      Mr. Riedl i usually hate teachers but you remind me of my favourite 8th grade math teacher he was so calm and was a really good teacher i wish more teachers were like that most of them well around me at least are extremely rude.

    Friday meeting sounds great! We do similar stuff in our middle school advisory. Also it's super impressive how organized and structured you've made everything. While I'm glad to be in middle school, this made me reminisce my years as a 5th grade teacher. Your students are lucky to have you.

    I just got hired for my first teaching job, so am looking around for different inspiration. I just want to say, I love your third rule! Something I love to say to people is "maturity is knowing when it's okay to be immature". It catches people off guard and gets their attention, and what I mean by it is what your third rule states. There's a time for goofing off, and maturity is knowing when that time is.

    Wow!! The seating arrangement is absolutely AMAZING!! It's totally something I would've loved in school and that would've been so helpful because I had scoliosis as a kid and was in constant back pain especially in school chairs. I ended up getting homeschooled the last 2 years of school after my surgery because I couldn't sit in a chair for longer than an hour. All the different seating choices are absolutely awesome for any kid with back problems!

      +Emily Martin Thanks so much!! I actually made the name tag pencil holder thingies. I'm planning on making a future video how to make them, so stay tuned. Basically, i got the wood from Home Depot, cut it, painted it, then printed, colored, and laminated the name tags.

  • @Banyo__

    The internet randomly led me here, but I watched the entire video because I found it very interesting the way you honor students different needs within a classroom. When I was a student, it was one way of teaching, and sitting, and learning, and that was it. I knew a lot of kids, especially in middle school, who suffered under that type of regime, but watching this, it gives me hope that more and more teachers will adapt and rid themselves of the rigid, and I'd say, outdated, methods of running a classroom. Best of luck with your teaching. Seems like you're doing a pretty good job so far.

    We have one of those timers in our classroom, which is great because being pre-k, they haven't really learned time yet. We are working on trying to get flexible seating in our classroom, 4 year olds in chairs is next to impossible some days. We just got some wobbly/fidget cushions in to place in our normal chairs.
    Love your classroom, and love your pez! I bet you are one of those teachers that makes a difference to children and one that they remember even after they are out of school.

    I am currently a junior in high school. When you talked about your students stuffing their desks. I was guilty of the same problem. So my teacher's solution was to use our "lockers" ( my school had cubbies in the classroom for bags no belongings) I really like your idea with the notebook boxes. Thanks for the nostalgia.

    I really liked seeing how an intermediate classroom is set up as opposed to a primary. I will be teaching intermediate this year, so I am gathering ideas for older students. I love the "book selfies" and hope to use that. I have a classroom bathroom for the first time in 19 years at my school and would like to use your bathroom flip chart ( I hope that's ok??). I plan to use the clips for where they are in the writing process (I think it will be a daily guide as well as a formative assessment of timing). Thanks so much.

    You have a beautiful class! Just wondered if you can make a short video about your class jobs and their descriptions-really like the team idea. Very 21st century- I'm going into year 27 of teaching and still moving into this century especially with the social media, the shelfies, etc. You seem to incorporate those aspects into your class. Well Done Mr. R!

      +Abigail Lawrence I'm planning to adjust the classroom teams a bit in the fall because I'll be doing more of a classroom economy style system. I'm planning on doing a video about that in the future. But here are the teams I used last year: Delivery Team, Photography Team, Tweet Team, Biology Team, Supply Team, Library Team, Sanitation Team, Inspection Team, Leadership Team, and the Attendance Officials.

    Hi I just came across your channel. I love this video. I'm going into my sophomore year as an education major. I love that you do flexible seating and classroom meetings. In one of my education classes last semester we had classrooms meetings everyday in the beginning of class. When I teach I'm definitely going have flexible seating and meetings. Is your school more lenient on flexible seating? I know that some schools unfortunately don't allow flexible seating in the classroom. I'm glad I came across your channel!

    • @Riedlteach
      @Riedlteach  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Julia Detmer Thanks Julia! Every school and every principal is different. Some are more lenient and some are not, so it really depends. Those are good questions to ask when you interview for a job. My school encourages me to do whatever I can to do my best as a teacher, so thankfully I have a lot of freedom.

    I'm a Virgo. I'm a neat freak and organization is key to keeping my brain happy (in other words, it calms my anxiety to a certain degree). Your classroom is beyond, BEYOND, perfect in my eyes! I have a ton of friends who became teachers, and had I not been swept up into the medical field, I had planned to become a teacher, too. (I'm kind of sadly glad I didn't ... our local school system has been overloaded and a lot of new teachers who don't want to move out of state, we making the hard decision to find other jobs. It breaks my heart.)

    You look like such a great teacher, I wish you were my teacher. And 1 question are the kids allowed to sit in the same seat the next week? The pez idea is very creative. Also that you supply the kids with school stuff is very kind, some kids can't afford school supplies. The hand signals are a wonderful idea because they don't need to interrupt the lesson. I really like your missing work sheet that would be so useful at my school

    • @Riedlteach
      @Riedlteach  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, the kids can choose whichever seat is available, and if it happens to be the seat they had last week then they can choose it again. :-) Thanks for watching!!!

    I have some questions about this. 1) what happens if a child chooses a standing desk for the week, but they don't want to stand all day every day? Do you have stools or chairs that are higher that fit the desk that they can choose to use when their legs get tired? 2) are there ever conflicts over who sits where ? How do you mitigate those conflicts? Also, how do you determine which children get first pick, and so on?

    • @Riedlteach
      @Riedlteach  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good questions. 1) If they get tired of standing, they are welcome to sit on the ground by their table or up at the front of the room. They have the option to use a clipboard to write on if they want. If some students complain about standing a long time, I usually tell them that I stand all day so they'll get used to it. heh. I had two stools, but they argued over them, so I confiscated them. They ended up sitting on the stools more than standing anyway, so I thought it was silly. 2) No, there aren't conflicts because I only let one student choose at a time. There is more disappointment than anything else because someone else picked a seat they wanted. Sometimes they think I'm being unfair about who I choose for the picking order, but I was as fair as possible. Last year I went down the roster... Week 1, Student 1 picks first, Student 2 picks second, etc. Week 2, Student 2 picks first, Student 3 picks second, etc. However, that was too predictable for them, so I created a more "random," less predictable chart so they don't know what's coming. 👍😊 Thanks for watching! Let me know if you have other questions.

      Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm not a teacher, I'm a child and youth care worker (so I work with high risk families) but stuff like this makes me really happy - to see teachers being more adaptable and accommodating in classrooms. Good for you, you seem like a really really wonderful teacher and I bet you make a difference for a lot of kids that come into your classroom.
