The Flint crisis is supposed to be funded by local taxes, not Federal, so guess what? Bombs have nothing to do with this. This is local government fucking up as usual. The Feds don't supply my clean drinking water quality in Arizona, our local water district through taxes takes care of that.
Watching this in 2024 to check in on the situation. 8 years later and there are still reports of issues. How has it not been fixed and why is all the money being exported for war? Where is the humanity?!?!
This happen in my town , in fact since I moved away I have no clue if it was managed. I lived with that for over a year and I was like I can't take this anymore. It would come and go but when it happen it lasted for 2 days. You couldn't shower or anything. It made my hair fall out (not bald but it weakened the hair) , it destroyed my skin & it made us very sick. This becoming an serious issue in our country.
For clarification, at 1:47 she says 'they hired an emergency manager' ... the 'they' is not the city, but instead the state ... and it was an appointment. EDIT: As noted by @TELEVISIONARCHIVES the city council did vote to change the water over from Detroit water (DWSD) to another, unfinished water supply (KWA), and thought that their local treatment plant could handle the Flint River water between the shut off of one and the start up of the other. What the emergency manager did was block the city government from switching back once it was clear there was a problem.
+SubHek No they weren't...they were getting their water from Detroit who had a handle on how to treat the type of water that was being delivered via the old infrastructure. When Detroit jacked the rate up to a price that Flint couldn't afford, the Flint River was the fallback option. Nobody was trying to privatize water in the PENINSULA of Michigan...the one surrounded by fresh water...five lakes in total.
+SubHek It "sucks balls" when someone who makes a good assertion is waist deep in vitriol because it eats away at their point (no pun intended). It makes it rather hard to say "This guy 'as a point". If you're right keep it classy man so people can actually listen to you seriously.

Did they mention people are still getting their water bills....I think the Governor and his family should be made to live in this area and see how his wife likes getting that out of her tapwater.
+Ruben van Lenningh Dutch companies are definitely doing business in the great lakes region. i know they are involved in the wind farms coming on lake erie.
The water system in Michigan is one of the finest in the world. This happened because they wanted to save money so the governor of our state could prove you can run goverment like a business. FYI the high lead levels in Michigan water are from bad pipes in older commuintys it's not in the water here in Detroit area or Detroit water and sewage authority ( were Flint was and is again getting it's water for 50 years) because they treat the water before it goes through old pippes. I live in the suburbs were all our pippes are newer and fine.
Rock on, Erin. Here in Illinois, we were able to make enough noise that we brought together the power of the State and prevented PCBs and other equally nasty stuff from being dumped over our aquifer. It was one of those rare cases where I was proud of our government and the folks involved. The public outrage in Flint is more than a violation of trust. Beyond that, it questions the ineptitude of the people we've elected (or appointed) to decide our collective fates. "You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie," comes to mind.
We did many researchers and their water is still polluted!!!! It’s almost 2021 and the problem was not solved at all. They should invite her again, bring back the discussion and give updates 🙏. People are still getting sick (or sicker :(
+Shwagg Krumb I don't think 1.5% is a huge portion. When you factor the time and effort it seems like $20,000,000 would have been more appropriate. After all, the firm got $133,600,000, she got $2,000,000.
Lead pipes can be 100 years old and STILL in use! They need to be taken out of every water system. City and Town have know this for years, but most of them don't have the funds to replace them, and taxpayers don't want their taxes to go up!
People should vote for abolishing single-family-house zoning. Cities cannot provide anything for sprawled-out suburbs, there's just not enough tax basis. Nowhere outside of North America do people live in cities made for cars, it's incredibly stupid.
Thanks from Louisiana....my husband is an 18 wheeler driver. He saw places with overflowing sewage and femanine sanitary products on ground .... going into our water table . Disgusting. Then major hurricane no wonder we all have been sick here
Congratulations to Julia Roberts for winning an Oscar...but congratulations to this amazing human being Erin Brockovich for actually being Erin Brockovich....this woman is a whirlwind on another level.
I live in a country notorious for its poor water we all either boil our water or put special filters in our homes. Also, there is the possibility to buy filtered water for cooking and drinking. And very sadly it is a planetary crisis. I imagine Erin has been very busy considering this interview was 7 years ago!!
+Isaac Diaz b/c there is no media anymore, not much. just corporate or conservative bull and murder stories. maybe you have a community investigator type at the local news that you could get on the story?
+Isaac Diaz If you look online you can also find out that people are having their hair fall out as well. There were several other side effects as well, including people, especially kids, getting really sick. If I were in America I would be voting for Bernie Sanders, yet for some reason it seems like a large number of people in the US don't care and are voting for people like Trump, despite "running the government like a business" being to blame for things like this.
A big problem with what she said about the city hiring the EM. That is false!!! The EM was forced upon the city by the Governor of Michigan. This same Governor said he would fix it and own up to the decision that switched us to use the river. Now the river water was not the problem. The problem was not treating that water properly with the correct chemicals. The Flint river water was safe and still is safe to be used. Trouble with Flint's water woes actually started back in 2012. With things popping up in the ancient supply lines coming out of Detroit. There is so much more to this mystery than we will ever know. We still don't have drinkable water coming out of our taps here in Flint.
Problem has been resolved, now the lawyers dance. In January 2021, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and other officials were charged with many felonies for their role in this shit
This is not a partisan issue. Although the Republican governer can claim most of the blame, the recovery should have no debate. Republicans and Democrats agree, this needs to be corrected and the victims cared for. I don't care who is to blame honestly, and I don't care which party finds the solution. It just needs to be fixed, and if there was an ever an issue that Democrats and Republicans could agree on, it should be this.
I felt the same way, until today when it was revealed that the governor lied that the water was safe last January, while simultaneously sending purified water to state workers in the city of Flint so they wouldn't have to use the lead-contaminated water. That's pretty fucked.
ThePanicPuppet I didn't deny that governer Snyder is to blame, and I would like him to resign. My point was that both parties agree that this needs to be fixed, and we should focus on the relief effort.
+George Mason quit this "both sides are to blame" bullshit. These infrastructure issues constantly happen in conservative areas, not because of freak accidents or natural occurrences, but because conservatives believe in "cutting back" on government money, even at the cost of health and safety. Quit the bullshit. Everyone knows who's to blame.
They were not lead pipes. but the sections were held together with lead solder. The $100 a day they saved was the cost of the chemicals that coat the pipes to prevent the lead from the solder to leech into the water. The corrosive water from the Flint River disolved that coating because they stopped using those chemicals, to save that $100 a day.
Flint. That's such a great name for a disaster to happen. When they named it they probably said to someone "there's probably gonna be like a drought, or a water contamination here sometime", and they said "why?" and the founders said "cause it's named Flint! What else is ever gonna happen here?"
+Valter Östberg If you ever get into esoteric symbology the name provide far to much information. Just look up the first woman to be cured with ZMAP for EBOLA(her name Dr. WritEBOL only thing her name is missing is the A for it to say directly W or double you rit EBOL which means to hex EBOL which means she should know or have the cure to Ebola). If it where like the president names like Clinton or Bush which both mean to cheat/fishy esoterically this is why Jesus/Messiah is back as Pisces which is represented by 2 fish which don't worry 2 fish means to hex fish/cheaters/people rigging your environment from the top down like CLINTON(which means cunt on or to set a cheat/help with what the architect in the Matrix calls the remainder of unbalance equation=no justice because your lives are being rigged from the top down you don't really have choice but you probably don't know how pointed my statement is) you see it in BUSH another fishy name along with FISHER & HAMILL funny how both of their last names in real life mean the same thing. The fishy situation this World is in is also called the curse of HAM which is what Egypt was first called the land of HAM until the curse of HAM by NOAH(you see this in Heroes Reborn if you watch it let me know I can point you to things that they should not have known to put in a tv show especially when I can specifically point to where they got their information in real time just like the names they picked for characters).
The USA has (since the 80's) taken the trickle down effect and ever since then our infrastructure has been neglected due to not getting taxes from the rich. It isn't a coincidence that all these things are happening around the same time. All the years of not having proper level of technicians, inspectors, equipment, repaired/maintained, not replacing pipes, not replacing old electrical grids, etc. Please for the love of the USA start taxing the rick and higher the proper staff to rebuild our now destroyed infrastructure.
I was actually JUST thinking about Erin when this Flint Water crisis blew up more in the news (Al Jazeera reported it looong ago.) I actually read her autobiography. She's a tough woman. Side note, her boyfriend at the time she cracked the case (the one who was portrayed as this gentle loving bike rider) was not such a good guy. He was actually being paid to babysit her kids and he wanted a shitload of money for the rights to portray him and then complained he wasn't portrayed well. I think he sued her too.
Thanks Erin. Houston Texas water here Alief. Still awful. I'm so I'LL Dr refused to HELP me. Thanks Erin. Water protector. Love Your Book. Superman is Not coming to Save you.
Dr Mona Hanna Attisha is the name of that local hero. Worked in the same hospital as her. www.cfgf.org/cfgf/GoodWork/FlintArea/WaterCrisis/tabid/855/Default.aspx is the link for donations.
people can also distill their water several times and toss in some sodium hydroxydes or peroxides to make some of the metals precipitate for quick results, than filtrate, make sure the pH is neutral and all the peroxides are gone before using it. A third pretty safe solution is to freeze water vapor from the air take a big surface area bath tubb or kids swimming pool. Hang over it some cooling elements of an old refrigirator (make sure the freezing surfaces are clean) and let the water vapors from the tubb/pool evaporate and freeze to the cooling elements of the refirgirator. That ice is freshwater without any metal (!)-contaminants. If how ever there are other volatile contaminiations in the water (like ammonium, methanol, HS - hydrosulfide (rotten egss smell)) they may NOT get out by this method, depending on the contanimants.
Listen to what Erin said. Water changes. From mud puddle to the ocean, each body of water, including two ponds next to each other will have a different mineral and chemical identification unique as a fingerprint. You just can't reroute water...
My word. Bravo Erin Brockovich ------sadly you lost me at the Red Cross endorsement. Otherwise --press on people. We must protect our waterways . . . ....
the 32 people that clicked a thumbs down - - - do you not like someone alerting us of poison water that is affecting millions? What is it that you are disagreeing with, I'm curious.
I think the water crisis in Detroit is more important to shine light on. They're making their citizens pay their water bills and in refusing to do so are being threaten to have their children taken away.
I know that she fought for people who were dying of Cancer. She said she believed that people were getting sick because the water in their town was contaminated. That’s been her cause. I worked in a grocery store that she frequents and I noticed that she would always buy cigarettes. I always wondered why someone who was concerned about people dying of cancer would be smoking. I just find it a little hypocritical.
The real question is whether the people in charge of the switchover to river water suspected it might cause this problem, or if the horrible lack of education in this country has led to another disaster that would be avoided in any other 1st world nation.
These things are why the FEDERAL RESERVE ACT absolutely *NEEDS* to be abolished. Because of it, no state or local jurisdiction is able to create the money it needs to properly build and repair infrastructure. I am willing to bet that if state and local governments were able to create money out of thin air to pay for local infrastructure projects, places like FLINT, MICHIGAN would have clean water. But NO... Only a private bank is allowed to create money out of thin air and then sell that money to the United States at interest.
This lady's strength, intelligence and efforts are phenomonal.
very professional. straight to the point and no fluff or BS.
Great segment. Erin makes it very easy to understand what is occurring.
What a great woman, they should make a movie about her...
They'd probably get nominated for an Oscar, maybe even win...
They should find an actress like Julia Roberts to star in the movie
+matt1523 They should get Steven Soderbergh to direct. He'd probably get a nomination with this material.
+hithere327 I think the movie would need some strong supporting male characters who do not steal the scene from her. Actors like Albert Finney and Aaron Ackhart would fit perfectly.

How’d it go?
She just wrote a book last September titled: Superman's not coming, our national water crisis and what we the people can do about it. I was lucky enough to find it in the library. A lot of what she talks about here is in the book, in detail. I recommend getting your hands on it (or at least looking up superfund sites). These infrastructure issues constantly happen in conservative areas, not because of freak accidents or natural occurrences, but because conservatives believe in "cutting back" on government money, even at the cost of health and safety. Quit the bullshit. Everyone knows who's to blame.
Ugly Coyote I didn't say both sides are to blame. Quit making assumptions before you comment.
+monokhem the party of "fiscal responsibility"
I don't know why, but I was waiting for Julia Roberts to walk out.
She's amazing.
it's not just Flint... wake up!
Pretty sure she said that...
This was aired 4 years ago, and this is still happening in Flint...
And your government cares about you
She seems emotionally tired, must be unbelievable to have to deal with issues like this over and over.
She is a national treasure
They were not lead pipes. but the sections were held together with lead solder. The $100 a day they saved was the cost of the chemicals that coat the pipes to prevent the lead from the solder to leech into the water. The corrosive water from the Flint River disolved that coating because they stopped using those chemicals, to save that $100 a day.
I remember reading online that the government has been replacing pipes in many cities across the country and I know my city is safe.
Flint. That's such a great name for a disaster to happen. When they named it they probably said to someone "there's probably gonna be like a drought, or a water contamination here sometime", and they said "why?" and the founders said "cause it's named Flint! What else is ever gonna happen here?"
my parents almost named me Flint
my parents almost named me Flint
+Phyrexian Juggernaut Yeah but Phyrexian isnt such a good name either :P.
+Valter Östberg
Flint also lends it's name to the adjective 'Flinty' which means firm and unyielding.
Flint makes Detroit look like a great place to live
Im glad our water here in Australia especially in Melbourne you can drink it
Just goes to prove you don’t need to be a lawyer to get the job done… in truth most are too corrupt
Thanks Erin. Houston Texas water here Alief. Still awful. I'm so I'LL Dr refused to HELP me. Thanks Erin. Water protector. Love Your Book. Superman is Not coming to Save you.
I'm happy I was named after this woman :)
Dr Mona Hanna Attisha is the name of that local hero. Worked in the same hospital as her. www.cfgf.org/cfgf/GoodWork/FlintArea/WaterCrisis/tabid/855/Default.aspx is the link for donations.
The sad thing is none of this was necessary, also that the companies that are polluting are NOT held accountable.
people can also distill their water several times and toss in some sodium hydroxydes or peroxides to make some of the metals precipitate for quick results, than filtrate, make sure the pH is neutral and all the peroxides are gone before using it.
I started drinking, only, bottled spring water by the gallon starting in... 2013. Until I got to the Nashville Mission at the end of 2016.
Bring her on to talk about East Palestine, Ohio.
My word. Bravo Erin Brockovich ------sadly you lost me at the Red Cross endorsement. Otherwise --press on people. We must protect our waterways . . . ....
I never saw the movie about her, but that woman is great.
I'm a retired truck driver and I never drank the water
anywhere around this country for this very reason.......
the 32 people that clicked a thumbs down - - - do you not like someone alerting us of poison water that is affecting millions? What is it that you are disagreeing with, I'm curious.
Damn, that sucks. Hope all goes well with that.
Milwaukee WI has the same problem. I was wondering if the lead levels were being reflected in the blood tests of children.
Those filters aren't strong enough, lead still comes through i heard..
They have to take readings all the time. How is this not known?
Where is Erin Brokovich? Everyone forgot about Flint.. And people are STILL suffering!!
its so hard to filter at the water plant. and those pipes can be fixed with services that use robots to spray a new layer at least temporarily
