  • Why would you still want a sedan? The case for this most traditional of body styles seems to be losing steam with every new SUV you see, despite the mild resurgence we've seen in the last year or so here. That's except for one scenario. When performance and driving character are high on your list of priorities.
Now Volkswagen has been your go-to brand to fulfil this need for the longest time, especially if you've wanted an engaging car that won't break the bank or asks you for any real compromises. The Volkswagen Virtus GT is the latest in the line of this but Hyundai has had something to say about this lately. Especially with the new Hyundai Verna turbo.
The two are closely matched. Both are powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and a seven-speed DCT. They also happen to be very similar dimensionally and are the top variants in their line-ups priced closely. So which one do you pick? We tell you in this video where we talk about their performance, their efficiency, their interiors and much more.

Volkswagen has had traditionally better fuel economy than the Hyundais be it the jetta vs the elantra, vento turbo vs verna, polo tdi vs i20 diesel and so on. What’s so hard to understand?
On the handling front, the virtus and the slavia are a huge step down from the vento anyway.

He might be right for FE data. With turbos FE is extremely subjective. I think OD calculation is based on Virtus being driven in D mode for the DSG.
VW's DSG has two D/S gear modes.
If you are driving gently in D mode, upshift happens around 1800 rpm, and in S upshift happens around 2800 to 3000 rpm. Turbo FE gets impacted heavily when turbo kicks in, which generally happens around 1600 to 1800 rpm.
That's why if you drive the VW DSG cars, in D mode always, in light to normal traffic or highway, without any sudden acceleration, i think 80 to 90% of the time the turbo wont even spool up, saving lots of fuel.
I once drove Seltos DCT, which i think will be similar to the setup in Verna too. It doesn't have D/S mode, but driving mode of eco, normal, sport. Forget eco, even in normal mode, I did observed RPM going to around 23K to 26K rpm in gentle acceleration meaning more turbo time.
But truth to be told, mileage is perhaps the last priority of anyone buying turbo petrols, since these engines are known for fun, and not mileage.

I have been driving Virtus GT for over a few months. VW handling and dynamics are the best. I’m surprised at this review. The only drawback is the quality of interior could have been better. More hard plastic is used in the dashboard and the quality of plastic is not a VW standard. AC makes hissing noises sometimes.

Hard Disagree on the ride, handling, and safety front! Test driven both the cars and though the new verna is miles ahead in terms of handling compared to the old ones, still no match to the accurate steering on slavia/virtus. The body roll is well contained and the 'THUD' on a VW has no match.

@@abhilashes5162Have you driven the latest Verna turbo? It’s faster than virtus and is far better to live with on daily basis. VW 2.0 cars have subpar components and that shows when you look the n number of breakdowns they have. Please come out of Stone Age thinking that only Germans can make good cars. Atleast ask VW to put a faster power window motor in their 20 lakhs plus car😂

I have test driven both the cars and I agree with Overdrive's opinion voiced here. I can only imagine what the N line variant of Verna would have to offer.
Almost all of those who can't stomach the new Verna's performance and handling either don't own the car or draw their opinion just by "reading" other's reviews.
Fact remains nobody cares whether you accept the fact that Verna trumps Virtus. Also these are just commuter cars and look at them for that they are. Just don't live in a hyperbole.

Yes driving dynamics is only for minuscule number of enthusiasts but to say safety of the car hardly matters than there is something seriously wrong with you. I have seen many peoples close ones dying in a car accident and some facing serious health issues due to the injuries they sustained after the crash due to terrible built quality and unstable body shell.
