My brother who died two years ago was a mechanic for 55 years and repaired lawn equipment/small engines as a side job. He would have loved your down home technique and sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

If I remember right there's 12 inches per foot, so 120 inches would be 10 feet, not 12. So I think you were right the first time when you said 120 inch pounds would be 10 ft lbs. Would have liked to have seen the piston ring gap on the new rings to compare to the old one 😏

Rebuilding a Honda, GX 120 (low compression, 65#s). Thanks for all the good suggestions. One comment, while you were going over the OH valves, you said "set them to 5 and 7, or 6, tight and loose". What are 5 and seven, thousands? I think the issue with my motor is the valves were not clean.

@@RaleysSmallEngines Follow up. I think, in hindsight, that because there was a broken spring in the centrifugal clutch, now repaired, that I was trying to start motor while it was under load. Belt hidden so that didn't come to mind. I also learned that there is a compression relief valve internally on this motor so I never would have "good compression" numbers. Started first pull when all reassembled. Thanks again!!

  • @JOATD

Hello, thank you for this video! Very informative and awesome! I'm pretty handy but this one has me quite puzzled. I have a Honda GX160 motor and it will not start. I have cleaned the carburetor thoroughly. The spark plug has spark. The filter is clean. It has new gas/oil and the switch is set to on. I sprayed carburetor cleaner in the air filter and it acted like it wanted to start but did not. I took the valve cover off and the right side rocker was not on the push rod. Before I re-positioned the rocker, no gas would go to the spark plug. As soon as the rocker was back in place and I pulled the cord a couple times gas made it's way to the spark plug, but the engine still will not start. The motor sat with no oil for about a year, worked just fine before it sat idle. The only mods I've done to the engine was remove the governor and disable the oil level sensor by unplugging the yellow cord. I would appreciate any of your expertise or advice you have on this issue, thank you in advance for your time.

I run 10W30 semi synthetic engine oil in my dads Honda GSV190 lawnmower engine which I have just replaced the piston rings in, it's equivalent to Hondas SJ oil.
It smoked up a bit after the first hour or so of mowing but I dumped some oil out of it because I thought that it was a bit too overfull,it hasn't smoked up majorly after 3 hours of mowing time, the rings are still seating into the cylinder.
The same ring compressor which I assembled a Nissan RB30 engine which has 86mm diameter cylinders & the 3.8 litre Buick V6 engines which have about a 101mm diameter cylinder seemed to work well for the 69mm diameter GSV190 piston, rings & cylinder !

I have a Honda gx390 with the aluminium pushrod end chewed up.
Valves appear to be still intact and in shape.
Can I drop new pushrods in and reset rockers?
Do you think overheating at some point would of bent pushrod.
What is the minimum psi on a compression test for small Honda engines.
I do have another gx390 that as stood for a couple of yrs.

Sir, I am following your video as I am rebuilding my gx120, after disassembly, I noticed the exhaust valve is smaller in diameter than the compression valve. Is this normal?

    • @RaleysSmallEngines
      @RaleysSmallEngines  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for watching my friend. Yes that is normal on almost all engines.

@@RaleysSmallEngines thanks so much for the quick response, watching your video gave me the confidence to diagnose, tear down and repair a perfectly good engine. The previous owner must’ve left out the gasket on the carb as the head and top of the piston looks like someone filled the cylinder with dirt. After cleaning everything in an ultrasonic cleaner, everything looks brand new, no scarring of the cylinder wall, good crosshatching and the valves look good too. I ordered lapping compound, rings and will reassemble the motor. Thanks again for a great informative video!!

    • @RaleysSmallEngines

Most likely the valves are not adjusted correctly causing the compression release to not work

So the gasket left out under the air filter, it looks to me like as loose as that one fits if rubbed with grease and two put on rather than just one it would seem to even seal a bit better, and the bloke replacing or cleaning the filter would be more likely to put it back if there twas another also. Of course if that careless while they have their mind focused on the job rather than maintenance it probably wouldn't matter if a zero turn mower it was on rather than a push mower. Not sure what the hps are on this motor but the piston looks like enough for a zero turn machine that might run all day if they left that sealing device off. The rest of the engine seemed too new to have run a long time. If ya'll leave off an air filter on a dirt road in an auto, just running ten miles can ruin an engine. When St Helen's blew up a Polish friend of mine was fishing and drove through 3" ash to get home and his car smoked and used oil when he got back. What people in the basin were doing was greasing the gasket under the air filter plus stacking two on top of each other like in pickups. The ash was highly abrasive with crystalline silicon sharp hard dust. Did a number on your lungs too. I walked across my yard the day after and with morning dew on the grass my feet felt prickly, probably from the sulfer.

We have a Honda water pump with the GX160 . Stopped using it then 3 weeks later went back to use it and NOTHING . No compression . Took off the rocker cover and found the inlet valve had 15 mm of play and the rocker itself was just floating on the top . Valve was not even opening . Had anyone ever come across this as the motor was running then it was not . Make me think my motor has been sabotaged . Running now but for the life of me I cannot understand how it went so slack . Everything was tight too . Very odd

You need to be more descriptive in what had 15mm of play and what you did to remove it. I don't know how anything in the head can have 15mm of play.
