I watched the documentary after your last video and fell in love with his work (and him a little as well)! I even felt some sort of pain when i realized he is no longer with us. I loved how he said he just makes colors work together, regardless of color theory. And he does! Thanks for introducing him to me Jackie and thanks for all your beautiful videos!💖🍀

Hi Jackie! I watched the Rex Ray documentary about a year ago after discovering him on Pinterest. Thank you Mr Magoo…seems like so much fun! I love cutting out shapes but the sticky process of gluing things down is what I enjoy less….a bit of an obstacle to collage…still trying to figure out what adhesive and gluing method will make it more enjoyable. I like how you use your brayer in this process process….does the medium wash off of it pretty easily?
Robin - I'm with you - I don't love the feeling of dried glue on my fingers. That is one of the reasons I love using a brayer. And yes, it cleans up easily! 🥰
I loved the tear drop piece you did in this video all aspects of it! I appreciate all your videos I learn a lot from you! Thank you! No judgments here!
Hi Jackie, Fran here 😊 Today’s video was a beautiful homage to Mr. Ray. Your third art piece reminded me of Henri Matisse’s collage artwork. I love cutting and tearing papers, I’ll definitely give this a try. I found the documentary very informative and interesting, thank you for sharing. I’m off looking for the book …
I agree with you, Roxy - I think his works on panel and canvas were definitely made with archival materials. His works on paper (the small ones) were not. 🥰
This process video was informative and validating. Trying to emulate another artist style is not easy (as I mentioned in my comment last week my experience)! But I think it’s worth trying because you learn so much. My mind has been just absolutely full of thoughts, ideas and inspiration since last week’s video and watching the Rex Ray Documentary numerous times. I painted/gel printed papers the past week (such a happy activity) in anticipation of this week’s video. I will be creating some Rex Ray/Jackie inspired collage post card size this time 😊

Hi Jackie, Loved this video! I see that you apply your medium with a brayer. Do you have to wash it off asap or can you wait to wash it off? Do you only use that specific brayer for medium? Thanks for everything. Sondra Borrie
Thank you, Sondra - I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Ideally, you would wash or at least wipe down the brayer. I did not 👀 - it dried to a gorgeous glossy finish overnight. I could continue to use it without removing the dried medium, but I won't. I love the quality of the rolled paint when squished between the rubber of the brayer and the paper. The dried medium makes it too "slick." and I don't get that same quality. I soak my brayers in Murphy's Oil Soap to remove any paints/mediums. I did a whole video on it here: th-cam.com/video/5N50vN657RQ/w-d-xo.html. Thanks for watching! 🥰
It's been such a JOY this morning to watch you create these collages, Jackie!! I love the colors in the "fussy cutting" one in particular ~ teals and oranges make my heart sing!! I've been so curious about what type of paper he used, it's almost like mineral paper? I've tried to find any mention anywhere online of the type of paper he used but can't find anything yet!! Of course I'm down for the workshop ~ can't wait!!! Deanna. xoxoxo
@@PaintedPaperStudio Yes, Jackie, I use it and love it!! I will send some in the next art supplies haul , which will be arriving soon ))) !!! When I watch Rex glue, apply and cut the paper he uses, it really looks like mineral paper to me. We will see!! xoxo
Hi Jackie, I've tried following the link to the documentary several times and it just takes me to an error page on your website. Do you have a link to the doc? Loving your videos, thanks for sharing.
I am so sorry about that - I am having a brand new website built, and currently that page is not available. However, here is the direct link to the documentary, and I think you'll love it! Please let me know 🥰 www.pbs.org/video/rex-ray-how-to-make-a-rex-ray-g0ko4d/
My good friend worked for MOMA in New York about thirty years ago, and he said that the preferred adhesive among virtually all artists was YES! Paste, if that helps you at all. My preferred glue sticks are UHU.
One trick to cutting paper with scissors is to make a continuous cut, feeding the paper into the scissors rather than pushing the scissors into the paper. Sorry I can't explain this in a better way.
Jackie I think you could be right re wallpaper paste. I think it may have been some type of lining paper as you would get a really crisp line cut from that but who knows. I’ve got all of Rex’s books and I love his art. Thankyou for this video.x ps. I’ve always thought he may have used photo paper too in his work. Just another thought.x
Hmmmmmm - interesting ideas Sasha. It could have been lining paper for sure. The photo paper idea could explain getting such crisp lines, but I don't know. I guess we'll just have to experiment! 🥰
Thanks for introducing us to Rex Ray, I will enjoy looking through his work. I really liked your printed papers some of the colour combinations were really 👌 my two fave collage/print artists at the moment are Paul Furneaux and Daniel Anselmi, check them out if you get a chance.😊
Hi, can i ask a question. I have been using mixed media paper 300gsm. Everytime i make collage on it the paper crumples so badly. Even when i try to flatten it afterward it still crinckles when i try to mount it. Do you have any advice please.
Hi Tracy, one thing I would suggest is to paint gesso on both sides of the paper before starting your collage. Give that a try and let me know if it fixes the problem. 🥰
I ADORE Rex Ray! I saw the documentary and he mentioned using resin on the final pieces. I’d caution about exposure to certain resins and inks because he died young of lymphoma. . .
Hi Dawn! Yes, his works on panel were finished with resin, and I also wonder if it caused/had an impact on his lymphoma. I've only used resin a couple of times, and I used a professional respirator to protect myself. 🥰
I have struggled with the same questions about cutting papers. I was amazed, as well, by his graceful cuts of “wet” papers. Also, his collage pieces don’t seem to buckle or stretch with glue. I have to wonder if he strengthened his papers with a medium before using them for actual paintings. ??
He might have, Dawn. In one part of the documentary he pulled a painted paper out of a tray with (what looked like) water in it. Maybe it was water, maybe he had some alum in it 🤷🏻♀️ I am going to have to investigate further. 🥰

Deanna. xoxoxo
Mineral paper - that's a fascinating idea Deanna. Have you ever used it? I would love to know your thoughts! 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio thanks so much Jackie! The link works for me so I'll watch it asap (I'm travelling for a couple of days).
I searched for hours to find out about the glue… never got a definitive answer!
I'm starting to hear some scuttlebutt, Nancy. As soon as I have more clarity, I'll share. 🥰
My good friend worked for MOMA in New York about thirty years ago, and he said that the preferred adhesive among virtually all artists was YES! Paste, if that helps you at all. My preferred glue sticks are UHU.
Many of the collage artists used Exacto knives. Some worked freehand, while others cut around (traced around) a cut-out cardboard shape.
It could also be wheat paste. The paper takes a lot of abuse, I wonder if it's wallpaper.
Thanks for introducing us to Rex Ray, I will enjoy looking through his work. I really liked your printed papers some of the colour combinations were really 👌 my two fave collage/print artists at the moment are Paul Furneaux and Daniel Anselmi, check them out if you get a chance.😊
* Running to check out these artists now * Thanks for the suggestions Alex! 🥰 EDIT: Omgosh, I love both of them, Alex!
Jackie...some of his shapes appeared to me as if they were wallpaper?
They might have been. I sure wish he were here to ask. ❤️🩹
He said he used thinned Rabbit Skin glue
Oh cool! Where did you see/hear that? It's been one of my primary questions 😍
