You can take two levels in warlock, take the armor of shadows feat for being able to cast mage armor without using a spell slot (abjuration spell), and flip between armor and clothing for being able to repeatedly cast mage armor for free and stack your ward count for free.
To be honest, this is a lame way to play the game, and not that useful. If you're upcasting Armor of Agathis & using Warding Bond, or some other way of getting resistance (Blade Ward, Armor, etc), you have a good amount of ward stacks already with great defense. You can cast an alteration spell in combat and be at full or mostly full stacks. That means you just need 1 level in Sorc, though I'd also get 1 level in Tempest Cleric at some point for the reflection damage & create water spell. Until then, just enjoy the extra tankiness and be a wizard, Harry.
it is not lame but very smart... -_- it is made for this intentions actually... mage armor act as a ritual spell even in combat can cast for free! @@seanmcgrady8688

I would suggest white dragon sorc level 1 instead of warlock multi class, because it also gives you armor of agathys, but doesn’t slow down your spell circle progression and gives you CON proficiency I builded Gale this way, enemies just never attacked him because AI understand that this is pointless - they would die before they can pierce his protection

I started to play abjuration wizard, following this guide (this is the first time a play this game) I'm already regretting it a little, as it's very weak in the early game. Multicalssing this early doesn't have it's benefits yet, as i don't have good abjuration spells, nore high level spellslots to upcast, because i'm ignoring wizard levels. This also means i can't get my Arcane ward to reach higher charges. So it doesn't sync very well with Armour of Agathys. For startes i recommand waiting with multicalssing until lvl 5-6. Other then that, this is going to be very powerful one i reach higher levels.
Try getting the head band of intellect. I specd constitution like a MF, then wisdom, gave 10 in intellect and put the headband on. Then when I reach level 6 or 7, I respec again out of head and and adjust the stats again. I’ve had a lot of luck. My wizard is tanky AF and can actually hit. I’ve also got spell sparkler and the necklace that gives an extra missile charge. All this by level 4/5…
Try starting with white dragon sorcerer for armor of agathys on level 1 plus higher AC plus shield for bad moments. Then either directly into wizard or via one level of war cleric for all weapons, all armor, and more cool abjuration spells. Then the rest should be abjuration wizard. You'll only have your ward from level 4 onwards, which is a little late, but armor of agathys will carry you for a bit until there. I combined this with high str and the leap spell on level 1 (next to shield) for a nice melee caster

Didn't they change Arcane Ward with the latest spell?
Think I read something like that.🤔
Used a similar build for my tactician play thru and it was great, is there any reason to take warlock over white draconic sorc for armor of agathys?
Draconic sorcerer sets your base AC to 13 and if you have haste you'd have around 15 AC which is not that great for a retaliation build.
