Cookie Monster sounds like kicking in a loud mid scoped over drive for a solo sound ! It works great at home practicing on your own or at sound check but when then the band all fire up at full volume the guitar gets lost in the mix and you end up burning out the power tubes in your amp from boosting all those low frequencies…! Hopefully by the end of this video you will have shown how to get the anatomical tube screamer working to push those mids in the vocals to get it to pop out in the mix…!

I didn't watch this video because i had pain, but because i was unsure if my technique was correct (which it seems it was).
But i just want to say that this is a great video! :)
I wish i would have found this a few years ago when i first started trying to learn distortion (took my quite a long time and a lot of different videos; your's have helped me tremendously (especially the one on Spencer Sotelo)).
This would at least have been exactly what i was looking for - and imagining someone who actually hurt themselves experimentning with distortion, this video would be perfect.
Fantastic video :) - i love how "easy" it is (once you've gotten the hang of it of course) just holding back air. I think that knowing that would help someone new to the subject a lot.

What I love about these scream lessons is that you are a vocalist who knows voice from wide variety of angles, not only from scream perspective, so there's experience and knowledge behind it. That's great to hear really neat sound of clean voice and then aggressive, yet emotional screams.

Could you do singing in the style of Billie joe Armstrong of Green Day. He doesn’t sound like an amazingly impressive singer but I find it amazingly hard to sing along with him. His voice seems high and low at the same time and somehow it’s easier to sing along with people like layne Staley or josh kizka.

Hello Chris. Thank you so much for your videos. I have a question / suggestion /request............... :)
Since you made few videos on different singers' styles, and since you are The Only Guy On TH-cam who's videos on compression and distortion actually make perfect sense...
May ask you to consider making a video on Graham Bonnet singing style? Young Bonnet, Alcatrazz and Rainbow era? He has such a unique distorted and stressed vocals, which sounds as if he will ruin his voice forever any minute - but he actually doesn't, and I wonder, if this is his unique timbre, or perhaps there is some particular techniques behind his sound...

Is that “super grid” kind of kurt cobain style? When you used vocal fry on the other screaming video, did you combined air compression grid + vocal fry? Or you just used air compression right to the point it will grid, but instead of using this grid, you only use vocal fry technique pushed by compression? Btw, very very good channel information. I’m a heavy metal singer from a Panamanian band called Nightwalkers and I found your videos very helpful to improve my clean vocals. I was using a little air compression to grid my clean voice, but when it comes to shouting parts, I’m currently not able to do it, so I following and recommending your channel to other vocalists from my country. I have Just one doubt ; you make and feel the vocal fry in your real vocal cords or in your false vocal cords??? Or maybe in your epiglotys?? Or maybe in two of them??
What i think is that the false vocal cords fry distortion feels it above the vocal box ; in the soft palate, and the real vocal folds fry feels it in the real vocal cords. Maybe the two ways are right but different.
What can you tell us about it??
    Thanks

Hello! This channel has been amazingly helpful for me. I am a woman and have always wanted to sing with distortion and grit like my favorite vocalists, and I FINALLY CAN!! Thank you so much! I have one question! I was able to get the distortion with no pain, but it sounds awfully nasally when I do it, almost comical. Is there any way to fix this?

I'm so happy you've been helped so much! A lot of it is about finding the right placement with other 'areas' of your singing in the midst of the false cord engagement. We work extensively on tone crafting and shaping in my program Sing Together 365! You can join for free at this link: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/sing-together-365-experience/

@@chrisliepe Thank you for the reply! I will definitely check into that course, not sure if I can join a realtime live course due to being in Japan time zone, though! But I am getting so much out of this channel, I love that you teach vocal techniques used by my favorite artists, most vocal teachers on TH-cam only focus on pop type vocals!

Hey, Chris. This past month has been an adventure thanks to you. If you want I can send clips of progress as I use your techniques and tips.
Also, could you make a video on the difference between "compression/distortion" and "open throat distortion"? KT hit that " subject" but it sounds like a simple belt with distortion added.
Any who, I've watched this vid like 12 times lol. Is it normal to have a slight itchiness in the back of your tongue? Slightly warm. Doesn't really feel uncomfortable, but it feels like some type of mucus. More warm ups, maybe? I warmed up for a good while too.

How do you understamd the difference between holding back air and tensioning your throat?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Tensing your throat happens with the muscles outside your vocal tract. ...And your neck muscles. Holding back air can be done without engaging any external neck or 'throat' muscles.

Could you do something about the technique used by 1000mods - Vidage ? or if you already did it, point me to the video. Thank you so much (:

Chris im a big fan, love your vids maybe you can help someone with a deeper voice understand something.
My voice is about the same tone as Rag n Bone Man's, but i cant ,for the life of me, find a video that explains how to do his kind of growl/raspy voice that he sometimes uses. The song "Human" being a very good example.
My own vocal coach seems to think that i would never be able to do them.
    All the best !

I think i got the idea of this, but when i do it and push from below my stomach and get the sound it tickles my throat and feels like im doing better than what i was before but still not quite as 'harmless' Its not as bad but still makes me cough

you might be using more air than you need. Experiment with holding back more air and see how that affects your sound

Chris, I can absolutely ROAST a D4/Eb4 with no pain at all, but much higher than that, I start to feel a little pain in my throat despite keeping the same technique. I have to start pushing in bad ways in order to get the grit up higher. I am a tenor, so I’m not sure what the deal is. What do you think could be happening?

  • @lyricvideos-musicwithlyric4015

Hey...Chris...you tell us where we SHOULDN'T feel it (below the voice box) but I’m not sure where I should feel it. When I do the poop thing and hold back air, my Adams apple placement goes way up, and I feel a buzz around the Adams apple area. I don't feel a buzz in my chest. Sometimes I get the sensation I want to cough, or I may actually cough.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

You should feel it HIGH above the voice box. Same place as when you hold back air under water :)

Is there a difference between "hurting your voice" and discomfort in your throat? Or is it the same thing? I can't figure out whether or not I'm doing it right 'cause my throat feels discomfort (not pain) afterwards.

I can sing Black Mammoth by Fit for an Autopsy better than I can sing Determined by Mudvayne. How different are the styles in these two songs? I have a hard time trying to fit vocal techniques into specific categories. Is phlegm always going to be an issue whenever I sing this way? No other genres cause these kinds of situations for me.

I think my voice is kidding me. Everytime I stand in front of my mic I don't know how to practise. When I finish my rehearsal and try it only for the sake of feeling the right placement I am doing better. I think a very big part of exploring my voice is when I am not intending to rehearse. I don't really hurt myself when I try to sound gritty but I feels very strained. I have to develop the right feeling then I will be successful.
