I think milk of the poppy is like opium it dulls pain but is addictive the mountain uses it a lot to deal with the headaches he gets due to his gigantism think morphine
It is opium. Milk of the poppy is just the liquid form. It was common as a medicinal painkiller for thousands of years and yes, people got addicted to it. Marcus Aurelius, the roman emperor, was a massive poppy fiend. Being as wealthy and powerful as he was though, he never was short of the stuff, so it didn't really show like addiction does these days. Thing is, milk of the poppy isn't as strong as refined opium that is smoked, or heroin, which is even stronger and has a more intense high. In the archaeological record, there are many sites where archaeologists find piles of bones, wood, or some kind ornate stone pipe laced with traces of petrified opium. Not wanting to touch that hot potato, you have to dig to find this information. It's like how when they found Pompeii and discovered all the brothels with their lewd artwork on the walls (so foreigners who couldn't speak Greek or Latin could just point for what they wanted from the prostitutes. They actually avoided taking tours in those sites for quite some time and would just show the architectural beautiful buildings or the preserved bodies. Opium was more popular than marijuana; curiously enough, weed was smoked, inhaled in a kind of incense burner, or put in food and seen as a purely medicinal herb. Opium was where it was at, for recreation or easing the pain of illness or injury. It also shaped a lot of human history in subtle and overt ways. The Opium wars of China still affect the West's relationship with China to this very day and influences a lot of the antagonism that now currently exists between the US and China, with the potential for WWIII. The much more intense and addictive fentanyl is wreaking havoc across the US and elsewhere, causing civil unrest, societal unease, and calls for radical action. Opium still shapes our world to this day. The study of the simple poppy plant leads down a rabbit hole, with stories of healing, madness, indescribable pain, the triumph of the human spirit, and the greed of men.
It is. It's explained in the books that it's created using poppy aka opium and then mixed with milk and honey. I've always gotten the impression it's effects are similar to that of Codeine or Oxy because of how delirious the user gets. Still not as bad/crazy as the psychedelic drink Shade of the Evening, which is the elixir that Dany drank when she visited the House of the Undying and had her visions and in the books, Euron Greyjoy is seemingly addicted to it (from the Euron chapter that was released for Winds of Winter years ago, poor man got absolutely butchered by his TV adaptation)
that's why growing poppies is prohibited in many countries only poppy seeds are sold the more milk poppy you drink the more you need later you get addicted to it and can't deal with pain without it
At least that how I took it as well. Ironically enough, the King just undid all his good work at uniting the realm, and put Alicent back on the path of war.
Yup. Alicent wouldn’t recognize details of the song of ice and fire because Viserys never told her. That prophecy is only meant for the current king to pass it on to his heir, so only Rhaenyra ever knew. Alicent just focused on a few key words like Aegon, prince, promised, unite the realm (not against white walkers but the lords of Westeros who will rebel against any female ruler). Earlier this episode she was ready to give up on Aegon because he’s such a disappointment, especially after the *ape, and I think she meant it when she told Rhaenyra she’d make a good queen. But misinterpreting Visery’s last words will now make her think she has the king’s mandate to make Aegon king.
@@atkim122 Alicent was going to make Aegon king either way lol. Not that I'm about to start spoiling any book details for you, but let's just say the Greens feel strongly enough about Aegon being in charge that they're willing to absolutely rip apart the entire realm lmfao

@@Christrulesall2 Nah. It's opium. And it's not medieval, we still get opioids from poppies cultivated in the Golden Triangle and Golden Crescent regions. The flowering portion of the plant is cut and a milk-like sap is collected and dried. The dried, crystalline residue is opium. One of the main components of opium is morphine. The morphine in milk of the poppy can then be converted into more concentrated forms like hydromorphone or oxycodone or whatever.
Paddy Considine take a bow, good lord. Ended his time on the show with one of the most heartbreaking performances of this franchise. At least Viserys didn't have to see the Dance of Dragons play out.

@@issaphae9659 I heard it was improvised too, when the crown fell he came in and helped viserys and put the crown on his head. Originally viserys was just gonna waddle onto the throne
I think he knew before then, which is why he said it. Bringing the issue up in general when the line of succession was "obviously settled" (because everyone knows those are laenor's sons, right? ☻️) was already basically calling them bastards in an official, legal setting. He likely wasn't getting back to Driftmark once Viserys walked in and his possible maneuver with the Hightowers was thwarted, so he went out with spite.
Well no, he did make a good argument but he tried to undermine what his brother initially wanted. He was dumb the way he went about it. Who gives a damn if those are not your nephews. YOU are not the lord of driftmark.
Alicent got her bias confirmed in that moment for Her son Aegon, That’s why. She was prepaid to “loose” the throne to Rhaenyra because she knows; especially after what Aegon did to the girl. Rhaenyra was a better fit for the crown, but after hearing Vicerys ; it’s almost like she found for a reason to keep her son on the throne so she doesn’t feel bad for putting a terrible person on it herself. Like “Oh this is what my late Husband wanted, we must fulfill his wish” type thing
Can't blame her. Remember before Viserys told Alicent about his dream he had about his son wearing the Conqueror's Crown so that seed had already kinda been planted. And then he tells her this.
That's so annoying & dump if the show brign this as an excuse to make you sympathize with alicent more that's soo annoying doesn't make sense for many reasons
@@laza0202 Alicent has been extremely divided into whether support Aegon and Otto or fullfill Visery's wishes, in the dinner after Rhaenyra's toast and Visery's words, she found a reason to choose her, but after hearing Visery's "last wishes", and thanks to the previous comment here, I remembered that he had told her something similar in episode 2, makes sense, it's not just the whole dream thing, that's more like the last drop to fill the cup in Alicent's mind to support her son.
The Velaryons back Stannis in the books. They aren't in the show because they aren't really relevant to the plot. Hightowers are similar. They still rule Old Town in the time of GoT and are still one of the wealthiest & most powerful houses in Westeros.
House Hightower might be my favorite house in Westeros. First men lineage, rule a port town with vaguely eldritch origins and a huge fuckin lighthouse, patrons of the arts and sciences, just chillin collecting that tax revenue being generally indispensable to the Tyrells. Leader of their house might be a crock sorcerer/alchemist with a hot witch daughter, plotting how to defend against Euron, another sorcerer.
Vaemond died for no reason other than his own ambition. He was right to try and bring it up and make his shot. But the moment the engagement of Jace and Luke to Baela and Rhaena was announced his argument died. The next Lord of the Tides would have a Velaryon bride, a Velaryon name, and any kids they have would have Velaryon blood, and it would make the future Queen a Velaryon proper. It literally fixes every problem he had, and his house grows in power even more. He just didn't want to be passed over as head of the House for a child.
You didn't understand the series....watch it again He is interested in blood not the name and it must be passed down from a true velaryon male....Baela and Rhaena are targaryeans in his eyes so in order for your point to work their husband will have to be a true velaryon....which Jace is not cuz he's a Bastard
Also, if Rhaenyra would've told Rhaenys that Laenor was still alive, that would mean Rhaenyra and Daemon's marriage would be invalid as well. Which means she just had more babies that would've been named bastards. Plus, I assume that would've also been treason to fake your death and allow your valid wife to remarry.
If Jace and Luke are married to Baela and Rhaena then both the iron throne and driftwood thrones would pass to true Valyrian blood. If Vaemond was purely motivated by wanting to preserve the bloodline he would have been soothed by that announcement, not enraged. That shows that he was largely motivated by his own ambition (and/or a sincere disgust of bastards).
Jace and Luke are not velaryons so even if they marry one there is no "true" velaryon blood You're reading wayy into it.....there was no ambition involved in his petition
@@phoenixking9457 ...Baela and Rhaena are trueborn Velaryons. The children of theirs with Jace and Luke would not have had the name Velaryon, but then the Targaryen kings from then on would have Velaryon blood in them; allowing for future plots.
Remember the daughters that are betrothed to Luke and Jace are Valyrian. So the line will continue. It was a power play. Otto and Alicent wanted a loyal person over driftmark(navy). Now it will fall under Rhaenyra. Moving chess pieces on the board. Alicent will take the kings proclamation on his death bed as a sign to fight. The war of the blacks and greens has officially started. Next episode will show why Rhaenyra decides to join into conflict.
That is not how it works. If it was, then any sibling could claim the head of the family. And Any royal could claim to be King. So when Viserys dies, any of his siblings: Rhaenys, Rhaenyra, Daemon, Aegon, Aemond, Daeron, Haleana, Luke, Jace, Joffrey, Aegon(Rhae), Viserys(Rhae) would all claim for Kingship. Also are you forgetting, that the blood will be dirtied by Bastardy. And not even Velaryon Bastardy. Basically an outside family mess up with theirs.
@@bigivel no. laenor recognized those kids as his. That guy was so wrong. he couldn't accept that his claim was weak. The "dad" the heir recognized those kids, gave them HIS NAME. The "grand father" accepted them. It was his WILL. The "grand mother" accepted them. Its like your brother taking the inheritance you left for your adopted child. That was his fault. Plus those kids are gonna marry the valeryon kids either way. so the next generation all would be fixed. and itsall assumption since there is no dna testing. ' the blood would remain, and the name would remain. plus rhaenery has some valeryon blood so her kids do too. if he had an issue he should have talked to his brother before. his claim was weak af
That look Rhaenys gives as Viserys drags himself to the throne. Years ago, he was given what should have been hers. And here, in one of his final moments as King, he gives her the power. He let's her decide, as she would have if she had been given what she deserved. He made her the Queen she always was in that moment. Stunning.
You got to remember, Alicent has shown this episode that she is on a religious kick. I think that when she heard Viserys talking about Aegon uniting the realm, that he was the one. I think she will look on what the king said as confirmation of everything she believed. She is looking for any excuse to put her son forward, now the king's words make it look like it his divine right. It is safe to say, that Roshi's right, things are about to get spicy.
Well everyone keeps forgetting about that conversation by the bonfire in episode 3 where Viserys told her that he had a dream about his firstborn son becoming a great conqueror and being born with a crown and all that, that's definitely what she thinks he's talking about with the "Aegon's Dream" stuff

They weren't saying Corlys was dead, they were saying it's possible that by the time they arrive he will have passed because he has a blood infection from his wounds. 14:00 nvm, you got it now. 😄
you can see that the rotting side of viserys face at the dinner table is on the side where the hightowers are sitting but his side where his face is mostly okay is on the side rhaenyra and her family is sitting. its great symbolism that shows how much more he cares about rhae and her family than alicent and hers. one side got the good end of things from him while the other was left to rot.
Jace and Luke doesn't have Velaryon's blood, but they were legitimate. Laenor raised them as his own and loved them and they have the name. Just as an adoptive father. And Vaemond's problem with bloodline went down, because their son would have Velaryon's blood regardless, since the boys are to marry Laena's daugthers, Baela and Rhaena
Technically, they're not legitimate because even though they were raised as Laenor's sons, they were still bastards, and they were obviously so. Coryls and Laenor would've needed to legitimize them, but that would be admitting that they're not biologically Velaryons.
Laenor did not official adopt the boys he pretended to be their father, therefore the boys are still legally illegitimate. Both Vaemond and the Hightowers have the right to be upset with them
@@missrese868 “As with morphine it is possible to become addicted to milk of the poppy if it is over-used.” Direct quote from the wiki page, it’s an opioid hence the poppy part in the name
While Vaemond is correct that Jace and Luke are bastards, Lord Corlys has pretty explicitly said he doesn’t care and is passing Driftmark to them. As he’s a second son, Driftmark should go to Laena’s children/their spouses before him anyway. He has no real claim. Also, a lord can appoint anyone they want to be heir. Doesn’t have to be blood-related and legally Luke is.
Exactly. I don't see how some second son with no stake and no birthright is the aggrieved party when the King and the Lord agreed who the heir is and don't care about bloodlines.
Imo, the miscommunication thing serves as a catalyst for the Dance of Dragons. It’s not like it wasn’t gonna happen if that scene didn’t take place. Alicent is grasping at anything that reminds her that her sons need to rule.
This is old, but if anyone is wondering. Milk of the poppy, refers to the poppy plant, which is used in medicine to create drugs like morphine, oxycodone, opium, and yes, heroin. Milk of the poppy in the ASOIAF universe is used as a painkiller, but the characters also know how bad and addicting it is, and that’s why Daemon is worried about it being given to his brother.
I love that despite Veimond being right, and we all respect the hell out of him for speaking out, EVERYBODY accepted that he went too far. And huge shoutout to Paddy Considine for his acting as Viserys Targaryen. His performance through this entire show was an absolute masterclass.
I mean he wasn’t even all that right either. If Luke marries Baela, their children will still be of Velaryon blood, the line won’t end. But I guess he’s all about the “pure blood” business.
@@REChronic54 It's not really like that tbh. Line of succession in Westeros passes down the male line. It goes Trueborn sons > Trueborn daughters > bastards. So basically, with everyone thinking Ser Laenor dead, Vaemond is technically the rightful heir to the throne. Luke has no right to the title of Lord of Driftmark which is what he would be. That's the issue. The male line of house velaryon would lose their rightful holdings It's basically the exact same as the Stannis being the rightful king while Joffrey has no legit claim to the throne.
@@DillsyYourDaddy67 You’re right. But I guess you can argue about the philosophical view of it. Fun fact: the scene of Daemon helping Viserys up the throne wasn't in the script. Paddy Constantine dropped the crown on accident and Matt Smith went up and helped him along the way.
Daemon always saw Viserys as weak but when he helped him to the throne he finally realised what makes his brother strong, his loyalty and love for his daughter.
Alicent never realized King Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra. She 💯% thinks he was talking to her and about her son. Which gives her a reason to go harder 💡💡
I loved the reactions. Especially that you all caught about how deep Viserys's love in for not only family but his daughter. You don't get a lot in shows / movies, but a good father's love is just as deep as a good mother's love. I cried that whole scene KNOWING he was so far gone with Leprosy, in pain and near death yet the strength of his love for his daughter and her asking for his help proved that a good dad no matter how far gone will aid his daughter. A father's love is a father's love. Just as there is no love like a mother for her son. There is no love like a father for his daughter. The look his daughter gave him as he glanced at her broke me. The admiration and thankfulness pour out of her expression. That is all a dad needs. Daemon helping his brother shows yes. He loves his brother. For the first time him seeing his brother so broken was the first time he even stumbled with words at sight of his brother. Daemon never loses it, but you could see in his expression and face that he truly hurt from his brother's condition.
Here’s the thing! Vaemond was right about trying to protect his line and keep his line pure! However Corlys LITERALLY built driftmark and the navy. Corlys didn’t care that Luke wasn’t biologically related to him. He still wanted Luke to inherit Driftmark. To try to usurp the throne against your brothers wishes while he’s hurt but still alive is just snake ish! I wish he didn’t do that because we need as many black people on this show as possible.

Those children were born inside of a marriage and Laenor accepted them as his true born sons and so did Corlys.
Wrong. Those children are indeed bastards. Acceptance means nothing. Jace, Luke, and Joffery are not Verlaryan blood 🩸 Sorry.
It’s kind of like heroin which is also made from poppy 😮
that's why growing poppies is prohibited in many countries only poppy seeds are sold the more milk poppy you drink the more you need later you get addicted to it and can't deal with pain without it
That's exactly what it is. Opium is a flower.
Alicent never figured out that viserys believed he was talking to rhanerya. So she misinterpreted that conversation as him wanting aegon as king.

Milk of the Poppy be that medieval oxycotion.

Alicent got her bias confirmed in that moment for Her son Aegon, That’s why. She was prepaid to “loose” the throne to Rhaenyra because she knows; especially after what Aegon did to the girl. The Velaryons back Stannis in the books. They aren't in the show because they aren't really relevant to the plot. Hightowers are similar. They still rule Old Town in the time of GoT and are still one of the wealthiest & most powerful houses in Westeros.

You didn't understand the series....watch it again
He is interested in blood not the name and it must be passed down from a true velaryon male....Baela and Rhaena are targaryeans in his eyes so in order for your point to work their husband will have to be a true velaryon....which Jace is not cuz he's a Bastard

Fr. Vaemond, while he _wasn't wrong_ in the slightest, spoke too much with too little protection.
The male line of house velaryon would lose their rightful holdings
It's basically the exact same as the Stannis being the rightful king while Joffrey has no legit claim to the throne.
@@DillsyYourDaddy67 You’re right. But I guess you can argue about the philosophical view of it. 26:40 I think Viserys meant Aegon Targaryen (Jon Snow) as the prince who was promised in the prophecy of ice and fire because he was the only Targaryen who gathered the people to confront the Night King.🤯
Fun fact: the scene of Daemon helping Viserys up the throne wasn't in the script. Paddy Constantine dropped the crown on accident and Matt Smith went up and helped him along the way.
Kinda seems unlikely since the camera also immediately focused on the dropped crown. Unless it was shot multiple times.

Editor-san, great job peter parker-ing Lupa-san putting his glasses on😂
Daemon's swing was so hard Lupa's glasses went missing
😂🤣 Daemon swing through their screen
Daemon was looking at aemond like "boy I invented this game...I'm basically you" even their names are anagrams of each other
Yo the beef jerky edit on viserys had me crying 😭😭
hats off to paddy, such an incredible portrayal of viserys
If vaemond really cared about blood he would also know that the bloodline of house velaryon would continue through the daughters who the boys will marry. So, he is just being too stubborn to be honest.
Yeah the whole "The house is going to disappear" argument kinda made no sense
@@ByuntaeOG The male line of Velaryon would lose their rightful holdings which is a pretty big deal. Bear in mind, this is a society where women typically do not inherit anything unless there is literally no male family left living
Vaemond would see his families ancestral lands ruled by a pretender with no legal claim to those lands
You have to learn about feudalism before talking nonsense. Do you know the salic law? The new lord remains a bastard even if he marries a Velaryon it doesn't change anything.
@@ByuntaeOG two words: salic law.
Also, the boys are legally Velaryon. The next generation will have the name and the blood united so there was nothing to be worried about after that deal was announced. Vaemond really just wanted power and when he realized he'd been outplayed he lost it.
YOOOO THE SHIV SOUNDS WHEN ALICENT HUGGED THE GIRL MY SIIIIDES
Daemon: You're just the cheap fucking knock off.
Aemond: Oh no no. I'm the upgrade.
There’s no upgrading Daemon, ESPECIALLY not a wannabe/cosplayer like Aemond.
7 pointed star necklace alicent wears is for the faith of the seven. A lot of the members of the faith are requesting more funds.
The models are all old and got spiderwebs on them and cobwebs he hasn’t touched them in a long time.
They focus on the scar that alicent gave rhaenyra.
Alicent doesn't know anything about The Song of Fire and Ice Prophecy. She assumed he was just talking about their son, so now Alicent is going harder to put him on the throne.
"GLARES IN DR UMAR" DYING!!!!
