you get incarcerated, you did SOMETHING to get you there.

@@MrMisterDerp maybe so, but even when there let out, or, wrongly convicted, the prison conviction could possibly records, which could deny them jobs, housing, etc. In addition, paying their own expenses and fees for ankle bracelets and lowers. In most cases, in the end, right back in prison. Unless there lucky.
They usually only give you a set amount of time to eat too,whatever you don't finish is thrown out. If you are in high level prison an travel in line to chow hall.
BTW ALWAYS take peanut butter sandwiches if you miss a meal. It's actually quite a bit of PB. Also people hoard PB SO you can get more. You'll be so hungry at the time...you'll be begging for food people didn't finish if you have no comissary. Hearts & Parts is the worst by far.

Here in SLC, utah.... The food bags being prepared in the kitchens are labeled "not for human consumption". Half the daily calories in our jail meals are in the tablespoon of butter.
It's time to make prisons not for profit all together! They should not be making money based on the amount of bodies they have in the system.
If I would run a prison, id make it so that the prisoners would actually want to stay in, while still letting them know that “Hey, you did a bad.”

Here in texas lunch is the big meal of the day. Food aint too bad. At least here, inmates and officers are served the same food.
