  • In this Baldur’s Gate 3 video we’re going to talk about the most underrated spells that are deceptively better than you might think, with a ton more functionality and applications than you’d suspect, or just way stronger than you might estimate at first glance.

    *Longstrider
First up is Longstrider. This spell increases the move speed of a character by 3 meters until a long rest. 3 meters might not sound like a lot, but the standard move speed is 9 meters, which means this increases the amount of distance you can cover by a third - which is huge! And it’s an even bigger deal if you’re a race with short legs like a gnome, dwarf, or halfling. What’s also great about this spell is that it doesn’t require concentration, so you don’t have to worry about losing concentration or taking up that concentration spell slot. Not only that, but because Longstrider is a ritual spell if you cast it outside of combat it doesn’t use up a spell slot, meaning you can cast it as many times as you want without sacrificing other spell slots, allowing your entire party to move more each turn. So you’ve got nothing to lose, and 33% more movespeed to gain.
    Magic Missile
Next up is Magic Missile. Magic Missile is a damaging spell that fires off 3 missiles and each missile can be sent at 3 different targets or all 3 on the same if you want. This spell is extremely flexible for one because you can use it to finish off a monster without overkilling it if it has low health, and send the other 2 missiles to other targets. You can also upcast this spell to increase the missile count. Second, Magic Missile always hits your target, whether it needs to fly up down left or right, whether you’re disadvantaged or blind, magic missile always lands. And Third, magic missile can turn corners and bend around obstacles to reach enemies. That means you don’t even need to have line of sight on a target to cast magic missile and hit them. And Fourth and most importantly, each missile will trigger a concentration saving throw on the target, so it’s excellent at interrupting enemy spells that require concentration. These spells are usually really powerful too, making Magic Missile a real lifesaver, especially since you can send all your missiles at a single target, almost guaranteeing that you’re breaking their concentration.
    Disguise Self
Next up is Disguise Self. This spell allows you to magically change all aspects of your appearance. This spell is powerful for a couple reasons. One, it allows you to disguise yourself and then steal, pickpocket, and perform other criminal acts and when you’ve had your fill, you can end your disguise and your character’s reputation isn’t hurt because you were disguised. Your reputation is important because if you do enough criminal acts, guards will turn hostile towards you, throw you in jail, or depending on your dialog choices turn into a battle that might be difficult to win. Second, if you do end up slaying a humanoid that you want to use speak with the dead on, they won’t want to talk to the person who killed them, but if you turn off your disguise and use speak with the dead, you’ll have better results - and vice versa. Third, Disguise self can also give you different dialog options. Like in our race picking video if you’re a Drow you have different dialog options than a non-drow. The same goes for other races too, depending on the circumstances, so Disguise Self can give you more options than you would have otherwise when it comes to dialog. Fourth, you can actually use Disguise Self to change your race to unlock weapon bonuses. For example, you might find a weapon that only gives you a certain bonus if you’re Githyanki - using Disguise Self to turn into a Githyanki will unlock that item’s bonus power for you. Fifth, If you're a party of medium characters, Disguise Self can change you to a small sized character and allow you to creep through small holes or tunnels. And what’s amazing about Disguise Self is that it’s also a ritual spell that does not use up a spell slot when you use it outside of combat, and lasts until long rest, so this is really such a useful spell that can be used in a massive number of scenarios.
    Command
Next up is Command. Command is one of the strongest and most flexible spells in the game, and it’s a level 1 spell. Command can be used to make a creature Flee, Move Closer, Freeze, Drop to the ground or Drop their Weapon. Of course, this is incredibly powerful to make a creature drop their weapon - many players use this on Commander Zhalk when escaping the Nautiloid to get his flaming greatsword called the Everburn Blade.

It's not supposed to do most of those things, but I can understand if the game simplifies things by not differentiating between interactions based on perception vs. physical presence. Illusions aren't supposed to have any physical interaction and shouldn't set off traps, tripwires, mines, etc. People, animals, and to some extent non-living things like turrets that are enchanted to detect things magically can be tricked into reacting by an illusion, but a physical trigger shouldn't be tripped by an illusion. But if the game engine can be tricked, abuse it.

i do this on my sorcerer. dipping 2 cleric on a sorcerer with 10 starting wisdom nets you 2 spells as a cleric that you can grab with both create water and sanctuary, neither of which care about how high your wisdom is. you can on turn one, twin a haste on you or your teammates, then bonus action sanctuary on yourself to protect yourself for a minimum of 1 turn. next turn if you hasted yourself, you can create water + chromatic orb or lightning bolt or ice storm for max damage with a tempest cleric subspec. if you didnt haste yourself, you can still do the combo so long as you're willing to quicken one of those two spells. its a pretty nasty combo of what you can do with that multiclass. another multi that can also pull this off is a devotion paladin/sorcerer as well.

I like to use it as cover for my ranged characters by having them poke out of it when attacking, then jumping back in before ending their turn. IMHO, Darkness (the spell) is a waste. In most cases the radius is too large so it provides a bunch of added negatives - and does so for about one round because that's when the enemies will run out. Using that same action, or better yet one attack of a character with multiple to pop an arrow of darkness provides the same benefits more often than not. In a more confined radius meaning you're not blocking off a bunch of extra terrain causing potential issues.
Ironically, the primary instance where Darkness' radius is of better use than the smaller radius arrow of darkness are the instances where a well placed fog cloud will do the job just the same. Which is to block line of sight from afar (think - the Zentarim hideout - blocking their looking from seeing and get your entire party past if you stole the flask and now they're mad).
Unless you can lock down someone in darkness they rarely stay inside of it. So typically you get one maybe two rounds of real use if you intend to use it on anyone *inside* and not to block ranged attackers/anti-stealth LOS.

Another extra perk of magic missile, every missile counts as a separate spell hit for The Spellsparkler quarterstaff. Which means that once you reach the maximum lightning charges (which is very easy when upcasting magic missiles, specially if doing it multiple times in the same turn), the next missile will deal massive damage. On higher levels it's easy to obliterate enemies just by using this interaction. The only issue is that, if you are targeting multiple enemies, you can't reliably choose which one will eat the blast, as the missiles don't usually follow the order in which you chose the targets.

The problem with D&D 5e's action economy is that you really have to weigh whether it's worth using your action to buff/debuff an ally/enemy, cast a save or suck spell on an enemy, or just throw a big fireball to damage down the enemies instead. Usually, damage is the way to go because dead enemies means fewer enemy actions being used against your party. And I think BG3 makes this even more in the fireball's favor when you can see the enemy's health.

Utility spells and having a tactical position is better in this game than straight damage. Setting up a corridor of web or other difficult terrain leading to a door or high elevation will slow the enemy melee users approach by multiple turns. Darkness can be cast on your party so they can step out, attack from range, then step back in and be untargetable by ranged enemies. If you have a melee damage character on the same initiative as a cleric you can have the damage dealer go all out and then have the cleric cast sanctuary on them so they're safe to go again next turn. There are so many spells and abilities that are better than just damage dealing ones. You're not always going to be able to get all your enemies in one place to fireball them, and sometimes fireball just low rolls on damage anyways.

    • @shmeebs387
      @shmeebs387 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@asturias0267 Pre-fight spells and bonus action spells like sanctuary and healing word are different (actually this game removes the D&D rule that says you can't cast two spells in one turn, so bonus action spells are even better in BG3 than tabletop D&D 5e). I'm talking about action economy after you're in initiative. Actions are like a currency. If the enemy has more actions per round than the player party, you're at a disadvantage. Removing actions from the enemy is the name of the game, and killing enemies is the most straightforward way to do that. Yes, there are other ways to do that like banishment, stun, paralyze effects, but typically if your ranged is hiding in darkness the enemy will just target someone else. Those enemy actions don't go to waste just because their preferred target is no longer available, maybe just waste one action to dash to another target.

Another spell I found surprisingly useful on Eldritch Knight (and probably Paladins/Melee Rangers too) was Expeditious Retreat. I never gave this spell much thought on Tabletop, but the fact it lasts potentially all day for 1 cast seemed crazy good in BG3, and since I was a lower INT build I didn't want spells that relied on attack rolls or saving throws. My Barbarian, Fighter, Warlock, and Rogue all had insane speed due to their class features, magic items and bonus action dashes, but my fighter would have absolutely fallen short were it not for this spell. I used a throwing build with the Lightning Jabber with a ring that gives an extra 1d4 Psychic damage while concentrating, and at this point deal ridiculous ranged damage, move fast as hell, and all while I'm wearing a shield and full plate.

This does depend on the DC and your static bonus, if you can't beat the DC on less than a 20, the bonus to the roll may actually be better than your extra shot at a critical success
Easy example being a dc30 with +10 to your roll, normally you'd need a 20 to succeed, advantage gives you two chances, or two die faces, a +3 from a guidance roll means you can pass on a 17, 18, 19, or 20, giving you 4 die faces that will pass

If you use it on a character with the buff that makes illithid powers bonus actions, you can use the attack every turn, which is pretty decent damage and healing for not costing a spell slot and automatically scaling with your class's spell modifier.
