James Fell hit the nail on the head! It is the nefarious among our species who rule the world because they do not operate by the laws that well-intentioned people hold themselves accountable to.
I tend to agree, but I also think people give themselves far too much credit. People tend to mostly fall into either the "people are mostly good, but there are bad apples" camp or the "people are shit so only look out for #1" camp. With the earth crawling with more humans every day and so frighteningly few of them either being a Hitler or a Da Vinci, I think it's more accurate to say that most people actually don't matter. The world isn't a battle between saints and sinners. The world is 1% saints, 1% sinners, and 98% irrelevant. Most people (I would argue by a pretty huge margin) simply don't matter. On the note of power corrupting, I think Frank Herbert put it best - "It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible."

Growing up in the 70's with high school US History courses in Iowa and Washington state, I never heard a narrative that the founders were perfect angels. I was taught, and it was widely known about the facts regarding their lives in the 1770s. The whole narrative of the founders being perfect came later in the 80s when Reagan was popular with conservatives. Liberals seem to be the only ones who think they are doing everyone a favor by pointing out that the founders were all white men with slaves. This idea that most Americans would be surprised to learn about slavery in the colonial US is just bullshit. We were absolutely taught about the mistakes, but their basic ideas for starting a country were sound and the Democracy that they set up brought changes and progress leading to a civil war that abolished slavery. I'm sure there are parts of the country where history is/was taught differently, but we don't need to spread the lie that American students have been lied to about the founders charactor flaws looking back through a modern lens. As an old white liberal Democrat I see these deceitful arguments as not helping our cause in winning elections and making more progress. Supreme Court anyone?

32:30 strawman. Not sorry. The point, according to keto advocates, is that the resulting hormone signals make it easier to maintain a caloric deficit. I'm not a keto advocate, just a dude who can read. It's also been demonstrated that getting more of your calories from fat and less from glucose produces a metabolic advantage whereby more of the energy you consumed is wasted as heat vs being made available to the body. A second benefit. As a side note.. there is no "the keto diet". Ketosis can be achieved through a vast range of dietary inputs. There are carnivores and vegans both eating for ketosis. To generalize that they're all making the same mistake is untenable. So weird to hear such indefensible thinking from a guy who's clearly good at critical thinking.
Those same wonderful white men also gave us Jim Crow. And right now, they're giving us discrimination, voter suppression, misogyny, bigoty, and pederasty. But you won't mention any of that.
The founding fathers did not end slavery. Slavery wasn't ended until 1865. And everybody who voted for and against emancipation proclamation was from the north since the south wasn't part of the USA. They didn't get a vote in the matter. Lincoln basically had to persuade his own northerners to vote against slavery despite the fact that the North was against slavery strictly for economic reasons and not moral reasons. Even Lincoln, at the beginning of his presidency, had no intention of freeing slaves. He only did that to keep Europe out of the civil war to help out the confederacy. Ending slavery was a struggle that almost failed.
I'm curious to ask, but how exactly did the founding fathers "end" slavery? Especially being that human beings whose skin tones were generally dark were still being owned by Southern whites until the Civil War nearly 80 years later?
James Fell is extremely culture bound himself, and as such is not able to honestly make commentary about previous societies and cultures in a fair and explanatory way. Everything he looks at he judges and usually condemns. I can do the same thing, about anything I want, so essentially Fell does not bring much to the table. His fare is rather poor, gruel and suet, bland, and without much substance. To get pissed at the mores of Puritans impinging on his own sex life... Really? To not fold in the Spanish Inquisition onto Columbus? Really? To not fold in the Spanish throne and its own expansionary, imperial, centralizing, consolidating trends onto Columbus? Really? To blandly give the British government some sort of pass because they "set aside the land west of the Appalachians for Native Americans"--despite the British demonstrated inability to conquer and hold those territories, despite their being overwhelmingly dominated by the French, and to make such statements without substantiation? Really? Drivel, Drivel, and Horse scheiss!
I’ll bet you’re a lot of fun at parties…everything you state is probably true, but a person like James Fell can bring some much-needed life to world history and even engender questioning of ‘official history’ which is a good thing. I don’t want to diss someone who’s doing good - if flawed - things.
Cool! Now do Neil degrasse-tyson! Sarcasm aside, nuance takes time and space (space/time?), which a popular audience doesn't usually have. Entire books have been written analyzing each of the topics you critique. Perhaps he can give a super-nuanced discussion of everything but this simply isn't the format to do so. I don't know you and your background , you might know his stuff really well and have legitimate complaints. From this angle, though, this is like asking for a 3-hour debate on the pros of redistributing resources such that societal issues are resolved before law enforcement is necessary, when all there's space for is a shorthand slogan such as "defund" the police.
@@joanfregapane8683 Snark is, indeed snark, which you dish out quite well yourself ;). @@brian.the.archivist You and Joan are both right that there are fun things to discuss in history, and time does not allow full treatment. A lot of what frustrates me is that incessant tenancy that everyone seems to have to use the current mores of society to poke fun at historical figures, instead of looking at who historical figures are and who we are both through the same critical lens. A simple example is slavery: We love to pick on the founders of the United States having been slave owners. Fair enough. But if we use the same lens, we eat potatoes and wheat products which were were harvested by crews of quasi-enslaved harvesters who are outside of the labor laws of our nation, who are paid something but who have very little control over their circumstances, who have poor medical services, and if female, little or no control over their sexual privacy (i.e. quasi sex slavery). We literally ignore the labor protection needs of these and other people because it is convenient to do so. Does that mean we should excuse our founders of their wrongs? Of course not. But we should be willing to pay more for our potatoes and pay these folks a legal wage. You could go on in the same way regarding labor rights for those who made our clothing, shoes, cellphones, etc. Do you realize that you can buy slaves in the Philippines? Yeah, there is a market price. It is just so much virtue signalling to just rattle through the "sins of our fathers" so to speak. If we are going to be critical in an area of ethics or religion or belief systems, it seems fair that we are critical all around. And instead I see that there is a "aren't we so special" approach of moralistic grandstanding that is remarkably widespread, and it is quite frustrating. Thanks to you both for listening.
I enjoyed reading your comment and replies, I am disgusted by the seventeenth century Spanish conquest. I realize that I think about these monsters more than most Americans. I wish James Fell made the connection along side Columbus, but If he sparks the curiosity of people who normally wouldn't read history, can you really find fault? Everyone views life from a different perspective, if you are further along your path, good for you. Please be patient with those who have potential to do something good, if not great. By the way, I feel the only difference between the Spanish Inquisition and today's Western society is a couple hundred years of secular government tempering religions worst tendencies.

Yeah, I remember my father telling me this story. My father and his 12 brothers all lived in Morristown New Jersey and that's all they listened to was the radio mainly for the NY Yankee games. My grandparents only really knew Italian and very little English. But it seemed that it was mainly this area and being a kid would make you a little scared.

I really love your show because you bring so much good information to the public, however this show seemed to be more about criticizing other people and mocking them rather than any actual discussion.
I couldn’t finish watching, that being said you have so many great ones so I’ll go watch them.
I know now that the War of the Worlds broadcast panic was very over-blown & exaggerated but I could understand people being confused/concerned if they tuned in late & given the context of war in Europe at the time. It doesn't seem too dissimilar to certain mockumentaries aired on Animal Planet (mermaids, mega shark) that had people confused since it was done in a format that people were familiar with (investigative/documentary/interviews with scientific experts) The line between information & entertainment is very blurry these days.
Edit: really enjoyable interview. Definitely going to check out James' webite & books :)
This goes nicely with my favorite foul mouthed science channels; Crime pays but Botany Doesn't and Extractions and Ire(formerly Explosions and Fire), both found on TH-cam.
I'm going to check those channels out. Any specific episodes you could recommend for a good introduction?
@@randibgood Well, Tony of Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't released one today that's pretty representative of his work. Heavy Chicago accent, ex-railroad worker with a great memory for Latin names and family associations.
As far as I'm concerned the Explosions and Fire episode on White Phosphorus is essential. A horrible substance, internationally banned, that's still in widespread use. Russia is bombing Ukraine with it and vice-versa, US still uses it as a smoke producing agent(bullshit!). There's alot of lighter content too where every reaction seems to produce "fucking yellow powder".
@@randibgood If you haven't already heard of him, Milo Rossi's Miniminuteman channel is also in the foul mouthed science genre. Archeology, anthropology, ect. He started doing tick-tock and switched to TH-cam a couple years ago, A bright lad with a good sense of humor and adventure.

Your memory bad ? Wait till you get to 80. You can be talking to someone and forget their name 😢

There are no randomized control trials proving Keto is bad for you, or the caloric deficit theory. Sorry. Most studies test a 'keto-like' diet, which has many many more carbs than actual keto. This is another "it is so' sort of proof. Ketosis is a normal state also, don't get it mixed up with ketoacidosis.

So weird to hear such indefensible thinking from a guy who's clearly good at critical thinking.
then white guilt? the forefathers also ended slavery but nobody ever mentions that.
Ending slavery was a struggle that almost failed.
wrong the brits where fighting Africa to end it@@Johnmhatheist
you are implying intent of Lincolns morals? @@Johnmhatheist
You are right, there is nothing particularly wrong with noting interesting stuff in history that catches your attention, which is what he is doing. But a historian's standard is far higher, and I just hope people are aware that he is not only biased, but making his bias very clear...
