That is Mike Hucknall. He wrote this when he was 17. This was recorded when he was 25. Not Irish, British, from Manchester, UK. The Red in the group's name is because he was a huge Manchester United Football (soccer) fan. You have got to see him perform this live. He sounds exactly the same live, even into his 50's. Talented, soulful man.

In a nutshell, he spent his life looking for his mom who abandoned him as a small child. He did find her, she basically said: I gave you up because I didn't want you in my life. I still don't, & shut the door. Now read the lyrics & you begin to understand the pain & heartbreak in his voice as he sings this song.
Strangled by the wishes of pater
Hoping for the arms of mater
Get to me the sooner or later
    Holding back the years
Chance for me to escape from all I've known
    Holding back the tears
    Cause nothing here has grown
    I've wasted all my tears
    Wasted all those years
And nothing had the chance to be good

As someone who's got about 10yrs on you BP, I did grow up listening to quite a few artists you have been reacting to. So I have stepped out of my "comfort zone" of music to listen to genres I normally wouldn't and it's all thanks to inspiring people like you ❤
