I feel like their punishment should just be a nutritional supplement like ensure but a cheap version when your committing crimes you don't deserve even small luxuries. The supplement would be enough to maintain a healthy diet and no humans rights violation.

This is the prison food menu from Alcatraz: The original daily menu, established in 1934, included oatmeal, milk, fried bologna sausage, cottage fried potatoes, toast, oleomargarine, and coffee for breakfast. Dinner contained bean soup, roast beef, gravy, string-less beans, mashed potatoes, and coffee. Supper was a meal that had pork and beans, cornbread, potato salad, apricots, bread, oleomargarine, and coffee. And these prisoners were the worst of the worst.

I can speak for jail, the food isn’t even decent but it tastes edible. The problem with where I was had to do with the schedule. Your last meal was around 4pm, lights out Sunday-Thursday was at 11pm with Fridays and Saturdays at 12am. The portions aren’t enough to keep you full or at least satisfied, so if you couldn’t make store for whatever reason to get noodles or snacks, you’d be going hungry all night.

In Georgia's state-run prisons, the kitchen is staffed by inmates who prepare the daily meals for the rest of the population. They are under supervision by the correctional officer in the kitchen. The experience the kitchen inmates acquire can also be a part of the culinary education program offered by the prison. These programs are part of the vocational training options available to help the inmates qualify and get jobs after being released from prison.

One thing I noticed that the emphasis is on punishment, while it should on rehabilitation and reorientation whenever possible. That's what US Jail/Prison system is supposed to be all about. Bad food is just another way to sabotage this and further increase the rate of recidivism.
Getting rid of private contractors may not be the answer, maybe stricter regulation is?

As someone who's worked in multiple prisons. It is honestly no where near as bad. As he is making it out to be. They kitchen in a prison is ran the same as a restaurant. Granted, I have been in kitchens that were unsanitary. When I had to work as a transfer for a prison in Ohio. But that was the worst of it. They get truck once to even twice a week just like a restaurant. Sometimes every two weeks. And the meals aren't always bad. it just depends on which inmate is working in the kitchen at that time. The portions of food are based on the correct portions according to health standards a person should eat in a day. Like certain amount of proteins, cards, etc. So that's why it seems like a small portion. Cause most of us don't ever pay attention to serving size.

I don't know where this "hypothetical" prison is. I work in a prison and they get three full, hot meals a day. Milk every morning. Condiments are provided. We have inmates with no money who are 300 pounds. I have heard many guys making these claims to people on the phone to get them to "put money on their books". And if a Sheriff is in charge, that is a jail, not a prison. Great researching.

Thats like saying as bad as sleeping in a shelter is... its better than being on the streets. Sure, at face value it is. But it poses so many risks that it is almost as bad. Why not just treat people like humans and give them a meal? Roce, beans, and other inexpensive bulk items could easily fed prison populations.

Capitalism. All I can say is you get what you paid for.
Even in China, you get served properly portioned meals. Usually, it's stir-fried cabbage with pork slices (very light dish). Prisoners are also allowed to have condiments such as chili sauce "Lao gan ma (Old Godmother)" etc., and you can ask for more rice, if you are not full, to mix with the spicy and salty chili sauce.

They usually only give you a set amount of time to eat too, whatever you don't finish is thrown out. If you are in high level prison an travel in line to chow hall.
BTW ALWAYS take peanut butter sandwiches if you miss a meal. It's actually quite a bit of PB. Also people hoard PB SO you can get more. You'll be so hungry at the time...you'll be begging for food people didn't finish if you have no comissary. Hearts & Parts is the worst by far.
