@@hello-cn5nh The difference is the latter bears increasingly little resemblance to the Biblical Jesus those identifying as Christians have historically claimed to believe in. It's one thing to be religious, it's a whole different level of dangerous insanity when someone wants freedom of religion protections for just doing whatever they want. If all Christianity is is a love of power, then it's become a clear and present danger to the future of the country because a functioning democracy hinges on at least some tiny connection to the truth like the idea that the vote matters whether you win or lose. Except the gospel Jesus said the whole of the Mosaic Law all 613 mitzvot including the one that endorses killing gays for having sex are to remain in full force and effect until "heaven and earth pass away". @xstatic-ow5mz ah so that's a no. I would strongly recommend being a little less confident and a little more curious. Judiasm is an ethno religion. A person born to a Jewish family but is not observant is just as Jewish as a practicing convert, or a practicing Jew by birth. It is actually Halacha to not ask if someone is a convert or not. Historically it's been matrilinial meaning if your mother is Jewish then you are Jewish however in the modern era we are seeing a push toward people with only Jewish fathers. I do not belive in any G-d or gods but I pray and live a Jewish life because it binds me to my community.
@@dakotastevens8 You pray? I was about to give you the benefit of the doubt before you admitted to that hypocrisy. Thanks, you just convinced me that it is your interlocutor who is correct, not you. And stop pretending to atheist because you're clearly not one of us.
Do you have any ideas as to why there aren't as many black atheists? I mean, all the most well known ones appear to be Caucasian. Ever wondered why? I have.
@hello-cn5nh I'm black and am atheist and I can't for the life of me understand why any black person chooses to believe religious crap. 🤷🏽♀️Ya got me! BTW we do exist and there's quite a bit of information if you Google.
@@Mehki227 I never said black atheists don't exist. I'm proof of it. But you have to admit that we're a minority within the skeptic community. Do you deny this?
@@hello-cn5nhmy theory is because church is so rooted to the infrastructure that helped black people get through slavery, poverty and discrimination in the past. You can survive a lot if you have a good human support system and for many black people (and some white people too depending on where they live), atheism would mean social isolation.
"Jesus calls us to be a light, not a wildfire." Yeah, but he did say if we're lukewarm, he'd spit us out. Depending on the gospel that is referenced, Jesus was either a hippy-dippy pacifist who wanted everyone to love each other, or he was a very narrow-minded xenophobe who "brought not peace, but a sword." The Dominionists are not misinterpreting the words of Christ. They are cherry-picking. Jesus is whatever the determined bible-reader wants him to be. And that's exactly the problem with the religion, or just about any religion. It's up to humans to define the mind of the god of their choosing, not the god defining the mind of the human.
Very well put. God always seems to hate what his followers hate and "love" what his followers love. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around.
I think its interesting that when talking about "Christian protection" he (seemingly accidentally) split a line between believers and oppressed minorities as if the minorities suffering under Christianity and nationalism arent themselves christian nationalist, which quite a few are.
I have always loved having discussions about life and the world with people who believe differently than I do. It has broken my heart that Trump and the Evangelicals took a hard right, conspiratorial turn--where even your own family members will accuse you of working on behalf of pedophiles. It's hard to have a conversation when one side isn't engaged with reality.
I know this is going to sound goofy, but I would recommend the series "The Occult History of the Third Reich" and the Soviet documentary "Triumph Over Violence" sometimes also called "Ordinary Fascism". These really did help me understand the underlying social changes and conditions that lead to the rise of Nazism and reminded me a lot of the Conspiracism and Soul Searching of the current United States; it shows how a country can suffer from multiple issues and not make the connection as to why; "The Occult History of the Third Reich" shows people going down social rabbit holes and endings up falling for the Nazi imagery and hype, whereas "Triumph Over Violence" shows how the only beneficiaries of Nazism and it's "culture" ended up being the wealthy industrialists who financially backed it.
@@edwardmiessner6502 That is the simplified definition of Fascism. Nazism was a Fascist movement, it has nothing to do with socialism; the Soviet documentary "Triumph Over Violence" actually makes this point through demonstration.
As a fellow Baylor U. student, surprisingly, one of the greatest push away from Christianity for me was the required Religion class at Baylor. I was taught growing up that one never questioned ANYTHING written in the Bible but I had read even before grade school from my mom’s book club which was classic fiction (not science fiction). In doing so I read about a variety of religions in the world and though I read fiction the details reflected religions accurately and in powerful ways. The Baylor religion class discussed earlier cultures from which some of the stories in the Bible were drawn: an example is a Babylonian tale of the great flood that corresponds to the Biblical Noah tale. There were other similar examples in the class and for me this went directly against the way I was cautioned to never EVER tie the fundamentalist belief system to those prior religious “legends”. Being an earlier reader of other religious lifestyles combined with the Baylor class cemented for me that humans use religion to untangle both meaning in life and also death but this I not proof that any religions are true and proven to be accurate.
Thank you both for being able to sit down and have a civilized conversation. You both respect each other, and just talk without yelling. And you pretty much agree as to the end-effect we'd (you'd) all like to see.
Dude is dropping names of a lot of bands I used to have in high rotation and still go back to, so this is fun. For me it's also The Prayer Chain, DigHayZoose, The Throes, Starflyer 59, Plankeye, I could go on. I went to Seattle Pacific University in the late '90s and some of these bands played in our cafeteria (including Sixpence None The Richer before they got big). Saw part of MXPX hanging out in my dorm bldg 😆 What a time to be alive
I was in a christian hardcore band in 1999. We definitely would have made fun of bands like Five Iron Frenzy, MXPX, Ghoti Hook, etc, because they weren't "heavy" (and we were listening to NIV, Overcome, xDisciplex). It's really silly to think about now. We did even open for Slick Shoes on new years eve 1999. Lol. Of course, I'm agnostic now. Growing up in church was enough to make me never want to be involved in organized religion again 😁🙏
@@elrondhubbard9127Is there such a thing as "disorganized" religion? Anyway there no such as Christianity. The New Testiment is a joke. The Gospel of John and the first 3 chapters of Revelation are all that's viable.
First of, "Ghoti Hook" is FISH Hook, and MXPX and Five Iron Frenzy are both dope, but Showbread is a band I love beyond all others in the Christian music scene. It's a side band for the vocalist of FIF and it's way more wild haha Great video!
You know, I'm not a Christian or an atheist but I agreed on many things that were said in this video. And as someone who criticizes Christianity more, I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to agree with everything he said, and that is a very high compliment coming from me. There is something I've learned in my 33 years on this earth, and that is respecting each other is one of the only ways forward if we're going to make it.
@@RachelWeeping I may be reading this wrong, but is that a threat? And if I am, I have faced many judgements from the Christians, and I choose to think that my family and I will make it. Sure, we could all be doomed, but I choose to believe in hope, I've been told I have a pretty grim outlook most of the time, so being compared to Mary Poppins is pretty amusing.
As a Christian who is always learning how to be more like Christ, I greatly appreciate hearing criticism of the church from especially people who have left it. I got a lot out of this. Thank you.
Thank you for a thoughtful conversation. I watch a lot of atheist content and I run the risk of seeing only a particular kind of Christian, the kind which can pose a threat to the cosmopolitan society I desire. Which is expected as that segment of the Christian spectrum would be exactly what the atheist TH-camrs feel the need to address. Oftentimes, the louder voices are the ones that command the most attention. But they are not necessarily representative of the best and brightest. So it is a pleasure to hear a reasonable voice among the American Christians. It reminds me that it is more likely that the majority of Christians just want to live peaceably among fellow Americans, regardless of their beliefs or non-beliefs. Dr. Andrew Whitehead offers a sane and reasoned approach to the topic of Christian Nationalism. With all the craziness of Trump and the MAGA cult, QANON and other right wing chicanery, I found some hopefulness in Dr. Andrew quiet talk.
I've been reading a lot about the transition from the Social Gospel to right-wing authoritarian christianity, and as someone that grew up loving and being inspired by the Social Gospel, I've only really been able to see it through that lens, that authoritarian christianity is essentially heretical. I'm very glad to see that there are people within the Christian community that is also in this thinking, since, as an atheist, there's not really anything I can do to help people back towards a healthier version of their religion.
There is no such as Christianity. Who founded "Christianity?" NO one. Christianity got it's name bestowed on them from people who didn't believe what they were selling.
I still have some Five Iron Frenzy kickin it on my PC, but I will say this for them, they certainly didn't try to copy other ppls style, were fairly original, and weren't overtly "Jesus jesus jesus" with the lyrics. Good music is just good music.
I saw the movie Easy Rider yesterday. Words of wisdom from Jack Nicholson. They fear you because you are free. They are a slave to their draconian beliefs
Don't bring Judaism or the Jews into this. When Christians use the word, "Judaeo-Christian" they're Judaizers from one viewpoint and appropriate Jewish culture from another viewpoint. And they support Israel but only as the landing pad for their Jesus upon his return (2,000 years late now!) and love Jews but only as people to be recruited into American Evangelical Christianity. Otherwise they dislike them and those infected with Nazi ideology despise them.
"Do you think that a benevolent deity would come down and say you got it wrong..." Given human understanding (or misunderstanding) of deity at the time those scroll were written, and how religion had evolved out or deifying forces of nature, it's an understandable question. People assumed a certain immediacy of deity. Most had no concept of the vastness of the universe, and how far away God might actually be. Or that there was an alternate realm known as spirit that interacted with matter not at all, or only through certain beings. What's missing is an appreciation for what "freewill" actually means. Those who dislike the idea that they're ultimately responsible for their own actions like to argue for the non--existence of freewill. But that aside, we are free to screw up as much as possible, just as we are free to learn from our mistakes. Are we learning? Deity does give us hints along the way. Some of those hints made it into texts. The irony here is, that God has you Seth and Andrew to tell Christian Nationalists they're wrong. You get to be his mouthpiece. 😉
It’s easy enough to say Christian nationalism is idolatry but the spirit of manifest destiny is intrinsic to the faith when it comes with a great evangelical commission, a promise of world domination & the threat of a fate worse than death for any dissenters.
at the core of christianity is superiority over other religions and the need to defend the faith. andrew may have tempered most of the extremes of his religion, but i still would be leery of him and his ilk.
I once had a really awkward interaction with the lead singer from MXPX and I still cringe when I think of them. I was a teenager then, so no blame on him.😂
I agree that some of the stuff with guns and the war mentality is a bit whack but I also think guns are fun and I don’t think there is anything wrong with being able to defend your friends and family and self against someone or something that might wish harm. The fact of the matter with all that is that bad things do happen and so we should probably be prepared to either defend against bad things or be ready to be harmed. There is I think a fine line though between being prepared and slipping into paranoia thinking that others are always looking to harm which is obviously not the case. Most people never are in that situation but if you happen to find yourself in a situation like that then you are probably going to wish that you had some way or plan in place to deal with it in a way that you will survive relatively unharmed.
The United States of America will never stop being a Christian nation because it never was a Christian nation in the first place. Many faithful Americans have expressed unease about the evolving societal landscape, which seems to increasingly diverge from their long-held religious beliefs. The legalization of gay marriage, abortion rights, and the freedom to practice various religions have raised concerns that the country is drifting away from its Christian roots. A common sentiment among these individuals is the belief that the United States was established on Christian tenets and has thrived as a result of divine blessings. However, a closer examination reveals that the notion of the United States as a Christian nation is largely a misconception. In reality, the U.S. was founded as a secular nation, with religious freedom ingrained in its core. While the Declaration of Independence contains the phrase "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights," the identity of this "Creator" remains open to individual interpretation, distancing it from any specific religious affiliation. Moreover, several influential founding fathers, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine, embraced deist beliefs-a philosophical position that acknowledges a creator but denies their intervention in worldly affairs. Influenced by the Age of Enlightenment, these visionaries held a skeptical view of organized religion, advocating for reason and rationality in spiritual matters. Thomas Paine, for instance, notably espoused the view that religious institutions were human constructs meant to subjugate and manipulate the masses. This critical perspective on organized religion was also evidenced in the words of Thomas Jefferson, who encouraged bold questioning and reasoning in matters of faith. Even John Adams, one of the nation's key architects, emphatically stated in the Treaty of Tripoli that the United States "is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion," firmly asserting the nation's commitment to religious liberty and the separation of church and state. The underpinning principles of religious freedom and the separation of church and state are enshrined in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, debunking the notion of the U.S. as a Christian nation. Therefore, it is clear that the United States has always been a secular nation, governed by secular principles rather than religious doctrine. In essence, the United States will never lose its secular underpinnings, for it was never grounded in any specific religious ideology. It stands as a testament to the foresight of its founders, who enshrined religious freedom and secular governance as foundational values, ensuring a society where individuals of all beliefs may coexist and thrive.

Whenever someone says they follow the Bible literally, I always wonder if they're just lying to me or also to themselves.
Regarding the treatment of immigrants and refugees, that should be simple for the TRUE Bible-believer: _You shall not exploit or oppress the stranger,_ _for you yourselves were strangers in the land of Egypt._ -- Exodus 22:21
Seth, I do hope your guest realizes that there isn't any such thing as "the church" when it comes to christianity. The variety of so-called christian beliefs is in the thousands. To classify it as one belief system is ridiculous.
Quite frankly, I find that all religions are schechy at best and should be taken with a grain of salt. I honestly believe that the world would be better off if all religion was done away with. I find that religion is highly based on superstitious origins, strong mythology, heavy philosophy, some astrology, mixed with places or events that took place ages past and it has absolutely nothing to do with our future.

Historically it's been matrilinial meaning if your mother is Jewish then you are Jewish however in the modern era we are seeing a push toward people with only Jewish fathers.
I do not belive in any G-d or gods but I pray and live a Jewish life because it binds me to my community.

I would certainly agree that women and children are often abused in evangelical Christian nationalist households.
I have always loved having discussions about life and the world with people who believe differently than I do. It has broken my heart that Trump and the Evangelicals took a hard right, conspiratorial turn--where even your own family members will accuse you of working on behalf of pedophiles.
So Nazism _was_ socialism!: socialism for the connected rich, capitalism red in tooth and claw for everybody else.
@@edwardmiessner6502 That is the simplified definition of Fascism. Nazism was a Fascist movement, it has nothing to do with socialism; the Soviet documentary "Triumph Over Violence" actually makes this point through demonstration.

Andrew is such a great guy. I've had the pleasure of meeting him in person a few times as we run in similar academic circles.

Bought the book today! Fantastic interview!
This was a really good conversation. I like how honest Andrew was. I wouldn't be surprised to hear he has fully deconstructed in a few years.
Thank you both for being able to sit down and have a civilized conversation. You both respect each other, and just talk without yelling. And you pretty much agree as to the end-effect we'd (you'd) all like to see.
Excellent interview.

Saw part of MXPX hanging out in my dorm bldg 😆
What a time to be alive
I was in a christian hardcore band in 1999. We definitely would have made fun of bands like Five Iron Frenzy, MXPX, Ghoti Hook, etc, because they weren't "heavy" (and we were listening to NIV, Overcome, xDisciplex). It's really silly to think about now. We did even open for Slick Shoes on new years eve 1999. Lol. Of course, I'm agnostic now. Growing up in church was enough to make me never want to be involved in organized religion again 😁🙏
Seattlite here! Attended MXPX shows all through high school!

First of, "Ghoti Hook" is FISH Hook, and MXPX and Five Iron Frenzy are both dope, but Showbread is a band I love beyond all others in the Christian music scene. It's a side band for the vocalist of FIF and it's way more wild haha

Well you need to quit that Mary Poppins fluff. We are not going to "make it." You soon will know what it's like to have God against you.

Phenomenal show!

He wasn't a Palestian because Palestine didn't exist in Jesus time yet nor did it become a cou try but a territory. Nice try.
Maybe start calling it what it actually is: *Judeo-Christian Nationalism*
Don't bring Judaism or the Jews into this. When Christians use the word, "Judaeo-Christian" they're Judaizers from one viewpoint and appropriate Jewish culture from another viewpoint. And they support Israel but only as the landing pad for their Jesus upon his return (2,000 years late now!) and love Jews but only as people to be recruited into American Evangelical Christianity. Otherwise they dislike them and those infected with Nazi ideology despise them.
Why?
I would be interested in getting the guest book. I am an atheist, but I want to appeal to some to weaken it.
Historic Accident. Interesting.
at the core of christianity is superiority over other religions and the need to defend the faith.
andrew may have tempered most of the extremes of his religion, but i still would be leery of him and his ilk.
I once had a really awkward interaction with the lead singer from MXPX and I still cringe when I think of them. I was a teenager then, so no blame on him.😂
Thanks!
At 03:45 he talks about 'truth' and 'humility'. O, the irony.
