@@BUSHMANandBLUE Only wimps give up! 😂😉 Another good watch mate, especially nice to see those beautiful iced-up waterfalls. I think we all do things differently in life and make personal decisions in any given situation. I would have stayed put and simply tied & staked down the flapping doorway for the night. Once the tent is up it's always safer in my opinion to stay put rather than negotiating a winter descent, especially if it's near dusk or during darkness. Regarding the tent, regardless of conditions and your gloves' iced-up palms, a tent should withstand all the abuse you throw at it in all 4-season conditions...and that includes zips. Especially a brand new tent! I'd send it straight back to Fjallraven for a replacement with a note of how badly it failed. I've always let my sponsors know the positives and negatives of their products. On the other hand, when shit hits the shovel during a windy, cold ❄️time on the high moors...A good pint 🍺 plus the cosiness and hearty grub at a proper English country pub, becomes a very strong pulling force! 😅
@@Globetrotter-1 A very good post here and regardless of your self condemnation on forcing the zip Al', in my view this was "Equipment failure". On this type of tent that people expect will house them safe and sound in extreme conditions, this should NEVER have happened. It leads one to wonder about all the other parts of the tent that could fail at the worst time. If anyone should learn from this excellent video, it's the manufacturers of the tent that need to listen and act very quickly indeed to ensure that the same thing never happens again!
You are one of a kind Al. A tent fail and you still make one of the best camping videos out there. Felt like I was having a pint with you after a tough day of hiking. Epic!
i love the team work of you and blue. in outings you always look after each other. you picking up blue to go up the trail was what teammenship is. you help each other (then you picked him up for over the gate. iyou helped blue but as i watch all your other vids (and this one.) i watch as you take sometimes blues line on a trail, dogs (animals) do not take the hardest route. blue being at ground level can see flat or easier routes, so as he goes i watch you take his route. yes you are watching your step but as you guys work together you do it unknowingly because you trust and help each other. blue does it because he knows what he's doing and you watch, maybe unknowingly but you do. great mates both of you.
Not even a raging snow storm and a tent zipper fail can dampen a great and picturesque adventure with you and Blue. I loved the pub atmosphere and the food looked stick-to-your-ribs amazing. Bluey certainly deserved that rest by the fire. Glad you made it home safe and sound. Until next time, be well and give Blue a scratch behind the ears for me.
Love your attitude Al. It is what it is. No use getting mad and blow’n a gasket. You got yourselves safely down off the mountain. Glad You & Blue are safe at the Inn. I’m blown away with all that food you have. Can’t beat British pub food!
Hi Alan. Have loved following your travels with the amazing Blue for many months! I had to smile watching this as I was in the Blue Bell in Kettlewell just yesterday lunchtime after scattering my Dad's ashes in the hills above the village that morning with my family. Like you, my Dad was a proud Yorkshireman and he adored this area. Our food was fab too and that big log burner is amazing! Take good care and carry on the fantastic work with your videos
Now that was definitely a wild one Al! The zipper fail was a real bummer for sure. Just glad that you and ol' Blue are safe. Looked like things didn't turn out too bad though with a warm fire, hot meal, and a good brew to enjoy 👍 Cheers brother.....
I love the way you you subvert the narrative of the single camera operator, and then include you retrieving the camera. After all that is the reality of these kinds of videos. Thank you for showing the reality. Great job Sir. Keep doing what you are doing.
Amazing as always and such a pleasure it was to meet you at the National Outdoor Expo and thanks for taking the time to chat and the photo too . Lovely to see the beautiful Kettlewell too , keep em coming and thanks again
Al, what an absolute pain. That tent looked like it was a life form in its own right! Having said that, it looked pretty good when it as up, but that’s no good if it doesn’t protect you, especially in weather like that. As you’ve always said in the past, safety is always paramount, regardless of the conditions, so you did the right thing both for you and Blue. Sure he didn’t mind getting back to the brmm brmm! Looked blooming freezing! Love that you’re doing this all for us as well-especially the food at the end! Thought that was a bit cruel to be fair, but its really appreciated! Take care mate!
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Yeah, the food looked amazing. Made me really hungry!! Still, you deserved it after that walk up and back down the pike, especially in that awful weather. Looking forward to the next vid. Look after yourselves!
Yes it’s worth it!! Love watching you guys out in the wild weather. I live in Australia in the north so it’s pretty much HOT! all year round. Sometimes it gets to 17 deg Celsius in winter which is totally freezing for us! Would love to experience what you guys do!❤
Zips on tents are my biggest concern. Never underestimate the power of well made zips on a tent! One of the things I like best about my Durston tent is the zip, it never snags or catches, I have to be really careful with my Abisko lite 1 though as it catches all the time if not.
Those snowy hills and stream area were so beautiful. I'm impressed that you even considered trying to stay a night in such high winds -- not only hard to set up, but I wouldn't have gotten a wink of sleep in conditions that noisy with wind. Your tent failure situation reminded me why I've shifted over from backpacking and tent camping, to trips where I go dayhiking and sleep every night on a real bed in my camper van. Nothing like a metal (or wooden) structure to protect you from the elements! So much more cozy and comfy than a tent. I do not look back fondly on nights spent with tent fabric flapping furiously around or moisture condensing on the sagging tent walls, or the leaks, uncomfortably cramped conditions and all the other tent hassle. Glad to be done with that.
You should try the Nortent Vern PC 1. It's a pollycotton tent that is quick to pitch in the most demanding conditions. It's warmer in cold weather and cooler in hot weather versus silnylon. Yes it's heavier than a silnylon tent, but bombproof it is. What I do in severe weather is get the base of the tent staked out before inserting the poles. Love your video's and stringent focus on safety. Throw some snow from me for Blue.
I asked exactly that question and you answered it. It seemed to me that staking the tent down first would have been teh way to go in such high wind conditions.
Took delivery of a Keb Dome 2 today. Took it out to check that my disabled body can manage putting it up (yup!). What a fab piece of kit. I am looking forward to testing it for real on my next trip. It is well worth the expense. It has replaced a not so good after all, Hilleberg nammatj-2.... Ps. The distructions say to peg out the tent in three places ( not tied to a bag Al 😊).
You probably won't see my comment, but even if it was a less than perfect outing, the end sure seemed Cosy, warm and definitely well deserved!! Thanks for sharing the day with us, and as a side note... I'm so used to an American accent that when I watch your videos it's like switching from AM to FM radio. I have to dial my ear in... 😅 That's said... I'm from South Africa! Take care, I'm looking forward to the next one!
One of your best videos though imo. Although I didn't work out how you'd planned. Many folk might have saw their ass and ended the video up there. However you turned it into something positive and we ended up going to the pub with you and blue for tea 😂! From a viewers perspective I thought it was brilliant!

Don't humble yourself, some tents are just too weak for our herculean strength. 💪💪😎 (at least that's how I pat myself on my back every time I accidentally destroy something, haha.) Looking forward to next one.
Thanks Alan. We love your content because your real mate. S**t happens even with the best gear. Fyall Raven is great gear. But we are human eh 😂 props for even getting it up in that wind
Wow Al. Very harsh conditions. I bet that pint tasted extra good ! For me in that wind i would struggle with that tent design. Pole sleeves on a dome are a nightmare to get the tent up in wind. No doubt very strong once up, but that would be pitching before the storm hits. You cannot beat a build from ground up clip system in high winds. A tunnel design with pole sleeves a close second. Fair play to you for even getting the tent pitched in the first place. As you say every day in the hills is a school day and that’s one of the reasons I love getting out. No two days are the same. Cheers mate.
Would it have helped (in terms of setting up the tent) to stake all 6 corners to the ground first? We hope that Fjallraven gets the zipper fixed so that you can use and enjoy the tent! We ordered an Abisko dome 2 (still waiting to receive it), which is a less heavy-duty tent, but same basic design. So, we are super curious to see how your tent will perform in the wind. Be safe, have fun, thanks for all your great video's.
Great choice in tent 😉. Ideally and normally I’d peg it down first but it kept pulling the pegs out so I got the poles in to try keep it’s shape. It’s a two man tent that needed two people to pitch in that really 👍
I can't wait to get up to Yorkshire and explore not been there for years, although I love hiking in Dorset, Exmoor and Dartmoor a new adventure is needed 😁
Gnarly, and beautiful. Had many a wonderful time around Kettlewell, at The Blue Bell, Buckden Pike, Knipe Scar, Great Whernside, and all over there, LOVE IT! Will have to revisit it one day. What a battle, but you did your best, you WON the battle, and you will win the war..... Subscribed and hit the bell just to see you try it. Good luck. That day it snowed a couple weeks ago, I was walking to work at 5:45am, I just wished so much I wasn't working and I could be out in it like you guys and gals that do..... Rock on! \,,/
Don’t fret about winter life without the Disco. Autocar magazine did a snow test with identical Ford cars - 1 with 4 wheel drive and 1 with only the front wheel drive option. Snow tyres on front wheel drive performed better than 4 wheel with normal tyres. Happy van camping Al.
Well that was a fun walk Al. To bad about that zipper. The fact that you tried to set it up in 50 mph wind shows determination which is always a good thing, but mother nature always has the last word on any adventure. Be well and safe my friend ✌️
Not a wasted trip; you got to test your gear. It's good to know what you can expect from your equipment and clothing. You got back in one piece, so the clothing did their job. Big hugs to Blue.
I came from a tranquil pitch in snowy surroundings with The one and only Solo Summiteer to a "tranquil scream" with You and the fabulous Blue. Still, as always a great video and Your supper by the way looked absolutely yummy. Stay safe And now I'm off to Whinlatter Forest with Mal
Pity about the tent failure - happily (for the viewer) we were treated to some amazing winter footage so not all bad! Glad you two returned safe - any excuse for a pint!
What an adventure, that was some bad luck with the team. It would have been a great test for that Tent in the show & wind. That was definitely the correct call to back up and head back, that would have been an unconfinable night if you had stayed. The pub food looked great will have to check the walk & the pub out next time I am up north. Good to see you both back safe and sound. Looking forward to the next adventure.😊
Hi Al, I've been following your content for a while and its good to see the channel growing! As you're probably aware the x-mid tents are becoming very popular and while a lot of videos are on TH-cam about them, I haven't seen anyone put one through the sort of conditions that you test tents. Would love to see you do a video on this and I'm sure it would be a very popular video. Keep up the good work :)
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Yeah it seems to have an almost cult like following. They seem to be an all around kind of tent than specific to a certain use, so it might be trying to cover too much. However would be cool to see what it can handle. Side note, i have to say your fold out cook setup is a really neat idea!
That was a fantastic video. Even the zip fail was all part of a thrilling adventure IMO. Blue was a star as always and that pub food looked amazing, it made me hungry! Thanks ♥️👍
Afternoon Al & Blue…….if you’re worried about using the Caddy in snow conditions, get some “snow socks” for it, I’ve used mine twice , absolutely brilliant in those conditions, and far easier than chains…..takes no more than 3 minutes to fit both to the front drive tyres….yes they recommend no more than 30 mph when fitted, but at least you can get out of trouble ….👍🇮🇲
Amazing how blue climbs those rocks, couldn't even get my beagle into the car yesterday, had to buy him a sausage and a piece of bacon as he was getting aggressive, nearly had to walk him back from Sedgefield to Stockton, 10 miles, he s a little swine when he wants to be!!!
You made the right call. Perhaps Fate, decided 'not tonight, Al'. You have many more adventures to look forward to! Sunday would never be the same without my weekly installment of Bushman and Blue. ☺️
Didn't test the tent but got to test that pie. Looked delicious. Not what you set out to do but lessons in there for all of us & always good to spend some time in your company Al and Blue 👍
The same thing happened to me on my first wild camp, zip broke on my tent. Luckily I had a spare tarp with me, so I stretched it over the broken door and used the other door, it worked and even kept the rain out over night! The pub grub looked good!
Thanks for sharing when things go wrong. Some people would just not show it. You gave me the Screaming ab-dabs walking up the cliff by the river. If blue or you had falling in no more Video for the Channel. Keep up the amazing work & stay safe. PS what would have happened if the Zip broke in the middle of the night when you or Blue went out to have a Wee? Also some amazing footage.
Oh Al! What a day!! I mean, the walk looked great (despite the wind) and you had a cracking dinner rather than a packet meal so lets call it a win overall :) lessons learnt though and onwards to the next adventure
The scenery on the way up was stunning, definitely enhanced by the snow cover. Shame about the tent zip but that meal at the end must have made up for it!
Continuous pole sleeves are stressful in strong winds - much prefer the clip system. Unfortunately, my Hille Unna has continuous pole sleeves and I’m always anxious about it blowing away at the critical moment when pitching above 25mph !!
This might be a very useful, approximate guide, I think for those planning solo summits with a full sleeve dome tent 👍25mph is also where I start to struggle pitching the abisko dome 2, though I’m still learning the best method for pitching this design solo
the one i have didn't do that (and mine is a nicer color) nice that you just cracked on with the video and well you definitely keep your integrity doing that it was still a nice and entertaining video and i was sort of curious about what you would think about using it
@@BUSHMANandBLUE but you did do what i didn't expect you to do. i thought i was the only one stupid enough to carry that tent up a mountain. i tok mine up Kebnekaise and i even carry a footprint. thought you would pitch your low ..... but you didn't. i carry quite a lot of heavy tents on my camps because i need the strength and i like the space
Good on ya Al, still smiling despite feeling gutted. Thought you did well to even get the tent pitched on what was a wicked looking day. Terrain looked fantastic with that snow, we've still hardly had any here (Leicestershire). Keep on enjoying your adventures :)
Appreciate that you still posted this one . The reality that occasionally the goal posts need to move. And knowing when to abandon ship . Still lovely footage though . Look forward to more of the van build. .
The classic `Pub Recovery` scenario - nice one! I have put that zip fail in the memory bank (what about a pair of those snug fitting waterproof builders gloves just for setting up?) - thanks again.
would have been good to see how you adapted to make it trough friends years ago and myself did the same thing at crows nest yorkshire with a cotton rige tent we used the floor tarp to peg over the door and made it through the night
Always enjoy your videos...(.that pie looks bloody amazing BTW 😂), great to see that despite the gale force winds , snow and broken tent zip you always have a smile on your face 😊
It was a good choice to make, and that meal definitely made it all worth it. Glad you guys are safe. Right now I am in bed being crowded my brother's Golden Retrievers who don't follow commands and can't take a hint that I need more than 6 inches of room on a king-sized bed. Wishing they had the sense and discipline of your Blue! They are very sweet but very goofy!
Well your certainly keeping it real there Al, showing us folks how important it is to know when to make that call to bail. You live for another day, hope to see you back out again real soon. 😉
My word that looked very windy and cold Al. Great to watch and I am always in admiration of your adventures. I can just imagine how difficult it would have been putting the tent up in that wind. I have never owned or seen one of those tents in the flesh, but I assume you can't peg it out first and build it up from the bottom like with an Allak or Staika? Bet you enjoyed that pint!!

Be safe, have fun, thanks for all your great video's.
Great choice in tent 😉. Ideally and normally I’d peg it down first but it kept pulling the pegs out so I got the poles in to try keep it’s shape. It’s a two man tent that needed two people to pitch in that really 👍
So glad you are both safe 😮
Loving the scenery ❤
I can't wait to get up to Yorkshire and explore not been there for years, although I love hiking in Dorset, Exmoor and Dartmoor a new adventure is needed 😁
That's the first time I've seen you even remotely stressed/pissed off in any of your posts. Good on ya matey. You just keep on smiling
😂 I actually was talking to the tent with a few swear words attached 😂
Gnarly, and beautiful.
Had many a wonderful time around Kettlewell, at The Blue Bell, Buckden Pike, Knipe Scar, Great Whernside, and all over there, LOVE IT! Will have to revisit it one day.
What a battle, but you did your best, you WON the battle, and you will win the war..... Subscribed and hit the bell just to see you try it. Good luck.
That day it snowed a couple weeks ago, I was walking to work at 5:45am, I just wished so much I wasn't working and I could be out in it like you guys and gals that do..... Rock on! \,,/
Thanks Jay. A lovely part of the world and even though I had to get back to safety it was an awesome adventure
Hello brother, we watch your videos with love and appreciation, you make very good videos, we wish you continued success Greetings from Turkey🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
Thanks for sharing an awesome adventure and the delicious looking food!!!
Wow!!! That’s some wicked wind! Thank you so much for going out there in that to try out a tent..
My daughter is called Carmen 🥰
Don’t fret about winter life without the Disco. Autocar magazine did a snow test with identical Ford cars - 1 with 4 wheel drive and 1 with only the front wheel drive option. Snow tyres on front wheel drive performed better than 4 wheel with normal tyres. Happy van camping Al.
Interesting 👍👍👍
Well that was a fun walk Al. To bad about that zipper. The fact that you tried to set it up in 50 mph wind shows determination which is always a good thing, but mother nature always has the last word on any adventure. Be well and safe my friend ✌️
It was a nice walk out. I made the most of it😬. Thanks Norm.
Thanks for jumping over that frozen gate twice. That pie looked banging!!
😂I’m glad you appreciate my efforts😬
I was looking forward to seeing Blue enjoying a pint with you at the Inn!
What wasn't a fail was the beautiful climb up. I was mesmerized. Stay safe.
It was still an awesome adventure and we loved it😬
Omg that food looks lush 😮
Not a wasted trip; you got to test your gear. It's good to know what you can expect from your equipment and clothing. You got back in one piece, so the clothing did their job. Big hugs to Blue.
Yes it was still a great adventure 👍
I came from a tranquil pitch in snowy surroundings with The one and only Solo Summiteer to a "tranquil scream" with You and the fabulous Blue. Still, as always a great video and Your supper by the way looked absolutely yummy.
Stay safe
And now I'm off to Whinlatter Forest with Mal
Thanks mate. Enjoy Whinlatter👌
Thanks Glenn. It wasn’t to be but it was still an awesome adventure 👌
I’ve never actually seen one in person. Might be a bit of a hype tent I feel but I’d definitely test it properly 😉
Good call not staying you and blue are safe and that’s what matters , lm sure there will be plenty of more adventures , we’ll I hope so x
Always more adventures 😬. Thanks Lynne
Despite being amazing, that looks like a ‘stew with a lid’ rather than a pie! Cracking adventure.
Thank goodness your both ok. ❤❤❤
Brilliant. Looked like you were wrestling with a fishing brolly up there! Best off in the pub after that ordeal. 🍺 Cheers, Ozzy, Gloucester.
That was a fantastic video. Even the zip fail was all part of a thrilling adventure IMO. Blue was a star as always and that pub food looked amazing, it made me hungry! Thanks ♥️👍
It was still a lovely day out😬. Thank Rosie.
Interesting mate I’ll have a look thanks 👊
I would so love to visit and hike with you someday. Those little pubs and retaurants are really cool. The hiking looks absolutely gorgeous.
There are some lovely places and having a pub at the end is always lovely.
Hey you be safe out there I in joying your video.good video.
You made the right call. Perhaps Fate, decided 'not tonight, Al'. You have many more adventures to look forward to! Sunday would never be the same without my weekly installment of Bushman and Blue. ☺️
Awwww thanks 😊
You properly earned that pie at the end
Didn't test the tent but got to test that pie. Looked delicious. Not what you set out to do but lessons in there for all of us & always good to spend some time in your company Al and Blue 👍
It was still a lovely adventure for us both😬
The same thing happened to me on my first wild camp, zip broke on my tent.
Luckily I had a spare tarp with me, so I stretched it over the broken door and used the other door, it worked and even kept the rain out over night!
The pub grub looked good!
Sometimes you have to make do… I made do with the pub😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Wise choice! 😂
Atleast blue had a good walk. Fail Raven springs to mind. Hope it’s all fixed now 👍🏼
😂it was definitely my fault one of which I won’t be doing again. I can’t wait to get it out again for a test😬
You just have to make decisions and act accordingly to the situation. It was a straight forward walk back👍👍👍
Oh Al! What a day!! I mean, the walk looked great (despite the wind) and you had a cracking dinner rather than a packet meal so lets call it a win overall :) lessons learnt though and onwards to the next adventure
Thanks Nic 😊. It was an awesome day regardless
Yes about 25mph is when things are a struggle for definite 👊
This might be a very useful, approximate guide, I think for those planning solo summits with a full sleeve dome tent 👍25mph is also where I start to struggle pitching the abisko dome 2, though I’m still learning the best method for pitching this design solo
the one i have didn't do that (and mine is a nicer color) nice that you just cracked on with the video and well you definitely keep your integrity doing that it was still a nice and entertaining video and i was sort of curious about what you would think about using it
It’s an awesome tent I’m just stupid… although you live and learn😉
Look forward to more of the van build. .
Thanks mate it was definitely the right decision to go to the pub😂
🤣
The classic `Pub Recovery` scenario - nice one! I have put that zip fail in the memory bank (what about a pair of those snug fitting waterproof builders gloves just for setting up?) - thanks again.
Even marigolds would have helped I think👌
would have been good to see how you adapted to make it trough friends years ago and myself did the same thing at crows nest yorkshire with a cotton rige tent we used the floor tarp to peg over the door and made it through the night
Yes sometimes you can adapt. In that weather though… game over 😂
That’s not a failure al, it’s a billy bonus with a pie like that 😂, great watch again al and tell blue he’s the best dog out there 👍👍
Yes I love making the most of it and going literally where the wind blows me😂
You and Blue definitely know how to push that boat out.😳
😂we try
Always enjoy your videos...(.that pie looks bloody amazing BTW 😂), great to see that despite the gale force winds , snow and broken tent zip you always have a smile on your face 😊
It was a good choice to make, and that meal definitely made it all worth it. Glad you guys are safe. Right now I am in bed being crowded my brother's Golden Retrievers who don't follow commands and can't take a hint that I need more than 6 inches of room on a king-sized bed. Wishing they had the sense and discipline of your Blue! They are very sweet but very goofy!
😂 I know that feeling
@@BUSHMANandBLUE 🤣
I think this could be your new hit video! What a ride eh boys?
I just enjoyed where the day took me😊
I'm like 5mins in...it's the most amazing video...and your crazy please be careful pal
Well your certainly keeping it real there Al, showing us folks how important it is to know when to make that call to bail. You live for another day, hope to see you back out again real soon. 😉
Thanks mate It’s really the first time I’ve failed a camp but it was still an awesome adventure 👌
Fab film ! I'd have camped in the Landy and a few more beers in that lovely pub !
😂 I considered it
What an awesome way to end not such an awesome day👍
My word that looked very windy and cold Al.
Thanks. It’s a bit different design and would benefit from having two people in that wind😂
