  • In this video series we fly the gorgeous Carenado Daher Socata TBM 850 from Charlotte, NC to 308 NM to Tangier Island, Va..
    In this part 1 of 3 we introduce the TBM 850 and perform a "Cold & Dark" start up on the GA Ramp at Charlotte Douglas International. The flight will be departing Charlotte at 6:30 am in mid January, so it is really cold and dark at start-up.
    The Daher Socata TBM 850 model used in this series includes Service Pack 2 and is available from Carenado at www.carenado.com . For tech support on the Carenado TBM 850 please submit a request to Carenado or refer to the "Unofficial Carenado Support" Forum at AVSIM.
    All ATC communications for this IFR flight are included to provide a more realistic flight experience. ATC chatter is recorded from ATCLive.net
    The Tangier Island scenery is freeware scenery by Brian Martin available in the AVSIM Library. Here's the link: library.avsim.net

    Just recently came across your channel, enjoying it thoroughly. I have also added the TBM850 to my flight sim inventory, and looking forward to flying it. I am using your video as a tutorial, for I am not all that up to date on the Garmin, thank you.

      Roger that 2018paulrobbinx... I tried a soft shell crab sandwich on my one and only real world trip there. Delicious!!! I think the TBM is my favorite no fuss airplane right now... It's easy to jump in a get the go on whenever the mood strikes... it makes a great personal airliner for a pilot to knock around in. Thanks for checking in and best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    This, even after three years is helpful and entertaining to watch, especially when the ATC reads back "TBM 0 Sierra Nevada, read back correct..." @ 27:50

      @FSMaNiA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks much Robert! Just curious, what did you find humorous about “read back correct”? I try to be funny a lot but was I actually funny without trying? Cheers from Tim

    • @robertgrant4720
      @robertgrant4720 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FS MaNiA it is the TBM 0 Sierra Nevada....it should have said TBM 0 Sierra November, but all your stations were reading it back like that. Read back to Real ATC a Sierra Nevada, they’ll send you back to school...LOL . So, it wasn’t you that was funny, but the text to read program I guess or whatever you are using. Nonetheless you are entertaining to listen to all the while educational and trivial at the same time. I have to check more of these videos of yours, they’re really good.

      I understand. In this video I was both pilot and ATC. I used a voice altering program to record the various controllers and dubbed them in during post editing. I learned/memorized the phonetic alphabet 40 years ago. I think some of those neurological pathways have grown over with weeds. I have no idea how Nevada slipped in there? I think it’s called getting Oscar Lima Delta 😎. Thanks again! Tim

      Hi Michael and thank you very much for the kind words! It is great to be back to be sure. I really missed our community of flight simmers. I have published the final leg of the Brazil to Wichita Ferry Flight in the Phenom 300 and also managed a flight from Wichita to Charlotte in the CJ2. I'm editing part 2 of the TBM video right now... so back to it... Thanks for chiming in and stay tuned my friend! Cheers from Tim G., FS MaNiA

    Hi Tim, this one looks like a really good one! loved it!
    What a starter!!!!! The aerobatics was great and I have been learning a lot again from watching, for exemple how to hide the CAS in the PFD, and did not know Tangier island at all as well. Waiting Episode 2 now.
    Have a great day, cheers. Vincent

      Hey Vincent, Just realized I missed this comment. Yeah, I learned the declutter the PFD trick by combing through the AVSIM "unofficial" Carenado support forum. They have a special forum for each of Carenado's aircraft. By reading through the post you can learn a lot of tips, tricks, techniques, etc.
      Episode 2 and 3 are complete as you now know. Thanks for coming along on this flight my friend. Cheers, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    i think the combination of a "nighttime" take-off and daytime landing will make it an interesting watch, as there are more procedures to take into account.

      Hi cantsolvesudokus, I just finished editing part 2... it will take about 45 minutes to render, 30 minutes to upload,, then TH-cam processes for another 30 minutes. It's late now so I will probably end up publishing first thing tomorrow.
      I did a night departure form Cold Bay, Alaska on the Flight1 King Air B200 series. I love to fly early or late in the day when the sun is low. The air is normally much smoother at dusk and dawn and it is nice to see a sunrise/sunset from altitude.
      Thanks for your encouragement.. stay tuned and best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    This is one of my favorites in my hanger. Watching Stevo1kinevo sold me on it. It would be awesome to have one but I'm a realist so I'll have to settle for the sim version. I've enjoyed watching your videos. My father in law flies the Phenom 300 so I'm also partial to it as well.

      Hi Douglas, I'm also a fan of Stevo1kinevo (I gave him a plug in the KFLL to KICT leg of the FS MaNiA Phenom 300 series). I think he does a superb job with his videos. He is the reason I chose the TBM for this series. He reminded me what an great airplane the TBM is. Cudos to your father-in-law for being a Phenom 300 driver. Does his have the G1000... or the G3000??? Thanks for chiming in. Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

      G3000. It's a beautiful plane inside and out. I was able to check one of them out when he was parked at KFAT, not too far from where I live, overnight for maintenance. What a ride! Just wish I could have went with him to Brazil to ferry one back to the US. Conflicting schedules.

      Hi Alan, one thing Stevio1 always does is tap the breaks before retracting them. I don't use traditional rudder pedals toe brakes so I can never remember to tap the brakes with my joy stick trigger. At any rate, it's all good. My tires will probably still last a lot longer than Stevio1's tires. Part 2 in the works now... Hope to finish it this evening.

      Thanks Christopher, I have seen a little of Jordan's work and I like his channel very much. I have a lot of hours flying every jet PMDG has released as well as a few of the other developers heavies. I have been working my way to featuring a PMDG aircraft on the FS MaNiA channel and that should happen in the near future. There are just so many airplanes to choose from and so many places to fly! A great problem to have. Thanks for chiming in here. Kindest regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    • @ChristopherMangels

      No no, I did not mean that you should do more jet videos! I was just saying that Jordan says "going ahead" the whole time when he starts up a jet. 😊 (and he's still great)
      Please keep doing videos with bizjets and turbines! That's a great niche. Next time take the TBM from Ft. Lauderdale Executive to the Bahamas - just like Steve!

    Greetings Tim!
    I just picked up the TBM 850 and am really enjoying it! Great vid and looking forward to the sequels. BTW ... What is the ATC clearance and ground controller voice you're using in the vid? Is that VoxATC or ? I use PilotEdge most of the time, but am interested in what you're using in this vid. Sometimes I really don't feel like logging in to PilotEdge, but would like some sort of ATC interaction when flying the sim. Please share. Thanks!

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey COMtnPilot! I think you will really enjoy the TBM 850 as a personal airliner. It is a joy to fly and it is a great looking airplane.
      I am actually creating my own ATC for this flight from a combination of live ATC recordings (LiveATC.net) and my own voiceovers that have been "morphed" (to sound like other people) for the specific TBM 850SN calls. It's a fair amount of work to make it all come together for a video, however, there was a time when I would act as controller and pilot in the same voice. That sounded like I was a crazy pilot talking to myself. This ATC is the best compromise I have found to date.
      I flew with "Radar Contact" for a while, but I don't like the robotic sounding controller voices.
      I have flown on VATSIM in the past as well as served as a Tower Controller at KATL. I am planning a future VATSIM video for the FS MaNiA channel. From experience I think it's important to carefully select the departure and destination airports, day of the week, and time of day to ensure the best VATSIM experience. I was flying into Chicago, Ohare (KORD) one evening on final approach when the controller signed off to go to bed... arrrgghhh!
      I really like what the PilotEdge guys are doing. That's probably the most realistic ATC experience going for flight simulator. I do have plans to fly Westward in the near future so I may give them a closer look.
      Thanks for the comment and question. Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    By the way where does the ATC/Ground communication come from, is it a subscribed service?

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dane, I see that you already found the answer to this question, however, I will add the answer here again for the benefit of anyone else who might want to know.
I flew some with "Radar Contact" years ago, but I don't like the robotic controller voices for a video.
      My hope is the ATC will add another level of realism to the video as well as help others wanting to learn more about ATC communications. The reality is you can't fly IFR without talking to ATC.
      Thank much for the comment and question Dane. I am uploading Part 3 of 3 as I type this. Should be published within an hour or so. Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

      Hi hjp, I was not on VATSIM. I actually created my own ATC for this flight. I used a combination of real world ATC from LiveATC.net and my own voice for specific ATC clearances. I have some software I used to morph my voice into the various controller's. It takes a bit more work to pull it off but I like to make the video as realistic as possible. Thank you very much for your feedback and questions. Best regards, Tim G, FS MaNiA

      Hi Roberto, I'm glad I get to fly them both in flight sim world. They each have strengths. The PC-12 is great for getting in and out of tight places, grass strips, pretty much anywhere you want to go that is rugged terrain. The TBM is FAST! If I had to choose, I would take the TBM with the Garmin G1000 avionics. But really, they are both great airplanes. Thanks for checking in. Best regards, Tim

      On the top right side of the Primary Flight Display ( PFD) there you will see the com 1 & 2 frequencies. Just to the right of those is a knob for tuning the frequency as well as a button to flip active/standby positions. I think if you press the tuning knob it switch tuning between Com 1 & Com 2. There is a portion of the video where I demonstrate the procedure by tuning the frequencies for departure. Hope that helps! Cheers, Tim

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Timothy, Thank you for the encouragement. I am not currently connected to Vatsim on this flight. I have created my own ATC using a combination of live recordings and voice overs for specific instructions to TBM 850SN. I have flown on VATSIM probably 10 years ago... I also did a stint as a Tower Controller at KATL. I liked flying VATSIM when the facilities are well staffed, however, I have had some great flights end poorly because a controller signed off to go to bed. I'm sure that it is crucial to carefully select the departure, destination, day, and time of day to get the best experience. I have a VATSIM flight on my to do list of videos. Thanks again and stay tuned. Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    Hello . How to make it on cold and dark mode ?

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and so sorry for the delayed response. Real life duties have kept me away from FS MaNiA channel duties. From memory, Carenado has a dialogue box that allows you to configure the aircraft for Cold and Dark. I can't remember exactly which key strokes will access the dialogue box but I'm pretty certain it's in the Carenado documentation. If not, check AVSIM user forums under Carenado, TBM 850. Hope that helps and best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    Is this aircraft Fps friendly? I don't wanna buy a plane that I will have 10 fps with...?

      It is just fine on my system. I suppose it depends on your system specs. You can check my specs out under the "About" tab on the FS MaNiA TH-cam Channel page. Hope that helps... Cheers, Tim

      Hi Rolf, I'm sorry for the delay in a response. I'm sure you've figured out how to add fuel by now. It's been so long since I created this video I'm really going on a fuzzy memory... I'm pretty sure you can use the drop down menu in FSX to add or subtract fuel. Hope that helps and cheers from Tim G. FS MaNiA

      Are you still flying with vintage FSX instead of MSFS 2020?

      @@FSMaNiA yep, at the moment I didn't have a decent pc and fsx was (and to be honest still is) pretty ok for me... Have to say, that was about two years ago, so msfs wasn't a thing and I wasn't that into aviation either. Btw, nice video. Cheers from Chile 🇨🇱

      @@Felix-qy1oi Roger that. It's been a good while since I flew this particular model but from memory; after engine start, set bleed to AUTO, dial pressurization controller to target cabin altitude i.e., 8,000. During descent dial pressurization controller to the destination airport elevation. That should take care of the cabin pressurization.
      Hope that helps and good day from the USA! Cheers, Tim

    I like the TBM 850 bit I dont care for the Carenado G1000, I find it to be a FPS hog and lacking a lot of functionality. TBH I havent flown it in a while so I dont know if anything has been changed recently.

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi CheapSkateSimmer, I don't have any frame rate problems with the Carenado TBM but admittedly the G1000 is dumbed way down. It would be difficult if not impossible to fly complex SID's or STAR's with this G1000... but I like it for knocking around in and out of smaller fields where there aren't any arrival or departure procedures. It will pretty much do about everything else I need. I have flown a lot of real world cross country trips with no GPS or autopilot... so this almost feels like cheating.
      For what it's worth I recently noticed Carenado's latest releases are now providing the option of integrating 3rd party navigators like the Flight1 GTN 750 or the Reality GNS 530. That's a step in the right direction. I haven't seen any 3rd party G1000 units and one can only dream of a G3000!
      Thanks for you comment. Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    • @FSMaNiA

      Hi John, I created my own ATC communications. The controller is actually me doing a voice over using a morphed voice. It's a crude way of adding ATC for a bit more realism. Cheers, Tim

      FS MaNiA Hi. Great video. As far as I'm aware, the FAA regulatory requirements for lighting only require anti-collision lights. This can be either red beacon style or white strobe style. (Or both). So I think the manufacturer gets to decide. I also feel like there could be much more to the story than this. :)

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Clark, Thanks for chiming in on this. I have always considered the rotating beacon and nav lights as the minimum lighting configuration for small aircraft. It is standard practice to start the beacon before starting the engine to let others on the ramp know what's about to happen. The strobes are a great upgrade for mid-air collision avoidance, but I can't remember flying any other aircraft that didn't have some type of beacon. At small airports it's fine to start the strobes before starting engine and taxi. At a busy airport like Charlotte Douglass, If everyone had their strobes going on the ramp... it would look like a 1980's Disco club! Pilots would find it difficult to see at night in a sea of strobes? Like you, I feel like we're missing something. :/

    • @clarklidbury8205
      @clarklidbury8205 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FS MaNiA I have a memory of flying an aeroplane with strobes only during flight training but I can't recall which one it was... Maybe the decathlon? Also I have another memory of taking my night rating in Australia and the instructor asking me if I could go flying if the beacon was broken. So we looked up the rule in the POH minimum equipment section and we could still depart as long as the strobes were functional... I think this is where I formed my opinion from. But I'll ask some of the gurus at work and see what they say. Cheers Tim - and thanks for producing such entertaining content!
