Sloths are a suborder of toothless mammals and are related to anteaters and armadillos. The three available scientific terms are used extensively in specialist publications, but the latter two are also used by other animal groups. Scientific name: Folivora. Daily sleep requirement: 15-18 hours. Speed: 0.27 km/h (maximum, in dangerous situations).
The species living today are rather small animals of the suborder, averaging 50 cm long and about 5 kg in weight. They mostly inhabit tropical rainforests in South and Central America, where they prefer to stay in the treetops and feed on leafy plant food. The sloths are known above all for their way of life hanging in the branches - with their back down -, their very slow movements and the long resting phases. The latter two traits are brought about by an extremely low metabolism resulting from the low-energy foliar diet.
Today's tree-dwelling sloths reach a total length of 42 to 80 cm and weigh between 2 and 11 kg. The head is very short, the face rather round. The small eyes are set wide apart but look ahead, the round nose is noticeably flattened, the ears are small and hidden in the fur. The tail exists only as a stub-like rudiment. Typically, the limbs are very long, the front longer than the rear, which is particularly evident in the three-toed sloths. The two modern genera differ in the number of visible fingers. Both groups have three toes on their hind legs. The fingers and toes carry large, sickle-shaped claws and are about the same length.
