Not trying to be a smart ass but Micky Thomas did not sing for Jefferson Airplane. He was a backup singer for Elvin for a while before becoming their lead singer and before that he was with a band called The Jets. Thomas would join Jefferson Starship in 1979 but Jefferson Airplane disbanded in 1974.
Not on the Midnight Special you can tell it's a live performance cuz it's not exactly like the studio version every act on The Midnight Special is the live performance check out the journey on Midnight Special back when I had Greg Rowley on keyboards and singing duets with Steve Perry
💯 if our friend thinks he’s singing on this song wait until he hears Jane… it’s insane to me that no one has chosen that song on The Voice because it showcases amazing vocal range.
Live….LIVE!! No net. Mickey was one of three backup singers and Elvin let him do this song because he himself felt he couldn’t do it justice. What a gift he gave us.
It's not like this is the first time you've heard Mickey Thomas sing. You've already done Jefferson Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "We Built This City" and you should listen to their song "Jane" with his great vocals too.
That was pure LIVE, thanks to the Midnight Special. Stuff like this EVERY week, by bands you loved and bands you had never heard of, black/white/rock/country/blues/new wave/punk/disco/soul... Life was beautiful.
I love the line from Charlie Daniel's song "The South's Gonna Do It Again." He says "Elvin Bishop on a bale of hay. He ain't good lookin' but he sure can play." 😅
True story. In the 70’s I went to his concert. He was outside the venue and called me over. I had no idea who he was so I moved on. Could I have been one of his million girls? 😂
This appearance on the midnight special back in the day with Wolfman Jack was like a big Friday night show where a lot of musicians sang their hits on...
This was back in the early to mid '70s when my kids were born and the Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack was like a staple back then of hearing new music and him introducing new artists sometimes... we had Solid Gold which was a good show we had Soul Train we had Night Trax on Friday night...Then came MTV videos... We grew up as parents with the turntables and the stereo systems and hearing real music with real instruments none of the fake s*** that they do now... We didn't have like a TH-cam where you could look up anything you wanted and listen to it live and watch it and all of that like we do now...
Spot-on! and this was his highest charting song. He was a founding member of the incendiary and trail blazing Paul Butterfield Blues Band. PS, BP, love your attidtude!
TALENT! NO auto tune! Artists of this era (up to the late 90's), would have been insulted if they were told to use auto tune and audiences would have booed them off the stage and not bought their music if it and other "aids", like prerecorded vocals were used "live".
Just goes to show how fantastic backup singers are and that they deserve the spotlight ..... shout out to Mickey Thomas who gets to step into the limelight in this performance. Related to this, there's a great documentary about backup vocalists "20 Feet from Stardom".
I saw Elvin Bishop, With Mickey Thomas back in the 70's and they KILLED it. I think everyone in the joint was partying. You should hear him sing "Jane" with Grace slick, Great song...Great reaction!
True that. I've read Elvin figured he better be a great songwriter because he wasn't going to make it big with his looks. Or as Charlie Daniels wrote in a song, "Elvin Bishop sittin' on a bale of hay; he ain't good lookin', but he sure can play."
This is one of my TOP three favorite songs of all time!!! Serious classic! Mickey Thomas later joined The Grace Slick in Jefferson Starship and then Starship and they had a ton of hits. Check out We Built This City or Jane!! Mickey's voice is up there with Steve Perry in my heart. This song is now part of my DNA.❤❤❤❤❤
Thank goodness someone uploaded these Midnight Special shows, I watch these most Friday nights. That lady is living my fantasy to be a backup singer, she is so into it. I hope she continued to have success and happiness
God bless the Midnight Special! That was the only way we saw our favorite artists, live, back in the day when we were too young to go to a concert! Bless them for showing us the artists performing (and singing, sad we have to say that these days) live! I have this song on a 45 and I can tell you that this vocal is live! I love watching you discover and appreciate new artists! Keep up the good job!
The guy with the star is Elvin Bishop, excellent guitarist don't you think. Mickey's voice is so pure and dead on, the right frequency one might say. Thanks B.P.👍
I was 12 when this song released. 12 and listening to a transistor radio under my pillow at night, lol. This is STILL one of my favs from that era. Pure talent!
Bishop made an impression on album-oriented rock FM radio stations with "Travelin' Shoes" in 1975 but, a year later, in 1976, Bishop released his most memorable single, "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," which peaked at No. 3 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (and No. 34 in the UK Singles Chart).
"... the singer is dressed like a mechanic" Hahaha!! That's hilarious! Believe it or not, jumpsuits like that were actually very fashionable for a minute during the early 70s. What a time to be alive, LOL!
Elvin Bishop had a bit part in "Animal House" as the guitar player on the staircase in the frat house, John Belusi listened to him then took the guitar and bashed it against the wall and gave it back to him.
I was 10 years old when this dropped I absolutely loved this song!! It had tons of airplay on the radio! I used to sing it all the time and rollerskate all day in the summer...LOL!
OMG this brings me back to June 1976. Some friends & I went to see them in Bham AL. One of them somehow finagled backstage passes, and we spent the whole concert just offstage. I still have my nametag that the Cate Bros (opening act) gave me. Love love love this song!
I was at that show at Boutwell. Had a pre-concert meat and three dinner at Fife's a few blocks away. I think the Cate Bros. were part of the 2nd incarnation of The Band, post-Robbie R.
As a child born in the 60s and mostly grew up in the 70s, I thought Mickey Thomas' name was Elvin Bishop for the longest time. When he joined Jefferson Starship and I heard that his name was Mickey Thomas, I still thought it was a different dude that looked and sounded exactly like "Elvin" I didn't learn until much later that it really was the same dude.
Now you're diving into the world of Southern Rock. You still want to check out some of the other Southern rockers. Black Oak Arkansas, Wet Willie, Thirty Eight Special, Molly Hatchet (**), Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Marshall Tucker Band (**) and especially Blackfoot
This song is the story of my late teenage life...I was a player and then I saw this girl one day that took my breath away, One thing lead to another and on August 15, 1980 , three and a half years after we first became a couple, we were married (Yup, I am writing this comment on the eve of our 44th anniversary). Everything you related about you and your wife... I resemble completely (except we have THREE daughters). I love the song and I think Mickey Thomas vocals are fantastic... not to mention Elvin Bishop's guitar work. Thanks for bringing this song and, as always, absolutely great reaction from my man, Black Pegasus. You're the best out there!
Micky Thomas is very underrated he still tours today and he still can belt out them notes, listen to starship song called Jane he comes in hot and goes the whole song in the atmosphere and out too guys great 🔥🌶️💯🧨
A couple of different directions to go from here. Elvin Bishop was connected to Paul Butterfield (a blues harmonica player). Mickey Thomas and the drummer (Donny Baldwin) were both part of the band Jefferson Starship/Starship. This song is actually what caused Starship to ask Mickey to sing lead with them.
This was preformed on the Midnight Special all live! I've seen Elvin Bishop probably 10 times great concerts. Mickey Thomas left this band and went to Jefferson Starship. This band has some really good songs you need to did deeper into.
Midnight Special aired on ABC at midnight and simo cast on local FM station for stereo it was a home event for the first couple of years they showed all the greats.
Oh man, CLASSIC R&R from the 70's! The best part is this looks like it was filmed from the Midnight Special. My brother and I were watching American bandstand back in the 70s and we saw Elvin Bishop play this song and we instantly fell in love with it. We went right out and bought this album. Mickey Thomas’s voice is pure magic.
In the summer of '74, I went to a concert in Evansville which was in the middle of the week. The lineup was Reo Speedwagon, Elvin Bishop, and the Allman Brothers. It was an absolutely a great show by every performer.
