Actually tried the Goldwing and found it to be just as uncomfortable as the BMW R18TC, for exactly the same reason. The jugs hanging out of the side and lack of legroom. Also the Goldwing is a bit cramped for a fellow over 6’3” tall. So I bought an Indian Challenger Dark Horse with a Tour Pack, still have my Beemer R1250R, need to have options y’know.

    Hi Andy,
As a 2021 DCT Goldwing Tour owner for the last couple of years I personally found this video quite entertaining, especially the backroad clip at the end, this really highlights the abilities of the bike and shows just how much fun they can be to ride.
Yes the bike is heavy but the pros far outweigh the cons, without doubt this is the best bike I’ve ever owned!

I've ridden the first model and the old and new models of Goldwing and found they are absolutely great machines especially the new models. Goldwings aren't for everyone figuring in the cost and garage space. However, I've not met anyone in the 47 years that the Goldwing has been around who owned one or has ridden one for more than a few minutes that did not have a high opinion of them.

Had a 1984, 1988, 1995, GoldWing. Ridden a 2006 GW at a Honda demo day. Switched to sport touring with a 2005 ST1300 (new) and rode it 50K miles in five seasons. Switched to Yamaha FJR1300. Have owned 3 of those now. Currently on a 2020.
Just tried a new Gen 6 GW this week thinking maybe I’d go back to a GW. They look so good. I’ll give it has a silky smooth engine and good torque in “sport” mode, Cadillac smooth ride. But sorry, still to big (I don’t have a passenger) and not sporty enough for me. Closed down that idea of going back to a GW in my mid 50’s. I’ll stick with sport touring. I can cross the continent no problem on it and do 800 mile days no problem. No GW for me.

You never heard the phrase......."I'd rather push my harley than ride a honda?" Many still can't get past what the Japanese did 80 years ago or so. Another lifetime and a few generations ago. The same for German cars. I know some who hate VW because of the germans. Years ago I worked at a shop and the boss soon hated me when he found out I drove a 75 VW bug. He was a prisoner of war for a short time and turned against me quickly. I quit a few days later.

You are a great ambassador for motorcycling and the content your produce is top notch. While I agree about some bike seeming to have a stigma, I think that is mostly from people who don't have a lot of real world experience in the world of bikes. In the USA there is a common perception among non-riders that Harley owners in general hate anything that isn't H-D. Almost everyone I know, including myself, who owns a Harley also owns/ has owned other brands. At the Harley events I've attended talk was about bikes. Nobody was standing around bashing other brands. Small sample size but IMO riders are a pretty nuanced group and most of us are just grateful for the moments when we get to be on the road. Ride safe and enjoy your Goldwing. It is a cool machine.

They can get out of shape when pushed hard. One of the places Honda went cheap was the suspension.
With no preload up front and only 1980's single point damping front / back and preload out back, it's a hack. The thing that saves it is the multilink and it's geometry up front. And the geometry of the Pro Arm out back. If Honda had screwed up the geometry, current Wing would be no more than a over priced honey wagon.

I recently had a demo on a Goldwing Tour; parked up after 30 mins riding, as I got off the bike someone walked past and I heard him say 'its a two wheeled car' 🙂 However, after just 100m of riding the bike I loved it, so much so I've traded my 1250GS for a new Goldwing Tour (initially I liked the bagger version but fell in love with the Tour after riding it). I get my new Goldwing Tour at the end of August, I can't wait. My mates are already teasing me about being a Goldwing owner. Oh well after being a GS owner (three GS bikes over ~20yrs) I have thick skin 🙂 On a positive note, I borrowed the demo bike for 24 hours, during that time I had more people come over to look at the Goldwing and say good things (non-biker normal folk) than I have had with any bike. Generally nobody even notices my GS and nobody has every said my GS is beautiful. Thank goodness I didn't order the new GSA; people would be crossing the road to avoid coming near it.

Hello from Denver, Colorado. I agree 1,000%! Been riding Honda's (dirt & street) for 50 years. Sold a '13 GW F6B. Got a white 2018 DCT tour. OMG, what a bike! Debated on the DCT, but got it and after 2-3 miles I will never go back tom a clutch. I ride the paved mountain 2-lane twisties here in Colorado, and the low CG + gobs of torque make it the bomb! Brakes rip your face off, and the suspension is off the charts! Only "issue" is slow-speed maneuvers are harder w the DCT, vs "old school" feathering the clutch, brakes, and fuel. Never had the issue, but my Honda mechanic said the clutch systems in the DCT don't like slow-speeds and can fail. No bike is perfect, right?

Many Wingers consider yours to be the best gen Goldwing ever built. In many ways your 5th gen is a better over all bike. While it is larger and heavy as hell and in many ways was out of date style wise when it came out. And it does have old tech suspension. The forks can be kitted out and a much better rear shock and spring combo can be fitted. You can truly make the suspension great! And it does have the better engine. The two valve engine is much quieter and very tunable. It is pre eurotrash4/5 and can be tuned very high and never over stress it. It has steel sleeves in the cylinders, cams are shim and bucket, better rod and main bearing setup, better piston rings and no DCT. Just a simple tune with no exhaust or intake mods is good for 20 to 25 hp. And it goes up from there with cams and finally exhaust and intake mods. With exhaust and intake modes being the least bang for your buck. Your not missing anything by having a 5th gen at all.

Wow, my first gl was also in 1980. a 1976 gl 1000 canary yellow. loved it and put about 40,000 in about 2 years riding. It was my main transportation. Only hated the 4 carbs. thought about building a 4 into 1 intake like a VW engine port but I did not have the shop or equipment to do it. I would love EFI, hate carbs. But I've rebuilt them all. Just more tedious.

Andy, I love the look of the Goldwing and would like to own one, unfortunately buying one would put a very big dent in our savings, and I am sure my wife who doesn't share my passion for bikes as Mrs Flyer does would have something to say about that.
As I am a pensioner with doggy knees and ankles I am not sure I could move it about with confidence and that would be my only gripe about the bike. I just about manage my Triumph Speedmaster1200cc.

    Hi Andy,
I have ridden the non DCT 2018 Goldwing and while it is a FANTASTIC motorcycle, I have to disagree with you about it being the ultimate tourer. I prefer the new R1250RT (after renting one for two weeks in Colorado last year). Same super low center of gravity, a little lighter, easily more flickable, plenty of power and uber comfortable.
Keep the videos coming. I really enjoyed the CB1100 review. I've been debating getting one.

Thanks Mr. Flyer, I actually envy you being able and confident enough to ride such a large machine. I've been biking for many, many years but haven't ridden - let alone owed as many bikes as you, so If you say it's a great bike you'll get no argument from me. I don't understand why different groups sometimes distance themselves from others - We're all bikers (and road users) after all. I started on mopeds at 16 and one day the bike broke down on a rather quiet road and I was failing miserably to sort it when a group of large and hairy bikers on big and noisy bikes pulled up in their scruffy leathers and cut off denim jackets. They surrounded the bike and started "attacking" it pulling bits off and generally causing mayhem, but then they roared off and sitting in the lay-by was my little bike ticking over better than ever and ready to ride home. Since then I try not to judge on appearances :>)

I'm a video game player in addition to being a motorcycle rider (2020 CB500X) and whenever I see someone riding a Goldwing my first thought is that they've sufficiently levelled up to be able to ride one. I see it as kind of like getting a legendary item/mount in a game.
Also, whenever I come across Goldwing riders I get the impression that they're the happiest and most easy going riders out there. As the saying goes, "You meet the nicest people on a Honda"

I owned the very first Honda Goldwing GL1000 in the UK back in the early 70's, it was like riding a cloud compared to any other bike of that period, it was ground breaking, I blew the engine up after 3 months and had to trade it for another exact same new bike, people marvelled over it back then. I also own a BMW GSA now and likewise some people hate it for no other reason than they've seen other people on social media criticising it, I think it makes them feel like they know what they are talking about and makes them feel like a superior biker, I've been riding motorcycles since I was 16 back in 1972, after more than 50 years riding many different brands and styles of bikes I love all bikes, I couldn't care less for anyone else's negative opinions, I know what bikes are good for me and what I like and that's the ones I'll be riding and that's because I have a mind of my own.

1 The stupid panniers for the size of the bike.
2 Ground clearance, I've taken mine to Portugal twice now and playing on lovely continental roads you soon scrape the pegs..
3 I find the thing so comfortable that I wish the tank was a bit bigger so I didnt need to stop every 230 or so miles. That's never been a thing on any bike I've had before, always needed a break much sooner..

I agree absolutely with everything you say. I've had my DCT Goldwing Tour for 4 years now. I have done approaching 25000 miles on it so have got to know it pretty well. There are so many incorrect myths about them which, as you alluded to, are mostly spread by people who have never actually ridden one. The weight is absolutely no problem at all. I am 62 yrs old, been riding since 1978, stand 5' 6.5" tall (I sometimes claim an extra 1/2 inch at 5 "7" haha) and weigh in at 10.5 stone. I have no problems handling the bike in all circumstances including pushing it around backwards and forwards (the creep modes are very useful on slopes and rough surfaces though) and putting it on and off the centre stand. It is all down to correct technique not strength. IMO if you find the bike too heavy it isn't because it is but rather because you just ain't doing it right. Currently I have three other bikes (1976 Goldwing K1, 1979 CBX1000Z and a little CB175) and have ridden many other big bikes of numerous manufacturers, my last modern one being a Pan European. I find the new Goldwing is actually easier to manage than most of those other big bikes (exception being my two old FJ1200s) because of the centralised mass and the ergonomics suit quite small people, i.e. I am not stretching to reach anything, including the ground. Also some people talk down the DCT. I was sceptical at first and initially thought I'd made a mistake opting for it. But after riding with it for a couple of thousand miles or so and fully sussing out how to use it all to best advantage I realised just how good it really is. A brief test ride, especially on a bike with low miles and not properly bedded in, isn't enough time to familiarise with it properly and can actually create a false impression if you've never ridden with it before and don't fully appreciate how it all works. All in all I love the bike and use it for everything from popping to the shops to full on long distance riding. I can't see myself parting with it for a long time to come. One other thing to say. Since I have had it I have not had one single fault. Not even a niggle. Just had to replace the usual consumables. It was expensive for sure but I certainly do not feel I've been ripped off. IMO, considering how well each of my bikes has lived up to my hopes and expectations, this Goldwing is the best bike I've ever owned by quite some margin.

Hi Andy, I bought a 2023 DCT base version in January after watching endless videos and was entranced by the new shape, now I have to state that I am an absolute fan of the old style VFRs having owned 3 during the 90's and racking up countless miles, the new GW reminds me of that old shape and definitely has some of that sport-tourer DNA, but here's the rub, I found because it handles extremely well it was coaxing me into riding a bit too sporty for it's mass namely coming into roundabouts and long curves, I kept catching my boot on the floor and sometimes wasn't actually sure I was going to get the thing hauled up in time, don't get me wrong I still love the look but I could see the potential for big bills later on, the other thing I found is I couldn't actually do any maintenance on it myself, shaft drive and fixed panniers were barriers I couldn't circumvent, I liked the weekly check of tyres and chain, but removing the back wheel seemed to me mission impossible when it came to tyre change, lastly because of the riding position with feet slightly forward my backside started to ache after a few hours as I wasn't supporting my weight with my thighs, I am a divorcee now so pillions were out, so in my opinion it's a great bike....for some, I've swopped mine and I'm waiting for an NT1100 DCT, cheers.

My wife and I test rode a 2018 when they first came out, but decided to stay with our aging 2007 BMW K1200LT for a few reasons:
    1. Too little luggage capacity. Simply not suitable for long distance two-up travel.
    2. Too little fuel capacity compared to its peers (BMWs mainly).
    3. Lousy factory navigation system.
    4. Too hard seats.
Now, the seat is easily fixed and an aftermarket nav system can be fitted. Corbin addressed the storage issues and Honda has more recently addressed the top trunk and rumor is they may address the side cases soon. The fuel capacity is not so easily rectified in the aftermarket. I am still looking for an LT replacement and BMW is no long an option for a number of reasons, but key being the nearest dealer is now 140 miles away after the closure of the one I bought my LT from and BMW has dropped service manuals for owners so doing one’s own maintenance and repair on new models will be difficult.
I am hopeful Honda will address the side case capacity per the rumor and I hope they will address the fuel capacity and add at least a gallon and they really should match the 1600 BMWs. I haven’t heard as many complaints recently about the nav system so maybe they have addressed that sufficiently with software updates.

I'm a convert to the gen6 Goldwing Tour this season... I don't believe I fit any stereotypical "Goldwing rider" mold and I'm blown away by the bike. I've been riding all my life and never have I rode a bike like the Wing. Its damn near perfect for the type of riding I do.. Which is fast pace touring, 2up(mostly) sticking to the back, secondary and country roads, with the occasional highway run if I have to make time. I have to admit(and get used to) the fact that a Goldwing is pretty vanilla. It doesn't have the cool factor or rawness of my previous Victory XC, but the Wing does everything better and in more comfort. So since I'm riding it and not showing it off....I really don't care 😉
