What Japanese Prison Food is Like ★ ONLY in JAPAN

  • Japan has some amazing prison food, which should be no surprise. Inmates are served healthy, nutritious meals of grilled fish, salads, rice and soup - which are actually healthier than most school lunches around the world! Would you like to try what prisoners eat? There's a prison in Hokkaido that serves authentic meals to the public and that is where I went -- Abashiri.
Abashiri is in the very north of Hokkaido and is famous for its prison. Their "Bangaichi Shokudo Diner" is the only restaurant that serves authentic prison food in Japan, the ingredients the same as the penitentiary nearby. The meals will probably surprise you!
    Prison Food Menu:
SET A: Pacific Saury, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (780 yen / $7.00)
SET B: Atka Mackerel, 2 salads, barley rice, miso soup (820 yen / $7.50)
It's called the "secret meal" because Japanese Prisons are very restrictive with access to the outside world. However, Abashiri is dfferent and they've opened up prison life to the public and it's worth a visit.
We also get a tour of today's prison cells in Japan. They have tatami mats, futons, TV, toilet and window. There are private cells and cells for 6 or more inmates. Japanese inmates typically eat their meals in their cells.
The Japanese prison life is regimented, the schedule the same everyday. Wake up at 6:40am and lights out at 9:00pm.
Meal time is three times a day for 20 minutes.
    Where is Abashiri, Japan?
    It's in Hokkaido's north, a 90 plane ride from Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

Japanese prisons are extremely dehumanising. To name a few, you cannot talk or socialize, your cell is not heated/cooled and the lights are not turned off, you must do work, you must March, you must face the wall.
And if you are bad enough to be on death row, you are not notified of the date of execution, so you must spend everyday in dread.
So no, prison life, in any country, is not fun.

Meanwhile gullible fools like you believe they know Japanese prisond based off a propaganda museum, how pathetic. Russia should do a Gulag museum too and fill it with luxurious foods like caviar and nice big beds with TVs, it'll fool the people like you who fall for anything they see.

I've lived in Japan for 15 years and recently I've been arrested when I was renewing my driver license because I forgot to renew my residency card (my working visa), which lasts for 5 years and it was expired by 6 months... I know that's dumb to forget that, but it's not like I would have any reason to not renew it on purpose as I still had the same job. I went to a detention house(留置場)in Tsukishima (Tokyo bay area) for 2 days. It's not a prison(刑務所)so I expected it to be less harsh but after watching a few videos here about prisons in Japan I can tell it was actually worse.
I had an empty cell with nothing I can bring in and absolutely nothing to do except reading a book during the day (books they lend are taken away after 8pm). I couldn't even remove the clothes I was given and use it as a cushion to sleep cos it is considered suspicious (apparently) and had to sleep with the lights on and it's forbiden to hide his face from the light. No way to smoke (I'm quite a heavy smoker) so I just couldnt sleep at all (about 4 hours in the whole 2 days). They checked my whole body for anything I could hide, even my mouth. The food was really awful, the books they had were mostly in japanese but a few were in other languages, but pretty bad...
I speak fluently japanese so that wasn't an issue for me, but everything, all the rules were so harsh it looked as if I killed someone or tried to escape the prison previously, given the amount of security and precautions taken around me. There are 2 baths per week so I went once, and that's the only time I could meet other inmates who looked like yakuzas (they had a lot of tatoos). Having a TV or a smartphone, or my own books as I saw in the videos about prisons in Japan would have been a huge improvement. Here at the detention house I was almost in complete isolation in an empty room, no way to see outdoor. Once per day you can go out of the cell for 3min, just to do some exercise but you actually don't really have the time to do so. You go to a room which is half outside but you can't even see outdoor or the sky. You are not allowed to do anything and you are called by a number and never by your name.
It's odd that there was a reminder about the driving license renewal but none for the visa, considering the amount of punishment you get if you forget it... So again I know it's dumb to forget but still...
Now I'm still under conditional release and I'm not allowed to continue working until the procedure ends (that is until I get my visa). And it's been already one month...
PS: I've been back to work since January 2019, 3 months after the arrest and everything is fine now.

Cost of food in US prisons, $0.56 - $1.77
    Incarceration Rate per 100,000 population:

I don't think people here are realizing how inhumane the prison system is in Japan. Not in terms of amenities/food obviously, but do some research into the typical day of a prisoner in Japan. Your entire day consists more or less of being forced to kneel/sit/stand silently in a room facing a wall for hours and hours not being allowed any interaction. You're looked down on as less than human with 0 emphasis or even effort for rehabilitation (yes, I know the US prison system isn't great either) and have more or less no freedom.

I wouldn't be so quick to label Japanese Prison food as really good. First off, what you had was cooked to order and served hot. In actuality it would have been prepared well before serving time and in big batches for several hundred inmates. There wouldn't have been time to cook that fish, or any of the other dishes, to perfection like the restaurant did. Also the food would sit until it was passed out, and that would affect the taste. Good ingredients is one thing, but poor preparation, which was probably the case in prison, would make the good ingredients not as tasty as you think..

What I'm saying is that what you ate, while the same basic ingredients, was not prepared and served in the same way in prison. That makes a huge difference in the palpability of the meal. Have I been in prison in Japan? No. However, I was raised in a children's home, and I'm familiar with 'institutional food'. The home was ran by the State of Ohio, and the food that was purchased was a very good quality. However, when cooking for 500 kids, and then holding it to be served when all of us were in the dining room led to a decrease in the taste. Cold mashed potatoes, greasy, cold fried eggs, etc. However, there were actually some dishes that were better when they were cooked in large quantities. Chili, vegetable soup, and other things like that were much better than home cooked version of the same recipe.

That’s exactly how my old high school prepared lunch. Except it was reheated frozen foods with unknown ingredients . Of course it wouldn’t be restaurant quality, but it’s better and healthier than what I would get in school.

in japan, the selected prisons have their own kitchen and the prisoners cooks their meal as a part of program. they serve food warm, if it is not hot. we japanese, even criminals know how to be remourseful we won't demand much.

yoruel sanguillen I spend 23.56 every week and I make healthy casseroles that last me the week. I make an egg casserole for breakfast that has eggs, hashbrowns, ham, and green onions with cheese baked on top it serves about 15 portions. for lunch I make a sandwich. I’ll switch between a tuna melt and roast beef. For dinner I make a casserole, enchiladas, or ill make twice baked potatoes filled with what I want all of these keep and will last you a week. Its really not that hard.

    • @peko3996
      @peko3996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@Craig Laycox This is a museum. Theyre not going to give prison food to people. Japanese prisons are just like every other prison, this is pure propaganda to make Japanese law system seem humane, when in reality is it very flawed and harsh just like the US. The meal is an upgraded version of prison food, usually prisoners just get rice and tea, in order to keep them borderline healthy enough to perform labor. Their cells also are mostly empty.

Hmmm... I’ve actually watched documentaries and programmes interviewing ex Japanese prisoners on Japanese TV and what they had to say about the food and the prison system is very much different from what’s portrayed here. Not saying what they said is all true either but I have to take this video with a pinch of salt and can’t help thinking this must be a “heavily edited” version of a prison museum by the Japanese government.
